How the Trail Blazers imploded into the Jail Blazers

- Who's ready for a wild (albeit ultimately sad) ride?
The very deep Portland Trail Blazers came extremely close to beating the Kobe-Shaq Lakers in game 7 of the 2000 Western Conference Finals. They were up 15 in the fourth! Buttttt LA went on a 15-0 run and won. Still, the Blazers were poised for a bright future, expected to be a serious western threat, to keep putting up a fight with the Lakers.
Their near finals berth could have been the first stone in the path to a dominant future.
But of course the loss and failure to make it to the finals could be the first stone in a totally different path-- one paved with drug arrests, intra-team violence, and a middling record that belied the promise the team once held.
This ride has a steep drop, not for the faint of heart.

The audacity to pull out your rookie card instead of your ID is a power move. Very dumb, and not recommended, but a power move.
I hear Charizard did that one time, too.
If he didn't fight it when the cop asked again for a state ID or DL, I'd say it was funny. Honestly don't know if he did or not but the initial act is funny.
Yeah, I tried that, and it didn't work for me; turns out the cop had no interest in my baby photo.
You’d think that after all those other guys got popped for possession he might have figured out that Portland PD doesn’t like them enough for them to work (can’t imagine why, Portland PD has always had a *stellar* reputation and would *never* overpolice the black citizens of Portland)
Was that a power move or a bribe?
"The 'One Team' part might actually be a problem... a team so deep their bench was filled with all-stars and career starters. Impressive on paper, but hard to see how everyone was going to harmoniously share playing time."

All those egos but only 1 ball.
TBF, Melo hasnt been a problem so far. Westbrook is going to have to get use to playing more off ball if he wants any shot at a title.
That can be said about a lot of teams over the years, When you're packed full of all-stars and elites, the atmosphere can be volatile beyond belief
Pretty sure injuries will make sure that won't be a problem.

2001 was still best-of-five for the first round, so the Blazers were swept in three straight, not four. Best-of-seven first round didn't come into play until 2003.

Randolph would later say the reason he sucker punched Patterson in the eye was cause he didn’t like how Patterson was bullying other players on the team.

Z-bo also has a long history of being a bully himself. He literally strong armed a medical weed delivery man over a zip back in the day here in Portland! Dawg u a millionaire, pay for ya damn weed!
You Do wonder was Randolph punching Ruben Patterson because he was upset 😡...This is how you bully someone or was he trying to stop him from bullying the young players. 😅

Great team, years later it comes out the refs cheated. I was rolling with the Blazers that year & you could see the obvious in that Game 6. Management should have held fast that year coming off the 7 game series & probably would have beat the Lakers the next year. At most they needed a extra big & the GM straight went to overkill with the roster. Chemistry is everything, they would have had the chip before any of the bs started .
Ruben Patterson, it turned out, was worse than a bully. He has an attempted rape conviction on his record. If anyone was a symbol of the Jail Blazers...it was Patterson.
I love how Z-bo had a complete turnaround after he left Portland and became an actual positive locker room presence in Memphis. True Irony.
His experiences are the key to his eventual maturity. That's why he was respected by everybody during his tenure in Memphis.
As funny as that is with Z-Bo, remember that Jermaine O'Neil became an all NBA guy after Portland and Rasheed was the misunderstood, final piece of a championship team the moment he stepped in Detroit.

In '03 I wrote a letter to Paul Allen that I was sad there weren't any players on the team I could look up to. He responded with a hand written letter saying they were working on it and included 2 tickets behind the bench to a Lakers game to say he was sorry. Really cool moment for a little kid.

This came to a head when a woman publicly complained to the media after getting tossed for carrying a "trade Whitsitt" sign. Next few home games, there were waves of "Trade Whitsitt" signs.
Also, speaking of Whitsitt During this period, media had questioned him about possible chemistry issues with the team. His response? "I never studied chemistry in college".
I would like to see a collapse video on the Denver Broncos. How they went from having one of the best free agent signings in football and winning super bowl 50 to having no quarterback, no owner and having no primetime games.
Say what you want about Pippin’s antics throughout his career, him sitting on the floor pouting is the most dignified thing he’s done. Honestly he lives reasonably close to me and so I see him in town from time to time and maybe age has mellowed him but he’s the nicest guy. You guys should start a new series about franchise comebacks, similar to the “Collapse” series. You could do the Nationals, starting with the team coming back to DC and the game 5 NLDS loss to the Cardinals. The collapse could go down through the playoff first round exits until you reach 19-31 in 2019. Then the timeline skyrockets from June 2019 - October 2019 when they won the World Series in unbelievable fashion.

Still can't believe they lost that game 7 to the Lakers. As a kid, I felt like the game was fixed.
every game the lakers have ever won is fixed according to non laker fans lmaooo you guys need a new narrative. maybe something that's actually plausible
I mean, the Blazers missing a million shots in the 4th Quarter probably had more to do with the loss but to each their own.
It was.
"Everyone lived!" I mean cant ask for much more, right? 😂
