because $$$. they know Last of Us fans are willing to rebuy the same shit over and over again. happened when they re-released and remastered it to the PS4, the PS5, etc etc.
For me personally, the price tag would have been worth it if they had gone the extra mile and upgraded the gameplay with some mechanics from last of us 2, namely the dodge mechanic. The prone I could have done without, since stealth is already pretty decent, but the melee combat and combat in general had much more depth in part 2 which made it so much more fun, so I was really hoping to see that here.
I don’t know. I keep seeing what Microsoft is doing with their performance boost and series x updates for older titles and it tends to look on par fidelity wise and slightly faster frame rates then what was done in this title.
I mean hell, gear 3 and 4 look way sharper. Even the update they made to the gears one ultimate edition from 2014-2015 looks crazy good and these are free updates.

Okay, so it’s clear that they put considerable effort into the visuals and such, but I’m not so sure it’s as greatly appreciated as it would’ve been had they chosen to remake a game that DOESN’T hold up when viewed through the modern lens (and I don’t care what anyone says but TLOU Remastered on the PS4 still holds up perfectly AND maintains smooth 60FPS performance). Again, I don’t begrudge anyone that’s a huge TLOU fan and wants to go out and get this. I’ve just already experienced this game enough times that the visual upgrade isn’t enough to entice me to see it through again right now (I may pick it up when it’s relatively cheap just to have-for at whatever future date I DO decide I want to play through TLOU again).

In my opinion, remakes should be reserved for games that fell flat at launch due to the technology of the time not being powerful enough to fully realise the vision, we should be remaking the 5-6/10 cult classics not the 9-10/10 masterpieces that still hold up. What about the Resident Evil series? RE1 had flaws but was an instant classic and it had an amazing remake. And RE2/RE3 had remakes that completely altered the gameplay. I agree with you on everything except for games needing to be bad to average for them to benefit from a remake. I think good to great games can still benefit by evolving the gameplay.
Tess looking older was definitely a good change cause it now makes her look like Joel’s peer in terms of age because in the original she looked like she was in her 20’s
seeing a blind person beating the game actually reminded me a game made for blind people, a normal person can also play it and it's very good and fun too. It's called shadow of the crown ( I don remember the actual name). The whole game rely on sound and the sound design is amazing, there is stealth section, combat and a hub area where you walk around and interact based on sound(sound of a smith hamering metal for the gear shop and sounds of people talking for tavern and sounds of church bell for a church) combat is also fully sound based. Basically enemy attack from left front and right, you can block or parry based on timing. You can attack these places too with a light or heavy attack. There is also magic, and archery. The whole game is just a black screen with some particle effect, so you just listen to everything. It's a really really unique and fun game.

Either you have a deep seated issue with audio-only experiences, such as music or audiobooks, or you have some strange grudge with the blind. all they had to do was figure out a way where going prone works with the level design, and also include the TLOU2's combat mechanics (with dodging and stuff) and then it could be actually classified as a Remake rather than a remaster. it would change the gameplay just enough to warrant the hype and stuff. at least in my opinion

This should have been $30, it should have included the multiplayer, and not only the Left Behind DLC but an additional DLC starring Joel and Tommy working as hunters prior to Joel’s arrival in Boston.

I believe the 70-dollar price tag is part of the "improved gameplay". That is: because there's still some warmth in the story of the first game, the player wouldn't feel miserable enough by modern day standard. So Naughty Dog would rip you off by charging 70 dollars for an un-necessary remaster of a 9-years-old game which lies about being a remake. And by the time the player realized that he's been scammed, he'd be properly depressed, just as planned!
I think the re-done faces of Tess and Bill were done so that they actually look more like their motion capture actors :) And the fact that Tess is supposed to look like she's in her mid-40's, not early 20s 😅

Yep, remember the first Uncharted wasn't that good. It was the sequel that blew everyone away and made it one of Sony's premiere exclusives. Days Gone could've done the same.

It's a ground-up remake, that also adjusted gunplay, enemy AI, UI, sound, haptic feedback, and other things. Funny how no one bitched about the Demon's Souls remake, that make ZERO changes to ANYTHING except visuals.

To the best of my understanding the "Remake" description just comes from the fact that this is technically an entirely new game made from scratch, just meant to be identical to an older one, as opposed to how remasters are usually taking the old game on the old engine and just updating it. Really the whole argument comes down to whether or not a game is a remaster if it doesn't use any of the old game's files.
I'm not denying the remake looks good but there were definitely moments in the video where I questioned whether I was looking at the PS5 remake or the PS4 remaster.
This entire video I'm questioning that. The PS4 version looks fine and can hold up for at least until the next generation. This remaster happened way too soon. If I have to put effort to scrutinize the scene to realize it's a remaster then it's not worth a purchase.
From my point of view, if there isn't new content, new mechanics, implementation of previously cut content, or not even a reimagination of something from the original, then it's a remaster, doesn't matter if it's rebuilt from 0 in a new engine with new assets and new code, you just made the same game on better hardware and up to date graphics/technology. Plus, it doesn't even have the multiplayer, and it's still a whopping $70.

I'm glad you mentioned Max Payne being so replayable. I'd rather spend 5 hours a bit closer to heaven than 50 hours in some tedious Ubisoft slogfest. I wish you mentioned the lack of multiplayer on PS5. I have no desire to replay the campaign again, but I've put hundreds of hours in Factions online on PS4. Would be nice to have a more complete game on PS5 instead of this incomplete rehash.
It would definitely have been nice to get a Factions remake as part of this package. However, I think the answer to why they didn't can be found in the question when people ask, "why spend resources on this remake when those resources could be used to make a new game?" The multiplayer TLOU game coming out next year is apparently massive, and that's where those resources are being poured into along with at least one other project, presumably TLOU3 and a new IP.

What is "beautiful" about the remaster? There is just a higher resolution/FPS. The 50$ for the remaster was a way bigger ripoff then 70$ for a completely remodeled game.

