Levi Stubbs... probably the greatest Commanding Male voice at Motown, no one wails like him... try "Baby I Need Your Lovin" and "Ain't No Woman Like The One I've Got" by The Four Tops.. you won't be disappointed.
I used to have a Bernadette. Dudes were always lurking, trying to undercut me, fake friends. Would get with your girl in a minute. This used to be my anthem. I loved her. Course, she gone now. Long gone. But this was the song I used to listen to when we were together. Things fell apart. But when we were together, I would have died for her.
"Reach Out, I'll Be There" is probably the other Four Tops song you're remembering. The mix reminds me of how great the song sounded on old AM radios. They mixed "Ain't No Woman (Like The One I've Got)" for FM and it sounds great too.
Happy Thanksgiving. Great song. Thank you for sharing Angela. If you haven't seen the movie, Standing in the Shadows of Motown yet, you really need to do so. It's the back story of the Funk Brothers who were the sound on all of the Motown songs. Alan "Dr. Licks" Slutsky, the driving force behind this story is a friend of mine and did a phenominal job producing this movie. Cheers from a Connecticut musician (drummer), Dave.
Levi Stubbs is a fantastic singer! Got to see the 4 Tops live at of all places Disneyland Gradnight..1969! If like his voice ..Watch , the Sci-fi horror comedy , The Little Shop of Horrors.!..The 1986 musical version! Levi is the acting and phenomenal singing voice , of the main antagonist monster flower Audry II..Sounds bizarre, but is an hilarious, fun musical, with great retro sound late 1950-to early 60s singing.Especially the girl group singer, with some familiar faces you'll recognize! The main reluctant hero is Seymour..played by Rick Moranis , his love interest Audry , who has an amazing singing voice..Steve Martin is hilarious, there's a minor performance by Bill Murray also hilarious! Great music and fun..You will be entertained..The theatrical version...!
I believe Martha Reeves and the Vandellas and perhaps a few of the other female artists were backing him up.. Motown is the best.. please more videos of ms Diana Ross
Prooelled by the soulful voice of Levi Stubbs, The Four Tops are one of Motown's greatest and most successful acts. Some of their other classics include: "Reach Our, I'll Be There", "Can't Help Myself", "It's The Same Old Song", "Standing In The Shadows Of Love", "When She Was My Girl", "Ask The Lonely", "Ain't No Woman"., "Baby I Need Your Loving".
You clearly love this music -- you will want to know who made it. The musicians are the uncredited Motown house band, the Funk Brothers. They played on more #1 records than the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Beach Boys combined. The bassist is James Jamerson, at the peak of his powers. Bassists still revere him. Five months ago, you reviewed Joan Osborne performing "What Becomes Of the Broken Hearted", backed by the surviving Funk Brothers. It was a clip from the documentary "Standing in the Shadows of Motown", commemorating those great musicians. I hope you find time to watch the whole movie.
Great reaction Angela, especially the look on your face when the vocals came back in! LOL Hey you gotta check out their songs "Keeper of the Castle" and "Are You Man Enough?" some of their best stuff. Thanks!
The 4 tops and Stubb's boomer of a voice plus Motown's funk brothers equals a big chart hit. 3:16 Ha-ha -he jumped scared ya..Would've thought that was your name! (We call that a false stop in the recording biz) And Happy Thanksgiving, beautiful!
Four Tops have many great songs. Levi Stubbs powerful vocals. Another vocal group with a powerful lead singer you might like is The Dells. Their 1968 studio version of Wear It On Our Face is a real good one.
Oh YEAH!!! My favorite song of theirs and one of my favorite R&B songs ever. The late great Levi Stubbs really brings the emotion on this one with his lead vocal!
