Kate actually wrote the song, and then Prince added his bits to it. It took two years on and off to get the right balance . A really cool collaboration
The lyrics are all Kate's. Prince: keyboards, guitar, bass guitar, vocals and co-arranger. "Del Palmer, Kate’s former partner and longtime engineer and bass player, spoke about the track to Future Music in 1993: “This one actually was recorded in collaboration with Prince - Kate went to see him at a gig and was flattered to be asked to meet him after the show, when they discussed a collaboration. Unable to physically get together in the same room, they swapped multi-track tapes, with a slave reel returning from Prince’s Paisley Park studio covered in vocals, guitar solos and keyboards. The problem then was to put the track back together into something resembling its original form while retaining the best of what Prince had done. He hadn’t added one of the vocal parts which would have been particularly good for him, so it basically took two years to put it back together. What’s left is his lead guitar, some digital synths and some chorus vocals. Then Lenny Henry came in to do a vocal on the end - he’s really got a great voice and ought to be doing a serious record of his own.“

Another Brit Female artist that is Brill but doesnt get much play is "Judie Tzuke" !! tracks such as "For You" and
"Stay with me till dawn " !are just brilliant ! cheers ,great diversity of music being played !

My goodness, I'd forgotten all about Judie Tzuke! "Stay with me 'till dawn" came out when I was still grieving the loss of my first love, and this song was like a punch in the guts then. I'm glad to say I'm well over that now (I'm 61) but what a memory!

One of the voices is Lenny Henry because Prince didnt want to sing the lines that Kate Bysh wanted him to sing
When she sings, "Of all the people in the world, why should I love you?", She's singing about Jesus. She's not questioning her love for Him, she's celebrating Him in worship. The finer purple and purest gold are the Father, the red of the Sacred Heart is Jesus, and the grey of the ghost is obviously the Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit, whichever you're used to.

Something that most people don't realise about this rendition is that the later verse wasn't sung by Prince, but by UK comedian Lenny Henry. Lenny is very popular in the UK but is mostly known for his comedy roles, so I was very surprised to discover that he has a very soulful voice. I've heard several versions of this amazing song, and although this one is by far my favourite, I do love the others, too. I really appreciate you guys reacting to this one.
Kate's original demo sent to Prince captures the essence of her message so much better than the somewhat-overproduced final Prince-collab version:

You better listen to the demo version without Prince. It's much more better.
It’s a great song but I think the Jury is out on Prince’s contribution. He can’t even get the lyrics to the chorus right!
I've never liked this piece which bears too much of Prince's imprint and which I don't find very inspired either! Not that I don't like Prince (far from it) but at that time he and Kate were no longer at the top of their inspiration in my humble opinion.
This period was a difficult time in Kate’s life, however years later she was able ti deliver fantastic music again.
@@bunjijumper5345 Yes I know it was a difficult time for her but I could never get used to the work of Kate Bush past The Sensual World. From The Red Shoes and the following albums it no longer suits me at all. I only like Kate Bush's first six studio albums.
@@a.k.1740 I don’t think she peaked at Hounds. Red Shoes was not up to her standards but I think you are depriving yourself by not getting into her recent work too. I think that many early fans feel her new stuff isn’t crazy weird so it’s not good, it’s weird in less obvious ways
@@bunjijumper5345 I speak knowingly because I have listened to all his other more recent works but none of them speak to me. I don't like her ultra-minimalist music or her whispered voice that she's been using for several years. I definitely stick to The Sensual World and anyway my two favorite albums from Kate Bush are Never for Ever and The Dreaming.
@@a.k.1740 the Sensual World is my favorite work of hers, well she certainly made a huge impact on you when albums she made decades ago still speak to you and so many others.

I don't think that Prince agreed to "show up" for collaborating with Kate -- I think Kate agreed to "show up" and collaborate with Prince.
Seems likely, considering it's Prince.
@kevinlawrence2229 Neither of them "Showed up" to collaborate. They exchanged tapes which resulted in this track. Kate was at a Prince concert and he invited her backstage. It started from there.
@@hanierfamily Kate wrote the song. Prince was originally asked to play guitar and add vocals. He left out the vocal part that Kate mostly wanted, so those vocal parts are actually sung by Lenny Henry.