Jak and Daxter (2001) and Uncharted (2007) deserved a remake before TLOU (2013). Unlike the remaster, the remake doesn’t even have multiplayer lol. Another thing to think about is that a lot of people were able to play TLOU Remaster because of the game being included with many PS4 consoles. TLOU Remaster has also been on the PS Plus Collection since the PS5 launched in November 2020. There isn’t a single reason that’s good enough to defend the $70 price tag of TLOU remake aka TLOU re-remaster, *especially* without multiplayer.

Unlike, say, the upcoming Resident Evil 4 remake. The original is still a phenomenal game don’t get me wrong but it is starting to show its age. Meanwhile The Last of Us was released in the late PS3/early PS4 era which means it still holds up in terms of visuals and gameplay. Both are still good games of course, but an RE4 remake makes far more sense then a TLOU remake
@@djangofett4879 The thing is, the graphical leap from console to console has become so minor that a "port" can just be the same exact thing with no graphical/performance upgrade and that's acceptable, whereas a "port" in the 90s could've meant an entirely different game depending on the technological differences of the consoles. I think it's fair to consider a port and remaster two very different things at this point. Either way I suppose it's pointless semantics though lol
When I watch comparisons of the PS4 and PS5 version, I feel that the PS4 version just looks more aesthetically pleasing. The lighting is much more vibrant with striking yellows and greens, but now Naughty Dog seems to dull and darken everything down.
I loved this review. I really wish Factions multiplayer could've also gotten this upgraded visual treatment. I'm thankful they also added the upgraded version of the DLC in this release, but, man, you're right: the story mode is a heartbreaker to play through again. without multiplayer, i just don't see this as a first day buy. i don't even have a ps5 though so... I'm out anyways, lol. i think i will wait for a sale on the pc version tho lol
The thing about the triggers being flipped was actually present in the PS4 remaster as well. You can pick which trigger set up you prefer in the controls options there, and I imagine you can in the remake too. Just throwing that out there.
It'd be "awesome" if there was a mode where the game would give you a bonus for doing entire sections of the game without using any ammo or killing anyone or anything. Also can't wait for the PC Modders to replace every Clickers with Nemesis from RE.
a ranked playthough with chapter select after the first one would be a decent way to handle it. they can spice up the gameplay with challenges while having a completely as story intended playthough.
I'll wait a few years for the price drop to between $10-20 (PC port). While they did put effort with newer engine, it's doesn't justify the $70 price tag. The original remastered still looks really good, so this remake feels quite unnecessary, Unless they were trying make it more in line with Part 2 in graphics and gameplay style. But, I don't see much difference in the gameplay between this remake and the original remastered version.
I remember prior to its initial ps3 release, devs were showing off enemy AI how they would hide on the other sides of walls (and maybe some other strategies?), but that never made it to the actual game. To your point, couldn’t more work have been put into the mechanics, if they are calling this a remake. And if the hiding behind wall mechanic or other tweaks were intentionally not included, like the devs said it wasn’t fun to play against for example, would be cool to have dev notes as behind the scenes content.

TLOU looked good when it came out and IMO has aged pretty well and the remaster that they’ve already made looked fine. The only plausible reason I can think of for ND “remaking” a game that already looks and plays well is because they’re out of ideas, but they still don’t want to put in any real work. They’ll forever be overshadowed by RE remakes and projects like FF7
Sony has been releasing a lot of ps4 games on pc lately. They probably planned to release tlou on pc, but the ps5 schmucks would've complained if they weren't given the same updated visuals. Now they get to pay $70 for it lmao
Probably one of the main reasons for this getting a green light is an investment. Make an updated version for modern consoles, and when the shitty TV show comes out and attracts a bunch of people to the IP, some will wanna play the games. Make a brand new shiny paint job to attract the guys into dropping more money for both games. I mean it's probably why they went with the PT.1 name, to make it very clear to the average viewer which your supposed to play first, and then pressure them into getting the first one in fear of missing out on stuff for PT.2.
I will definitely say that as much as I love the last of us and part 2, the mechanics in part 2, primarily with stealth and combat are immensely better. When I first booted up part 1 I got to the first combat encounter with infected and tried dodging out of the way only to be reminded that this mechanic is not included in this game. I would have liked to see them throw in some new stuff here and there especially for 70 bucks.
This latest remaster was alright, but it was really strange how, out of nowhere, in the middle of the part where Joel is trying to find a run-away Ellie, a text-to-speech version of Troy Baker’s voice came out of nowhere, and said “This reminds me of that time I mercilessly slaughtered all those zebras”, before jarringly teleporting you to a PS2 looking room, full of Zebras, and a “dead zebra” counter in the top right corner of the screen, with the game only returning you to the normal game, once you’ve mercilessly slaughtered all of the zebras, and spat on their corpses, only for the same text-to-speech Troy Baker to say “I truly hate those majestic creatures, and all who would waste their time saving the life of one, and would mercilessly kill any innocent soul who ever saved one of them zebras”, once you teleport back to the actual game. It just kinda came out of nowhere, honestly.
If I ever make my own game, I'll put something like that in, and then NEVER follow up on it. Leave the player wondering to the very end. And it'll be thanks to you.
Can we stop calling it a remake? It isn’t. It’s a remaster. The gameplay is the same, the cutscenes are the same, the dialogue is the same, the music is the same, everything is the same except for the visuals. The term "remaster" comes from music and film, where the same underlying recordings would go through the "mastering" process again with newer, higher fidelity technology. This is not a remaster. The underlying game assets are *not the same*. Calling this a remaster instead of a remake isn't some slamdunk criticism, my guy.

