3:20 software developer here. It's not running calculations in the background at all. This is exactly why you see this happening. Each frame it's multiplying the player's movement by the time since this last frame. Typically this is a really small amount. But when you alt/tab out of the game the game essentially freezes. When it regains focus, however long it was frozen it multiplies like it usually does, only now the value is _way_ larger than expected. The reason walls get skipped is because the game never checks if the next movement point goes through a wall because this technically shouldn't be possible. It checks if current pos + (vector * time) lands you in a wall, if so then you have collided. If your movement pushes you clear past the wall, then as far as the game is concerned you're good to go.
Underrated comment, I love when people with the know-how on these things give an in depth explanation, I will never need to use this info it's just nice to know.
Mind if I ask you a question? I'm a software dev too, but not in the game department (the closest thing I did to that are mods), and there's one thing about this explanation that just keeps boggling my mind. I've played Super Meat Boy quite a lot these past few days, utilizing alt/tab glitch quite a bit, and there is one peculiar thing. Interactable tiles. If you alt tab while on an interactable tile (for example, a moving platform, or the gravel/disappearing blocks), the game will always push you down the moment you alt tab. Why is that? Is the game actually checking for downwards vector each frame and detecting a collision so cancelling it? If so, (which would be a bit weird I think), why wouldn't that happen on solid ground? I know you're just making educated guesses based on what's happening so you don't have a definitely real answer, but this one thing just makes me very curious every time I play. Btw. just to add onto that, it doesn't happen on all "dynamic" tiles. For examples, on tiles that disappear after collecting a key, or tiles that are affected by switches. Alt/tab on those acts like on normal solid ground. It's just on the "more" dynamic tiles, like moving platforms or ground that disappears when you walk on it.

So many RUclips videos build suspense and mess around with your feelings for 30 minutes and pretend they can’t do something only to reveal they actually can after working on it for 50 hours. You get straight to the point, level by level, if you can beat it you can, and if you can’t beat it you say so straight away. It’s so refreshing. not gonna lie, a playable character that can let you play the game completely different from the normal gameplay is an ingenious idea I hope a platformer game can make this a possibility
Shovel Knight's extra campaigns are like that too, although the levels are different. Plague knight was very fun, completely different from Shovel Knight
fantastic production quality! Not going to say anything like "you deserve 100000 subscribers" though. Sub counts alone don't account for niche genres or communities. However, I do think that you will have extreme amounts of growth if you can keep up this high level of quality and innovation! Thanks for this entertaining video!
A game where Tofu Boy is basically Neo from The Matrix... hmmmmmmmmmm Edit: yes he'd still be absurdly slow and sluggish. To balance that, you'd use "glitches" to walk through walls on the air, jump mid-air, etc. Combine that with hard as nails challenge levels that _take advantage of this_, and you have a potentially amazing original idea for another rage game platformer if you replace Tofu Boy with another character entirely.
That's some serious dedication you have. I watched the horse guys video a while back, like 3 days after it was made, and I thought it was hilarious. You found the one glitch he said we needed.
Wow!! I love the how you actually counted the beats of the music to make it across the gaps without looking. It doesn't even feel like a glitch/cheating, it just feels like you're playing an entirely new game, especially when you make use of ledges that would be entirely useless in a normal run of the game.
I'm pretty excited that I watched him beat light 4-13 live in a stream today. He was working on the dark level 4-13 and during practice on the light version found a way to mid-air alt glitch into the bandaid area and then alt glitch from that middle platform into those locked key blocks in that tube on the right, which lead directly to bandaid girl. Normally, it seems the laser kills you if you pass through the beam, even when alt glitching. You just register as dead wherever you end up. For some reason in a very particular location / angle you can bypass the kill trigger. In the dark map this area has more spikes and is much harder to get into, so he couldn't reproduce the solution before the stream ended.
This is insanely impressive. I hope this gets you some recognition because not only is this well edited, it's am awesome callback to the original video.
How come the dark world levels were never touched? Are they just not counted for this category? Even if they aren't, I still think it would be an interesting endeavor, at the very least.
Congrats on the video blowing up!! Wow, looking at your other videos and seeing your most recent post blown out of the water is super cool! Wishing the best on your youtube endeavours :)
Apparently, when the update that adds Tofu Boy was first announced, PETA was pleased to see the team behind Super Meat Boy put their character as a cameo, stating they're "excited to see which character preforms better, but since vegetarians live longer, we bet on our Super Tofu Boy". Oh boy, they did not see that coming...
I love how he says alt glitching + jump glitching allowing you to jump in the air is "like Super Smash Brothers", as if double jumps in games never existed outside of those games.
