They were all brothers and they could all sing. " A Penny For Your Thoughts" and their cover of "She's Gone"
Just a great band with great harmonies and two great tenor leads. Their "It Only Takes A Minute" was also a big hit and a classic cut.
That's my favorite Tavares song!
There all brothers...nice rabbit hole to dive into!!
@@shirleyjones9460 Me too-"Give me 60 seconds - no more" Love it!
Yes and more than a woman it only takes a minute was a big hit with take that the biggest boy band in uk since the Beatles lots hits filled stadiums and of course Robbie Williams was in take that
How about "Whodunit"? They lyrics recall many '70s detectives
Awesome!!!!! My dad is part of their band today, (no he's not a part of the original line up, but he tours with the remaining originals)... so they're basically my unrelated uncles lol
I too works for the brothers back in the late 70s early 80s. Sadly, we just lost another one of the family as in Pooch Tavares passed. Ralph died about two years ago unexpectedly and with john, Tiny and Butch… Those are the remaining vocalist of the band. God bless all
@@dipwaded John is my dad :)
I know your dad. I saw him here in South Carolina back in April,. He was visiting at my sisters house for a couple hours. He has stayed over in the past on his way home, after visiting with your grandparents. Tell him I commented on your post after his tour. He'll know who it is lol.
FINALLY someone reacting to this often-overlooked song from the disco era -- one of my favorites. I've been waiting for this for a long time.
Hey, ditto!!!!!!!! Finally!!!😊😊😊❤❤❤🕺🕺🕺💃💃💃
Wonderful, Wonderful, Wonderful - what more can I say!
You should also check out their version of the Bee Gees' "More Than a Woman" from "Saturday Night Fever."
Also their cover of "Freeride."
@@seanswinton6242Really? I didn't know they did a cover of Free Ride. I can't even imagine that. I must check it out
That was monster DISCO hit in UK , love it 🏴✌️
Jay & Amber, you'll love their "It Only Takes a Minute" !!!
YES!!!
I miss these days when music was FUN!!!
A 1976 Disco classic. Tavares also has a hit cover of "More Than a Woman" produced by The Bee Gees from the world-conquering Saturday Night Fever soundtrack (1977). You guys should be able to identify Disco more easily by this point. Especially with how up-front the hissing hi-hats and four-on-the-floor kick drum were in the mix. Disco is basically a formula. Almost any song can be done in a Disco style. Disco is pretty much streamlined Funk with orchestral and/or electronic embellishment. The bass lines are as funky as straight-up Funk, and often so is the guitar, with chicken-scratch, muted rhythms, or a wah pedal being frequently deployed techniques within the genre. The drums were straight, though. No syncopation, just a pumping rhythm. There were usually keys. Usually piano or electric piano. Sometimes synthesizers too, though they sounded spacey and robotic in the 70s and were often used for sound effects as much as actual notes. Another common thread with Disco is that most songs utilized orchestral elements like strings sections, horns, and even woodwinds, harps, and classical percussion, like kettle drums...
"Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel" was almost a decade after the mid-1960s peak of Motown and has nothing to do with the record label or Detroit, though. Motown Records was still around during the Disco era and several of their artists dabbled - some (like Diana Ross) more than others. By this point, Motown Records was at a low point and losing major artists, like the Jacksons. But vocal combos used footwork and backing harmonies in genres like Doo Wop and Girl Groups long before Motown was in business and in genres like Philly Soul, Disco, New Jack Swing, and Boy Bands long after the Detroit label's heyday. "Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel" was also past the crest of Motown's second big wave, in the early 70s with young MJ and socially conscious Funk by Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. They still had hits in the late 1970s, and acts like Commodores were keeping them relevant, but I think most people would have associated this with Philly Soul (The O'Jays, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, TSOP, Three Degrees) before Motown. Especially since Tavares isn't very tight with their footwork. Not Motown-tight, at least.
'Ta-var-es' were massive back in the day in the U.K. other tracks by them to react to are:
"Don't Take Away the Music",
"It Only Takes a Minute",
"Whodunit",
"The Mighty Power of Love",
"One Step Away",
"My Ship",
"I Wanna See You Soon feat' Freda Payne",
and their cover of The Bee Gees'
"More Than a Woman" which was in the charts at the same time as the original, there are other tracks but these are some of my favourites by them.
Their cover of the Bee Gee's "More than a Woman" is a great Classic from the 70's!
All of the above! Love it!
@@julioleaty8660 Thank you, they're great tracks from a great band.
@@georgewallerlll496 I actually prefer Tavares' version of the song more than the original, even though The Bee Gees are great.
@@Adam_Le-Roi_Davis.Me too!
One of my many favorites from the 70's, can't help singalong to the lyrics and the song
..."Class of 76"...The Tavares was such an underated disco band...