It's crazy, back in 2010 they remastered Perfect Dark 64 about 10 years after the game first came out, and charged 10$ for it on release. This game is just as old as the original perfect dark 64 was when they released the remaster it in 2010, but they're charging full price for this game as if it were a brand new title

To me the flashbacks are the gymnasium on grounded difficulty . I've beat it 6 times combined on PS3/4 versions. Glad you went through this ps5 version so I don't have to. The level design was really immersive and if they were to remake anything bring out a Gitaroo Man ps5 remake ☺️
Apparently, TLOU1 Remake was originally a project from Sony’s Visual Arts Service Group, one of their many support studios. Somewhere along the line, ND took and interest and took over the project. Unfortunately, they effectively forced the support studio off the project, leading some of the support studio developers to quit.
I so feel you when it comes to Max Payne and if you include the mods...oh man,i must've finished this game a 1000 times. Sames goes for the sequel. Im so happy they gonna remake these.
The original game already looked fantastic on PS3, as they squeezed a lot out of the console, finally optimized it for the Cell supercomputer lol. Which was notoriously hard to program for. Even still, games like MGS4, Demon Souls and DMC4 prove that PS3 was very capable if optimized right. The remake has a different vibe to it, and feels somewhat artificial with these graphics. Extra details over OG artstyle just isn't worth it.
I think it may be because I jumped on that generation really late (like 2012) but those games on PS3/360 always looked super crisp. It isn't until now that I have a fairly average PC and I play the games I missed out on that I realize there was still a ton of room for improvements lol
It was only 30FPS on the PS3. 30FPS always looks like total shit. 30FPS can also be headache inducing. Even though I played tons of console games in my life, I still could never get used to 30FPS. I won't even play a game anymore if it's only 30FPS.

Agreed with your points. I feel that the two main issues with this game are both the price and the false advertisement. I don't think anyone with more than 20 years of experience playing games or anyone familiar with game development will deny that this is essentially a copy paste of the skeleton of the original game (level geometry, animations and the original's voices and acting) except with new visual assets and a couple of bells and whistles. This is definitely more of a remaster than a remake. If it were a remake then why werent the actual gameplay improvemets from TLOU2 added here while they were "rebuilding the game from the ground up"? I think we all know the answer is simply because the game itself wasn't actually rebuilt from he ground up. I'd probably check this out if it was priced more fairly and actually advertised for what it is, and what it is is a game from 2013 with a new coat of paint. It also doesn't help that this kind of gameplay isn't very replayable to me and instead of taking the opportunity to make it a repayable experience, they just didn't, so I'll live without it.
When this remake was announced I instantly knew it was a cash grab. However, a small part of me was hoping that they would have added new areas and cut content to make the 70$ more deserving. It’s honestly disappointing but good to know I don’t need to buy this again.

One of the main reasons it feels like the old TLOU holds up in your head is because of how it handled its presentation. Pretty much anything that gives you a close look at the graphics like the cutscenes are all just prerendered FMV. The in-game graphics are a somewhat close approximation to those cutscenes that you think the cutscene graphics are how the game actually looks. Not to downplay the visuals of the original though. It's super impressive and squeezing everything out of the hardware, but it's still a PS3 game at the end of the day.
@@MrLachapell The point is that they redid pretty much all the visual assets. New textures, new models, new lighting, better facial animation tech, etc. TLOU was a very pretty game for its time and a graphical showpiece for the system, but calling this a "so-called" remake does a grave disservice to the amount of work that went into it. The original game IS dated. Even in its PS4 form. It's functionally no different from claiming Uncharted 4 looks no better than 3.

@@MrLachapell All the cutscenes in the OG and remastered version of TLOU are pre-rendered and look much better than their real-time in-game counterparts. In TLOU Part 1, all those cutscenes are real-time using in-game assets. So the optimal comparisons to make would be between the gameplay sections of these games as the OG cutscenes aren't representative of the actual 3d capabilities of the PS3 hardware.
4:40 it's easy to download an iso and play emulated. The reason has more to do with people that can't stand with older graphics and controls, which i disagree completely. Just learn how to play it, the original experience is like that. If not, every game will be a Third Person Shooter. And the art style will hold up forever. The first RE Remake is a better way in my opinion, it mantains the original concept while fixing some level design and updating the visual quality without changing the artistic view. Because it was made by the same guy, Shinji Mikami.
I played this game on the PS3 for the first time a few years after launch and absolutely loved it, then I played the PS4 remastered version a couple years ago a couple months before TLOUP2 launched to refresh myself on the story before playing the sequel. This game is only 9 years old, it seriously does not need a remake. I can understand why they did port it and did a graphics overhaul for the PS4, considering the game came out around the same time as the PS4 launch and they wanted to give PS4 owners the ability to play the game (given the PS4 is not backwards compatible with the PS3) but rebuilding the literal exact same game from the ground up with some graphical improvements just seems like a waste of money and resources to me personally... The game is 9 years old, not 20...
I always got the impression since i found out that they were doing a remake was that they are bringing it up to spec for the port to PC, release it on PS5 first for the timed exclusivity of it and to hopefully get more people to buy it on console before the PC release. Still think thats the overall game plan still.

@@KyleKirkpatrick123 I agree however if you look at games ported to pc like Horizon Zero dawn, God of War etc there was updated versions for pc, almost like a quality line Sony has. Yeah I'm surprised they didn't rework it into a launch title or something.. I played it through on the PS3 for my first time just recently (I wanted to get the classic experience) and it still holds up incredibly well today. Just looks a bit rough at 720p :P

Sony is charging more for this remake than they did when the game came out as an original game back in 2013. I’d rather pay full price for a brand new game/story like God of War Ragnarok. I won’t argue the masterpiece that last of us is but the asking price for this remake makes it only a recommendation for first time players or those that will come after the HBO series which is great for them but this could’ve been an EASY recommendation to EVERYONE if the asking price from Sony/Naughty Dog was $40 or $50. This remake looks awesome but improved graphics and mainly quality of life improvements don’t justify a full game price of $70.
A change I don't really like in the ps5 version is Joel's model. It's how Joel looks in part 2 but something about how Joel originally looked in part 1 seemed better to me.
I thought I was the only one who noticed that he looked older.. It’s def fascinating how each ps3, ps4 & ps5 has its own version of the game.. I own the original on ps3 and it still holds up just fine.. Even though I have the remaster on ps plus I may just pick up the remake because Ive been gaming long enough to know it’s always wise to have a backup copy of one of your favs on a different system

Financial District made you feel like a boss on grounded undetected. Some of my favourite memories of the game in that part incredible game! Not sold on this remake to old players. I still have my PS3 and am well happy with that. I will wait till this comes to PC 😂

Obviously this new version looks amazing with all the hi-res textures and modern lighting, etc. But the original still looks good. I just can't help but think Naughty Dog and Sony are feeding into the types of fans who only think about a game's quality in terms of graphics.
Console exclusivity is useless at this point, consoles are around PC grade performance. They should've released the remake on PC instead and make waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more money!