Four tops had so many wonderful great hits baby i need you're lovin sugar pie honey bunch ain't no woman like the one i got and so many more to me they will always be the heart and soul of motown!!!
Brought back childhood memories of my brother whenever there was a long pause my brother ended it with Levi singing Bernadette!!! We in our 70s now!! Crazy!! Love the tops tho!!
I love The Four Tops.. my favorite songs are When she was my girl, Standing in the Shadows of Love, Still Waters Run Deep..in fact I love the entire catalog
Loved em since 1964. One of the greatest singing groups. I love their songs from beginning to end. Angela they've got so many great songs. Try "Still Waters, Love". Just beautiful ° or try ",reach out:
One of the first concerts I ever attended.. 1966… They were great live. PS Levi Stubbs is the voice of the plant in Little Shop Of Horrors … Feed Me Seymour 😂
Levi Stubbs was in a class of elite singers. Him and maybe 5 others made up this group. Marvin Gaye, David Ruffin, Wilson Pickett, Teddy Pendergrass and James Brown. No one could come close to their voice. I am sure there are others, but these are my favorites.
Caught by the false ending 😂. Always been a Tops fan since the first time I heard them. Yes, I'll Be There, Standing in the Shadows of Love, are also 4 Tops hits. Baritone, Levi Stubbs had such an iconic voice.
Im only 44 but got to see the tops several times in Vegas when i was on high school. Levi Stubbs easily one of my favorite singers. I love Motown in general
Hi Ms. D., A great group.. I have always been surprised that Mr. Levi Stubbs did not blow out his voice; he seems to be straining all of the time.. ♠Mr.G..
Yes, the same group did Reach Out (I'll Be There). Great music came out of the Motown Days. Everyone has to live in their own time, but I think you would have loved growing up in the Motown era.
One of my favorite songs and groups of all time. There was a kind of rivalry between the Four Tops and the Temptations. One of the members of the Temptations said there was no way the Four Tops even came close to them, except for Levi Stubbs. He said, "Levi Stubbs is no joke!" I liked both groups, but probably the Four Tops more.
A great song…. I wish we could send today’s music back to the 1960’s and 1970’s and take ALL the music from 1960-1970’s for us to enjoy in 2023-24 😂❤️🙏🏻☮️✌🏼
Levi Jr. is a regular customer that I see and serve weekly. Loving his dad and the Four Tops for all my life, I'm honored to get to know this sweet, humble man. This music is timeless!
I was a little girl when this song came out. We lived in Cleveland, and I thank God my family listened to and followed all kinds of music. In my naïveté, I thought these guys were singing to my real-life friend, Bernadette.
Hey Angela, love your videos. There are thousands of wonderful songs you have yet to discover. There is a song from Bruce Sprinsteen called Nebraska , it was done in 1982 and it is based on a true story. Please beware, it is not a happy feel good song.
I'd like to echo what someone else said above: Levi Stubbs was one of *the* greatest, most underrated singers of his time. And James Jamerson's bass playing on this is extraordinary even by his standards.
One of the great Motown bands, I love their lead singer Levi Stubbs. This is a good one and I think my favourite is 'Reach out I'll be there'-Colin Ward
I know the song, so I knew when that long Bernadette pause came, I knew you would think the song was over, I couldn't wait to see your reaction to that pause. Perfect reaction.
Four Tops are a great group .That was funny when you realized they were not finished !Thank you Angela!
That was the voice of the great Levi Stubbs...amazing singer..yes it was the Four Tops who sang I'll be there..🇬🇧💞✝️🙏👍👏🎵🎼
I imagine the lord painted the sky with Levi's voice.
My favorite Four Tops song. And yes it's in the blame key as Reach Out, I'll Be There by them.
Levi Stubbs... probably the greatest Commanding Male voice at Motown, no one wails like him... try "Baby I Need Your Lovin" and "Ain't No Woman Like The One I've Got" by The Four Tops.. you won't be disappointed.