Don’t Take Away The Music, Never Had A Love Like This Before, It Only Take A Minute. They toured with The Bee Gees and covered- More Than A Woman.
Never Had A Love!! Such an underappreciated tune
IMO, they did a much better version of More Than A Woman than the BeeGees
Both versions of More than a woman were included in Saturday Night Fever's soundtrack. I believe they did the Bee Gees' one, so they might like to check Tavares' too.
0:28 I just got done listening to Tavaras not long ago. They bring golden memories. Thank you for introducing them to others.also check out Don't take away the music.Love you both. Your follower.🫶👍🫡
Love Tavares, many happy times dancing to this track.
These guys are from newbedford ma and are all family. I have seen them in concert when I was a kid one of my favorite groups.
me too! ❤
And don't forget "Don't take away the music", I thank You from MÉXICO 🇲🇽.
Hey Mexico, I'm in paradise Puerto Vallarta!!
Hola de Los USA gracias 🎉❤
Why do the 70s and 80s music make me feel so good. Even in my worst days I come home and listen and I feel better.
You had it right, Amber. Tavares is pronounced with two syllables, the Portuguese way. These brothers are 2nd generation Cape Verdeans out of New Bedford, Massachusetts. That town still has a rich tradition of Afro-Portugese music and culture. The rest of the country was blessed to be exposed to some of the magic that escaped their tight-nit community in the 70s with this band. @Jay they may look Motown but their sound is closer to a Gamble and Huff Philadelphia Soul. Anyway, a great song. Thanks for sharing your reaction to it.
My hometown!!!
Wow. Very interesting. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.
Definitely "It Only Takes a Minute" would be a good next choice to react to for Tavares. Their performance of this on "Soul Train" was fire back in the day.
Great classic group...very popular song back.in the day..enjoy it..❤💃💃💃💃💃💃💃💃
one of the most underrated groups ever.
Ahh... My Mum's absolute favourite to dance to at any wedding/family celebration!
🇬🇧 🎉
Next Tavaris reaction has to be it only takes a minute girl absolute fire. Love you guys..
One of the best pure disco songs of all time, along with their Don’t Take Away The Music. Perfection for lighting up the dance floors…
Tavares is one of the great groups from the 70's, Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel is one of my favorite songs. Just a note, Tavares is made up of 5 blood brothers, and the name Tavares is their surname or family name. They started out as Chubby And The Turnpikes in 1959, and changed the group name to Tavares in 1973 while simultaneously charting their first top 10 hit of the Top 40 with the song Check It Out, a really nice ballad. Usually brothers Chubby and Butch take turns on lead vocals in certain songs, but all the Tavares brothers have strong lead voices although the other brothers stick mainly to harmony. Through the years they've had a handful of hits, and are best known for 1976's Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel. Rob and Amber, have you seen the movie "Saturday Night Fever" with John Travolta? Well Tavares sings the song in the film titled "More Than A Woman" written by the Bee Gees. The Bee Gees recorded it also, and their version was used in the movie also, but IMHO the Tavares version is the best, no dis to the Bee Gees. Other well known hits are "Goodnight My Love", "Who Done It", Us and Love" just to name a few. Love Tavares, I've spent many joyful and fun nights in the discotheques dancing and partying to their songs, into the wee hours of the morning. Great memories.......
I love this song, it was extremely popular when I was a teenager and in my early 20's. The Great Disco Era of the 70's, so easy to dance to!
This song is one of my all time favorites. One reason being, it's a Disco song that isn't repetitive like so many others were. 😊
You got the pronunciation right. Sort of like Ta-VAR-ez, the Tavares brothers were from the Providence (RI) / New Bedford (MA) area and they're Cape Verdean-American. They had several hits in the mid-to-late 70s including (I think) a couple of songs on the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack. I'm feeling to lazy to look it up to be sure. I grew up in the Boston metro area at that time and loved their music.
Their version of More Than A Woman is on the SNF soundtrack. 😊
I used to dance to this back in the Disco Days. I'd put on my White shoes and Blue Leisure Suit and dance until 1 AM. Great song and Great group.
This band was fabulous, feel good music…Tavares! 👏👏👏💃🕺🏾💜💜
Tavares is Disco/R+B. The dance floors were packed when one of their songs came on💃🕺
LOVE this song!!!This song got HUGE radio play back in the day.
@MikeKassel-no4ko I wore platform shoes back in the day...messed up my ankles really bad too LOL
@MikeKassel-no4ko I KNOW i would!! LOL Too much milage on the tires for platform shoes. But they looked so COOL!!
We used to.have the most beautiful songs ever, they used to tell stories an Great dance hits too. Just beautiful we were so very lucky. ❤❤ to have been teens in the 70s was just amazing time of my life.
