  • I can’t be the only one who when a new game releases or I’m trying to think about which game I want to platinum next I immediately run to PSNProfiles or PowerPyx. Wherever there may be a guide or general trophy list breakdown to see what type of mess I might be getting myself into and based on that I’ll decide if that is a game I want to pursue the platinum/ 100% or if that’s maybe just a game I play to play. So, what types of trophies/ achievements help me decide that one way or the other? Well, let's find out!

@MayorHairBear the tomb raider 2013 reboot multiplayer is possible completely by yourself( for the level grind) the random trophies you will need atleadt 1 person. I promise you the game is worth it it’s really good and the no trophies are not that bad and can be done relatively smoothly

For me, It would be Messiah from Outlast 2. Some of the encounters are inconsistent and it is hard when you are playing in pitch-black darkness. I think that permadeath is the type of trophy that affects me the most. I'm fine with The Last of Us games since there are checkpoints, but ones that are set on the highest difficulty are ones I don't go for. those just require you to play the game flawlessly, especially in Mein Leben.

Anything that just looks tedious. Friend bought the Stanley parable, looked at the achievements. All looked doable, but too many looked like they would be a distraction to finishing a game I wasn’t really interested in playing so I’m not even bothering.

despite the usual mp trophies I despise trophies which have unreasonable high amounts of numbers tied to them...as an example I always use the "arounf the world" trophy from GRID (2018).....where you have to drive 40.000 kilometers.
To be clear, i don't mind the grind per se, but the number tied to it should be worth my time

Honestly man if I see more than 4 missable trophies then I hate it. Makes me feel like I spend more time looking at my phone checking I've done everything 1000 times than actually playing the game.
The Hero trophy on dragons dogma is one of those and I just strongly dislike it.

I had to do that with Playstation All Stars when those servers were still up in addition to using my Vita and other PS3 lol. I've had two more Xbox achievements on Virtua FIghter 5 Final Showdown for ages just because not only are the servers regional (I couldn't connect with an English guy) they're also borked.

One trophy I was concerned for when going for the platinum was the speed run trophy for Shadow of the Colossus where I had to beat the game in under 6 hours on the Hard difficulty, so imagine my surprise when I managed to do it in less than 2 and managed to get the no death run one on top of it. Goated game all the way through, do consider it

Collectible trophies/achievements can be pretty good if they give the player an encouragement to collect them.
Prototype 2 did it quite nicely. Adding small pings all over the map that don't explicitly tell you where yo find them, but hint that they might be *somewhere* in a particular area... And they even disappear once you collect them.

I think the multiple playthrough trophies are interesting because on the surface they don't seem to bad/wouldn't burn you out, IF you didn't do them back to back. Like if you beat the game, put it down, leave for a month or two and then come back, it doesn't sound too bad.
But if you're making content for it, like you do, and you need to platinum it for the video, it makes sense that can burn you out veeerry quickly. Especially for longer games, like Open-world games, or longer RPGs.

    • @MayorHairBear
      @MayorHairBear  3 месяца назад +6

Yeah that's a really good point and something I should have clarified! This is all from the perspective of doing this for a job because obviously in terms of multiple playthroughs yeah put the game down and come back and you're sweet but in terms of making content I sort of need that platinum experience to be done and that is where the burn out sinks in

In Code Vein there's a trophy linked to getting all ending, which doesn't sound too bad. Except an ending is linked (implied version) to your percentage completion on beating the final boss. I've already gotten the best ending. To do the "neutral" and "bad" endings would require me to actively avoiding story/quests in the game. I put the game down after that.

I am on 118 plats though 5 or 6 were auto-pop of PS4 to PS5 games. It’s a thrill to nail a hard game like DMC5 that most people haven’t done owing to its grind and difficulty.
And you can feel like you’ve really mastered the game and done most of what it offers, again something people who don’t hunt the trophy/achievements tend to care about as much.

I just finished Amnesia: Rebirth, and it was a short game you had to play twice, with collectables. The 2nd play-through was a tight speed run, but you could glitch through walls to by pass sections of the levels. And some of the collectibles you only had to collect a certain number of, not all, for the trophy to pop.
I get where you are coming from (after collecting over a 100 platinums) when looking into games to platinum. And I use a lot of the same methods in choosing them. But I also look a little deeper to see how much leeway some medals have as a deciding factor. Some of them may actual be a lot easier than what the medal seems to state or intended - due to glitches, or lack of programmer foresight, that make them easier to do.

Great video but you lost me somewhere at the 9:20 mark because the BGM you chose made me go "You have failed! We will find another way. Releasing control!" I totally spaced out there. XD
Back on topic though, I agree with pretty much all of your picks being a bit of a bother when going for a platinum. I will still try to go for it though but the one that I dispise the most is multiplayer trophies in singleplayer games. Especially if the servers are down. I have one game in my trophy list that I will forever be unable to get the plat in because it was the first game I ever played on the PS3 and the servers went down before I even knew what trophies were.
Also I would like to bring up one type of trophy that you haven't covered that I find very annoying. It's the one that forces you to play a game in a very specific liniar way with no room for free choices, especially in a game where you can make free choices. The big offender here is The Witcher 3. I forgot which trophy it was but you had play through the game in a very specific way, enganging in conversations with NPC in a specific order such as to not lock yourself out of a side mission as well as making specific dialog choices no matter what you might want to choose yourself. Such trophies are horrible because you get locked out of playing the game as it's supposed to be played since you have to follow a guide down to the T. It's a great game, but having to have a guide with me start to finish kinda ruined the experience a bit for me. No idea why developers think that something like this would be a good idea for players to go through when experiencing their game.

