This movie is the perfect satire of horror movies, it tries to explain all the nonsense and illogical choices characters do in other horror movies. That's why it's so brilliant, after looking a this you can watch at other movies and think, perhaps they just split up cause they got chemicals in them by the producers or something. The more "Cabin in the woods" tries to explain other horror movies, the more voluntarily ridiculous it becomes. It's making fun at the nonsense in OTHER horror movies. The movie in itself doesn't make a lot of sense but that's kinda the point.

Don't forget the film was shot lonnnng before its release (before Star Trek, Chris' official blockbuster debut), Chris was just a young Australian upcoming star having done only teensoap in his country. MGM wanted to have him as one of its young stars, so they hired him for CitW and their Red Dawn remake... When MGM went bankrupt both films' release were put on hold. Chris shot Star Trek AFTER, BUT it was released WAY BEFORE. Both films were eventually bought by Lions Gate, but, to avoid alienating Chinese audiences, they had to spend LOTS of money to change the invaders in Red Dawn, from Chinese to Koreans.
In the end, RD bombed and CitW did little money (they didn't know how to sell it) despite being release once Chris had become a bonafide star.

It was actually filming his heroic speech that got him the role of Thor. Whedon must have already been in talks with Disney about the Avengers because he and Goddard say in the commentary that when looking at the dailies for his speech they were like "get Marvel on the phone, we found him" (even tho b/c post production hell Thor came out first I think). Hemsworth was called over for like an audience on a Thursday or something and when he returned to shoot on Friday they were like "so are you gonna still talk to us after your famous?"

You should watch Kill Count to see how much work went into this movie (and just to watch it in general because it's awesome). Every monster had to be carefully CGI-ed, being aware of scale and location in relation to the other monsters. Some shots took days to make, only to appear on a monitor in the background. A script line that said only "Chaos on every screen" meant that they had to make entire sets and shoot scenes just for tiny monitors. I think the director said it was his first time directing and he didn't know any better so he tried to do everything he'd always wanted just in case he never directed again.

The being dragged off screaming, the hands smashing through windows, the set up and being filmed, hiding in the basement, appeasing some kind of ancient curse/God, the almost outdoors ca-noodling? Urgh, makes me want to replay it.

Haha no, they do NOT stream it online. If ANYBODY got wind of what was happening, the rituals around the world wouldn't work. When they said "we aren't the only ones watching" and "gotta keep the customers entertained", they were referring to the old ones, the sleeping ancients. The whole purpose of the rituals, of the sacrifices, was to appease the _ancients,_ by giving them what they wanted. The entire, expensive, elaborate setup was all for their benefit, to keep the gods sleeping.

Using a more familiar franchise to describe it. Its like A film crew shows up at crystal lake on Friday the 6th. And hangs out with Jason Voorhees. To document final preparations for his big night.
It really shows how much prep work is involved with being a successful slasher.

This whole movie is a metaphor. We are the ancient gods who need to be pleased by blood sacrifice of these people that we watch. The people behind the computer are the directors and the script writers. Then the people that were watching is the main characters are the actors who have to go through the pain that we want to see. The blood that we desire to have

After this movie I recommend watching the movie. Behind the Mask the Rise of Leslie Vernon. It is a nother movie that truly pays homage to horror movies. With small horror movie references though out the entire movie. Like names, props an movie scene references. From horror movies like Psycho,The Toolbox muders, Pet Cemetery, Hellraiser, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th,The Shining and Poltergeis. It's done mostly in a mockumentary Style so humer ,scares stuff like that. Think Scream but Behind the Mask the Rise of Leslie Vernon. Is from the killers point of view it even has some horror icons in it. I will say this one because the movie doesn't hide it but Robert Englund. Is in it because he loved the script an the direction the movie went in. But other Horror icons appear in the movie.

This movie has much Evil Dead and Scream influence.. The movie is very Meta. The monsters in the climax are a reference to Aliens, Strangers, Pennywise the.Clown Black Lagoon creature, the Unicorn reminds me of the movie Legend, Giant Snake is a reference to me movie Anaconda, the Chainsaw head is a reference to Hellraiser Pinhead, the Zombies they conjured is a Evil Dead reference, the Japanese spirit trying to kill the kids is a reference to the Japanese Ring movies or Ringu films and the Japanese Ju-on movies or Grudge movies. The Ancients are a reference to the audience that loves Horror movies.

"WE" ARE THE "GODS" IN THIS!!!
THE "SACRIFICES" ARE TO US MOVIES THAT KEEP US HAPPY AND CONTENT!! THE 98 MISHAP WAS A REFERENCE TO THE MOVIE "THE FACULTY" THAT CAME OUT IN 98 AND WAS UNIVERSALLY PANNED DUE TO IT "NOT FULFILLING THE SACRIFICES PROPERLY"!!

    An underrated masterpiece...
    PERIOD !
It was co-written an produced by Josh Whedon, explaining why there are so many actors from his shows. Jesse Williams, playing Holden was a main character in Grey's Anatomy.
AND, although the movie was released in 2011, he was actually shot à few years before, but its release was postponed because of its production Studio (MGM) bankruptcy... it was later bought by Lions Gate.

well the main influence that Cabin in the woods had is Evil dead so maybe start with that. Hereditary and Midsommar are good newer horror movies. If you haven't seen Parasite either I would HIGHLY recommend it although its not really a horror movie like the others

Yea this movie is crazy. And I love it for that. There is a similar satire movie on horror/slasher movies that is not that well known. It's called "Behind the mask - The Rise of Leslie Vernon". But you might enjoy that a lot more if you have watched the classic Halloween / Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street movies.
Also - if you want to get into horror films, I always recommend movies like Jacobs Ladder, Silent Hill or the first Saw movie which are a little bit different to the classic haunted house stuff and more interesting in my opinion. Keep it up, Primate! : )
