Better for a reaction because most movie watchers know of this movie, and you could see it in you that you've defo not seen or heard of the scene. But the scene between Cole and his mother in the car when he comes clean to her; proper punches you in the feels. Defo in my top 10, likely top 5 scenes that made me cry.

Then, you go back and rewatch it and realize the script works completely when seen both ways. Also, I'm from Philadelphia, and I can tell you right now that Toni Collette is the FIRST ACTOR EVER to completely nail the accent, 100%, no errors, no places at all where I sat up and thought, "Wait, that's not right." All the vowels, all the tone contours, everything. That alone blew my mind when I saw it. I've had experiences of having extremely short chats with people 5,000mi from Phila and immediately saying, "Where you from?" and knowing the answer two seconds in because I could tell they were a homegirl/boy from one stinking vowel. Collette was perfection.
That's really awesome to know she nailed the accent, thanks for that! I'm always interested because I'm from Boston, and that's another one of those accents that hardly anyone can do if they're not born and raised there.

I saw this movie when it came out, and you're right it is also good on a rewatch, because then you can catch all the little hints showing that he's really dead. This movie cemented M. Night's reputation for having a twist in his movies and it got to the point where people expected a twist (and were sometimes disappointed when it wasn't good enough). This one was great, though. If you look closely they used the color red to signal dangerous or scary situations for Cole (like the red balloon and red sweater at the party where he gets locked in the closet).
Kind of ashamed to admit that the one that had to be pointed out to me is after the time jump, Malcolm only wears clothes he put on that night he got the award i.e. the sweater or the slacks and dress shirt
To answer your question at 21:00 the girl's mother suffered from a mental illness called Munchausen Syndrome which is that she either lies and says that someone else is sick (usually a child) or purposely causes that other person to be sick so that they get the sympathy and attention from it. In this case the girl's mom was poisoning the girl with floor cleaner like Pine-Sol (Fake brand used in the movie for copyright issues) in her food. If you notice the girl's mother wasn't actually grieving the death of her daughter like the dad was and the fact that she was wearing red (a common color theme used by M. Night throughout this film), she was actually enjoying this moment as if she felt accomplished. All in all, this is like one of the last good M. NIght Shyamalan films before they took a dive. Such a great film and all actors acted really well, I personally really enjoyed Cole's mother's acting in this film, I think she did a really great job in her role, everyone did great.

Watching you get suckered (like we all were) was fun, and watching you realize at the end all the scenes where you _assumed_ Malcolm had been talking or participating didn't happen was great. Tell you a funny story about the first time I saw this movie (WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD): I was in community college when it came out Andy female friend had already seen it and wanted me to watch it, so I went over to her house one afternoon after class. After the time jump in the beginning, I casually said "so what, is he dead the entire movie?" And without missing a beat, my friend turns to me very nonchalantly and says in an incredulous yet natural tone "No, that's stupid". And for whatever reason, I bought it completely. So when the ending finally came around, I looked at her, mouth agape, and pointed with a huge grin on my face. She laughed, proud of herself. I literally guessed the ending, but she wanted me to have a good viewing experience that she lied to my face. I am forever grateful to her for being such a solid friend. 😆

I was spoiled on the plot twist before watching this movie so I was completely robbed of the experience. I did still enjoy the movie even though I knew what was coming.