I never understood why they didn't do another "Remake" for Uncharted 1-3. 4 was a breakthrough for graphics already but even the remasters weren't near that level or as smooth gameplay wise.

I was really hoping they would include the prone mechanic from Part 2. Sure, it might've broken some of the level designs, but I thought if Naughty Dog was really doing a "remake" they would've adjusted the encounters to perfectly balance the mechanics, thus justifying the price tag. The game has to be there for the HBO show, so when people finally see it, they'll pick up the game.
It's certainly there for newer players and the die hard fans, the price is an issue that keeps being brought up and in comparisons to other remakes it can be seen as a steep price however it's clear lots of work has gone into the game and there's no question that paying the money for it if you haven't played it is certainly worth it.
I'd say if you're a new player and trying to get into TLOU (and also don't mind that there's no multiplayer mode), then this is definitely the game. For TLOU veterans, yeah this game isn't worth replaying like for a 3rd release. In both cases, I suggest that you all wait for it to go on sale if you want to play it, because the changes made really doesn't justify the $70 price tag. I wouldn't even call this a $50 game. You get improved visuals, improved AI, improved gore and improved accessibility options, but that's about the things that they put from TLOU 2 into this game. You don't get the jump button, no prone option, melee combat isn't even changed at all.
I honestly can't see much difference between the PS4 remaster and this remake. Even the original still holds up. That's a testament to ND's design team and it show how strong the vision for this game was.
I got the ps4 disc version so if I ever feel like replaying it I just boot it up on my ps5. The 2014 game still looks great, maybe not as good as the remake but it’s still visually holds up. Not to mention 60fps, for some reason the remake can’t even handle 60 at 4K.
Resident Evil 3 Remake is more of an actual remake than this. It's a graphic overhaul for 70 bucks. Unless you've never played it there's no way it is worth its asking price.
Finished this game 10 times. 4 on the PS3, and 6 on the PS4 so it's safe to say I sort of love this game. That being said, a lot of the people don't seem to understand why some of us are frustrated with this $70 release. It's the same game with the TLOU2 engine, replaced gore and slightly improved mechanics...that's it. What they could've done is added a few new items or cool little locations we couldn't explore before as a bare minimum, but they couldn't even do that. I'll definitely pick this up once I have the PS5 in about 37 years, but for now I'll stick with the remastered version on the 4. Cruise-like controls and smooth gameplay and still a great looking game.
I played TLOU on the PS3 and PS4 too. Personally I don't think it's worth getting on PS5 when it's being ported to PC too. I've played TLOU 1 and 2 dozens of times on all difficulties, and the one thing I suck at is aiming with the thumb sticks (No hate to console players, I'm on both sides lol) So getting the remake for PC would be a great way to replay the game with more precise controls
Honestly, Naughty Dog should be ashamed for their decision of remaking TLOU. It’s essentially just a graphic overhaul and nothing else. It’s not like the RE remake which actually changed the gameplay and added new parts. Plus, I feel the updated graphics make TLOU look more cartoony and less believable, especially in terms of the characters. It’s clear the Naughty Dog we knew from the original TLOU is no longer the same dev team we loved. Also, as much as TLOU is brutal and raw, it still had moments of humor and real humanity. As Skillup said in his review of TLOU 2, “the original feels like the work of a Spielberg”, in that it still touches on the good parts of humanity beneath the brutality and violence.
Im rly pissed they didnt change the combat a bit a little bit would've gone a long but i would like to reexperience this game with the update graphics, ive also noticed that they have added slight changes to the animations such as the beginning where you use ur first med kit where joel actually touches his arm the little details are worth a playthrough in my opinion but thats up to you

Modern Warfare 2 Remastered is my standard for gutted remasters. It's price on launch was enough to tolerate the removal of both spec ops and it's infamous MP. (Not being forced bundled with a new CoD game like the first remaster also helps) Tbh the enhanced crunchiness of the audio alone is worth 50% of MW2R's price tag to me.
The difference between remaster and remake is very simple. Developers usually must reduce assets quaility (for example reduce texture resolution, use low poly meshes of the original models etc.) for their games due to hardware limitations. If however developers are porting their game on much stronger platform (usually many years later on), then they can increase assets quality (they dont need to create anything from scratch, for example they simply use 4K texture resolution instead of 512x512). In remakes however (as the name implies) developers are remaking assets (create textures from scratch). TLOU1 is not really a full remake, because Naughty(America)Dog has used some of the old assets, for example old audio files (original voice acting). They however totally rebuilded assets that made up the graphics, so if you arnt nitpicky, then I think you can still call TLOU part 1 a remake. Original voice acting was superb, so I can understand why they used these original files again. I think people are confused about remakes, because certain developers go the extra mile with their remakes, for example what capcom did with RE2. Not only they created assets from scratch, but they also changed levels layout and used different game mechanics. What capcom did with RE2 should be called reimagination, because this is was no longer original game just with better graphics (remaster or remake), but totally different game.
For me a reimagination would be something like FF7, bc they changed the story and at that point it becomes a different game. You can change the gameplay but if the story is the same in general it's still a remake. I mean, just remaking textures and other assets would not be a full remake. A game is not only composed of it's technical aspects, but also it's gameplay loops and narrative. If you're only remaking half of it while leaving stuff like level design, combat, menu's, etc. the same you are not remaking everything, alas it's not a full remake. If you're only remaking it's visual and audio parts it's just a remaster.
@@DZ-rt7hb Like I have said TLOU1 isnt really a full remake, because they are using old audio files, or even combat (code) mechanics like you have noticed. ND however replaced pretty much all of the assets that made the visuals (game graphics), so IMO it isnt fair to call it a remaster either. PS4 port was a remaster, because they were only using original assets from the original game, and overall PS4 version still looked like PS3 game, just running at higher resolution and framerate. When I was playing PS4 version I thought like playing the same game from PS3 (It was like comparing the same game on PC, just with diffetent settings). That's not the case with TLOU Part 1, because with such big changes to the visuals it no longer looks like PS3 game. The difference between this game (PS5 version) and the PS4 remaster is staggering and remember the visuals have a big impact on getting absorbed into the world, story, and characters. Good graphics can elevate an already "Game of the Gen" type experience from PS3 to something that still holds up to this day and is very compelling.
Yeah, in the Last of Us show they should include Abby and really show how she golfed Joel because that what's the fans really love about the game. Abby should have flashback of it multiple times to remind us how evil Joel is.