I love that you used some of the PS Vita / Console Meat Boy music, its a vibe to listen to while watching you strategize on each level. Even if not as good as the original music, the alternate Super Meat Boy soundtrack constantly goes unnoticed!
Ok hear me out. Meat boy level maker with an alt glitch setting and tofu boy as a playable character. It would be insane to see what people would do with that.
I've never heard of this game before, but for some reason it keeps showing up after videos and now in my recommended. So I've finally decided to watch it.
HELL YEAH :3 love this video,, super impressive plays, and you have a great exposition and editing!! also dont know if it was intentional but pannenkoek reference when you first explained the glitches x3
Alright i know it's been like 7 months and no one will see this but what if there was a game where tofu boy figures out PETA has been abusing animals and goes on a mission to stop them the gameplay would be finding keys that open animal cages after a certain amount of animals freed you would beat the level and go onto the next you would also have to deal with tofu boys bad jump
There may be something to that to get like really far alt glitches or something, but it wouldn't help in 3-2 because of the salt obstacle. It reaches up JUST A LITTLE higher than the ground when you start the alt glitch so when you move just a little in its direction, the salt kills you.
@@gosugarage Hmm, interesting, have you explored any possibilties with altglitching while sliding down the wall from the roof? It’s cool to see Plasmaman’s idea spreading through the community, I believe we can get to all levels eventually!
unless you find a way to jump higher with tofu boy, all levels will always be impossible because of 5-10 and 5-13 at the very least (this is also the issue for all the other impossible levels)
not gonna lie, a playable character that can let you play the game completely different from the normal gameplay is an ingenious idea I hope a platformer game can make this a possibility
most unlockable characters in this game are like that
Shovel Knight's extra campaigns are like that too, although the levels are different. Plague knight was very fun, completely different from Shovel Knight
Tails and Knuckles in early Sonic games.
Luigi in the New Super Luigi U mode in New Super Mario Bros U.
Apparently tofu lets you teleport. Nobody tell PETA that they were right.
Tofu Boy casually breaking time, space and reality itself to be useful
truly the character of all time
PETA: insults super meat boy
super meat boy: mocks PETA making a weak ass character inspired by PETA
gamers: "well that sounds like a challenge"
He's not just a weak-ass character, the devs literally just took the exact physics he had in the PETA game.
@@PriffyVioleThat is genius
@@PriffyVioleif that's actually true I can't imagine how hard the devs laughed realizing he couldn't beat level 1
@@PriffyViolewait, WHAT?
love when people go back to old games like these and discover new stuff. Videogames are truly timeless :)
So what I'm getting from this is that all the joking about Tofu Boy being useless and weak is just a skill issue 😉
fantastic production quality!
Not going to say anything like "you deserve 100000 subscribers" though. Sub counts alone don't account for niche genres or communities.
However, I do think that you will have extreme amounts of growth if you can keep up this high level of quality and innovation!
Thanks for this entertaining video!
A game where Tofu Boy is basically Neo from The Matrix... hmmmmmmmmmm
Edit: yes he'd still be absurdly slow and sluggish. To balance that, you'd use "glitches" to walk through walls on the air, jump mid-air, etc. Combine that with hard as nails challenge levels that _take advantage of this_, and you have a potentially amazing original idea for another rage game platformer if you replace Tofu Boy with another character entirely.
Ah lost the heart thanks to edit, oops
@@qwertyzorovague here's your heart back ;)
@@gosugarage thanke
I like to think that the tofu boy in Super Meat Boy is the aftermath of the Tofu Boy game.
you know it's a good video when a new exploit is discovered mid run
Vsauce reference? 1:18
Goes to show that your veggies are just as important as your meats. Awesome video!
I love you fact that even with multiple glitches and tricks Tofu Boy still struggles to accomplish anything
One of my favorite videos uploaded to this site in a VERY long time
LAZYY MATT MAN
would not have know any of this without you, even the tofu boy code! thanks and i love the videos!
Bro give this man more views and subs this video is so good
You deserve more than 30k views. Pretty good video and skill, even trying and beating "impossible" levels.
what a surprisingly good video from such a small channel, that was very fun and informative to watch.
Man, that Mario 64 music makes me think about parallel universes. Very well done video, I don't even play SMB and I still found it very entertaining.
Can't wait for tofu% speedruns with any% completion
This is insanely impressive. I hope this gets you some recognition because not only is this well edited, it's am awesome callback to the original video.
I can relate to your name
Nice PFP!
How come the dark world levels were never touched? Are they just not counted for this category? Even if they aren't, I still think it would be an interesting endeavor, at the very least.