a few things; the man who shoots himself in the beginning isn't Cole. he's someone who's LIKE Cole. and the bruises, scars and scratches are from the ghosts, they can physically harm him. the ghosts are confused, stuck in limbo almost, and some of them are agitated and they're attracted to Cole because of his sixth sense.
I hope you went into this without knowing THE spoiler. One of the best twists I’ve ever, not only because it’s hard to see coming and when it does it makes sense. Pun intended 😄
The mother with the dead daughter suffered from Munchausen by Proxy. Getting sympathy for herself by keeping a loved one sick. It was overheard at the funeral that the younger daughter was now starting to get sick. That’s why Kira wanted Cole to save her. No one seems to catch on to the fact that the part of Victor, the troubled guy at the beginning, is played by Donnie Wahlberg of New Kids On the Block and Blue Bloods fame.
First time I saw this, I never noticed that he never actually had any direct conversations with his wife or Coles mother. Shaliman rocked the house with this film!
Every time you saw something red in a scene, something important was about to be revealed to you in this movie, right down to the red door knob near the end. Excellent movie!
There's actually a condition I don't know if it was necessarily known at the time this movie came out but it's called munchausen's when a person pretends to be sick to get attention and there's Munchausen by proxy when somebody is caring for a child or an older family member and does something to them to keep them basically bed bound so they can keep getting attention for taking care of them there is actually a girl who ended up being a victim of this her mother was doing something to keep her in a poor condition and convinced her that she was paralyzed or some s*** and the girl ended up killing her mom to free herself of that and I think that's really the first time people knew what it was but I'm pretty sure this all happens on before that did cuz this came out right around the time I graduated high school I don't know if people really knew that was back then and you know I'm a big Golden girls fan and there was this episode where Dorothy was sick and all the doctors told her it's all in your head cuz they couldn't find anything on tests but the thing is that's because it was a fairly new condition that they didn't really have tests to confirm yet what she had was called chronic fatigue syndrome and the other girls were like you know nobody knew what the Black death was when one guy had it thousands had to die before they knew what it was
There was a few law and order episodes that show cased that disorder. I think one episode was actually about the case where the girl killed the mother for making her sick
I'm amazed that you didn't know about this twist. This movie is what popularised the twist at the end in movies. Fight Club and The Others followed suit.

The doctor talking to the Mom about the bruises and scratches on Cole was the director, M. Night Shyamalan making a cameo appearance as he often does in his own films, a bit like Tarantino.
BTW, that Indian guy in the lab coat . . . that's the director. He always gives himself little cameos, a la Alfred Hitchcock (who is a big influence on him).
A really good film. This, Unbreakable and Split are M. Night’s best work IMO. I’m not really a fan of his later work due to the writing and dialogue for characters in those films. But I can’t deny he knows how to make creepy and atmospheric films. And while people may rightfully mock his dependency on twists, ones like here and in Split work really well
Yeah I'm not really an m night shyamalan fan but those movies are good a lot of his other stuff I may or may not have watched it just out of curiosity but I'm never really a fan of his other movies those are very good highly recommend

I mean as far as Bruce Willis movies I I got to say some of the best in my opinion are this Armageddon and unbreakable I I mean I know there's others that are really good but those are the ones that pop into my head
Impressive that you went into this fresh! Gosh it's still one of my favorite movies of all time. I love how you can view this movie as literally as the story is, or about kids who are going through something that everyday people just don't understand. They shouldn't be bullied for that. We should all be understanding for what people are going through that we don't understand.
When you go back to look at this film again , notice the color red and a sudden drop in temperature. That’s when a ghost is present. M. Night Shyamalan, the Director, likes to put himself in each of his films just like Hitchcock did. He was the Doctor who questioned the mother about the marks on Cole.
"Hey come on ill show you where my dad keeps his gun, come on." That scene was always a crazy reference to old anti gun commercials. Yeah the mom killed her daughter with Pine Sol, which really was messed up.
This is one of my all time favorite movies! I saw it in the theater with my now husband and the whole theater gasped at the realization that Malcom was dead the whole time! Another one like that with a twist ending is The Others with Nicole Kidman!

I was 13 when I seen this in theaters, now as a 30 something adult I just found out that the crazy Guy in his underwear at the beginning is actually Donnie Wahlberg from Blue Bloods a new kids on the block… I couldn’t tell cus he lost a scary amount of weight to play that role 😳 I love this movie also born and raised outside philly I usually love M Knight Shyamalan movies
Malcolm also wears the same outfit throughout the movie. Sometimes he has on the coat & sometimes the sweat shirt but he never changes his clothes from the original scene. TONI COLETTE WAS THE MOM IN THIS?😮 Wow. No wonder i have a specific connotation with her. I tend to do that with actors; one specific role will immortalize them in my mind, and it's all i see in every subsequent movie they're in. I don't know why. I did the same thing with Sarah Paulson, i realized i had freeze-framed her from the small role she played at the end of Firefly, when i first watched Bird Box. Lol When i was watching Hereditary, i had a tugging in my mind at Toni's amazing performance. It was like her frustration and anguish was familiar and it seemed to fit, and i couldn't figure out why. It was THIS movie. It created a snapshot of her face, voice, expressions, demeanor, everything, and it stayed with me my whole life. 😍😍
Losing family is hard. My grandpa died before I was born, mom died in 2003 when I was 19, grandma died in 2007, uncle died in 2014 and my dad died 2 months ago.
That was floor cleaner going in the soup. Looked just like a Pine-Sol bottle. There have been cases of people like moms becoming obsessed with taking care of a sick person, being a caregiver. I guess if the girl started getting better the mom couldn't do it anymore so she had to keep her sick. It's called Compulsive Caregiving.
I love this movie more since Bruce Willis announced his aphasia diagnosis. Hard to imagine him now unable to deliver lines because he's losing the ability to understand speech. Bless him to the end of his days.

