  • Which is the fastest EV for $70,000 to $80,000? Is it the base model Porsche Taycan or the Tesla Model Y Performance? Alistair Weaver and Carlos Lago find out in this EV drag race.
Why no Model 3 or Model S? Because we own a Model Y. Why do we say the Model Y costs $70,000? Because that's what we paid for it.
Back in November, we pitted these two performance electric vehicles against each other in our real-world EV range test (edmu.in/3qURBPp). Those test results showed the pricier Taycan 4S has more range than our Model Y even though the EPA estimates said differently.
With the new rear-wheel-drive base model Taycan available for testing, we wanted to see how the Taycan's 0-60 mph time compares to the Model Y's 0-60 mph time. Which EV accelerates quicker?

The entry-level Taycan lost the drag race but we still think it's a superb car. How much straight-line performance do you need - Taycan, 4S, Turbo, Turbo S?

Edmunds - a DRAG race is a pretty insignificant metric.
how about Measuring Range/Efficiency instead .
and the STOCK model Y Performance handles way better than ANY Porsche , specially at the Track.
the MODEL 3 has proven itself in 2020 when it won the Australian TARGA Rally and PIKES PEAK .
expect Model Y to set some RACE records as well.

.Edmunds - pretty EASY to figure out MODEL Y or any TESLA HP.
take the 1100+ HP of the Model S PLAID , Divide by 3, then Multiply by 2 .
      so, back of the Napkin math 1100 < 3 = 366 hp each x 2 = 733 Estimated HP .
but only TESLA Really knows, could be A LOT MORE for Dual Motor or perhaps a little less.

Realistically, these vehicles are in vastly different markets. Porsche knows their buyers well, and even at $200K, the Taycan Turbo S has been a sales leader for Porsche. That is because Porsche has succeeded in bringing all of the great qualities of their gas powered performance/luxury cars to their own electric vehicle. The materials and build quality, design, ride and feel are all Porsche caliber. I still enjoyed the comparison, but it is really academic/fun.

I own a Model Y Performance, and that "launch" never gets old. I'll certainly have to pay for it with increased tire wear, but it's fun to have that much power on demand.
But for me, it's more than just the raw power it has. There's also the ease of getting in and out of the car, hatchback utility, Autopilot doing the boring mundane driving parts on the freeway especially on a long trip, the Supercharger network to let you drive long distances with relative ease, over the air updates adding new features and improvements to the car, and probably best of all, the high crash safety rating, which will probably also be high on many people's list when choosing a car.
So no, Tesla isn't perfect, and there are certainly other cars out there that do one or two things better. But as a whole package, they are hard to beat if you can afford one. And Tesla is working on bringing out a $25k compact version within a few years, which is also exciting to me because it'll make them more accessible to even more people.

The correct comparison is the $80,000 model S with the base Taycan. My guess is this would be much worse. The base model S is nearly a second faster to 100 kph. If you add all the built in Tesla features to the Taycan, better stereo, memory seats, larger battery, you hit ~$130,000. That’s model S Plaid+ money.
The only thing I prefer about the Porsche is the styling of the front end. I don’t like the rear end. I know I don’t want a single rear engine, rear wheel drive car. It’s not the 1970’s, any more.

I don't even have to watch it to say that they're both scary fast for acceleration, but that's not the main reason you'd buy the Porsche. You'll get a car that has been fine-tuned for corners, has suburb fit/finish and a plush interior. But you'll pay a high price for it, not to mention you'll get less range and have to put up with the patchwork of non-Tesla chargers.
For me, because of range and the incredible supercharger network, and cost, I'd buy the Tesla. I've had a Porsche and while they're very nice, they are clearly meant for people with lots of disposal income.
I've driven the S, Y and X and I love them all, especially the X but my wife does not like the glass roofs so when it's time to buy in a couple years I'll have a hard decision if I really want to go all electric.

Comparing price with options vs base price is misleading. Model Y Performance is $60k, I don't care if you chose to get FSD on top of that. A base Porsche Taycan might theoretically sell for $80k but let's see what that number looks like after their notorious options and packages. Either go with just base price for respective trims or include options cost for both, but don't make it lopsided by only counting options on one car.

@@swunt10 Have you seen a single review that says a Tesla doesn't handle well. The reviews generally say that its weight is a bit high but it has a low center of gravity and handles well. The build quality is a reasonable argument but it has improved and it seems with the casting press Tesla is starting to use to make single piece front and rear ends, it should have good build quality going forward. The interior is ok, but obviously the materials in other luxury cars is better. Most American cars have plenty of options. I like that I can get all the major things most people would want at a set price. I bought my Jaguar XF when it came out and it was like that and I loved it. Now they have a ton of options and the price of my car would be at least $10k over what I paid with basically the same options. Porsche has a ton of option that will easily increase the cost by $20k+. You want to customize your car, go to a custom shop and they will make the interior and exterior look exactly how you like and will probably cost the same as what Porsche charges

Porsche's specs on the base Taycan list 0-60 in 5.1 sec. Of course they are conservative, but it still is not going to get anywhere close to the Model Y Performance (3.5 0-60). Closer to the mark is the Model 3 Long Range, which gets to 60 in 4.2 sec, but at $47K, it costs about half as much as the base Taycan. Closer in price and size is the new 2021 Tesla Model S Long Range, starting at $80K, but it does 0-60 in 3.1 sec, and is rated at 412miles of range. The race that I really want to see is the 2021 Model S Plaid (due out in a month) against the similarly priced ($120K+) Porsche Taycan 4S with the 93kW battery pack. But seeing how the Taycan 4S manages about the same acceleration as your Model Y Performance (12.2 sec 1/4) it will be far more embarrassing with the Model S Plaid's unbelievable (9.2 sec 1/4 mile) capability. This also compares well to the $186K Taycan "Turbo" S (10.3 sec 1/4 mi). Porsche is slated to soon release the EV Macan, which may be a closer match to the Model Y, at least in looks if not price or performance. But we will have to see. Thanks for the entertaining show!

The first Taycan "Turbo" S models managed 10.5-10.8 seconds in the 1/4 mile, but current production models make it in 10.3 seconds. I believe that Porsche silently tweaked and optimized later models to make 50-80HP more than the first ones tested. The initial base Taycans are probably optimized for efficiency (as that was a sore spot), plus Porsche doesn't want the base model to eat into the more profitable 4S sales.

The early Taycan 4S was really only offered here with the larger 93kW battery option, which brought the base up to $115K before additional options. Some of the Taycan "Turbo" S models were pushing $260K out the door.
