    You Got This!!! I was wondering why you would put a boat in the water knowing she will take on water! Then you answered that question in this episode! I hate when "officials" take advantage of you as well... I agree with @kennethharrison8718 Patience, and I'll add one step at a time! Yes there will be even more frustration, but with Perserverance, hard work, and expenses, it will all pay off! She was wrecked and sat on the hard. Always an adventure learning new things and dealing with complications. The boat didn't sink so that is good and the motor started which is also good. Once you are in a yard where you can work on it I expect things will go faster. It is good you can at least assess the boat in the water before you are on the hard. I think that is better than thinking it is all ready to go after doing a bunch of work and then having to shake out issues once in the water. Now you at least have a chance to get a feel for those systems and make a list and that is a win for sure.

    Not sure if you are talking about limited rudder angle or the defect that the Amel Super Maramu has; The prop is not at an angle and is fitted on keel, which creates a few ill effects. One, too close to center of effort (COE) which means little to no prop wash effect when manuvering. The factory H6 AutoProp flips when going into reverse probably adds to the no prop wash and is a maintance nightmare. Also sitting so far from rudder, the slow effect on rudder effect until greater forward movement. Not even to mention the crazy C-Drive gearbox. Hence the mandatory bow thruster when manuvering in tight quarters. Good luck, you are in for a huge amount of continual maintance on these vessels.

    @waterbuoy9121 Год назад +1

    We bought an old Amel about 12 years ago (a Maramu). First thing we did was pull out the old engine and fit a new one - that way we had a 'solid' base from which to work. If you hunt around it is still possible to get an unused (but old stock) TAMD22 (105hp) Volvo Penta for less than £7k sterling, which I think was used on the later Super Maramus.
    There is no such thing as a free lunch. You have paid less than 10% the typical value of an 'in commission' Super Maramu so it is natural that you will have to spend money and time fixing this one up. If your heart isn't in it then walk away now before it takes its toll on you and your relationship. Otherwise, and as others have said, roll up your sleevs and prepare for hard graft and the inevitable tears. Good luck!

      Haha spoken with complete honesty. We love this comment. We really needed a kick in the ass to wake us up from normal land life and this boat has done that and then some. Thanks for the advise about the engine. We’ll look into it! Cheers for watching

    • @waterbuoy9121
      @waterbuoy9121 Год назад

      Thanks for taking the comment the way it was intended!
      I was thinking about your steering issue last night. A couple of thoughts:
      Firstly, the Amels have a huge turning circle, particularly when compared to modern cruising/charter boats. It is that which gives them such stability when on ocean passages, rather than the more reactive fin keel, and I suspect is why they all leave the factory with a bow thruster. The Super Maramu has the same draft as the Maramu, yet is almost 8' longer - their turning circle is therefore much larger. Furthermore, the distance between prop and rudder is much larger than on most boats due to the underwater configuration, meaning you get less kick from the rudder when giving the engine a burst forward.
      The second thought is wrt to the autopilot. Is it a linear drive unit? If so, then it might be worth checking that the ram is straight and true after the boat was hit. A simple check might be to disconnect the ram at the rose joint (there is likely just a P clip or single nut holding it all together) and see if that makes a difference.

    Just curious when docking how come you are not using the bow thruster?
    These boats need that thrust at slow speeds.

    That 1992 model is worth about US$150,000 to US$170,000 so still looking like a good decision.

    Had a thought if the engine was running at the time of collision could well be the injector pump timing was knocked out of alignment or the high pressure fuel pump is damaged.

      Unfortunately we didn’t get a second opinion and things did not go according plan. Thanks for writing in Patrick. You’ll be able to see next week that we really should have got a mechanic to give everything a once over. Like always, thanks for the comment 🙌🏼

    Yes you have made the right decision. It will take time and effort to get it to spick and span condition but then you will be the proud owners of a special vessel. Eat the elephant one mouthful at a time, focus on the next task and worry about the big picture when you are ready to go sailing in a year or so

    Ok first of all I like what you are doing, I started with my wife a little bit the same journey with built no 28 in the beginning of May/June, Not that it was in a incident but the previous owner got sick and the boat was for three years for sale. Off-course price was not as low as yours because it is in a sailing condition, but there is enough cleaning and replacing to do. About maneuvering this boat, it is not really doing great with slow speeds under power because the prop is to far away, the same for backwards, that's why there is standard a bowtruster. What I did understand from this Perkins engine is the only issue is off-course clean fuel and the turbo otherwise these engines should be capable to do 10000 to15000 hours. the turbo could be stuck due to carbon build up. And yes ripping of cruisers by marinas and officials seems to be come more common in this world, even in France the birth place of the Amel Super Maramu, it is happening, we are in there eyes a floating cash machine

    No worries!
    In a month or three when you are making headway in the rebuild, you will look at these issues as minor compared with the problems you will find as you work on it. Like an iceberg you can only see what's visible now. The real extent of work is still hidden, waiting for you to find it. Surprise! You will question your decision to buy the boat endlessly as you find more issues but hang in there, you will eventually find and fix them all and when you are done and sailing away you will give a toast and say;
    "NEVER AGAIN!"

    Don't you guys have a bow thruster on that thing? I'm almost certain Delos does.

    You guys were clearly in the mood to do a big boat project when you looked at this boat and then decided to buy it. Don't allow the doubt to creep in too much, just because there is a long list and you have had a few other issues. You know there is a water leak up through the rudder. Yes? Well, there's a chance there could be a leak up from the prop area too. Maybe??? These things can be dealt with.
    Also, did you say you just motored 300 nm to Pangkor Marina? Even to this marina in the video, the fact that the engine got that far and if it has gotten you to Malaysia as we know it has, then that means the basics of the internals of that engine 'appear' to be sound. Whatever the issue/s is/are with it, are peripheral. Yes, it could cost a bit of money to fix it, but not the tens of thousands to replace it. If that motor had internal damage, it would not do the trip, but even if it went for a while, it would eventually destroy itself.
    I think you have purchased a gem here Mate. Keep up that Aussie spirit and fix this old school bus up and you'll have a family wagon that can take you around the globe many times over. Great videos by the way. I can't wait to see all the rest of them as they come through.

      Cheers for the comment mate! As it happens we didn’t make it all the way to Pangkor with the engine… more of that next week. We had A LOT more troubles with the boat. But yes, she is a gem and we are repairing her as we speak. Thank you for your words, all the best mate

    Wait....it was hit by a ship...you knew it was taking on water, you surmised the rudder was damaged while being pushed broadside, everyone knows engines don't do well sitting and would probably need to be serviced/repaired, you knew the mast was down, I'm just trying to wrap my mind around the shock that the boat is in the shape it's in. I was excited to see you get it back into good condition. But now I'm not sure about staying tuned.
