And if Grant Hill could’ve stayed healthy too! The entire Magic era in this collapse was filled with a boatload of “What if’s?” What if Penny stayed healthy? What if Hill stayed healthy? What if they allowed Duncan to have family on team flights? What if they never traded Ben Wallace to get Hill? What if they never traded Mike Miller for Drew Gooden? What if they took Stoudamire in the 2002 draft instead of trading the pick? And of course…a lot of “What if’s?” in that 2001 draft John Gabriel, tremendous job he did constructing a competitive 1999-00 team. But this man was just terrible at drafting during his time there
Doc Rivers taking that no-name squad to 41-41 is insane. For him to do that so early in his NBA coaching career is the icing on the cake. I never would have imagined a COACH could carry a team that much. (Bonus factoid: Since 2007-08, Doc Rivers has coached three teams and has missed the playoffs ONE time.)
Bo Outlaw on that 41-41 2000 team led the league in DBPM and finished 20th in the league in VORP. Defensive stats can be noisy and weird, but the guy was an all-defense level guy for sure; shame he never got any accolades.
Still didn't deserve COTY over Phil Jackson in my book, especially since they missed the playoffs. How much the media's dislike of Jackson spurred them to to vote for Doc we'll never know but I believe is a big reason why he won it.

This team was so damn exciting and they got the draft right with Shaq and Penny. But Game 1 against Houston, it felt like the end started right there and Penny's injuries triggered an avalanche from melted snow created by Shaq being low-balled in free agency.
Not only that both shaq and 3d will readily admit they came into the series with the wrong attitude partying all night before game one while rockets were resting up and watching game tapes. They lost that series on experience that's why vets matter on a team as well as playoff experience theu could have won thay series. Also if you're curious the place I got them admitting having the wrong attitude was on an episode of open court.
I can't say that I remember anything from the mid-90's Magic, but I do remember how much fun it was to watch that 2009 team, and I remember there being a crazy atmosphere in their home arena during that playoff run. It's a shame they haven't been able to maintain success, because those fans DO show up in large quantities when the team is good.

The "What if" Orlando Magic dynasty that never happend is one of the most interesting theories in NBA history IMO. The Magic could have made that happend and it was not at all to far off the mark. BUT as we all know already the loss of Shaquille O'neal, injuries to Penny Hardaway and Anderson's dropp and more just shot the franchise in the foot(s). The Magic was SO CLOSE to take over the crown after the Chicago Bulls dynasty had ended due to aging, but if a team can't hold up togheter, stay focus & dedicated like MJ's Bulls did in the late 80's to develop and evolve, then you regardless of potential tallent will never reach that top. The Magic really looked like the next Bulls dynasty for a couple of years. IMO, if I could have decided in any way, I would have traded the Lakers dynasty for a Magic dynasty!
Its sad what happened to the Magic after Shaq left and to the franchise as a whole. Would love to see a collapse video of the 1996 Sonics and the 2008 Celtics.
God damn why does channel always go for my throat? The shoe throw from the gators, “the catch” with the cubs, and don’t forget their video about the Dwight Howard Magic