THE MEMORIES ❣️
THANK YOU FOR THE MANY SWEET MEMORIES ON THE DANCE FLOOR
😍 🤗 😍
Tavares..."Remember What I Told You To Forget". A gem.
I saw Tavares in concert once in Braintree, MA in October 2004. The Tavares has its roots in New Bedford, MA and in Providence, RI. My favorite Tavares song is "It Only Takes a Minute" which I first heard on a compilation album released by TeeVee Records which was owned by my late uncle out in Palm Springs, CA.
I have been waiting, waiting for you to react to one of the most underrated groups of the 70s the Tavares, talent personified definitely a part of a growing up😊
Love this group. ❤
One of the best songs to get you on the dance floor, I've been to alot of soul/disco 70's weekends😊 ❤️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
The 60’s and 70’s were just the best.
Fantastic music in EVERY genre and it was everywhere.
Boy,what a party we had.
Other Tavares hits you should listen-
Remember What I Told You To Forget
Check it out, She's gone and Hard core poetry.
It's the most joyful happiest funky song in existence. Can't say enough about these brothers , I'll have a crush on Chubby forever, his voice is one of the best I've ever heard of all time.
One of my favorite groups!!! I love this video!!! ❤❤❤ And of course they were brothers 😎😎😎
i love them too and i'm a white irishman
Oh how I love this song! Their voices blend so well 😊❤
Tavares was one of my favorite hustle to dance to.. really one of my favorite songs..
OH FOR MORE MUSIC LIKE THIS. THE 70'S WAS SO FULL OF GROUPS LIKE THIS. INSANE VARIETY!!!!!!!!!!! CLASSIC.
Used to rollerskate my legs off to this joint...they have such gorgeous voices
Always loved this song, so happy you like it, I enjoy watching you two groove to it right off the bat 🎶🤗🤩💖🎶
Memories of dancing to this song. Love it!!
Awesome, another song I suggested. I hope they get to my other R&B picks:
- Main Ingredient - "Everybody plays the fool"
- The Stylistics - "You Make Me Feel Brand New"
- Toni Braxton - "Un-Break My Heart"
Jay, Tavares did a version of “ More Than A Woman “ written and also performed by yours and mine beloved BeeGees. Both versions are featured in the movie and soundtrack Saturday Night Fever.
I love Tavares!! I saw them in Hampton Beach, NH. They were considered a local band (all of New England is sort of local).
This is a very, very popular song for our local beach bands in NC The Entertainers, Band of Oz, The Catalinas, just to name a few probably never perform without doing Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel!
A very feel good song, makes you happy. Love it.
Group members were from both Massachusetts and Rhode Island. "Only Takes a Minute" for your next reaction to them.
When I feel low I play this song and feel better. Its so lively and beautiful
I forgot all about this song and I really like it. It sounds like a mix of Motown and disco.
Total "disco feels" - up and at it on the floor when the first opening notes hit our ears. Wonderful times! Butch & Chubby on leads for this - they could all sing lead, however. Amazing group of brothers!
Love this such a great group of brothers 😅❤
They performed in a PBS special when they were in their 60s and they still had the moves!
They were featured on the Saturday Night Fever sound track with More Then A Woman
Luv the Tavares bros great tune🎉
That song makes you feel like dancing and twirling, it makes you soar!!! I remember the dance floor, I miss the dance floor!
Love, love the Tavares!!!! Especially this song!
Talking about the “movin’ and groovin’” dance steps, you ought to have seen what ‘ve seen.....back when I was a teen, I went to the roller skating rink, and watched them dancing to this song ON ROLLER SKATES! Amazing!
All brothers, they were very popular in the 70s sang more than a woman as well by the bee gees.
CK out Yvonne elliman as well.
So smooth... love watching Amber grooving 😍😍😍 go, girl!!!
I remember when this song came out in 1976 I was 10. It was all over every radio station in New York. Such a great happy song. My mom would blast that song in the car and do the shimmy as she was driving. 😂
OMIGod..... One of my favorite Disco songs ever! We had so much fun at the discos in Dallas in the 70's The dance floor jammed at the first note of the song Wish you were there!
This was so disco in the day..and we loved it...just gliding across the dance floor.
Remember "Whodunnit" ? .... Saw them live one night. Stunning Vocals, Brilliant !
