People don't realize Bobby played every instrument in this song from the piano, guitar, horns and sang by his self
DAMN! He was a musician/producer! Great stuff
wait. bobby played the horns too??? that’s at least a sax and a trumpet. are you sure about that?
@@headcontraption According to the interwebs:
Vocals, Synthesizer, Guitar, Bass, Drums, Vibraphone, Keyboards - Bobby Caldwell
That's for the whole album not this song specifically. There were other musicians on the song. Still impressive though.
People don't realize Bobby is your father
@@ivywilson6515 impressive for sure. which to me makes adding imaginary talents even more unnecessary
We lost him today, but his music will live on.
This is the music I grew up listening to cause my parents grew up in the 70’s. I’m glad so many people are starting to love good old fashioned soul music. ❤️
Love the content guys, I wish more of the youngins would listen to music outside of their regular comfort zone, especially Classic R & B.. Partly so they can see that most of what they listen to now is sampled from that 😉
Look up Tata Vega and her sound. Listen to “GOD IS TRYING TO TELL YOU SOMETHING” from Color Purple.
When I first heard "Black and Gold" by Sam Sparro, I assumed he's black because of the timber of his voice and how soulful he he sounds.
Rest In Soul Mr Caldwell🕊
You men are wonderful. So broad minded on so many things. You impress me. Don't laugh or judge lol... Bobby Caldwell was my era and I found out today in this video he is white. I thought he was black. LMBO!!!
RIP BOBBY CALDWELL (1951-2023)
Heart of Mine is one of my favourites
FYI-Bobby Caldwell passed away today 3/14/2023, after a 6+ year illness at the age of 71. Thanks for discovering and sharing his song with your fans, much appreciated for doing so. He was extremely talented in the music industry in more ways than most, playing lots of the instruments as well in his songs.
Thank you RIP. All the best R&B singers are gone ❤
I agree 💯
R.I.P. Mr. Caldwell! 🙏🏾🕊
I just heard he passed😪
RIP. What a voice. ❤
Rumor has it that Bobby is not only invited to the barbecue, but he can even bring the potato salad.
😂😂😂😂
Without raisins
Yes... I'll definitely trust him to bring potato salad 🥗
Hell he can just cook
Omg best comment of my night! 🤣🤣🤣
Soul is soul. Don't matter color, matter heart.
4-Sure. To much is placed on skin color. It shouldn’t matter. Soulful singing comes in all flavors. 🤗
Word!!!
Fer sher!
Not true black people smoke white people in all music they just have it.
I sang in an all black gospel choir and God bless those girls they took pity on me and taught me more than my very white voice teachers the whole time at Berklee
Bobby Caldwell actually won “Best new black artist of 1978”. Fact.
Cool. I heard that song 1979
@@evelyntaylor4470 1978 BUT CLOSE
If that's true, that's wild
Best new " black artist" I never heard of that category. R/B and other categories is one thing, race should never be, just like "blue eye". Music isn't about race per se, it's all genres, blues, gospel, country, etc., Everyone can enjoy!! ✌
@@evelyntaylor4470 I think they got rid of the category in the 80s or 90s for that very reason. Too many people were crossing the barrier with the blue eyed soul genre, and black artists breaking into the mainstream, rather than just R&B. I don't miss the black category, but I do miss the R&B of my childhood in the 70s and 80s. Modern music is severely lacking when compared with classics like this.
Never judge a book by it's cover, this White Man is SOUL BROTHA #1
Some white people have a paternal blackman in their lineage. The children of a black man with a white mother are light skinned, inherenting phenotypes from both parents. E.g. If the reactor on the right who has green eyes had children with a white woman, his children will look even more whiter than him.
Paternity vs maternity. White people with souls like black people have *paternal* black lineage. I emphasized this cause if it was-maternal black lineage but paternal white lineage, they're not like that.
Or. Hes just white. @@HeisTheIAMTHATIAM
@@HeisTheIAMTHATIAMwhat are you yapping about hahaha hes white thats it
@HeisTheIAMTHATIAM Bobby Caldwell has zero black ancestry, he is 100% white
@@e11-f2l he got a brothers soul
This is what we call 'Blue-eyed soul'. Michael McDonald, Ricky Astley and so many others fall into this category. It's a great rabbit hole to go down if you have the time.
Hall and Oates
Jon B is another one
Don't forget Lady T
Am I the only person who knew rick astley and Michael mcdonald was white
@@DWilliams621 No
So another legend ascends among us. May God have you
Robert Hunter Caldwell (1951-2023)

Bobby rocked the Fedora before Indiana Jones did!!