Damn secret place y'all really Savage I just realized and I probably should have realized it because I've been a resident in Orlando for almost a decade, but you guys have two episodes dedicated on the Orlando magic collapsing alone. As lucky as the franchise can be it's also one of the most unlucky. History definitely repeated itself
So well done....The 30 for 30 on the 90s Orlando Magic discusses a lot of this, but seeing it take shape here is also awesome...So wild that the Magic initially screwed up royally, low balling Shaq, which was just so foolish...had they had any brains, they would've just offered him a max salary from the jump, and maybe this ends differently. The Penny and Grant Hill injuries are just so sad. People really forget how great BOTH were, especially Penny. It really is a bummer when health deters you, but, that's part of the game.
I never realised how many great players were at Orlando. I forgot Hill was there or a young Ben Wallace. Such talent walked in and out! I really feel for T Mac though. I feel like he was at his best in the league with Kobe for a few years and was doing most of it. Shame Hill was out.
The return of Collapse! I missed it so much I actually found a channel who basically ripped off your format 😂 fun to see some other stories be told but obviously their videos don’t hold a candle to the OG
Well this one covers the 1990s Orlando Magic of Shaq and Penny with the other Collapse video about the Magic centered around Dwight Howard. This Magic could've been the future of the league until Shaq left and Penny's career got cutshort by injuries but they were still a great but also one of the biggest what-ifs in NBA history.
Man so crazy that horry is seen like that from other fan bases. I’m a laker fan so I’ve never seen him in anything but a positive light. I will never forget watching that shot at the buzzard.
It would have been interesting to see whether the Magic would have won a championship had they managed to resign Shaq for another 3-4 years. They were fools for short changing Shaq on their offer. It was obvious that he was a MVP level, future HOF player.
I always thought that the Magic had the all-time worst medical staff in the NBA. The amount of players who got injured while plating for them is mind-blowing (Penny, Shaq, Seikaly, Hill, McGrady). On the other hand, the Phoenix Suns always managed to extend players' careers with top-notch physicians.
Still blows my mind the Magic fumbled Tim Duncan because of Doc not letting wives on the team plane. Who knows if Hill stays healthy in that timeline, but a prime Duncan and T-Mac combo would've been incredible.
If you want to do an interesting collapses and I'm from Houston, the 2019 Houston Texans and 2018 Houston Rockets would be great choice. I would also like and dread the 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks collapse, because I am a fan of that team and they won the World Series when I was born.
Sports teams didn't know about how to treat injuries back then. Basically, their logic was to try to get guys to fight through potentially serious injuries, and the Magic did this with Hardaway. Not only that, but being stupid enough not to go all in with Shaq, sealed their fate.
To be fair... We know that Shaq would have stayed in Orlando if was given the right money now they was a pole numbers showing that 85% Orlando fans said that Shaquille O'Neal wasn't worth over a hundred million... Lingered and probably worsened through an Olympic summer but we must remember at that particular time in the NBA no player was getting even close to 100 million dollars... Now the Orlando magic like this gentleman said did offer him shorter terms for 4 years 80 million which means $20 per year and Shaquille even said that he thought about signing it but when he was thinking it over he was at home watching SportsCenter and then all of a sudden Miami heat who debut the same time the Orlando magic did. They gave an extension to Alonzo morning over 100 million and he became the first player to make that kind of money and when Shaquille O'Neal saw this he actually went back and told Orlando magic that he wants to get paid $150 million.... No let's say that Orlando magic did offer him the max deal which was at the time 120 million... Florida doesn't have a sales tax so he would have made so much money because here in California we have to pay sales tax.. and if Shaq got that money in Orlando magic do you honestly think that Orlando magic had enough money for Penny hardaway who was one of the best NBA players at that time?? Penny hardaway was such a talented basketball player and very unique skills that he would want a big contract like Shakti but Orlando magic couldn't afford him if Shaq would have stayed..... That Shaquille O'Neal is one of the greatest centers of all time and he left his mark but do you think that Shaquille O'Neall without Kobe Bryant or Dwayne Wayne or Penny hardaway can bring a championship?? I honestly don't think he can put the team on his soldiers and win a championship... I think the closest player in any behave history that carried a team was Allen Iverson who carried the Philadelphia 76ers all the way to the NBA finals...
My interest in the NBA really took off in the 93-94 season, with Penny and Webber rookie cards being sought out commodities. So I'm biased. But still, this is one of the most interesting stories of "so close" and "what if" after all these years. As much as I adore Hakeem as my all time fav 5/C, I would've loved seeing him win just one, and this team take one. I think that could've given this young team the confidence, structure and momentum and further vetern pieces wanting a ring, to seriously have threatened and taken at least one of MJ's later 3 trophies. Oh well, at least we got gotto enjoy Kobe(RIP)/Shaq time.
How a franchise had Shaq, Penny, T-Mac, Hill, Ben Wallace, Chauncey Billups, and Dwight Howard over a 15 year span, resulting in just 2 final appearances is disappointing
We need a 08 celtics vid, I think it would be an interesting watch. The ray decision and how the team reacted, how the celtics also tried to trade him. Also the trade with the nets in the end. I think it could be good!
The Magic lowballing a young 25 year old Shaq is one of the dumbest moves in NBA History. Only Michael Jordan was more dominant as a player at that time in 1996. Him staying with the Magic is one the greatest what if's in modern history. i think there's a real chance they give the Bulls a run for their money in 97 and for sure beat them in the 98 Last Dance season. Orlando probably could have won 4-6 titles before it was said and done.
Another very interesting and excellent video by Secret Base! You know, I've always wondered what would've happened if Shaquille O'Neal stayed with the Magic instead of signing with the Lakers. If Shaq stayed in Orlando, AND if his supporting cast stayed healthy -- including Penny Hardaway -- the Magic could've snagged plenty of NBA championships. No doubt about it.

And of course…a lot of “What if’s?” in that 2001 draft
John Gabriel, tremendous job he did constructing a competitive 1999-00 team.
But this man was just terrible at drafting during his time there

@@JWex-jy7sk Grant Hill Was Looking To Add An Three Point Shot To His Impressive Arsenal Of Moves Imagine Grant Hill With A Three Point Shot Buckets!
@@CrazyxEnigma I mean, just to compare, Phil Jackson had a prime Shaq, a rising Kobe and a cast of star-quality role players. Rivers had...basically nobody. I don't think bias is the reason Rivers was seen as the more impressive coach in that season.

