We visited Brushy Mountain Motorsports Park in North Carolina to put the all new 2018 Yamaha Wolverine X4 through its paces.
Slipping down into the cab of the 2018 Yamaha Wolverine X4, we noticed the door bolster and latch plate was a tad intrusive, but once in the seat the comfort surrounds you. The high back seating makes you feel welcome and fits this larger rider very well. Details are in the Yamaha DNA and with a simple seat belt retainer located just below the upper seat belt mount you can more comfortably accommodate shorter riders by weaving the belt into this secondary harness clip. Small items like this are Yamaha’s way of accommodating anyone willing to get out and enjoy the world around us.
The 2018 Yamaha Wolverine X4 is not only a brand new, ground up build for Yamaha that is manufactured in Newnan, Georgia, but it is also setting a serious milestone for Yamaha and its existence in the Side-by-Side segment. What many will soon realize is that the powertrain in this model has set a precedence for what is to come. That’s right, a brand-new machine with a brand-new engine. This Wolverine X4 has a Twin Cylinder long stroke 847cc fuel injected engine that not only brings more power throughout the RPM range, but it produces low vibrations throughout the chassis as well.
With the tilt steering set, our ride began with just a simple twist of the key. Our initial impression of the engine and its manners is that it is not only quiet and keeps the cab noise down really low, but it seems to be really smooth and there are no annoying noises throughout the throttle pedal range that would be distracting or concerning. The gated shifter in the console is super easy to shift into forward gears or reverse gearing with no clunky feeling as the transmission gets itself ready to go. As you step into the pedal you will instantly realize that there is a new mill in town and the torquey response is impressive.
On the trail, the twisting climbs through Brushy Mountain were not only fun but it really showcased the agility of the new chassis. The narrow 59.8-inch width really gets you into sections of tree lined trail with ease. Turning the X4 is also a breeze as it seems to slip around corners even if they are tight and up-hill or off camber. The trails were covered in some areas by huge rocks and plenty of rutted or very off camber ditches which were changing sides on the trail regularly even in short stretches of about 20 feet. The dual sway bars front and rear seemed to help this issue by keeping the machine nice and steady in those situations. There were a couple of downhill sections that gave our mind a run for the money, but with a steady pace and a good line, the 2018 Yamaha Wolverine X4 stepped right through it. It really does give the driver confidence in getting up or down most any trail.

So happy to see Yamaha finally develop a twin engine. I'll admit I was surprised they went with a parallel twin over a v twin design..I like both so issues from me either way. This machine will make a great comparison in a shoot out vs. the Honda Pioneer 1000-5. Yamaha's long time correctly built Ultramatic system vs the DCT on the Honda. I'm a dirt bike guy so I like shifting but will admit that Yamaha has a really good CVT system..Suzuki's is actually very similar,,the Quadmatic but they never really advertised it as such. I believe even the Kawasaki Teryx now utilizes a centrifugal clutch constant belt tension unit also. I call the others belt slammers,,,lol! Hey it still works, but more chance of frying a belt if you leave it in High range where you should of been in Low range.

I finally got a chance to look at one of these in person and I couldn't disagree with you more on the rear seating the seats are very comfortable probably even more comfortable than a Kawasaki Teryx 4 I'm only 5 8 height wasn't the issue but the actual foot room in the rear seats was pitiful and small I'm sure it's a great machine Japanese make high-quality very durable equipment

Really interested in it but the deal killer is it's top speed is only 52. The Pioneer 1000 and Polaris General get you into the 70's. The transmission in these under utilize the power in the engine.

It's a great engine. Can't see why it wouldn't work out great in a Grizzly.

Did anyone here about a possible Grizzly 850 release on November 6th?

I wouldn't be surprised to see it in a Grizzly, but I'd be very surprised if it happened this year.

      2018 X4 has 847 cc. 2018 Wolverine Gen 1 (2 seater) had the 706 cc. 2019 introduced the X2.

I hate it. Hideous. Will cost a fortune to repair. Way too high centered and underpowered. I'll stick with my home built 1340cc buggy builds for 5K. I can't believe it took so long for Yamaha to add rubber grommets. It's not something to be proud of. Has the high centered seats like the Ford Bronco 2 which we all know took flight on simple cornering. Looks like they are becoming a car manufacturer instead of a utv manufacturer.
