The Four Tops were big in the Motown Sound. Through the 60's through the mid 90's they would appear with The Temptations a lot, but the line up of The Temptations was always changing. The Four Tops didn't have a line up change for 44 years. Saw them twice. "I Can't Help Myself", and "It's The Same Old Song" are two of their upbeat songs that will get you dancing!

Oh man, one of my very favorite groups. That is one of the advantages of being old and I think listening to the best music ever in the 60s and 70s, especially the Motown sound. The Spinners, the Four Tops, the Stylistics, the O’Jays the Temptations, and on and on. I can’t even imagine not listening to this music when I grew up.

The Four Tops is one of my fave soul groups of all time, but my 2 favorite soul songs are The Toys' "A Lover's Concerto", and Frank Wilson's "Do I Love You (Indeed I Do). PLEASE get around to checking those 2 songs out!! Less known than the big Motown, Chess, or Stax artists, but I'm sure you'll love them both!

You gotta do Bernadette!! It is a Killer R&B record and by far my favorite. You must do more FOUR TOPS PLEASE!!! They were part of that first big wave of Motown, these guys and the Temptations were neck and neck for the best R&B male group.

Motown is one of the biggest eras in 20th century music. You've barely scratched the surface, especially when it comes to the top 2 male groups; the 4 Tops and the Temptations and the top female group, the Supremes.
    The 4 Tops songs:
    Bernadette
    Just My Imagination
    I Can't Help Myself
    Baby I Need Your Loving
    You're My Everything
    The Temptations songs:
    I Wish it Would Rain
    Cloud Nine
I Can't Get Next To You
    Ball of Confusion
    Since I Lost My Baby
    I Know I'm Losing You
    The Supremes songs:
    My World is Empty
    Without You
    I Hear a Symphony
    You Keep Me Hanging On
    Ain't No Mountain High
    Enough
    Never Can Say Goodbye
Dionne Warwick is another powerhouse. Check out more of her music: ( most of her songs were written by Burt Bacharack who recently passed away)
    Say A Little Prayer
    San Jose
    Walk on By
    Don't Make Me Over
    Heartbreaker
A House is Not a Home
    Theres always Something
    There to Remind Me

Between the Four Tops and the Temptations I could be happy all day with their four part harmonies. Two of the best Motown groups of all time. Check out:Baby I Need Your Loving, Reach Out( I’ll Be There), When She Was My Girl, Can’t Help Myself, Standing in the Shafows of Love, It’s the Same Old Song, Keeper of the Castle, I’ll Turn to Stone. So many more but that’s enough to start your rabbit hole lol.

There's a reason this sounds different than Reach Out. Reach Out was released in 1966 and this song was released in 1973 and music changed a lot in those seven years, not to mention recording technologies.

A little background on "The Tops". They had the same line-up for 44 years until Lawrence Payton died in 1997. Levi Stubb's was leader and lead vocalist but always put the group first. He was the singing voice of the plant in the "Little Shop" movie but split the money evenly with his band mates.

This pleasant-enough song is from 1973, after the Tops had left Motown and gone to another studio and after a couple of years without a big hit. From 1964 to "68 or "70, they had huge classic hits like Can't Help Myself (Sugarpie Honeybunch), Reach Out I'll Be There, Same Old Song, Bernadette, Baby I Need Your Lovin' (their first big hit), Just Ask the Lonely, and Seven Rooms of Gloom. With the Tops, it's best to stick with their Motown years in the "60's. You've heard Reach Out. Next I recommend Baby I Need Your Lovin', Ask the Lonely, and Sugarpie Honeybunch.

Are You man Enough was another huge Four Tops hit and keeper of the Castle from the 70s. One soul group being overlooked-The Intruders-Cowboys To Girls whose members would later form Tierra and have another hit in the 80s-Together.

They’re all genuinely best friends from high school. When they made their first big money they all bought houses on the same street. They had the same line up from 1953 until one died in 97.
There is a legendary “battle” between the Temptations and The Four Tops that you really should see after you know more songs by both groups. They start off singing their hits, then each group starts singing the other groups songs. It’s one of those TV events you have to see. It was at the Apollo theater in 1985. You know you got the right one if Micheal Jackson introduced them. Have you listened to the Temptations yet? I think you have.

"I'll Be There" is 60's Motown, this is pure 70's! You can tell by all the strings and horns. The 4 Tops are legendary, they stayed together longer than most groups. Other bands from this time to hear are The Stylistics, The Chi-Lites, and Harold Melvin and The Bluenotes!
