How the Mavericks fell from world champions to the team nobody wanted to join

  • In 2011 the Dallas Mavericks were on top of the world. A team in the truest sense of the word, veteran role players bolstered the stars. Dallas beat the Miami Heat, and their fancy big three, to bring home glory. But that championship team didn’t last. Nor did the glory.
There were just too many shiny free agents on the horizon, and the horizon after that, capturing Mark Cuban’s eye. So while he made cap room and pitched free agents, he said goodbye to trusted entities like Tyson Chandler, Jason Terry and Jason Kidd. Which, who could have guessed, hurt the team. Especially because those shiny free agents were like, “Join the Mavs? ...nah I’m good.”
While Dirk Nowitzki remained the star in Dallas, the Mavericks tumbled from the top of the world.
And now, you can relive all the twists, turns, bumps and bruises of that very long fall!

New York has the second biggest market in the NBA. Everyone wants to play for the Knicks because when u sign with the Knicks its not about winning titles. Its about cash. Athletes get ridiculous deals and more exposure than anywhere else. More nationally televised games than any other franchise except the Lakers . This means sponsorship deals, commercials etc etc.
This is where athletes make the real money.
So why would someone like Anthony trade the spotlight of NY and go to the team that cant even sell their regular season tickets?
There are several teams in the NBA where nobody can say "No" to them. Its LAL, Houston, Miami, Boston and as of recent - the Clippers who are riding high since the new ownership.
When you sign with some of these teams you will be making more money even if you dont reach the playoffs.
So of course the Knicks HAVE more potential.

Can't believe you left out my man Peja Stojakovic. He stepped up with clutch 3's in the 1st Round against Portland and in the West Semis against LA. @@richboyjullianhicks6604 keyword in my comment was "dynastic" nobody said they were trash. But to insinuate they had this big collapse like the Knicks and Bulls after the 90's or other teams that were seen at the time as a team that would stand the test of time and fade away smoothly is just wrong. Winning 50+ games consecutively is nothing to sneeze at but it wasn't like their run was littered with 4 or 5 60+ win seasons. Only twice did they go to the WCF or further in 10 years not exactly a powerhouse. The Mavs were always a good team to say was a dark horse at most. It always seemed like when you painted playoffs on the floor they would seem to fold. And not going down swinging in 7 games either. The magical part is the fact they swept the defending Champs in the Lakers in the second round when ppl thought Kobe could get a chance at a 2nd 3-peat w/o Shaq. It's magical when u beat the Heat who were freshly formed with the entire NBA writing the Mavs off as the guest of honor to the Heat's coronation as the new dynasty. That's why it's magical. Nobody had the Mavs winning the title, not even going into the playoffs. The Thunder were favorites in that WCF. Lol "inevitable" is the furthest word I would use when describing that Mavs team chances of winning the Finals that year. U tryna compare it to the 2011 Cavs winning the title is saying literally the impossible happened not something magical.

Jonas V will be a stud with the Grillizes but you needed to get Gasol to seal the deal. He is your version of Tyson Chandler. That trade will go great for both Toronto and Memphis!!! The only thing I would have changed about Toronto’s title run was to have DeRozan there instead of Khawhi. I would loved to see coach Casey stay and win but Nick Nurse is pushing all of the right buttons and is building a legacy in his very short head coaching career!!!
I was fine with letting Tyson Chandler go in 2011. I do believe if Dallas would have gotten Deron Williams in 2012 (we got him in 2016), Dallas had a much better chance at getting Dwight Howard in 2013. I loved having Tyson Chandler back and (unlike 2011), I was pissed we didn’t try to sign him back in 2015, I had no desire to go after DeAndre Jordan in 2015. That 2011 Mavs team is slept on because they beat some damn good teams in order to win the NBA title. They beat the Blazers in 6, swept the Lakers, beat the Thunder in 5, and then they beat the Heatles in 6. That was an impressive run by a veteran team with an underrated coach in Carlisle imo.

This team was in the verge of becoming the NY Knicks. A team that nobody wanted to go. With a bunch of scraps and the salary cap at full.
But, like a miracle, the drafted the best European prospect ever. And now they are in the title run again.

One thing this video didn't mention is Dallas under Cuban ALWAYS had this mindset of chasing the flashy big name free agent even before they won a title. During the Shaq/Kobe split Cuban lowballed Steve Nash leading to him signing with the Suns in the hopes of being able to land Shaq.
It's always been how they ran, and it really has yet to work out for them.

2011 Mavs were once in a blue moon championship team. Everyone knew that it would be really difficult to replicate that success, not even close. They would have been a solid playoff team for a few years and *then* reorganised everything, but they chose not to be that meddling playoff team and instead skip to the reorganisation immediately.
