I Was about to pull the trigger on a 17 pioneer 1K, but i really looking foward to that more Trail oriented family ride, can wait to see it ! With two girls (6 and 8), that would be perfect for riding with that legendary reliability !
I've got my money on the Yamaha X4 being a smoother rider, quieter ride and more agile with more snap to the throttle! It is a long stoke engine and actually has 5mm longer stroke than the Pioneer 1k. The Wolverine will probably out crawl the Pioneer, at least I think it will.
Yamaha is finally up-ing the power and engine size. I'd like to see something like an X-4 but a 2 seater with a decent size tilt box. My view is that the engine size needs to be used to it's maximum potential as a work vehicle with play aspects. Also, would like the enclosed model with a heated windshield for colder periods and venting that allows fresh air in during the warmer seasons. I don't think that AC is a deal breaker in Canada. It would be good if Yamaha included a tachometer so the driver find the sweet spot for, work, trails, and open roading. Mirrors (or at least one) should be a standard. Also, there are more ATVs and UTVs on the main roads now - as it's legal in some places. So turn signals would be a good feature too.
We don't have a testing date scheduled as of yet but we would expect to get to drive it soon., Once we drive it the review will immediately follow. If you haven't subscribe and you won't miss it.
Gary Kline it would be awesome if they did that. That's the first thing we thought after driving the X4 for a couple minutes. You can see the full test on this machine here.ruclips.net/video/oqA08d1sZu8/видео.html
Guessing it will be around 65 mph. I read somewhere the engine is rated at 69 hp, which puts it slightly less than the Can-Am Commander 800's engine. That machine tops out at right at 70 mph.
That's a lot like the Kawasaki Teryx, similar top speed. Eliminate the speed limiter and you can easily get 60 mph out of it. John Deere did the same with the Gator 850i. They even came out with the 860i, which had the exact same engine just with the top speed raised to 60 mph instead of 53 mph in the 850i. The 860i also added optional power steering.
Greg Rowe I don't think it'd be an unreasonable expectation now the new engine has debuted. It'd come with a full redesign of the two seater Wolverine I'd suspect so it may be a little while unless they were developing it side by side (pun intended?) with the X4
CVT's don't slip nearly as bad as a regular automatic transmission, and they don't rob much power. Most CVT issues are caused by overloading, or driving through deep water causing the belt to slip. A manual transmission UTV would be a lot of fun though.
Also I sat in the higher end model wolverine and I really didnt like it, now here me out. First it felt way to cheap! Second when i was trying to close the door on it the lever got stuck that opens in closes it so I couldnt close the door. Finally it felt like I would more take my grandparents on a ride then with my family it was just kinda idk felt like im supposed to go down the trails like at 3 mph (We all have experienced these people before).
Apparently its not that fast on top end either. Speed limiter just like the Kawasaki Teryx. I'm sure its not that hard to get a programmer or aftermarket cdi to override it, though I'm sure doing so would void the warranty. Even the new Polaris Ranger 1000 limits top speed to 50 mph and it has quite a bit more power.
mattcm32 you're not going to get a car or truck down the trails that this vehicle will get down. Here's a link to our first test. ruclips.net/video/oqA08d1sZu8/видео.html
Doug Webre They said the same thing to me when I got an Ace. 1500 miles of places you probably shouldn’t take a rig, and I’ve had $200 and 3 days worth of repairs in 3 years. They aren’t as bad as they used to be. (Had a 2001 sportsman 500... don’t even wanna know what I spent on that.. lol)
I was actually hoping for a 50" YXZ SS. Well at least they have a good engine to put in one now, this engine in a much smaller and lighter 50" machine would be very quick.
Yamaha is doing a great job of making the SXS machines the ones to buy. I knew a twin cylinder engine would be coming alone sooner or later. Yamaha is always longer to announce a new machine. They take the time to make a super reliable ATV/UTV which is why it is the brand to buy. Other manufacturers seem to put out new machines every year to add on to a class or make a new one. Yamaha does it the right way and assures us of a top quality machine that makes the high dollar purchase justifiable. I wonder why Suzuki has never made a SXS or really upgrade their ATV's? I still believe to a point it has to do with $$$$ as the Suzuki cars and suvs went out of business. It's a real shame to as Suzuki has always been a top machine like a Kawasaki, Yamaha, or Honda.
