- Another week, another drag race with our long-term 2020 Tesla Model Y Performance. Over the past few months, you've seen the Model Y drag racing the BMW X3, Porsche Taycan, Chevy Corvette and Jeep Trackhawk. This time out, we've brought along another car from our long-term fleet, the 2020 Ford Shelby GT500.
It's no secret that the Shelby GT500 is one of the quickest American cars on the market, but the Model Y is no slouch in the quickness department. In this video, Alistair Weaver and Carlos Lago face off in these two rapid American cars. Which one has the quickest acceleration and 0-60 time? Can we get the launch right in the GT500? We answer these questions and more! It's Ford vs. Tesla and muscle vs. electric in this very special drag race of the 2020 Ford Shelby GT500 vs. the 2020 Tesla Model Y.

Let's just get this out of the way first: BAD DRIVERS! Read the full story edmu.in/3e4fJvt
And because they are bad drivers it makes having an EV more of a reason to race one.
Bad drivers? 740 hp and still not getting even close to a model y?

Boo hoo the GT500 is an amazing sports car we all love!
I will rather own a GT500 than a Electric Weed Plug, perform awesome at racetrack, dragstrip and Rolled Racing, GT500 will be a show-catcher on car meets, the Tesla will be a boring one.

@@slash11lipo If you watch reviews of this car you'll know that the GT500 is actually a great chasis. People just look at it and think "Mustang" but thats not the case at all. After all, this car matches a GT3RS on the track.

Wait until the Tesla Roadster comes out.
It's probably already beaten by the Rimac C2 & Lotus Elijah.
@@TheEwanMC In pure horse power, maybe but over all, most probably not. The Evija have a Range just under 350km and the C2 550km, the Roadster 2 should have around 1000km of range. Lotus says to the Evija to have a V/Max over 320km/h the Roadster 2 over 400km/h and the C2 412km/h. All three cars are ridiculously fast but the Roadster will be the most suitable for everyday use.
The numbers on the Roadster 2 and the Evija are estimations from Lotus and Tesla the numbers of the C2 looking final.
The C2 makes it to 300km/h in 11.3 seconds, the Roasdster 2 should go to V/max. (400km/h +) in 8.8 seconds, wich is way faster than the C2 (and truly ludicrous) and the Evija to 300 in just under 9 seconds, wich would make it also faster than the Rimac C2.
But there is an other "Problem".
The Evija will be limited to 130 units and will cost roughly 2'500'000$.
The C2 will be limited to 100 - 150 units and will cost around 2'000'000$.
The Roadster 2 Founders Edition will be limited to 1000 units with a price of 250'000$ followed by the standard
Roadster 2 wich will be unlimited and will cost, according to experience, around 200'000$, rather less.
But what all three will definately be able to do is, let looking every ICE hypercar, like a Citroen 2CV with engine failure.
I've got the Roadster @ 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 2.0 seconds & 9.0 seconds in the 1/4 mile.
The Rimac C2 @ 0-97 km/h (60 mph) from a standstill in 1.85 seconds.
C2's range @ 647 km (402 mi) on the NEDC cycle.
Of course the Rimac is just about here and the Roadster sometime in 2022 at the earliest?
I expect to see Plaid S to finally be able to beat the Taycan Turbo S on a consistent basis.
But of course the Lucid Air will be available by then.
It's Model S Plaid 1084+ BHP vs Lucid Air 1065 BHP.
Experience against the Porsche Taycan Turbo S would indicate that Tesla seems to overestimate their performance numbers while other manufacturers tend to be more conservative.
And it is also probably a little childish to assume Porsche is not planning to make a faster Taycans in the future as well.
It's true that solid state batteries from the Volkswagen group and Toyota won't be seen in full mass production until about 2025, but I'm not seeing a radical jump in battery tech before then.
Kinda making me feel that Tesla may be over promising.
Research completed by Bloomberg L.P. indicates that the estimate as to range per charge is optimistic, based on comments from Salim Morsy, electric vehicle analyst at Bloomberg New Energy Finance. In an article titled Tesla's Newest Promises Break the Laws of Batteries, Morsy indicated that the claimed battery capacity would require batteries that would be too large for the Roadster's small frame. "I really don't think the car you saw last week had the full 200 kilowatt hours in it. I don't think it's physically possible to do that right now."
Morsy's analysis directly contradicts Musk, who stated "this is what we are achieving in the prototype".
Tesla's new 4680 battery will still be made by Panasonic until at least 2022.
After that Tesla hopes to starts making its own batteries.
I'm not seeing any particular revolutionary tech that Tesla posses that can't be emulated by others.
OK, maybe self driving, but that's mainly software coding as far as I can see.
So let's agree, for the moment, that the new 4680 battery is a big step forward in terms of efficiency and cost.
And let's say sometime in 2022 Tesla can start to go it alone and make the batteries themselves.
Surely Panasonic can just start making the same type of battery for someone else then, having already been making them from up to that point?

Gt500 owner here. From my experience if it's less than 75 degrees outside and the tires aren't warm the car will not hook even on 1200 rpm launch . Now on a 5 mph roll full throttle stomp it hooks no problem on Michellins. This is on street driving.
Fellow owner here. Agreed. These reviews are getting ridiculous. I have no issue get some traction from a roll - while there is certainly some traction control aid, it still hooks up and goes. These videos are almost certainly scripted to provide the end result they’re looking for... My stock gt500 would absolutely murder a Tesla from a 50-100 roll.
So In better weather it might beat the even cheaper but faster model 3 performance or what? Or would it just get an edge over the crossover?
@@JFlywheel Teslas (all models, it seems) are “quicker” since they get 100% of power immediately and are awd. The GT500 is much “faster”. It will catch and pass any Tesla. Period. Tesla owners are delusional if they think otherwise. That doesn’t mean, however, a newer/faster version could not come out, but right now that car doesn’t exist. I’ve been next to a “ludicrous” Tesla - real world data.
@@tylerball7474 Right I was talking about a drag race though. New Plaid + S is 0-60 in 1.9 seconds fromt he factory and it's going to be very difficult to beat that, until the roadster comes out which will be faster than the S for sure... There are very few places near me where you race either at their maximum speed and not risk losing your license. But obviously, the faster maximum speed car will eventually pass the lower maximum speed car. Thats just not a concern for most people. Higher maximum speed is the advantage to having a transmission right now, however that is also the one part on a car I hate to do maintenance on or replace, so a lower top speed of 150mph or so is fine by me. So for most people there is little point in the GT 500 over a Tesla unless you want to get robbed at the pump, pay additional gas guzzler fees, more insurance, no AWD, and have 100x more maintenance just because the car looks and sounds cool and has a higher top speed. But I do get that people also buy them to modify them beyond stock and want to shift, but there needs to be more to it than that to sell a mustang for most people. Most people would be very sad getting spanked by a crossover grocery getter getting onto the freeway or at a stoplight. I mean in the real world, you might not even have a chance to enable launch mode etc... If your going to build a custom single purpose car for drag racing then yes, those single purpose cars will always win.
Think about this, the tri-motor cybertruck is going to be much faster than this performance Y, or the model 3. So now you have a GT-500 getting beat by a large factory truck... And those should also be rolling out later this year as well.