50 first dates is an Adam Sandler Drew Barrymore movie where they're in Hawaii and she's got some brain damage where she can't retain new information overnight since her accident for over a year she's thought it was her father's birthday and her dad and brother basically play up that it is that day everyday and for that birthday she got him the tape of sixth Sense so every day they watch it and she gets the plot twist for the first time and they are no longer shocked and not even trying to fake it
Director M. Night Shamalyan likes to be in his own movies. He's the doctor in the hospital in this movie who talks to Cole's mom. Some of his movies are good to great, others are wtf.

I think in a lot of ways this is one of the scariest movies ever made. Most horror movies don't leave you with the feeling that it was actually a great movie....this one is definitely one of the best films ever made in my opinion. And that means on some level its a lot more believable than many other movies about the paranormal. Vincent saying he knows why you feel frightened when you're alone.....Cole saying that the hairs standing up on your arm..."that's them". It is genuinely eerie and leaves you wondering if there could be someone who really did experience this!

You must have missed it right after Malcolm got shot when it said on the screen: THE NEXT FALL. Then you would have known it was NOT a flashback.
A lot of people seem to miss this, perhaps because they're still busy processing the shock of the two gunshots in the previous scene.
I hope you went into this without knowing THE spoiler. One of the best twists I’ve ever, not only because it’s hard to see coming and when it does it makes sense. Pun intended 😄

The mother with the dead daughter suffered from Munchausen by Proxy. Getting sympathy for herself by keeping a loved one sick. It was overheard at the funeral that the younger daughter was now starting to get sick. That’s why Kira wanted Cole to save her.
No one seems to catch on to the fact that the part of Victor, the troubled guy at the beginning, is played by Donnie Wahlberg of New Kids On the Block and Blue Bloods fame.
If you look back, you'll realize that no one but Cole and his wife at the end even interact with him.

Every time you saw something red in a scene, something important was about to be revealed to you in this movie, right down to the red door knob near the end. Excellent movie!

The Village is cool movie from M.N.S too. It's not as well critically acclaimed, but I liked it.
After seeing this movie it was my favorite for a while. I love a great twist, and this one was one that I didn't see coming. Such a great film.
There's actually a condition I don't know if it was necessarily known at the time this movie came out but it's called munchausen's when a person pretends to be sick to get attention and there's Munchausen by proxy when somebody is caring for a child or an older family member and does something to them to keep them basically bed bound so they can keep getting attention for taking care of them there is actually a girl who ended up being a victim of this her mother was doing something to keep her in a poor condition and convinced her that she was paralyzed or some s*** and the girl ended up killing her mom to free herself of that and I think that's really the first time people knew what it was but I'm pretty sure this all happens on before that did cuz this came out right around the time I graduated high school I don't know if people really knew that was back then and you know I'm a big Golden girls fan and there was this episode where Dorothy was sick and all the doctors told her it's all in your head cuz they couldn't find anything on tests but the thing is that's because it was a fairly new condition that they didn't really have tests to confirm yet what she had was called chronic fatigue syndrome and the other girls were like you know nobody knew what the Black death was when one guy had it thousands had to die before they knew what it was
There was a few law and order episodes that show cased that disorder. I think one episode was actually about the case where the girl killed the mother for making her sick
I'm amazed that you didn't know about this twist. This movie is what popularised the twist at the end in movies. Fight Club and The Others followed suit.

I remember watching this and Fight Club in the theater around the same time. Two great movies with two great twists.