Yep this was the 70s
RIP Bobby Caldwell. This song will live on forever.
One of the heaviest sampled artists in hip hop. Everyone rocks with Bobby 🙌🏼
Bobby is certified 💯
I recognize it from 2pac
@@randywatson8347If Pac sampled your shit that means you're definitely certified 💯 real.
@@obey2dmaxand Aaliyah
Luniz sampled him for Playa Hata
He just passed away. My pops was a DJ, so he put me on. Mr. Caldwell was very talented im glad people appreciate his music.
Bobby played every instrument!!
Dude is ridiculously talented.
44 years later and this joint is still fire!!
He did that!!!
Preach Pastor Burris....
He just passed 😢
This song is incredible and never gets old
Another good one is: Simply Red - Holding Back the Years ... You'll be shocked to hear such a soulful sound from a red-headed Englishman
🎶 I'll keep holding on🎶
I love Simply Red!
their cover of you make me feel brand new shows it off best imo
Yes!!!!
Great song!!
These reactions are so on point. Almost everyone thought Bobby was black when this came out. He has a rendition of _Baby, It's Cold Outside_ with Vanessa Williams, and when I saw them perform it live on some TV special, I thought to myself, "Who's this white dude? Hmm. Probably 'Bobby Caldwell' couldn't make it to this party and this dude is his replacement." Little did I know!
Y'all have to listen to Lisa Stansfield's _All Around the World_ if you get the chance.
Vanessa Williams a very nice lady. Her and my uncle were good friends. My uncle has passed.
I love that song too
Lisa Stansfield was on an episode of Showtime at the Apollo. She had the place rocking with that song!
@@alizalevana9362 RIP to your uncle
@@freebirdallen I dig that performance. To see that crowd absolutely backing her with their "Go, Lisa!" chants was fabulous.
The blue eyed soul era. Great music times!!
This was 1978 Them 70s were soooooo Smooooooth
The instrument you're looking for at 0:57 is the Rhodes Electric Keyboard.
I never get tired of this song
Y'all ain't even ready for my girl Teena Marie. You gonna lose your mind. Start with the greatest duet of all time. Fire and Desire!
Tell it!
Yes! Pure fire!
Dating my wife, who is Japanese and a big fan, was the first time I ever heard Bobby Caldwell. That was in the 80s. We both spent most of our adult lives listening to him and thinking he was Black. We only found out he was white when reaction videos became a thing. 😂
Think my mom has a album cover with his face on it. She got tons of old school vinyl records
This was 1978
This song came out in 1978 though,
@@theodoreritola7641 why is there an argument here? I never said it didn't. Congratulations on knowing something I didn't know. But it is not relevant to my comment.
Lol
I am native American, my best friend is black. She found an old cassette tape of her mom's. She had nothing to play it on. I have an old walkman cassette player. It was Bobby Caldwell. Fantastic stuff. We dug this song ALOT! Yup we thought he was black. Nope, just got that smooth soul sound. Fantastic🌹
Fellas another white cat that sings soul music n u guys have to react would be Michael McDonald. Check him out.
Hell yeah . . .
Watching these young people react to Bobby Caldwell sing "What You Won't Do For Love", is wonderful. He played all instruments and did background on this song. He passed away on 3/15/2023.
He will be missed.
I'd also suggest checking put average white band for some truly soulful white men
“Make me do for love … what I would not do …” it’s a message about love and swallowing ya pride fellas. 😁😘
Another soulful white boy is the lead singer of Simply Red. Holding back the years and Picture book are my favorites.
Yes!
If you don’t know me by now
LOVEEEE HOLDING BACK THE YEARS
You should also listen to Simply Red " If You Don't Know Me By Now."
You guys really should listen to Simply Red, If you don’t know me by now and Holding back the years. Great blue eyed soul!
R.I.P. Bobby. You were the real deal, soo smooth.
Bobby Caldwell has 'soul'. People assumed he was black before seeing him. Another white guy with real 'soul' is Jeff Buckley. I suggest everyone listen to the song "Lover, You Should Have Come Over." Fun fact: Though he may not be the most 'soulful', back in the day people thought Rick Astley was black in the UK before they actually saw the video for Never Gonna Give You Up.
Oh I hope they react to Never Gonna Give You Up!
Buckley gotta So Real
Buckley's Hallelujah is a masterpiece.
First Madonna song I heard was 'Borderline' and it was played on R&B stations. Everyone I knew thought she was black or Hispanic. It sounded very NYC and was a club banger.
