      It's like watching a movie that was in black and white now in "living color". Sure, it's visually a pretty big change, however you know exactly what's going to happen and the company wants to charge you more than you've ever paid for this particular experience. No upgrade options for people who have already bought the game once or twice, no consideration of missing content like the multiplayer, just planting a full priced $70 on it like it's an original and completely unique title that didn't come out 9 years ago, wasn't remastered 8 years ago and didn't receive a 4K PS4 Pro patch 5 years ago...

    You've done an excellent job explaining the upgraded tech/animations and how it makes TLOU1 feel different. The game looks *insane* but I hope, for the gaming landscape's sake, it is a collosal bomb.
    The only thing companies listen to is their wallet. I refuse to justify ND charging full price for a world we've already lived in. It's still the same characters, locations, combat scenarios and story beats, and it should be reflected in the price.

      At this point I don’t even think that is a possibility, specifically due to the HBO series premiering soon. Even if at launch the game doesn’t have an explosive opening, once the series airs the sales are going to skyrocket (a la The Witcher on Netflix).
      Sony is incredibly good at marketing and understanding their target audiences; and this game would not have been made unless it was a near guarantee it would bring in boatloads.

    Whilst I appreciate your unique opinion on TLOU's fourth* version in less than a decade, I think we need to stop gauging re-releases on original merits and instead gauge them more in context. Whilst you've done this to some degree and that's WAY more than most journalists have done, the presumption is that "great game released 3 times before and it was great, therefore THIS version is at minimum, great as a baseline", so the "score" can never go down, only up.
    However when we're talking about a ps5 remake of a ps4pro update of a ps4 remaster of a ps3 game, the product in isolation and the product in context no longer marry up.
    I for one think we need to scrutinise these remasters and remakes FAR harder.

    People talk about Part 1 like future tech isnt going drastically out do PS5. There is no ray tracing, these character models will look dated in 10 years, there would even better character rigs allowing for even more expressive animations, machine learning hardware would allow for even more realistic enemy AI, so on and so forth. So, should Naughty Dog remake The Last of Us again in 10 years? Video games is a medium that is uniquely tied to technology, no video game ever has not been constrained by technology. Its about despite the current technological constraints, does the game accomplish its goals? This remake is the most redundant game Sony has ever made.
    Encouraging a remake of a not even 10 year old game is just irresponsible knowing this industry, knowing how money hungry it is. Cant wait for every half decent PS3 game to be remade. Who wants original new games anyways?

    • @TheEPICskwock

      You clearly dont understand the power of nostolgia. I would rather play a remake of some of the best ps3 games then play a lot of new games coming out. Of course future tech will out do it one day. Thats like saying whats the point of buying a 4k tv when 8k will be a thing? Whats the point in buying a PS5 and wasting you money when the PS6 will be out in a few years?

    • @PursuedByAMemory
      @PursuedByAMemory 2 года назад

      @@TheEPICskwock So you would rather not have the same talent that worked on those PS3 games try to break new ground with more interesting games? AAA gaming is in shambles right now(TLOU1 Remake is a symptom, i.e. publishers prioritizing expensive remakes than making new experiences that help inspire new gameplay ideas and stories).
      Uncharted The Lost Legacy's creative director(original The Last of Us' director of photography) spent 2 years of his life to work on a Remake of a perfectly fine existing game, would you rather not have him work on his dream project so we can get something even more interesting stories than a zombie survival one? How about ND as a whole leaves this tired TLOU world behind so we can move on from this creative stagnancy at ND?
      You did not get my point about PS5. Games are always limited by technology, chasing some technological finale for a game is massively misguided(rather its a ploy by marketing to sell the game, just keep repeating better graphics and people will come) as its always going to become dated, such an exercise would require constant upkeep and fiddling. Its like George Lucas constantly fiddling with Episode 4, just leave it alone, with warts and all.

    • @samuelconnolly347
      @samuelconnolly347 2 года назад

      Not a fair comparison. Lootboxes are rightly criticised for introducing gambling mechanics into games, and can often be addictive. While I think microtransactions can be okay in F2P games, they have no place in full-price titles. The Last of Us remake probably doesn't need to exist, but you get what you pay for - a complete game as advertised, not part of a game where you have to pay yet more money to get the full experience or do something as rudimentary as give your character a new hat.

  • @jaysonagli6210
    @jaysonagli6210 2 года назад +24

    It’s unfortunate that Sony decided to implement their new “70 dollar native PS5” rule here. Even if the price is justified by the effort that went into making this the “definitive version” of TLOU, the price tag was always going to be an issue. 50 dollars and nobody would have said a thing.
    That being said, I understand that the target audience for this is the hardcore fans (like myself; the game does more than enough in my eyes to warrant a purchase) and more importantly the new comers. Those who will inevitably take up interest due to the HBO release and those who are new to the PlayStation ecosystem that missed it prior. There is too much money on the table to not charge 70 in Sony’s eyes.
    TLOU sold a whopping 20 million copies; but even that is in total less than a fifth of the PS4 install base, not to mention those who skipped that console or will be playing on PC. Between that and the new industry leading accessibility options I’m just happy for those who will be experiencing this amazing title for the first time, in the best possible way.