Loved the surprise ending, the fadeout then boom 🙂which for me is the best part of the song, very passionate.
"Reach Out, I'll Be There" is probably the other Four Tops song you're remembering. The mix reminds me of how great the song sounded on old AM radios. They mixed "Ain't No Woman (Like The One I've Got)" for FM and it sounds great too.
that James Jamersom bass line

Awesome song!! Your reaction was great!! 😅
The LEGENDARY Iconic Four Tops
So thankful I grew up in Motown-this was on the radio so so often. Love it!
Great song. I now see where the Big Bang theory got their song from. Its not the same song, but they definitely used this as a template.

😂Sistah, What happened to your SOUL? you have to work on your rhythm!
Prooelled by the soulful voice of Levi Stubbs, The Four Tops are one of Motown's greatest and most successful acts.

Gotcha on that false ending, didn’t he! Another great Motown hit with the great voice of Levi Stubbs and the 4 tops!
You clearly love this music -- you will want to know who made it.

The Tops same line-up from 1953-1997. Levi Stubbs . one of the most under rated Motown voices.
Never underrated 😮.
Great reaction Angela, especially the look on your face when the vocals came back in! LOL Hey you gotta check out their songs "Keeper of the Castle" and "Are You Man Enough?" some of their best stuff. Thanks!
The late Great James Jamerson tore that bass up
Levi Stubbs was also the voice of the predatory plant in Little Shop Of Horrors. He CAN be scary. "Feed me, Seymour!"
Levi Stubbs was married to his wife, Clineice, for 48 years!
I’m a 70 year old white guy who drew up with this type music. Absolutely think some of the best music ever produced!
Supremes.. Love Child
Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrel.. Ain't no mountain high enough
GRAMPS71 YEAR OLD DJ⚡⚡ SAYS YOU NEED 🎧🎧🎧HEAD PHONES SEIRD WOW
r&b has never been better. RIP James Jamerson
Check out "Ask the Lonely" live in Paris France.
One of my fav Motown songs. Love the background harmonies and of course the legendary James Jamerson on bass. Love your reviews btw..
You had two camps in the 60's heading into the 70's. Temptations or Four Tops. I leaned to the Tops.
I was in both camps!
It's incredible how many fantastic songs Holland-Dozier-Holland wrote.
You’re right, they don’t get enough credit, I think the song writers are the heart and soul of the music business.
Four Tops have many great songs. Levi Stubbs powerful vocals. Another vocal group with a powerful lead singer you might like is The Dells. Their 1968 studio version of Wear It On Our Face is a real good one.
1960’s Motown is usually a guaranteed 👍🏾
Love that song
Timeless Motown classic….
You may also want to review Right on brother and Midnight flower.
Absolutely!! 🎤🎤🎤🎤

Eddie Kendricks sung background for Duke Fakir who was ill
I never heard that part as hilarious but it is.
It’s like, is he gone?
Then he sticks his head in the window one last time

Some of the best bass work you will ever hear! Great song!

Big one and one of their best. Classic Motown Era
James Jamerson’s bass really drives this great song!!!
The ladies, you’re hearing in the background are the Andantes. They are on more than 20,000 Motown recording sessions. This song was done in one take.
One of my favorite songs and groups of all time. There was a kind of rivalry between the Four Tops and the Temptations. One of the members of the Temptations said there was no way the Four Tops even came close to them, except for Levi Stubbs. He said, "Levi Stubbs is no joke!" Love Motown love the Four Tops from England.
Great song by a great group. Also, please react to the Carpenters first hit song, " Ticket to ride".
(A late comment.)
Good reaction! ✌️😎
The end of that song always gets a first time listener 😂..
I loved it when you thought the song was over and that little break (caesura) came and then you got blasted with "Bernadette". I sure do love Motown!
I never realised this song had a jump scare in it before.
Classic Motown. "The Hesitation" was how we were dancing back then. We'd suddenly freeze for a few moments then start again.
Thanks for the feel good Motown 😊
😂

I knew you were gonna get caught on that late "Bernadette."
Happy Thanksgiving 😊