September 1987, I'm in a bar near Hanover, W. Germany, at the time. DJ is doing some impressive mash-up of MJ and the Tavares, then on comes Rick Astley's 'Never Gonna Give You Up' me and one of my Army buddies are talking about how he sounds a lot like Colonel Abrams, who is black. Get back to the States a few weeks later and see the video on MTV and we are floored to see this skinny red head belting out this song...LOL!!!
Bobby Caldwell has produced for many artists u should read up on how much he's done for the music industry
I’m just glad that these young Black Brothas are realizing what the incredible “old school” music was about!!!👍🏽😁
****blue eyed soul: included BOBBY CALDWELL, MICHAEL McDONALD, HALL & OATES, BOZ SKAGGS & a few others.
My dude on the left is shook. He’s speechless lol.
Also that instrument my guy on the right was asking about is the bass. This is the epitome of classic R&B.
This guy can sing his ass off. There are other white guys from back in the day who can sing like that too. He is the sample used in the song The Light by Common and do for love song by Tupac. You should do that song next the light by common and what do for love by Tupac it is 🔥 Next do Darling Open Your Eyes by Bobby Caldwell 🔥🔥
Great idea 💡
Same for Tatyana Ali's- Boy, You Knock Me Out too
And My Flame used in Sky's the Limit
Facts
Guru sampled this song as well in "Something in the past" in the Jazzamatazz Volume II album
RIP he just passed away at 71 on March 14, 2023. Very soulful singer so talented!
Too Young . Miss him.
That is what we call a smooth operator😀
RIP to the legend Bobby Caldwell who passed away this morning at the age of 71
🤯This is so weird but also why I like watching reactions. I've never listened to the whole song. Just heard it in commercials but now I'm paying attention I'm hearing how this song was used for Aaliyah's "Age ain't nothing but a number" and Tupac's "Do for love". Only took me a a decade or so to realize this 🤦🏾♀️😂 That horn too! There are so many songs that sampled that.
One super talented man I love this song. R.I.P. Bobby C.
Omg, now I remember this song. I'd forgotten all about it. I turned 23 that year. Rest in peace, Bobby.
P.S. I thought Huey Lewis was a black man until about 10 years ago.
R.I.P. Bobby Caldwell. 3/15/2023. Love this song!
He played all the instruments in this song and sang all the parts. Every part of this song is all him.
Do y’all know who Teena Marie is? If ya don’t react to her she’s another soulful white singer that shocked people
Yall need to check out the Average White Band "A Love of Your Own." I am born in 1967 and these singers were part of our culture and it was not considered appropriation. They were anomalies because they just had soulful voices, not trying just were. I love to see young people getting into our music, and your reactions are priceless!
Yaaaaaas!
FACTS "A LIVE OF MY OWN" 👌🏼👌🏼💯💯
Exactly ❤
1960 here. We really lived during the creation of some of the best music ever. And the highest mini-skirts and lowest hip huggers... and they were not considered nasty. lol I remember boys cat calling a group of us girls and we thought "we must look good today" lol. Now that is considered abuse... Strange times we live in.
They don't make music like this anymore and I don't believe they ever will. The best of times!
2Pac sampled this song in, "Do for Love." You should react to it. Thanks.👍
What's going to blow ya''ll mind is how many people sampled this guy
Bobby had talent. Something that's missing in today's music
True statement
I'm in my 50's and I found out maybe 10 years ago that this song was sung by a white man. I just so happened to watch the video for the first time ever and I almost fell to the floor. Props to Bobby Caldwell, I became a big fan.
I'm 55 and you're right I thought it was a Blackman but then found out he's white this song is beautiful
54 & I only found out in the mid 2000's because of the Tom Joyner Morning Show.
I know what you mean when you hear him only on the radio. We thought it was a different person when he sang that song. RIP Caldwell.
@@harpsgalore6584: I didn't know he had passed away until I read your comment.
@@freebirdallen it's ok I understand given that this song hits harder today now that he left.
One big old crazy human family with all kinds of colors and flavors....you young men are a joy to watch! Good luck - keep going strong!
This man has soul
R.I.P. , Bobby Caldwell.
I love the music from the ‘70s because there was still more collaboration between white, black and Latino musicians and singers - great stuff from people like Paul Simon, Chaka Khan and Rufus, Heatwave, War. Before that songwriters like Lieber and Stoller, Carole King and Gerry Goffin writing and producing songs with black singers. I don’t get why that changed.