As someone that have not played the original game, I enjoyed this game a ton (on PC). Ran through it in like 2-3 days, enjoyed the encounters and simplified stealth. Story was great, visuals were great, pacing worked for me as well. Appreciated that it wasn't a 60 hour campaign as well. Although I have purchased it on a deep discount, with a coupon.

For me personally, the price tag would have been worth it if they had gone the extra mile and upgraded the gameplay with some mechanics from last of us 2, namely the dodge mechanic. The prone I could have done without, since stealth is already pretty decent, but the melee combat and combat in general had much more depth in part 2 which made it so much more fun, so I was really hoping to see that here.
I don’t know. I keep seeing what Microsoft is doing with their performance boost and series x updates for older titles and it tends to look on par fidelity wise and slightly faster frame rates then what was done in this title.
I mean hell, gear 3 and 4 look way sharper. Even the update they made to the gears one ultimate edition from 2014-2015 looks crazy good and these are free updates.

I'm not sure if that really checks out for a lot of the recent indie games. Seems to me like the low poly, pixelated graphics itself has became an aesthetics to nostalgia-bait people into buying them for the look, while the gameplay is barebone, ankle-deep. I dont think any generalization really fully checks out on either end of the specturm

Okay, so it’s clear that they put considerable effort into the visuals and such, but I’m not so sure it’s as greatly appreciated as it would’ve been had they chosen to remake a game that DOESN’T hold up when viewed through the modern lens (and I don’t care what anyone says but TLOU Remastered on the PS4 still holds up perfectly AND maintains smooth 60FPS performance).
Again, I don’t begrudge anyone that’s a huge TLOU fan and wants to go out and get this. I’ve just already experienced this game enough times that the visual upgrade isn’t enough to entice me to see it through again right now (I may pick it up when it’s relatively cheap just to have-for at whatever future date I DO decide I want to play through TLOU again).

In my opinion, remakes should be reserved for games that fell flat at launch due to the technology of the time not being powerful enough to fully realise the vision, we should be remaking the 5-6/10 cult classics not the 9-10/10 masterpieces that still hold up.

What about the Resident Evil series? RE1 had flaws but was an instant classic and it had an amazing remake. And RE2/RE3 had remakes that completely altered the gameplay. I agree with you on everything except for games needing to be bad to average for them to benefit from a remake. I think good to great games can still benefit by evolving the gameplay.
Tess looking older was definitely a good change cause it now makes her look like Joel’s peer in terms of age because in the original she looked like she was in her 20’s
seeing a blind person beating the game actually reminded me a game made for blind people, a normal person can also play it and it's very good and fun too. It's called shadow of the crown ( I don remember the actual name). The whole game rely on sound and the sound design is amazing, there is stealth section, combat and a hub area where you walk around and interact based on sound(sound of a smith hamering metal for the gear shop and sounds of people talking for tavern and sounds of church bell for a church) combat is also fully sound based. Basically enemy attack from left front and right, you can block or parry based on timing. You can attack these places too with a light or heavy attack. There is also magic, and archery. The whole game is just a black screen with some particle effect, so you just listen to everything. It's a really really unique and fun game.
That sounds pretty cool. I'm really happy how gaming is putting an emphasis on accessibility these days.

Yeah, including prone will definitely bump up the value of the game. I actually think though the level design will definitely require some changes to have this. But nevertheless, even so, I'd say $50-60 tops.
Dodge should be optional thing that you can turn off and on cause it made Part II too easy, even on Survivor or Grounded.

If they had announced that this remake contained ANY KIND OF ADDITIONAL STORY CHAPTER, I would’ve been like, “well, DAMN. Guess I’m buying TLOU FOR A THIRD TIME.”
But the moment it became apparent that this was like 99% just an audiovisual upgrade (and that they weren’t even going to try and implant some of the improved combat mechanics of TLOU Part II into it), I was like, “nevermind, I’m good.”

I believe the 70-dollar price tag is part of the "improved gameplay".
That is: because there's still some warmth in the story of the first game, the player wouldn't feel miserable enough by modern day standard. So Naughty Dog would rip you off by charging 70 dollars for an un-necessary remaster of a 9-years-old game which lies about being a remake. And by the time the player realized that he's been scammed, he'd be properly depressed, just as planned!
Just in time for that person to buy the sequel and promptly blow their brains out from the depression.

I heard that a Days Gone sequel was shelved in favor of the Last of Us remake. Days Gone might not be the best game ever, but it might have some potential if a sequel comes out.
Yep, remember the first Uncharted wasn't that good. It was the sequel that blew everyone away and made it one of Sony's premiere exclusives. Days Gone could've done the same.
It's unconnected. Days Gone's developers, Bend Studio, pitched the sequel in 2019 and failed to get it greenlit. Work on the remake started in secret before Last of Us 2 finished production through Visual Arts Service Group's founder Michael Mumbauer.

To the best of my understanding the "Remake" description just comes from the fact that this is technically an entirely new game made from scratch, just meant to be identical to an older one, as opposed to how remasters are usually taking the old game on the old engine and just updating it.
Really the whole argument comes down to whether or not a game is a remaster if it doesn't use any of the old game's files.
I'm not denying the remake looks good but there were definitely moments in the video where I questioned whether I was looking at the PS5 remake or the PS4 remaster.

This entire video I'm questioning that. The PS4 version looks fine and can hold up for at least until the next generation. This remaster happened way too soon. If I have to put effort to scrutinize the scene to realize it's a remaster then it's not worth a purchase.

From my point of view, if there isn't new content, new mechanics, implementation of previously cut content, or not even a reimagination of something from the original, then it's a remaster, doesn't matter if it's rebuilt from 0 in a new engine with new assets and new code, you just made the same game on better hardware and up to date graphics/technology. Plus, it doesn't even have the multiplayer, and it's still a whopping $70.