I’ve got all the achievements for pvzgw2 except for 1.
It’s the one where you have to beat boss hunt on crazy difficulty and the only way to do a boss hunt is when it’s the special mission in the town hall. Every couple months a new town hall event mission becomes available and it picks between a bunch of other missions that are not boss hunts.
I’m not even sure if it’s possible anymore.

i do agree with a lot of the stuff you mentioned in this video with the exception of speed running the re games. i have the platinum trophies for re2 remake and re4 remake and those speed runs were not too bad. god of war 2005 also has a simple speed run trophy as well. i always check a trophy list before playing a game. i also play all my games on blank accounts to make sure i can get 100% before adding it to my account. as of right now the only exceptions are the dlc for ffxvi and spider-man 2 as those were added afterward and i have not gone back to them yet. right now i have 110 platinum trophies in the span of the last 4 years

I agree with all your points except the one regarding resident evil games but it seems I'm not the first one in the comments to suggest you try them out. The requirements for these games seem insane on first glance but really aren't that bad once you get into them. And that's coming from someone who usually tries to avoid playing games on the hardest difficulty and also someone who hates multiple playthroughs. I don't even like having to play the same game twice but a resident evil game I can easily do 5 runs in a row. It doesn't feel like just playing the same game multiple times but rather like a roguelike, where it's just natural to do run after run. That's probably because you have different challenges in these different runs. And most of the time, the requirements aren't really that bad. For example I think RE2 you have to beat in under 3 hours or so and you can usually do it in 1h 30m if you already know all the right ways.
Resident Evil Village if you do your first playthrough on normal or hard difficulty, then you're already good enough to do a "knife only"-speedrun on your 2nd playthrough, where you just avoid most of the enemies. Might even be able to combine it with the "no-healing" and "don't talk to the merchant"-trophies, if you do it in new game+. That's how easy that game is. You can then get an infinite ammo weapon that basically one-shots everything and do your 3rd playthrough on the highest difficulty and it will feel easier than your first normal playthrough.
So if you're still unsure, you could start with RE Village because I think that's the easiest platinum. Although actually the platinum of RE2 is quite easy aswell because you don't have to get all the in game achievements done in order to get the platinum. Like for the platinum, you don't even need to get an S+ rank on hardcore difficulty but I would highly reccomend to do it anyway because it unlocks the infinite rocket launcher, which completely breaks the game and makes every other challenge a breeze.
Sorry for the wall of text. I guess I like Resident Evil 😅

Getting the special weapons is the actual reward for the timed playthroughs, so I really wouldn't recommend playing them if you were just going to do them for trophies.

I never had a bigger anxiety attack playing a game compared to the one i had during Psychonauts Meat Circus. If you miss a single collectible in the level, you have to start from the beginning. If you dont have the right item in your inventory, start from rhe beginning. And the level takes like an hour to get through casually so it was definitely the most nervewracking part of the Psychonauts platinum

I have lots of platinums (like 500 or so without easy crappy games), i like challenging games and also easy ones (usually after a tough platinum, I start with a chill one), I play pretty much everything, but there are very serious limitation to me. One of them and in my opinion should be mentioned in the video are buggy trophies. Not that ones where you can actually retring them by restarting the game or the level, I'm referring to glitchs where you need to restart the run or reinstall the entire game. I'm pretty unlucky, so if I read on psn profile the label "buggy", is an easy skip. We can include also unobtainable trophies cause of glitch or closed servers. I'll be very upset for not unlocking a shiny platinum because that stupid trophy that requires me to play a single online match and the server are closed. Last but not least, coop trophies. Not referring to easy trophy like playing one match together or doing something with the second controller plugged afk, but to trophy that requires long time (like playing all the game in coop) or trophy where you have actually to play with 2 controllers. I don't want to convince a friend just to do something for a stupid tedious trophy. Hope you understand me, english is not my primary language 😅

I can agree with the multi play through trophies, these can be such a time sink. Plus risk making a game you have enjoyed, turn into something you hate just down to wanting to get the thing finished. That's why I now only aim to hit a 50% plus percent, on a first playthrough and then will wait any number of years before going for a plat or 100%. This year I revisited AC Revelations and got 100% after having last played the game to plat at 84% back in 2013. So by 2034 hopefully some of the games I'm playing now might eventually get a plat and/or 100% 😂

Really liked the video, BUT you should do the Resident Evil trophys - the 'speedrun' trophys are not hard (and I'm just an average gamer) because the RE game balance thing with unlocks like infinit ammo, knife and new guns so the difficulty of the speedrun is countered by that and those are really fun.
I'm also kinda back in the trophy hunt game, 11 platniums this years so far.
I'm impressed by the Mafia one, I can't get past the race ond highest difficulty. I mostly hate mssable trophys when there is no good savepoint, like the ending of DREDGE is perfect, because the last save point is right before.

Looking at the list of games I dropped the 100%'s for, the category largely either falls under having multiplayer achievements or requiring multiple playthroughs. There are some on that list I can see myself trying for eventually like Metal Gear Solid V, a few Resident Evils and Yakuza Kiwami 2, but I doubt I will ever clear up all of them. When your backlog has as many games as mine, I just can't justify revisting something I finished the campaign for to achievement hunt as opposed to starting up something completely new most of the time.

Especially when I died at the boss fight before the Odin Control Chamber. The online dies quickly, usually before I can even get around to attempting it, and even if I get to start it, it usually dies before I can get all the online trophies. Games such as Tomb Raider (2015) and the earlier Assassin's Creed games, still bothers me that I'll never get the platinum on those amazing games for that reason.
