  • Here's a Craftsman tractor with Briggs and Stratton 22hp ohv twin cylinder engine which has just been restarted after a couple of years and now runs poorly and even then likes to run with choke on. Diagnosis of issue and removal of intake assembly and full carb disassembly all the way through reassembly to test run.

    I found the ports to the heads were leaking air past the o rings due to warpage. I found the face of the manifold to the carb warped and letting in air as well. I also found that the rubber gasket under the transfer tube had swelled or just mashed so flat over the years, It was obstructing the space around the emulsion tubes nearly blocking them. ALSO, the the gasket under the black thing behind the throttle plates, the old gasket was partly obstructing flow. Glad it worked out for you, just some tips on things I have discovered.

    The difficulty in the engine turning over is caused by the valves being out of adjustment. These engines use a compression release on the camshaft and the valves have to be set correctly for it to work.

    I've got a 26hp with the same setup. I did a basic quick clean like you said in the beginning and it'd only run on choke. I had a feeling it was gonna take a chemical bath cause it sat for years. I thought make adjustments on the screws but i need this thing to do the work next season.
    Thanks for the video. You helped me make a decision.

    Have a rebuild kit in hand when you open up one of these older carbs full of O rings, seals, and gaskets that shrink, swell, deterioriate, and crack. Also replace the 2 intake to cylinder square cut seals.
    Remove float bowl first, then remove fuel solenoid. You will then see how the plastic fuel tube adapter fits.
    Never use a powered driver on carb fasteners.
    The 4 studs are not 4mm, They require a female torx socket.
    The 2 float bowl screws have JIS heads, not meant for a #2 phillips.

    Need a lot of love and a cleaning
    It’s all easy fix and reasonably labor
    Fuel filter between fuel pump and carb really helps to keep fuel pump rubber from entering carb
    Red or white will both work and a good paper filter from stens

    Air intake gasket goes on after you put the four bolts in. The bolts have heads about an inch from the top that seat into the carburetor body. Note when the first bolt was tighten the gasket popped up. You broke through the gasket as the head was seating into the body. Probably no big deal since this is the air intake and the gasket was still surrounding the bolt holes. Excellent video.

    This is just what I was looking for, I have an almost identical engine with the same problem.

  • @Wardropulous
    @Wardropulous 3 года назад +2

    Just took one of these apart today. Something I noticed is that with the air filter still off, the engine wanted a bit of a choke to run smoothly, otherwise it would surge and stall like this engine did at the beginning of the video. This makes sense as the carburettor would be tuned to take into account the resistance of the air filter. Without the air filter there's not enough sunction generated to draw enough fuel through, so it starves itself of fuel.

    On plastic manifold with new seals I still add silicone because they work and leak

    Great video. If this doesn't work for you try this. I have cleaned my Nikki double barrel carburetor on a John Deere Z535M 3 times and it would only work for about an hour and then it would start surging again. I had to look elsewhere. So I took out the gas tank a gave it a good rinsing. There was a lot of dirt in the tank. I also removed the tube going into the tank and blew it out. After all that the machine works great so far. I have manged to cut the grass for more than an hour now. Just thought I would mention this because everyone looks to a dirty carburetor first, which I did. I hope this helps someone.

    • @steadyeddie7453
      @steadyeddie7453 Год назад

      If it runs fine for a hour or so, then surges, sputters, etc, try removing the gas cap. You may also have a clogged vent in the cap causing the fuel pump to pull the gas tank into a vaccum.

  • @thardyryll
    @thardyryll Год назад +1

    Good lord. This crapped-up mower first needs a thorough pressure washing. You can bet the fuel tank is full of debris, so remove and flush it. Replace the fuel lines and filter - they are cheap. And NEVER bother to clean and rebuild these carbs unless your time is of no value. As suggested by another commenter here, a new knockoff is $30 on Amazon and installs in minutes. I have purchased two for a 23-year-old machine that gets used every day. That said, this machine has been so thoroughly abused that rough running is likely to be only the tip of an iceberg worth of troubles.