I wish you mentioned the lack of multiplayer on PS5. I have no desire to replay the campaign again, but I've put hundreds of hours in Factions online on PS4. Would be nice to have a more complete game on PS5 instead of this incomplete rehash.

It would definitely have been nice to get a Factions remake as part of this package. However, I think the answer to why they didn't can be found in the question when people ask, "why spend resources on this remake when those resources could be used to make a new game?" The multiplayer TLOU game coming out next year is apparently massive, and that's where those resources are being poured into along with at least one other project, presumably TLOU3 and a new IP.

Jak and Daxter (2001) and Uncharted (2007) deserved a remake before TLOU (2013). Unlike the remaster, the remake doesn’t even have multiplayer lol. Another thing to think about is that a lot of people were able to play TLOU Remaster because of the game being included with many PS4 consoles. TLOU Remaster has also been on the PS Plus Collection since the PS5 launched in November 2020. There isn’t a single reason that’s good enough to defend the $70 price tag of TLOU remake aka TLOU re-remaster, *especially* without multiplayer.

Unlike, say, the upcoming Resident Evil 4 remake. The original is still a phenomenal game don’t get me wrong but it is starting to show its age. Meanwhile The Last of Us was released in the late PS3/early PS4 era which means it still holds up in terms of visuals and gameplay.
Both are still good games of course, but an RE4 remake makes far more sense then a TLOU remake
@@djangofett4879 The thing is, the graphical leap from console to console has become so minor that a "port" can just be the same exact thing with no graphical/performance upgrade and that's acceptable, whereas a "port" in the 90s could've meant an entirely different game depending on the technological differences of the consoles. When I watch comparisons of the PS4 and PS5 version, I feel that the PS4 version just looks more aesthetically pleasing. The lighting is much more vibrant with striking yellows and greens, but now Naughty Dog seems to dull and darken everything down.
Yeah I noticed that with Uncharted 4 as well, the previous games were so bright and colourful and artistically.

I loved this review. I really wish Factions multiplayer could've also gotten this upgraded visual treatment. I'm thankful they also added the upgraded version of the DLC in this release, but, man, you're right: the story mode is a heartbreaker to play through again. without multiplayer, i just don't see this as a first day buy. i don't even have a ps5 though so... I'm out anyways, lol.

The thing about the triggers being flipped was actually present in the PS4 remaster as well. You can pick which trigger set up you prefer in the controls options there, and I imagine you can in the remake too. Just throwing that out there.
It'd be "awesome" if there was a mode where the game would give you a bonus for doing entire sections of the game without using any ammo or killing anyone or anything. Also can't wait for the PC Modders to replace every Clickers with Nemesis from RE.
a ranked playthough with chapter select after the first one would be a decent way to handle it. they can spice up the gameplay with challenges while having a completely as story intended playthough.

I'll wait a few years for the price drop to between $10-20 (PC port). While they did put effort with newer engine, it's doesn't justify the $70 price tag. The original remastered still looks really good, so this remake feels quite unnecessary, Unless they were trying make it more in line with Part 2 in graphics and gameplay style. But, I don't see much difference in the gameplay between this remake and the original remastered version.
I remember prior to its initial ps3 release, devs were showing off enemy AI how they would hide on the other sides of walls (and maybe some other strategies?), but that never made it to the actual game.
To your point, couldn’t more work have been put into the mechanics, if they are calling this a remake.
And if the hiding behind wall mechanic or other tweaks were intentionally not included, like the devs said it wasn’t fun to play against for example, would be cool to have dev notes as behind the scenes content.

TLOU looked good when it came out and IMO has aged pretty well and the remaster that they’ve already made looked fine. The only plausible reason I can think of for ND “remaking” a game that already looks and plays well is because they’re out of ideas, but they still don’t want to put in any real work. They’ll forever be overshadowed by RE remakes and projects like FF7

Probably one of the main reasons for this getting a green light is an investment. Make an updated version for modern consoles, and when the shitty TV show comes out and attracts a bunch of people to the IP, some will wanna play the games. Make a brand new shiny paint job to attract the guys into dropping more money for both games. I mean it's probably why they went with the PT.1 name, to make it very clear to the average viewer which your supposed to play first, and then pressure them into getting the first one in fear of missing out on stuff for PT.2.

I will definitely say that as much as I love the last of us and part 2, the mechanics in part 2, primarily with stealth and combat are immensely better. When I first booted up part 1 I got to the first combat encounter with infected and tried dodging out of the way only to be reminded that this mechanic is not included in this game. I would have liked to see them throw in some new stuff here and there especially for 70 bucks.

This latest remaster was alright, but it was really strange how, out of nowhere, in the middle of the part where Joel is trying to find a run-away Ellie, a text-to-speech version of Troy Baker’s voice came out of nowhere, and said “This reminds me of that time I mercilessly slaughtered all those zebras”, before jarringly teleporting you to a PS2 looking room, full of Zebras, and a “dead zebra” counter in the top right corner of the screen, with the game only returning you to the normal game, once you’ve mercilessly slaughtered all of the zebras, and spat on their corpses, only for the same text-to-speech Troy Baker to say “I truly hate those majestic creatures, and all who would waste their time saving the life of one, and would mercilessly kill any innocent soul who ever saved one of them zebras”, once you teleport back to the actual game.

It's crazy, back in 2010 they remastered Perfect Dark 64 about 10 years after the game first came out, and charged 10$ for it on release. This game is just as old as the original perfect dark 64 was when they released the remaster it in 2010, but they're charging full price for this game as if it were a brand new title

To me the flashbacks are the gymnasium on grounded difficulty . I've beat it 6 times combined on PS3/4 versions. Glad you went through this ps5 version so I don't have to. The level design was really immersive and if they were to remake anything bring out a Gitaroo Man ps5 remake ☺️

Apparently, TLOU1 Remake was originally a project from Sony’s Visual Arts Service Group, one of their many support studios. Somewhere along the line, ND took and interest and took over the project. Unfortunately, they effectively forced the support studio off the project, leading some of the support studio developers to quit.