…Stevie Winwood…
Democrats thats why
This is one of my favorite songs a classic will never get old. The music is on point💕💕💕
RIP To Bobby Caldwell. He just passed and I truly love his classic "What You Won't Do For Love" - MOST DEFINITELY A SOULFUL SOUL!💯
"What you wont do for love" means there is nothing you wouldn't do for love. Meaning you will do everything for the person you love!
I was in elementary school when this song came out and it's still my jam. Rest in peace Mr. Caldwell🕊.
Same here.
I would love to see y’all discover the jam sessions at “Live from Daryl’s House”
Daryl, from Hall and Oats, opens his house to guest Artist and its amazing. Recommend his session with CeLo Green performance the Hall and Oats song
“I can’t go for that”….Also, anything with The OJays.
Great suggestion! 👍
Yes, that was a great series.
How about Amos Lee and Mut lu with Darryl singing Caramel?
Hi, glad to see you young men enjoying some really good r&b, a great song like this is a timeless Classic! Even Tupac used this hook on his song years ago & reference B.I.G. and Common who sampled Bobby's " my flame", which is my favorite song by him. Mr Caldwell is extra talented & underrated! Love to see this, new subscriber! ❤
Check out Average White Band - A Love Of your Own (Live at Montreux 1977). They are a Scottish Funk and R&B band. They were FIRE! You'll have the same reaction.
YES!
Guys, sad news: Bobby Caldwell has just died, at age 71.
Good stuff ,your gonna love Michael McDonald
It has just been reported that Bobby passed away. May God comfort Bobby's loved ones.
Bill Withers has a live version of “Use Me” which slaps.
You had it dead to rights. A soulful white dude. He was one hell of an artist. God bless his soul. Glad you guys enjoyed his jam. 🙌❤️✌️
You can tell that the guy with the red hat listen to this song more then once don't let him fool you.. 🤣
He seems the least intelligent of the group in every video lol
LOL🤣🤔 he was so into it he’s just a cutie
I can tell that a few of you were really feeling those lyrics.🤗🙏🏽.
That’s such a good song. Here’s my requests boys, 1. George Benson - On Broadway (one of the greatest guitar players ever) and 2. the BEST banger with lyrics meant for these times Living Colour’s “Cult of Personality”. Love y’all’s reaction vids! ❤️
Corey Glover from Living Colour has a song out with Fire From the Gods. Check out ruclips.net/video/ZRTJTcc6Xjw/видео.html.
I’d love it if Bobby saw you guys bopping to his song. 💖
U guys gotta check out 2 from the ‘60s; “I’m A Girl Watcher” by The O’Kaysions & “Expressway To Your Heart” by The Soul Survivors! 💯🔥🤙🏽😎
This is one Amazing Man and when he made this in 1978 he made a Masterpiece and it will be a Masterpiece forever ❤💯👵🏽
There have been a few events in America's history where people were so shocked and they can remember exactly what they were doing right at the time that they found out like
1) When we first landed on the moon
2) When President Kennedy got shot
and
3) When any person found out that this singer, Bobby Caldwell, was white
The truth! Lol. I was watching a KevOnStage video two years ago when I found out and I'm over 50! Had no idea. What's funny is NO ONE in my circle knew either, except my mom. How is that?? Lol
@@studyingthewordtogether Haha-- yeah. I'm white myself, but my white friends didn't seem to know his music. I was first introduced to his music through my black friends. They thought this singer Bobby Caldwell was black and so I thought he was black, too- lol. Even though it doesn't really matter about skin color, it's still kind of funny because most of us pictured him a different way. I first found out about 6 years ago by watching a RUclips video, and I'm almost 50, too!
I showed my niece the music video and before he walked out of the shadows, I asked her what she think he'd look like. After a moment's hesitation, she said "Black?" The look on her face when he showed himself was priceless
Play her Michael McDonald and ask her the same question. 😂
Really nice to see this generation relating to past music. Big Ups!👀
Part of my playlist when I clean up due to my parents listening to him. I am today year old that I found out he was white. Holy shit!!!!!! ❤️❤️
A Classic! Hey, this song fooled a lot of us white folks also!
The sound you hear is probably the electric piano.
Rest Well Bobby ,.. 🙏 Thank you ,.. will Always Love Your Music ! 🎶 🌟

My favorite song of all time...I'm so glad you appreciate the talent of the music we loved growing up!
Notice how they kept him in shadow - they wanted people to think he was black, just like they wanted people to think Charley Pride was white on his fist album covers.
The instrument you were thinking of was a trumpet.
Check out Average White Band, that was anything but.