    • @minecraftgravityguy
      @minecraftgravityguy 2 года назад +3

      50$ is already too much for this. 30$ is arguably reasonable since it lacks improvements to gameplay and the multiplayer. But the Uncharted Remastered Collection was ported to a new engine, had new lighting, models, textures and optimizations while costing 20$ for each game(and the OG games were stuck on the PS3).

This is a flagship title for Sony, and is one of the best graphical showcases available. 30 dollars is not only disingenuous but is far outside the realm of possibility.
      To be clear I’m not saying 70 dollars is reasonable, but given the amount of change and upgrade present (even without massive changes to gameplay) anything less than 50 dollars is basically asking for it for free; especially considering the target audience.

If you got it for free, that factor doesn't really come into play anymore. It's kind of like when you make a sandwich for yourself it can be good, but from someone else and at no cost, it's even better.
      And just to cover this base too: As much as games are art and should be judged as such, they're also still experiences that we pay for, so the money factor coming in to reviews is something I don't see as bad either. It's just realistic as far as I'm concerned.

      The game itself is in fact the same, you're _absolutely_ right. But the _experience_ is altered and actually different. Most often altered by the producers of the game who dictate the price, though sometimes it's just a matter of having gotten it as a gift.
      Either way though, it's an altered experience because we judge these things based on the value of including them in our lives, while price point or free reception do play some part in that judgement. Even if how much of a part it plays varies from person to person.

    70$ is no price for a videogame. Much less in the current state of the world. 40$ is very pricey for a remaster (one that includes everything that game had to offer and it’s dlcs and expansions, that maintains or improves on optimization and performance, and this has been industry standard and I don’t give a shit how greedy Sony and ND wants to be they can f*ck right off), 70$ is beyond unacceptable and pretending it is is dissapointing and pathetic. It was pathetic when EA, Activision and T2 (and Sony too) did it before, it’s getting worse now. The previous TLoU Remaster had an upgrade path and the Uncharted TRILOGY of games remade in the Bluepoint engine that improved models, lighting, texture, optimization and performance that was stuck on the PS3 EXCLUSIVELY cost at most 60$ in TOTAL. And this version doesn’t even have the online because it could compete with their next game and they are scared and lazy to put the resources to make it available again like they know they should, especially for a new release version, even worse since it’s the only version that will be officially available and optimized for PC! And the excuse it’s worth it for those who never played the game before is even more moronic because the game is more dated and has less content than ever before while being at it’s most inaccessible for being exclusive for PS5 and clearly not being accessible to anything lower than high-end PCs when it launches at some point hopefully(?). It’s terrible and bad when Nintendo does it to the 3D All-Stars Collection and Zelda Skyward Sword for Switch and Twilight Princess and Windwaker HD but Sony and ND get a pass?
    Vote with your wallets, don’t buy it even when in sale because this greed is what drives this industry to be as greedy, exploitative and shitty for consumers as it is! Btw Check out other real Remakes if you want to know what a remake should look like, not a glorified remaster with a name only there for marketing reasons that pisses on the reputation that both Naughty Dog and Sony Studios had for themselves. As far as I'm concerned, writing, directing and acting in TLOU are where it's at. Graphical fidelity is nice but I never played the game thinking "it's nice but if only it looked better then it'd be really good".
    It can be good for first time comer who only have part 2 as a comparison point. I've often seen people disparage graphics in games less than 10 years old as being "dated" it's kinda depressing but that's how it is.
    Still pricy though, it's more expensive than the remake when I bought it and it has less content.
    Thinking about the newcomers, I would have added a spoiler warning to keep "that scene" completely fresh for them.

      Aside from the more expressive faces, I just do not find value in this new one. Also changing the facial structure of most characters, is not a plus for me. It is almost like new people with many of redesigns characters. I think Bill and David look great but Ellie used to look more unique but...

    This is the video game equivalent of colorizing Citizen Kane. Sure, colour is more technically advanced than black and white, but being in black and white was part of the art's identity. The original PS3 look of The Last Of Us may not look modern anymore, but it was the original look of the art and therefore has value, unlike this PS5 version which too will look old years from now, but unlike the original, lacks the historic and cultural significance. It is a worthless product.

      I don't see how a better version of something can just be dismissed as worthless. Also for clarity I've never even been able to enjoy these games personally so this isn't fanboyism clouding my judgement or me going on the defense for a game I never really cared about. I just genuinely don't see how a product being improved can make it worse.
      I don't think it's right to devalue art based on it being iterative as opposed to static and fixed. The originals of an iterated project will obviously have more historical value, but that has no bearing on the worth of a media/artistic experience.