The doctor talking to the Mom about the bruises and scratches on Cole was the director, M. Night Shyamalan making a cameo appearance as he often does in his own films, a bit like Tarantino.
BTW, that Indian guy in the lab coat . . . that's the director. He always gives himself little cameos, a la Alfred Hitchcock (who is a big influence on him).
A really good film. This, Unbreakable and Split are M. Night’s best work IMO. I’m not really a fan of his later work due to the writing and dialogue for characters in those films. But I can’t deny he knows how to make creepy and atmospheric films. And while people may rightfully mock his dependency on twists, ones like here and in Split work really well
Yeah I'm not really an m night shyamalan fan but those movies are good a lot of his other stuff I may or may not have watched it just out of curiosity but I'm never really a fan of his other movies those are very good highly recommend

Gosh it's still one of my favorite movies of all time.
I love how you can view this movie as literally as the story is, or about kids who are going through something that everyday people just don't understand. They shouldn't be bullied for that. We should all be understanding for what people are going through that we don't understand.
When you go back to look at this film again , notice the color red and a sudden drop in temperature. That’s when a ghost is present.
M. Night Shyamalan, the Director, likes to put himself in each of his films just like Hitchcock did. He was the Doctor who questioned the mother about the marks on Cole.
"Hey come on ill show you where my dad keeps his gun, come on." That scene was always a crazy reference to old anti gun commercials. Yeah the mom killed her daughter with Pine Sol, which really was messed up.
This is one of my all time favorite movies! I saw it in the theater with my now husband and the whole theater gasped at the realization that Malcom was dead the whole time! Another one like that with a twist ending is The Others with Nicole Kidman!
Always kinda bummed i knew the twist before watching this, so its great to live a blind viewing through this king!

I was 13 when I seen this in theaters, now as a 30 something adult I just found out that the crazy Guy in his underwear at the beginning is actually Donnie Wahlberg from Blue Bloods a new kids on the block… I couldn’t tell cus he lost a scary amount of weight to play that role 😳 I love this movie also born and raised outside philly I usually love M Knight Shyamalan movies
Malcolm also wears the same outfit throughout the movie. Sometimes he has on the coat & sometimes the sweat shirt but he never changes his clothes from the original scene. Also the color red was used as an indicator when a ghost (including Willis) was around. Fantastic movie. Great reactions, thanks for sharing.

Wow. No wonder i have a specific connotation with her. I tend to do that with actors; one specific role will immortalize them in my mind, and it's all i see in every subsequent movie they're in. I don't know why. I did the same thing with Sarah Paulson, i realized i had freeze-framed her from the small role she played at the end of Firefly, when i first watched Bird Box. Lol
When i was watching Hereditary, i had a tugging in my mind at Toni's amazing performance. It was like her frustration and anguish was familiar and it seemed to fit, and i couldn't figure out why.
It was THIS movie. It created a snapshot of her face, voice, expressions, demeanor, everything, and it stayed with me my whole life. 😍😍
Losing family is hard. My grandpa died before I was born, mom died in 2003 when I was 19, grandma died in 2007, uncle died in 2014 and my dad died 2 months ago.

That was floor cleaner going in the soup. Looked just like a Pine-Sol bottle. There have been cases of people like moms becoming obsessed with taking care of a sick person, being a caregiver. I guess if the girl started getting better the mom couldn't do it anymore so she had to keep her sick. It's called Compulsive Caregiving.

I love this movie more since Bruce Willis announced his aphasia diagnosis. Hard to imagine him now unable to deliver lines because he's losing the ability to understand speech. Bless him to the end of his days.

50 first dates is an Adam Sandler Drew Barrymore movie where they're in Hawaii and she's got some brain damage where she can't retain new information overnight since her accident for over a year she's thought it was her father's birthday and her dad and brother basically play up that it is that day everyday and for that birthday she got him the tape of sixth Sense so every day they watch it and she gets the plot twist for the first time and they are no longer shocked and not even trying to fake it

Director M. Night Shamalyan likes to be in his own movies. He's the doctor in the hospital in this movie who talks to Cole's mom. Some of his movies are good to great, others are wtf.

The first time I watched this movie back when it came out I assumed off the jump that he was dead because no one ever interacted with him. I assumed it was just a given I never understood why it was a plot twist lmao. I wish I could have had that experience that most people had lol.

Yeah everyone thinks when they see the movie and hear about the twist that the twist is I see dead people no Sweet Summer child that is not the twist The twist is that the guy he told the secret to is one of those people who doesn't know they're dead
I think in a lot of ways this is one of the scariest movies ever made. Most horror movies don't leave you with the feeling that it was actually a great movie....this one is definitely one of the best films ever made in my opinion. And that means on some level its a lot more believable than many other movies about the paranormal. Vincent saying he knows why you feel frightened when you're alone.....Cole saying that the hairs standing up on your arm..."that's them". It is genuinely eerie and leaves you wondering if there could be someone who really did experience this!
