Is Volkswagen Software Still A Mess?

  • We challenged the new 3.1 software in our Volkswagen ID.4 against the paid version of A Better Route Planner for our big 600 mile trek from Pittsburgh, PA to Milwaukee, WI. We utilized Electrify America chargers for three different stops in this video and each station had a unique problem.
    While waiting to charge in Cranberry Township, PA, (January 17th, 2023) we had a conversation with another EV owner (Chevy Bolt EV) who had been using his car for rideshare and food delivery services. He informed us that this charging station had been slow for a while with no improvement. On the date of posting this video (April 15th, 2023) this station was shut down completely for about a week and is now open again. Based on the PlugShare check-ins, this station appears to be upgraded with new cables and connectors, but with the same "reduced charging speed" on the chargers. However, there have been some check-ins where EV owners recieved over 100kW charging speeds on 350kW charging stations.
    We go over the problems that the new 3.1 software in the Volkwagen ID.4 has and compare it to the premium version of A Better Route Planner.

    We did just manage to get the 3.1, but we had already decided to do a trade in for a Model Y. It’s such a shame because we love our 1st Edition. But with lower price on the Y and the rebate, and not knowing what would happen with VW software. And EA fast charging is so unreliable, we won’t even miss free charging. Did I mention that the 2023 Pro with four wheel drive is $4000 more than the Y. And it doesn’t qualify for the full rebate due to the Chinese battery.
    VW blew it by building a great car with a substandard operating system.

      VW's software definitely has a lot to improve on. Whether I get any more substantial updates between now and December 2024 will help determine whether I keep the car at the end of my lease.

    Good information. My ID4 just got the 3.1 update and I've always used ABRP for any trips taken, but I would like to try the built in navigation for my next trip. Enjoying your trip and commentary regarding the accuracy of both apps.

      Thank you for watching, Andy! We thoroughly enjoy the new 3.1 navigation in our VW! For small trips we tend to use Google Maps but when doing these larger trips we will be following along with the VW navigation and cross-referencing with ABRP. Please reach out if you run into any problems or have questions!

    The VW nav was showing 479 miles to home and ABRP was showing 415. There’s your time difference

    • @midwest_ev
      @midwest_ev  Год назад +1

      Yes! That was our confusion during the time because both the VW navigation and ABRP told us to use the same charging stops. Later in the video we pointed out how the VW navigation was having us exit the west-bound lane and turn around to charge at the Electrify America located off the east-bound lane. This was the reason they were off in mileage!

    Chademo port is likely the added reported available charger. Happens also if EA uses a level two at the site.

      Thank you for that thought Bryan! At the particular time there was a Mach-E using the Chademo stall so I'm not sure if EA would still report it available. Definitely something to keep in mind.

    This is just sad. I can't imagine it's been even worse. Try driving with a bwm i3 from 4 years ago and you'll feel ripped off with this system.

    Question...very new to EV's and my Id4, no road trips yet, but could you share why you don't charge more or longer and wouldn't that give you less stops? I know the fuller the charge, the slower it becomes...is that part of the reasoning? Thanks!

      @midwest_ev  Год назад +1

      Great question and I'm happy to answer! I've learned the limits of my car pretty well and generally like keeping stops short as the car charges faster when I arrive at a station with a lower state of charge. Additionally, it doesn't benefit me much to charge longer than I need to since I will likely need to stop at the next station anyways due to the spacing of the EA chargers on the map. I hope this makes sense, please let me know if I can clarify further!