I'd like to see it in a 50" YXZ SS. Give it lower gearing than the 1000cc version and limit top speed to about 65 mph like the other 50" models and you'd have a solid contender in that class.
12 inch rims with 26 inch tires??? Really? It looks like it needs about 2 inches more ground clearance and suspension travel. Other than that, it looks like Yamaha has a real winner on it's hands.
Cool cool cool, but I can see pioneers advantage. The front occupant seating looks to be more comfortable than the Honda, bud looks some what of a copy, and way more bed space in the Honda. Good job Yamaha with the new twin engine!!! Wonder if the top speed is at least 65mph, that's what kills the og wolverine and there other utility models.
eric rush unlike the Honda Pioneer 5, The Wolverine has full-size back seats. Back seat occupants will be quite a bit happier in the Wolverine X4. Not saying that the Honda doesn't have any advantages though. Here's our first test of the machine it may answer some of your questions. ruclips.net/video/oqA08d1sZu8/видео.html
I'm sure this is a fantastic machine cuz Yamaha makes great stuff as all the Japanese companies do but let's be honest it's a complete carbon copy of the Kawasaki Teryx 4 with way less cargo room when you carry four people
UTVonDemand thanks for the response and another fantastic review I still feel the same way it looks like a great machine and I'm sure it is but it just looks like it did the same thing that Can-Am and Polaris to try to one-up certain areas of the teryx4 by shortening it four inches making it quieter and maybe making the suspension better I'm not sure but I still feel that there is no room for cargo with four people in it at least the Teryx when you have four people has a pretty good size storage in the rear especially a nice clean one with the trunk they offer anyway thanks again for the great reviews
UTVonDemand I stand corrected I seen a couple more videos and they seem to address the three problems that the Kawasaki teryx4 has ride quality Engine heat and engine noise and they do have a storage box that goes in the back looks like you remove your tailgate so I would say they did it all right and they have more and better accessories available than the teryx4 does
James Patterson we do you like the fact that the teryx4 has a dedicated cargo bed although it's not as large as the Yamahas cargo space with the seats slid forward. Yamaha had the advantage going third in the compact four-seat sport utility category. It's definitely an ice machine. We would like to run it head-to-head against the Teryx 4.
UTVonDemand thanks for the response back and once again I really appreciate all the reviews I can't wait to see the head-to-head between the x 4 and the teryx4 as of right now I am being swayed towards the x4 especially if it addressed those three areas that the Terex 4 has trouble with which once again is ride quality noise and Heat
All sounds good let's see how long it lasts on a real trail and not like in there videos any thing can pull Jet ski anything can go on a flat dirt trail make a real video of it in action take it threw rock hills and mud then I'll buy it you want it to sell put some one it that is going to drive it like they stole it
Robert Barton okay, here's our first test video. We only had one day with the machine at the Press launch so we were only able to get so much footage. Hope this helps. ruclips.net/video/oqA08d1sZu8/видео.html
I Was about to pull the trigger on a 17 pioneer 1K, but i really looking foward to that more Trail oriented family ride, can wait to see it ! With two girls (6 and 8), that would be perfect for riding with that legendary reliability !
I just have ordered a blue one with roof, mirrors, windshield, 3500lbs provantage warn
Way to go Yami!
Hope they put those nice color-matched doors on the 18 Wolverine R Spec!
bigbluegpr that would look good.
UTVonDemand From looking at the Yami website, the pics of the 18 R Specs just show the old doors. No SE version either!
bigbluegpr usually stuff trickles down or Finds Its way on the other models so let's hope they do it when they release a special edition version.
46% more torque over the current 708, hot damn!
Shootout!!! Teryx4, Wolverine, and Pioneer 5. Hill climb, drag race, top speed and stopping distance are a must. PLEASE!!
i'm sooooo wating for that shootoutt !!!
Also ride comfort, cab noise and cab heat. Great idea!
fourtrax10 Pioneer 5 will blow them away.

I'm impressed, sounds like it's got it all. I like the back seats way better than the ones found in the pioneers
Hooray they got the twins in the Wolverine, did they give any clues to putting it in their atvs?
Single handle gate, tilt wheel, adjustable on the fly seat, and a twin engine? Is like Yamaha is listening finally!!
When will there be a test ride video??
