I was a Portland resident during this time (moved from LA to Portland in 1990) but had become a diehard jazz fan during the Stockton to Malone era. My dad got courtside tickets to blazers games during this time and I got to go to several games and knew these guys well. It’s funny how badly I hated my own hometown team. The blazers stood in the way of the jazz in their final dynasty years. I eventually came to love the blazers and this team. Definitely one of the more underrated in history. Great video!!!

If the NBA was my girlfriend, the 2000 season was the honeymoon. I absolutely fell in love with the league at the time.. Looking back I would (as a Danish fan) have rooted more for the Blazers. I didn't at the time because I had bad taste I liked the Lakers. Could I time travel I would have rooted for that Blazers team. Boy what a collection of talents and personalities! As pointed out in this great video, the roster changes from 99 to the 2000 season made them a team of men instead of boys, maybe with the exception of Sheed, but his talents still were worth the challenges. The clashes they had with the West rivals Lakers, Utah, San Antonio, Seattle, Phoenix and Minnesota were amazing to watch.

As a Lakerfan in 2K, my hottake on Porty is that they had massive immaturity issues with Sheed, had no defined superstar, and law of diminishing returns. There IS a prob with too many dudes who are all about as good as the next one. You’ll have ill defined roles and no continuity visavis the top players on a nightly basis. Plus, they temded to choke. When LAL won the 2/29/00 gm at Port w/ both teams at 45-11, Port immediately slid after the L. That was a microcosm of the 4th in G7. That said, they still almost did beat the Lakers, who weren’t poised themselves in Y1 of the 3peat. Jax and Shaw and Harp (vets) did things to swing momentum away from Port in G7. Lakes in 3pt yrs did make huge hay with early series Ws tho. Gm 1s in particular. Those are worth the same as Gms 5,6. That early focus saved their asses as well by the end of the 7th gm. Took easy G1 Ws vs Port and Sac. That’s all Phil imo. Mandating players visualize winning G1 and burning sage and shit.

Blazers swept LA in the '77 WCF. The 91, and 00 WCF went 6 and 7 games. Each team went on to win the finals once. That's all that matters, first round mismatches in favor of either team, and 01 and 02 first round Laker sweeps don't mean much. Everyone got swept by LA in 01 and 02. Pippen could have really used a 2000 NBA title. He could have said Jordan is GOAT and was lead man on 6 championship teams [in Chicago], but, Jordan couldn't win without Pippen, and Pippen won 1 without Jordan.
But... The 2000 Blazers r why Pippen was Pippen and not Jordan.
Pippen in 94 was ahead in 6 of 7 games in semifinals [vs N.Y.] and lost series 3-4.
In 95, Pippen was begging out of Chicago (didn't leave till 99 which is sorta bitch made) [and Chicago] was 34-31 and most likely on their way out of the elite class of the East and probably getting bounced out the first round before MJ returned. MJ saved the 95 Chicago Bulls and glued Scottie back to Chicago for another 3peat from 96-98. The 95 Bulls don't sweep the 95 Hornets and take the 95 Magic 6 games without MJ. They aren't even the 5 seed without MJ in 95. The Pippen era was flat lining after 1 season without MJ. The Pippen era in Houston and Portland eventually always inevitably flatlined as well.