Disco era family group. Yes, you got the family name right Taveras. They were all brothers, and, in the video, there were 2 lead singers Jay. This record went gold. They also had a Gibbs Brother version of "More Than A Woman" on the Saturday Night Fever movie soundtrack. Reminds me of another R & B group The O'Jays which you only did once. Please react to their song "I Love Music". Thanks. 😎
I saw them perform live back in 1980 at the Santa Clara County Fair. Going alone at age 13, it was great to get out at night and to see them in those glittered flame outfits! 5 brothers all in a band. They were GREAT performers making me think back and boom! The spirit is still there, but my bawdy is 40 years older now. I can't stop smiling just to picture them onstage. That was a love-savoring moment. Unforgettable, I tell ya. *muah* Great lyrics, bass, harmony, catchy, funky-lite, top 40 even. Woo! Too bad they didn't last longer. The music business is just that. A business. My business was dancing to this jam every time I hear it.
Tavares is their family name. They were/are related. Nothing like the family harmonies.
They were staples of the early disco era. This song, along with a cover of a Bee Gees song, was included on the Saturday night fever soundtrack.
Next track from them that you should check out is, it only takes a minute.
You guys are the best! Always look forward to seeing your updates in my RUclips notification box.
Thanks Guys, Tavares were brothers and their legacy of hits still endure today. They won a Grammy for their cover of "More Than A Woman" (Bee Gees) on the Saturday Night soundtrack and have some fantastic songs for you still to explore. Whodunnit..It Only Takes A Minute.. Don't Take Away The Music just to name a few.
Keep Safe Keep Strong 🦘🦘🦘🦘❤❤❤❤🎵🎵🎵🎵🎄🎄🎄🎄🎅🤶
You're absolutely right, I'm so smart. That's smooth, that's the music sounds good. The singing the sounds like it goes along with the music. It's in harmony. Yeah I do I do love it's that's a good song that's a good turn
Heaven must be missing an angel , More than a woman ,( from the Saturday night fever movie ) Don't take away the music , A penny for your thoughts hardcore poetry , Never have a love like this before , Turn your love around , Ten to one , Remember what I told you to forget ( which is one of my favorites ) It takes only just a minute, this R&B brother R&B music 🎶 group all their songs and albums are off the hook . Tavares .❤
Best disco song of all time, and one of the best songs of the 70s.... "Shame" by Evelyn Champagne King. How have you not listened to this dance floor (and wedding party) epic yet!?
This one put a smile on my face and warmed my heart...
one of the standard songs at the discotheque, I visited Scotty's on 7th Ave often, it was a popular place
Classic 70's groove. Love the brothers Tavares.
I was 13 in 1976 when this song came out and it’s still one of my favorite😎
OMG! Took me right back to the dance floor! Haven't heard this in a minute.
These guys have always been fantastic! Their music and harmonies are so so good! Lots of great songs by these guys! They dance through all their songs and they’re so good all the way around! They are originally from one of the Islands off the African coast called Cape Verde and they’re all brothers!❤
Great musical choice. Very danceable song . 70's Disco music
Dressed to the 9s at the disco every Friday and Saturday, we love the 70s
Don't Take Away The Music is a huge favorite of mine by Tavares
It only takes a minute is such a great song by Tavares! Please check it out!
I've been waiting for a reaction to Tavares...in the mid-70s their songs were all over the radio and played in discos and clubs for many years after. Cherished memories of my older sister playing this album on Saturdays while doing chores, singing and dancing along. Please consider "Remember What I Told You To Forget" for your next reaction ❤🙏 Can't go wrong with Tavares...The Stylistics...The Delfonics...The Moments...Ray, Goodman & Brown
They were so awesome when I was a teenager. Love this song!!!
Ahh this takes me back, it had so much radio play in the 70's, such an uplifting tune. Tavares are still performing my cousin saw them on their UK tour a couple of months ago and she can report they have still got it.
What a brilliant tune from back in the day, go Tavares !
Oh yaaa. A dance floor must. 🪩 💃 🎶
Been asking for this song for two years. I'm beyond happy you're doing it now. You're both going to love it, I know. ❤
Tavares would certainly show up on the R&B charts, but the truth of the matter is, they were more of an ("R&B/DISCO") group...not "Funk", perhaps "POP" in the mix. But, people who love that blend of ("R&B/Disco") realllly love Tavares....Good reaction!
Jay your reactions are such a joy to watch. I get such a laugh out of it, puts a real old 'smile on the dial and a smile in the heart' for this old gal in AU. Well done and thanks!
Yes, Tavares. Five Brothers (siblings), they are an American R&B Super Cool Band, lots of songs to choose from. Some of the "best music" of the70s. Their cover of the Bee Gees' "More than a woman", were both in the movie Saturday Night Fever.
YAY ITS ABOUT TIME!! One of my favorites from 1970"s !! 🙂
These were brothers!!! I wish that you were able to hear the longer version of this song. That was a cowbell being hit!!!!
Guys, not all black singers were signed by Motown.
I used to dance the hustle to this song. I love it!