You made history, man! Congratz!
Damn, this is some solid production value for someone with less than 1k subs. Well done!
3:17 so this is how king crimson works
Funny how well this video did am I right ?
Loved your content, and see that you're getting visibility it's great !
PETA: Am I a joke to you?
Edmund: *yes*
peta you little f
Congrats on the video blowing up!! Wow, looking at your other videos and seeing your most recent post blown out of the water is super cool! Wishing the best on your youtube endeavours :)
Apparently, when the update that adds Tofu Boy was first announced, PETA was pleased to see the team behind Super Meat Boy put their character as a cameo, stating they're "excited to see which character preforms better, but since vegetarians live longer, we bet on our Super Tofu Boy".
Oh boy, they did not see that coming...
Tofuboy's real power is ignoring reality.
Now, the question remains: Is beating these levels as Tofu Boy easier than getting an A+ on them legit?
Definitely depends on the level. Some levels are the same honestly. Like 1-2 or 1-14
I love how he says alt glitching + jump glitching allowing you to jump in the air is "like Super Smash Brothers", as if double jumps in games never existed outside of those games.
I love that you used some of the PS Vita / Console Meat Boy music, its a vibe to listen to while watching you strategize on each level. Even if not as good as the original music, the alternate Super Meat Boy soundtrack constantly goes unnoticed!
You found a new glitch!?
Dude, you get to name it!
he can go through walls because he’s iron deficiency is so bad that he died and turned into a ghost
So the long and short of it is...
If you wanna beat Super Meat Boy with Tofu Boy, you gotta turn it from a puzzle platformer into a rhythm game.
Ok hear me out. Meat boy level maker with an alt glitch setting and tofu boy as a playable character. It would be insane to see what people would do with that.
pretty entertaining vid! gotta thank the algorithm for recommending this.
Dude i've never tried meat boy in my entire life but this looks sick
I've never heard of this game before, but for some reason it keeps showing up after videos and now in my recommended. So I've finally decided to watch it.
HELL YEAH :3 love this video,, super impressive plays, and you have a great exposition and editing!! also dont know if it was intentional but pannenkoek reference when you first explained the glitches x3
0:37 "Meat Boy isn't even meat, he's actually just a boy with no skin"... Where... Where do you think meat comes from? What do you think meat... is?
😂
Meat is muscle
Tofu Boy with glitches actually turns it into a really interesting challenge
Absolute mad man. Easily earned my subscription.
This is basically how King Crimson works
That's crazy! When i tried this i didn't know about the midair jump so i could only beat the first 2 chapters.
As a vegetarian, I approve this message
biblically accurate tofu boy
Peta approved run. Who needs to run fast when you have the power of space time manipulation?
Tofu Boy is so weak he needs to break the fabric of reality to do everyone else can do, we just accidentally gave him his own character arc
Tommy Tallarico's mom must be very proud of this one
Alright i know it's been like 7 months and no one will see this but what if there was a game where tofu boy figures out PETA has been abusing animals and goes on a mission to stop them the gameplay would be finding keys that open animal cages after a certain amount of animals freed you would beat the level and go onto the next you would also have to deal with tofu boys bad jump
With 3-2, would it not be theoretically possible to alt-jump glitch, then alt glitch *again* on the frame that it thinks you're grounded to walk in?
There may be something to that to get like really far alt glitches or something, but it wouldn't help in 3-2 because of the salt obstacle. It reaches up JUST A LITTLE higher than the ground when you start the alt glitch so when you move just a little in its direction, the salt kills you.
@@gosugarage Hmm, interesting, have you explored any possibilties with altglitching while sliding down the wall from the roof? The discovery of Alt-Jump glitches makes me think it might be possible to use the single frame of grounded-ness in other ways? Like, maybe while wall slide-alt glitching theres another frame-perfect trick that could be done to get through?
@@SleebyTomato I definitely tried alt glitching while sliding in that level, you just void off the bottom. Who knows though, I'm just one guy, I'm SURE there are tricks that I haven't discovered.
@@gosugarage I'm no where near the level of commitment or skill required for it lmao, but I'll see if I can figure anything out for it. 3-2 interests me the most just because of how CLOSE it is to being doable
@@SleebyTomato you actually gave me an idea! you might be able to alt-jump glitch INTO the wall itself and get enough height to sneak back on the inner side of the wall and hop your way up... I'll be trying this for sure
I love when people do stuff like this. Thank you dude!
itd be cool if glitchless levels were also marked differently
damn 13 years later this game still kicks ass
I love watching videos about breakthroughs in games