We don't have a testing date scheduled as of yet but we would expect to get to drive it soon., Once we drive it the review will immediately follow. If you haven't subscribe and you won't miss it.
Can't wait, Any update on date test ?
Patrick Leclerc we will be reviewing the X4 and will update you on a test date as soon as possible.
Please put the twin 850 in the 2 seat wolverine! Pretty please? I would pull the trigger in a heartbeat!
Gary Kline it would be awesome if they did that. That's the first thing we thought after driving the X4 for a couple minutes. You can see the full test on this machine here.ruclips.net/video/oqA08d1sZu8/видео.html
About time, it'll be nice to see some variation in the sea of Polaris RZRs lol.
Top speed?
MassiveOverkill1 no clue yet. Yamaha doesn't provide that type of information and we haven't driven it yet. We expect to be in the car soon.
Guessing it will be around 65 mph. I read somewhere the engine is rated at 69 hp, which puts it slightly less than the Can-Am Commander 800's engine. That machine tops out at right at 70 mph.
Sadly, top speed is only 51 MPH ruclips.net/video/Bq9taOo8RuI/видео.html
Yep Sadly.
;(
But we probably gonna be able soon to take the limiter off
That's a lot like the Kawasaki Teryx, similar top speed. Eliminate the speed limiter and you can easily get 60 mph out of it. John Deere did the same with the Gator 850i. I would like this in a 2 seater with tilt steering adjustable seat and of course the 850.
I wonder if the 2 seat Wolverine will get this twin cylinder engine as an option as well.
That would be cool
Greg Rowe I don't think it'd be an unreasonable expectation now the new engine has debuted. It'd come with a full redesign of the two seater Wolverine I'd suspect so it may be a little while unless they were developing it side by side (pun intended?) with the X4
i heard it was
That's what I'm waiting on...
I wish UTV's and ATV's used manual transmissions, don't CVT's rob power? Or maybe use a DCT like Honda!
CVT's don't slip nearly as bad as a regular automatic transmission, and they don't rob much power. Most CVT issues are caused by overloading, or driving through deep water causing the belt to slip.
A manual transmission UTV would be a lot of fun though.
Danny Murphy buy a Honda!
Are you guys gonna do a review on can ams new maverick x3 that is supposed to come out on the 20th?
Also I sat in the higher end model wolverine and I really didnt like it, now here me out. First it felt way to cheap! Second when i was trying to close the door on it the lever got stuck that opens in closes it so I couldnt close the door. Looks exactly like the Honda pioneer
Someone needs to rip the seats out of the back, and make a huge bed. Yamaha reliability with all that power would be awesome.
I just bought one yesterday, I'l let you know how it is. Yee Haa.....
What is this type of vehicle for? What does it do that a car or truck doesn't at the same price?!
mattcm32 you're not going to get a car or truck down the trails that this vehicle will get down. Here's a link to our first test. ruclips.net/video/oqA08d1sZu8/видео.html
Love too see this engine in a 4 wheeler... New SUPER GRIZ 850.... id order one right now. Sell my 1000xp Polaris in a Hart beat to be back on a yamaha
We have a video on our other channel ATV on Demand what's blowing up on this very subject.
I like it however the Polaris top frame looks better
Derrick Kimsey Polaris might look pretty but you'll be spending thousands on repairs with a Polaris.... ask me how I know.
Ernie Desjardins No shit. So glad I just bought a Polaris. FML
Doug Webre They said the same thing to me when I got an Ace. 1500 miles of places you probably shouldn’t take a rig, and I’ve had $200 and 3 days worth of repairs in 3 years. They aren’t as bad as they used to be. (Had a 2001 sportsman 500... don’t even wanna know what I spent on that.. lol)
Doug Webre And 2/3 days was them fixing a problem from the start with my dealer not tightening down my fuse box and wires.
Was hoping for a turbo yxz... guess Yamaha was hyping something not cool... typical
I was actually hoping for a 50" YXZ SS. Well at least they have a good engine to put in one now, this engine in a much smaller and lighter 50" machine would be very quick.

Interesting. Too bad I have the Honda Pioneer 1000-5.
Time to jam that motor in the grizz
BTAYZ 131 absolutely. We're already throwing together a little speculative video on that subject for the ATV on Demand
UTV ON-DEMAND

Copied the Honda Pioneer
Looks just like our 2017 Teryx4 - just sayin'