The original game already looked fantastic on PS3, as they squeezed a lot out of the console, finally optimized it for the Cell supercomputer lol. Which was notoriously hard to program for.
Even still, games like MGS4, Demon Souls and DMC4 prove that PS3 was very capable if optimized right.
The remake has a different vibe to it, and feels somewhat artificial with these graphics. Extra details over OG artstyle just isn't worth it.
I think it may be because I jumped on that generation really late (like 2012) but those games on PS3/360 always looked super crisp. It isn't until now that I have a fairly average PC and I play the games I missed out on that I realize there was still a ton of room for improvements lol
It was only 30FPS on the PS3. 30FPS always looks like total shit. 30FPS can also be headache inducing. Even though I played tons of console games in my life, I still could never get used to 30FPS. I won't even play a game anymore if it's only 30FPS.

Agreed with your points. I feel that the two main issues with this game are both the price and the false advertisement. I don't think anyone with more than 20 years of experience playing games or anyone familiar with game development will deny that this is essentially a copy paste of the skeleton of the original game (level geometry, animations and the original's voices and acting) except with new visual assets and a couple of bells and whistles. This is definitely more of a remaster than a remake. If it were a remake then why werent the actual gameplay improvemets from TLOU2 added here while they were "rebuilding the game from the ground up"? I think we all know the answer is simply because the game itself wasn't actually rebuilt from he ground up.
I'd probably check this out if it was priced more fairly and actually advertised for what it is, and what it is is a game from 2013 with a new coat of paint. It also doesn't help that this kind of gameplay isn't very replayable to me and instead of taking the opportunity to make it a repayable experience, they just didn't, so I'll live without it.

One of the main reasons it feels like the old TLOU holds up in your head is because of how it handled its presentation.
Pretty much anything that gives you a close look at the graphics like the cutscenes are all just prerendered FMV. The in-game graphics are a somewhat close approximation to those cutscenes that you think the cutscene graphics are how the game actually looks.
Not to downplay the visuals of the original though. It's super impressive and squeezing everything out of the hardware, but it's still a PS3 game at the end of the day.

TLOU was a very pretty game for its time and a graphical showpiece for the system, but calling this a "so-called" remake does a grave disservice to the amount of work that went into it.
The original game IS dated. Even in its PS4 form. It's functionally no different from claiming Uncharted 4 looks no better than 3.

@@MrLachapell All the cutscenes in the OG and remastered version of TLOU are pre-rendered and look much better than their real-time in-game counterparts. In TLOU Part 1, all those cutscenes are real-time using in-game assets. So the optimal comparisons to make would be between the gameplay sections of these games as the OG cutscenes aren't representative of the actual 3d capabilities of the PS3 hardware.

The reason has more to do with people that can't stand with older graphics and controls, which i disagree completely. Just learn how to play it, the original experience is like that. If not, every game will be a Third Person Shooter.

The first RE Remake is a better way in my opinion, it mantains the original concept while fixing some level design and updating the visual quality without changing the artistic view.

I played this game on the PS3 for the first time a few years after launch and absolutely loved it, then I played the PS4 remastered version a couple years ago a couple months before TLOUP2 launched to refresh myself on the story before playing the sequel. This game is only 9 years old, it seriously does not need a remake. I can understand why they did port it and did a graphics overhaul for the PS4, considering the game came out around the same time as the PS4 launch and they wanted to give PS4 owners the ability to play the game (given the PS4 is not backwards compatible with the PS3) but rebuilding the literal exact same game from the ground up with some graphical improvements just seems like a waste of money and resources to me personally... The game is 9 years old, not 20...
I always got the impression since i found out that they were doing a remake was that they are bringing it up to spec for the port to PC, release it on PS5 first for the timed exclusivity of it and to hopefully get more people to buy it on console before the PC release. Still think thats the overall game plan still.

I won’t argue the masterpiece that last of us is but the asking price for this remake makes it only a recommendation for first time players or those that will come after the HBO series which is great for them but this could’ve been an EASY recommendation to EVERYONE if the asking price from Sony/Naughty Dog was $40 or $50. This remake looks awesome but improved graphics and mainly quality of life improvements don’t justify a full game price of $70.
A change I don't really like in the ps5 version is Joel's model. It's how Joel looks in part 2 but something about how Joel originally looked in part 1 seemed better to me.
I thought I was the only one who noticed that he looked older.. It’s def fascinating how each ps3, ps4 & ps5 has its own version of the game.. I own the original on ps3 and it still holds up just fine.. Even though I have the remaster on ps plus I may just pick up the remake because Ive been gaming long enough to know it’s always wise to have a backup copy of one of your favs on a different system

Obviously this new version looks amazing with all the hi-res textures and modern lighting, etc. But the original still looks good. I just can't help but think Naughty Dog and Sony are feeding into the types of fans who only think about a game's quality in terms of graphics.
Console exclusivity is useless at this point, consoles are around PC grade performance. They should've released the remake on PC instead and make waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more money!

The original still looks good? Lmfao no, it’s look outdated actually. The only good about this game is pre rendered cutscenes. Even zombie animations and gore system look wayyy worse than Left 4 Dead, a game that was released 5 years before of this game.

I never understood why they didn't do another "Remake" for Uncharted 1-3. 4 was a breakthrough for graphics already but even the remasters weren't near that level or as smooth gameplay wise.

I was really hoping they would include the prone mechanic from Part 2. Sure, it might've broken some of the level designs, but I thought if Naughty Dog was really doing a "remake" they would've adjusted the encounters to perfectly balance the mechanics, thus justifying the price tag. The game has to be there for the HBO show, so when people finally see it, they'll pick up the game.
It's certainly there for newer players and the die hard fans, the price is an issue that keeps being brought up and in comparisons to other remakes it can be seen as a steep price however it's clear lots of work has gone into the game and there's no question that paying the money for it if you haven't played it is certainly worth it.

I'd say if you're a new player and trying to get into TLOU (and also don't mind that there's no multiplayer mode), then this is definitely the game. For TLOU veterans, yeah this game isn't worth replaying like for a 3rd release. In both cases, I suggest that you all wait for it to go on sale if you want to play it, because the changes made really doesn't justify the $70 price tag. I wouldn't even call this a $50 game.
You get improved visuals, improved AI, improved gore and improved accessibility options, but that's about the things that they put from TLOU 2 into this game. You don't get the jump button, no prone option, melee combat isn't even changed at all.