Collapse is one of the best series you guys have. I hope you have more of theses videos coming soon.
Thanks Seth and Secret Base team for another masterpiece
I love how this blends perfectly with the collapse episode on the Dwight Howard Magic team
Absolutely watch this one then the Dwight one. One-stop Magic history... As a magic fan i hope we can turn it around
That Game 1 of the 95 Finals has to be the greatest Game 1 of any sport in a seven game series. I was just a kid but I still remember watching Nick Anderson with those missed free throws, I thought he was going to cry. I felt so sorry for him.
I also was a kid in Houston praying for him to missed those shots. Then Clyde drive through the lane and misses and Hakeem puts it back in. Then Kenny with the 3 ball...The Rockets were the first team to use the 3 point line as a weapon. Anyway one of the most iconic game in the Finals.
this was my childhood, the story of a Magic fan growing up in the 90s. man I was so excited when we got grant hill. it was super disappointing to watch the injury thing happen again like it did to Penny
I have missed this series, thank you for bringing it back.

I have been asking for this specific collapse since y’all introduced the series concept, I love you guys’ content.

That Dennis Scott incident was something I never forgot, it was so out there. I remember it being an actual mental breakdown and the Orlando management expressing genuine concern for D3's mental well-being. I never heard this was incorrect and D3 took some time to get better.

YES, this series is back! Pretty gnarly for a franchise with two Finals appearances to have two Collapse videos after those championship runs.
also to have to have 2 overall number 1 pics at the center position, very very coincidental.
Also in the 2010s, they got Vucevic in the trade. Not as talented as those two before him but it seems the Magic's rebuild is centered around centers. (Lol no pun)
Love this video! Would love to collapse videos on the 90s Sixers, post big three Celtics, Cavs post 85 Chicago Bears, post Walsh/Seifert 49ers, post Elway Broncos to name a few but LOVED this Episode, Fellas!
and then Phoenix Suns extended Penny & GHill's career. two of my favorite players that was the biggest "what if" in my book.

excellent video. I loved those mid 90s magic teams. peak Penny was so fun.
Yeah,Shaq took that-PERSONALLY.Which he should have,being a franchise player.
Nick Anderson's 4 missed free throws changed the momentum of the game
Seth has to narrate every secret base video. Others dont have the charisma like he does
Damn, the Magic must be really bad when they get not one, but TWO Collapse videos.
I'm still hoping the next Collapse video is about how the Redskins fell from grace because of Dan Snyder's incompetence. The guy is basically the James Dolan of the NFL.

I miss the days when we could see you guys faces when you were doing these vids. Still love them though and will continue to do so!
Its sad what happened to the Magic after Shaq left and to the franchise as a whole. Would love to see a collapse video of the 1996 Sonics and the 2008 Celtics.

@@vittiriowashington5211 destiny is wild
Love this. Done exceptionally well! Great job.
My favorite version of Shaq a big that was quick and definitely made an impact immediately

This was my favorite team growing up. Shaq left. Jordan retired. I was pissed at basketball
The magic has been my favorite team since 1990 you did a great job thank you
Well this one covers the 1990s Orlando Magic of Shaq and Penny with the other Collapse video about the Magic centered around Dwight Howard.
I was a hardcore Charlotte Hornets fan but that Magic team i loved. Really because of Penny more then anything. What a shame he got injured.
The Shaq and Penny duo was so great. It sucks Penny got injured
Sports teams didn't know about how to treat injuries back then. Basically, their logic was to try to get guys to fight through potentially serious injuries, and the Magic did this with Hardaway. Not only that, but being stupid enough not to go all in with Shaq, sealed their fate.
Shawn Kemp looked absolutely miserable in that pic of him holding up the Magic jersey! 😂😂☠️
I blame Nick Anderson for the 1st run.. that's where the fall all began!
I love these collapse videos. I see a Washington nationals one coming soon to this channel. Or even a Chicago Cubs one as well
You ain't lying also you noticed this is Orlando's second time LOL.
how bad does your franchise have to be to have TWO separate collapse videos 😭😭😭
also: might need a penny prism after this 👀👀👀
To be fair...
Low balling prime Shaq when he’s set to become a free agent is one of the dumbest moves in history.
And speaking of Tim Duncan and the Spurs, I think it's about time to do a Collapse episode on the 2013-14 Spurs.
These are some of your most entertaining videos. Good work as always
Doc rivers fumbling the signing of Duncan in 2000 to form a big 3 with TMac and Grant hill, is one of the biggest ifs in that franchise.
I’m a simple man I see a collapse video and I click right away
Another very interesting and excellent video by Secret Base! You know, I've always wondered what would've happened if Shaquille O'Neal stayed with the Magic instead of signing with the Lakers. If Shaq stayed in Orlando, AND if his supporting cast stayed healthy -- including Penny Hardaway -- the Magic could've snagged plenty of NBA championships. No doubt about it.
