    A bizarre number of One Piece readers seem to treat the story like some kind of fantasy football league, solely paying attention to who wins what fights and what it supposedly says about how strong they are. Completely losing sight of the heart of the story, the actual emotions and motivations on display, in the process.
    Regardless of what comes next (personally I'd really like Carrot to join the crew but could just as easily see her finding her calling elsewhere), thank you for acknowledging the human side of these characters.

    So many people on reddit, twitter and RUclips were acting like this chapter was 100% Oda saying Carrot will never join the crew. I saw it as her real world wake up call similar to how Zoro got his from Mihawk. Carrot is a warrior like all the minks, but she's never experienced firsthand major threats until now. Deep down Carrot knows that revenge is not what Pedro ment by "keep moving forward" but as you said she's still a kid. She's running on pure emotions right now and in war you can't do that. Luffy firsthand learned that when he tried fighting Kaido the first time. Side note: People need to stop acting like Luffy has requirements for his crew. This man tried to recruit Kinemon's severed legs during Punk Hazard. Luffy isn't that deep with his crew choices like he's gonna sit Carrot down, have her fill out an application and interview her first.

      Imagine telling Luffy someone can't join his crew, because of A or B.
      He'll look at them like "Wha...tragic backstory? The hell are you talking about?"

    The interesting thing to think about is that other than Luffy, Carrot is the only real character in the series who has had a death of a person close to them happen in real time and gove them such a visceral reaction. I mean you could say the Whitebeard Pirates but there wasn't really any individual focus with that. Other than Luffy and Ace, Pedro and Carrot is really the only case of this happening. Everyone else who has motivation is usually motivated by a death that happens in a flashback. It's just interesting that with how few deaths in One Piece there are, Oda has specifically given this to Carrot. Honestly people say that a character needs a sad backstory to join the crew but I see no reason why that has to be the case. I think the route Oda is going with Carrot is far more interesting. Throw her into the world and snuff out her naivety and innocence as opposed to show us it happening in a flashback.

      Yep. It would've happened with Vivi, but Oda decided to bring Pell back.

    • @rindoubaka1574
      @rindoubaka1574 3 года назад +3

      @@remytyndle3504 The difference I would say with Vivi is that Pell was the first major case of Oda not killing off characters. It came at a point in the story where the general trends and patterns weren't yet established. Pedro however came late in the story when it was a pretty common idea that Oda simply doesn't kill off characters unless they serve an important narrative role in their deaths (Maybe except Monet.) Ace and Whitebeard are the only other real examples. For some reason Oda chose to kill off Pedro and give Carrot this extra motivation. My point being that killing off a character within the story in the present timeline is incredibly rare. It would be odd if Oda broke this pattern to inspire a side character to beat another side character, especially when it's a narrative choice he clearly avoids using in most cases.

    People can’t comprehend the idea of a character failing and growing from it. They have to succeed and only succeed and if they don’t, they’re lame, or weak. It’s like they watch Dragon Ball Z but only care about the fights where Goku wins, not watching Goku, Vegeta, Trunks, Gohan, all get their asses handed to them in the process, and train for the next fight.

    So much truth in one Video could be overwhelming, not for me though, i already figured she would lose back in Chpt. 995.
    Marco once also wasn't able to let go from his grudge against Blackbeard and lost to him as a result. But as he let go from that grudge, the Phoenix found new purpuse and a new battle that is worth fighting for.
    All vengeance will do is preventing you from moving onwards.

    Don't know how I hadn't seen this video yet, but it was amazing.
    I'd also add that people who think losing to Perospero makes Carrot too weak are forgetting that Perospero easily clapped Brook and Chopper. With the future sight of months since this was posted, I think that Nekomamushi could be the one to tell Carrot exactly what you said. Something along the lines of, "leave revenge for Pedro to me, you have somewhere else to go". It makes sense to me because Pedro was captain of Nekomamushi's guardians and had to have had a really close relationship with him, and because every Straw Hat is still up after their Tobi Roppo fights. What are they supposed to do now, just stand around waiting for Luffy to beat Kaido? I think the Straw Hats are going to have a new role to play now, and Carrot will likely join them in that. I could really see the Straw Hats team-fighting Kaido like they did for Oars/Moria before Luffy came in for the final blow.
    I think Carrot still has like a 90-95% chance of being a Straw Hat to me, just because Oda hasn't written any other logical conclusions for her character yet. Returning to Zou makes no sense right now. I think the grand fleet is meant to only be the seven we've seen, and I doubt anyone else is joining it. If Carrot doesn't join the Straw Hats, Oda has to write something else to do that makes sense. That's what separates her from the other top candidates for me right now. Yamato, Momo, and Tama all have a lot of logical outcomes that don't involve joining the Straw Hats, where Carrot doesn't at this point in the story.

    I thought it might've been to keep making sure the Big Mom crew remained tough looking. Cuz the big 3 from Kaido's are kinda seeming like jobbers, not being able to handle Marco 1-on-1.

      This is a much better showcase of Marco's abilities than 2 years ago. Here, you see why he was Whitebeard's 1st Division Commander.
      You're right about Big Mom's crew, because I feel they're more dangerous than Kaido's; Cracker would totally slap Jack.