I honestly can't see much difference between the PS4 remaster and this remake.
Even the original still holds up. That's a testament to ND's design team and it show how strong the vision for this game was.

I got the ps4 disc version so if I ever feel like replaying it I just boot it up on my ps5. The 2014 game still looks great, maybe not as good as the remake but it’s still visually holds up. Not to mention 60fps, for some reason the remake can’t even handle 60 at 4K.
Resident Evil 3 Remake is more of an actual remake than this. It's a graphic overhaul for 70 bucks. Unless you've never played it there's no way it is worth its asking price.

Finished this game 10 times. 4 on the PS3, and 6 on the PS4 so it's safe to say I sort of love this game.
That being said, a lot of the people don't seem to understand why some of us are frustrated with this $70 release. It's the same game with the TLOU2 engine, replaced gore and slightly improved mechanics...that's it. What they could've done is added a few new items or cool little locations we couldn't explore before as a bare minimum, but they couldn't even do that.
I'll definitely pick this up once I have the PS5 in about 37 years, but for now I'll stick with the remastered version on the 4. Cruise-like controls and smooth gameplay and still a great looking game.
I played TLOU on the PS3 and PS4 too. Personally I don't think it's worth getting on PS5 when it's being ported to PC too. I've played TLOU 1 and 2 dozens of times on all difficulties, and the one thing I suck at is aiming with the thumb sticks (No hate to console players, I'm on both sides lol) So getting the remake for PC would be a great way to replay the game with more precise controls
Honestly, Naughty Dog should be ashamed for their decision of remaking TLOU. It’s essentially just a graphic overhaul and nothing else. It’s not like the RE remake which actually changed the gameplay and added new parts. Plus, I feel the updated graphics make TLOU look more cartoony and less believable, especially in terms of the characters. It’s clear the Naughty Dog we knew from the original TLOU is no longer the same dev team we loved.
Also, as much as TLOU is brutal and raw, it still had moments of humor and real humanity. As Skillup said in his review of TLOU 2, “the original feels like the work of a Spielberg”, in that it still touches on the good parts of humanity beneath the brutality and violence.

Im rly pissed they didnt change the combat a bit a little bit would've gone a long but i would like to reexperience this game with the update graphics, ive also noticed that they have added slight changes to the animations such as the beginning where you use ur first med kit where joel actually touches his arm the little details are worth a playthrough in my opinion but thats up to you

Modern Warfare 2 Remastered is my standard for gutted remasters. It's price on launch was enough to tolerate the removal of both spec ops and it's infamous MP. (Not being forced bundled with a new CoD game like the first remaster also helps) Tbh the enhanced crunchiness of the audio alone is worth 50% of MW2R's price tag to me.
The difference between remaster and remake is very simple. Developers usually must reduce assets quaility (for example reduce texture resolution, use low poly meshes of the original models etc.) for their games due to hardware limitations. If however developers are porting their game on much stronger platform (usually many years later on), then they can increase assets quality (they dont need to create anything from scratch, for example they simply use 4K texture resolution instead of 512x512). In remakes however (as the name implies) developers are remaking assets (create textures from scratch).
TLOU1 is not really a full remake, because Naughty(America)Dog has used some of the old assets, for example old audio files (original voice acting). They however totally rebuilded assets that made up the graphics, so if you arnt nitpicky, then I think you can still call TLOU part 1 a remake. Original voice acting was superb, so I can understand why they used these original files again.
I think people are confused about remakes, because certain developers go the extra mile with their remakes, for example what capcom did with RE2. Not only they created assets from scratch, but they also changed levels layout and used different game mechanics. What capcom did with RE2 should be called reimagination, because this is was no longer original game just with better graphics (remaster or remake), but totally different game.
For me a reimagination would be something like FF7, bc they changed the story and at that point it becomes a different game. You can change the gameplay but if the story is the same in general it's still a remake.
I mean, just remaking textures and other assets would not be a full remake. A game is not only composed of it's technical aspects, but also it's gameplay loops and narrative. If you're only remaking half of it while leaving stuff like level design, combat, menu's, etc. the same you are not remaking everything, alas it's not a full remake. If you're only remaking it's visual and audio parts it's just a remaster.
@@DZ-rt7hb Like I have said TLOU1 isnt really a full remake, because they are using old audio files, or even combat (code) mechanics like you have noticed. ND however replaced pretty much all of the assets that made the visuals (game graphics), so IMO it isnt fair to call it a remaster either.
PS4 port was a remaster, because they were only using original assets from the original game, and overall PS4 version still looked like PS3 game, just running at higher resolution and framerate. When I was playing PS4 version I thought like playing the same game from PS3 (It was like comparing the same game on PC, just with diffetent settings).
That's not the case with TLOU Part 1, because with such big changes to the visuals it no longer looks like PS3 game. The difference between this game (PS5 version) and the PS4 remaster is staggering and remember the visuals have a big impact on getting absorbed into the world, story, and characters. Good graphics can elevate an already "Game of the Gen" type experience from PS3 to something that still holds up to this day and is very compelling.
Yeah, in the Last of Us show they should include Abby and really show how she golfed Joel because that what's the fans really love about the game. Abby should have flashback of it multiple times to remind us how evil Joel is.

I am SO glad they remade TLOU1 because after completing TLOU2 I have such fond memories of JOEL dying, Ellie getting her fingers mauled off and Abby getting f*cked in the a$$!

I don‘t understand the hate train for the remake. I get you guys I hate NaughtyDog more than anyone else, but why is this even controversial? My guys it‘s COMING TO PC, is it worth playing? I bet a good portion of the people complaining are people who bought 3 generations worth of Skyrim and GTA V.
As someone that have not played the original game, I enjoyed this game a ton (on PC). Ran through it in like 2-3 days, enjoyed the encounters and simplified stealth. Story was great, visuals were great, pacing worked for me as well. Appreciated that it wasn't a 60 hour campaign as well. Although I have purchased it on a deep discount, with a coupon.