    While i agree the character detail and animation is much better i have a hard time saying the game overall looks any much better than the ps3/4 version. During gameplay some sections just look strange, almost uncanny or overly sterile. In some cutscenes I think the 'visual upgrade' simply doesnt work because you'll have hyper detailed faces that models seem to change when theres a cut. Some individual cutscenes have this strange quality where it seems like a lot of focus went into one characters animation but not the other so much so the characters look literally out of place and its jarring to have some of the character models seemingly morph depending on how close you are to them in some cutscenes. This could be owed to me only seeing these through streams/youtube compression but idk its like there was a change in art style/direction that took away from the objecively improved textures/polycount yadada.

    I still fundamentally dislike this remake, as it clothes the original I so loved in the visual language and art design of the sequel I found such a disappointing, hollow, pretentious endeavour that falls completely flat. On top of that ridiculous asking price. I loathe how established gamejournalism is rating this so highly while being mostly a graphical enhancement: they are effectively rating it for the same game it was all those years ago. Yet now that rating carries the added context of "yes, light-ish remakes of this nature carry our stamp of approval and high praise, and at this pricepoint to boot. Carry on." That is a dangerous precedent to condone in such a money hungry industry, one that has already demonstrated the depths of greed it can stoop to.
    Yet you raise interesting points where it pertains to graphical and technical enhancements that can heighten the experience even more. I wholeheartedly agree, it looks so well done. I absolutely dislike the narrative of TLoU2, but I loved the audiovisual achievements, and here it's no different. They really are simply stunning. The improved gameplay also was quite engaging, and it's a shame it wasn't introduced in the remake. It definitely would've helped support that pricepoint more.
    All it really leaves me with in the end is just bitter disappointment and reminiscing on what could've been would the art design be more in line with TLoU. Think of the bleak cinematography, where TLoU was more colorful and hopeful, and above all those damn character designs. I know, it may seem a very petty thing, but this is a character drive game. And you wouldn't like seeing your favourite characters designed in odd ways, would you? Those are not the Ellie and Joel I came to know, they look completely different, wackier and worse for it -- same for Tess, less importantly so. Though one wonders if any of this was ever a problem if TLoU2 was absolute narrative gold and didn't leave such a bad taste; that taste, the visual language and art design that one associates with it, taints everything going forward for those that were disappointed. And this remake proves it.
    I just hope that whatever Naughty Dog has coming up will be as good (narratively) as I've known them in the past.

      But this comment is just so over dramatic and being overly sensitive over pointless stuff.
      The remake looks better regardless if it used the same engine of another game I wasn’t a fan of. And I even liked the changes in character design on most characters in the remake
      Also, you want all reviewers to focus on the 70 price tag? What happens when the game does down on sale or is available on the PS subscriptions? Wouldn’t those reviews feel dated if they focuses too much on the launch price?

    Again I always thought when given something it's expected to give a favorable review. Most reviews feel scripted.

    Lambhoot did a video on Resident Evil 4 VR a while back, right? I'm getting those same vibes from this, discussion on a new version of a game that, if you're really into the original material, makes it seem like a completely new and expanded experience that's practically required just for those little touches. But if you're anyone else, it won't really change your perspective.
    Also everyone go subscribe to Lambhoot. You'll be told to do so again at the end of the year anyways.

    I'm inclined to pick this up second hand a year or so down the line when Sony makes a cheaper PS5 or one with more than a termite's cheeks worth of storage. I played the OG back on the PS Triple and loved it, so I missed the PS4 version out because I didn't think the upgrade was worth it. Now we have a new version realised from the ground up on fundamentally better hardware, I think that does make for a genuinely compelling case to buy the newer version and try it again. Just not for £65. Stray costs like £30 and is one of the most impressive games this generation so far - against that price and that quality of experience, everything else is a REALLY hard sell.

    • @iurigrang
      @iurigrang 2 года назад

      Stray is a 5 hour game, tlou part 1 is 15, with arguably a lot more replayability. Stray is a good game, but I cannot see it as a good bang for buck.

    It was a tech masterpiece back then but it is one of the most overrated stories ever. Its so generic and predictable and for some reason everyone pretends that there was some epic twist. It should have been obvious from first 10 minutes after Ellie shows up what the ending would likely be

      @@amysteriousviewer3772 yeah lmao i was definitely too young to care when BrBa came out, i think i'd heard about it around when a chunk of the fanbase was still in kind of a "skylar bad walt badass, i'm just like rick sanchez" phase.
      it's only now that BCS is over that i'm actually tempted to look into how those stories of personal tragedies unfold. i mean i'm a star wars prequels fan ffs, i'll gladly check out how a down-on-his-luck hardworking wifeguy slowly descends into darker and darker actions while his complicated relationship with his brother deteriorates into devastating loss and heinous deeds... especially that final note of tentative recompense at the end👏

    I think the facial animations played a big part in TLOU Part 2 too.
    Towards the end, when Ellie chases Abby down, you really don't want to play the game anymore. You've seen enough death by that point that killing anymore is uncomfortable.
    It becomes a laborious task, and the facial animation of humans struggling was the straw that broke the camel's back.
