  • We Come A-Darkly Caroling - David Lovrien
The singers demanded their share of minor Christmas carols and they got their wish. Featuring over a dozen yuletide favorites plus original music and lyrics, all deliciously twisted and filled with dark humor.
    Grade 5 Composition
    Composed by David Lovrien (ASCAP)
    Conducted by Hector Guzman
Performed by the Plano Symphony Orchestra and Civic Chorus (SATB)

    Lyrics:
    (0:35)
    We come a-darkly caroling
    to Christmas celebrations,
to sing the songs you know and love
    with minor alterations.
    (0:48) - Deck the Halls
Deck the halls with boughs of holly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
    (0:55)
We take the third note of the scale
and drop it half a step.
    It may sound somewhat Jewish,
but we think it's worth the schlep!
(1:10) - Up on the Housetop
    Up on the housetop reindeer pause;
out jumps good old Santa Claus.
Down through the chimney with lots of toys,
all for the little ones Christmas joys.
Ho, ho, ho! Who wouldn't go?
Ho, ho, ho! Who wouldn't go?
Ho, ho, ho! Who wouldn't go?
(Gaily they sing, while people sing, songs of good)
Ho, ho, ho! Who wouldn't go?
(cheer, Christmas is here, Christmas is here!)
Up on the housetop, click, click, click!
Down through the chimney with old Saint Nick.
(1:44) - Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
    Hark! The herald angels sing,
    “Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on Earth and mercy mild,
    God and sinners reconciled.”
    Joyful all ye nations rise,
join the triumph of the skies,
    with angelic host proclaim,
    "Christ is born in Bethlehem!"
    Hark! The herald angels sing,
    “Glory to the newborn King!”
(2:13) - Jolly Old Saint Nick
    Jolly old St. Nicholas,
    Lean your ear this way!
Don't you tell a single soul,
    What I'm going to say;
    Christmas Eve is coming soon,
    Now, my dear old man,
Whisper what you'll bring to me:
    Tell me if you can.
    (2:41) - Away in a Manger
Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
The little Lord Jesus lay down His sweet head.
The stars in the sky looked down where He lay,
The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay,
on the hay, on the hay, on the hay…
(3:06) - Twelve Days of Christmas
On the first day of Christmas
my true love gave to me:
A partridge in a pear tree.
On the second day of Christmas
my true love gave to me:
    Two turtle doves,
and a partridge in a pear tree.
    3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8,
On the ninth day of Christmas
my true love gave to me:
    Nine ladies dancing,
    Eight maids a milking,
    Seven swans a swimming,
    Six geese a laying,
    Five golden rings,
    Four calling birds,
    Three French hens…
(3:40) - We Wish You a Merry Christmas
We wish you a Merry Christmas,
We wish you a Merry Christmas,
We wish you a Merry Christmas,
    And a Happy New Year!
We wish you a Merry Christmas,
    (We wish you a Merry)
We wish you a Merry Christmas,
    (We wish you a Merry)
We wish you a Merry Christmas,
    (We wish you a Merry)
    And a Happy New Year!
We wish you a Merry Christmas,
We wish you a Merry Christmas,
We wish you a Merry Christmas,
    a Merry Christmas,
    a Merry Christmas,
    a merry…
    (4:06) - Carmina Burana - O Fortuna
    Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas,
    And a Happy New Year!
    (4:35)
    We Come A-Darkly Caroling
    A-knocking at your door
    We have more minor carols
    Too major to ignore.
So step out of your comfort zones
Where you sit nice and warm
And join us in the magic of
    This early Christmas storm!
    (4:58) - Oh Christmas Tree
O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree,
    How lovely are thy branches!
O Christmas Tree, O Christmas tree,
    How lovely are thy branches!
In beauty green will always grow
Through summer sun and winter snow.
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
    How beautiful thy branches!
    (5:39) - Jingle Bells
    Dashing through the snow
In a one horse open sleigh.
    O’er the fields we go
    Laughing all the way.
    Bells on bobtail ring
    making spirits bright.
What fun it is to ride and sing
    A sleighing song tonight.
    Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells,
    Jingle all the way!
Oh what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh, Hey!
    Jingle bells, jingle bells,
    Jingle all the way!
Oh what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh!
    (6:17) - Here We Come A-Caroling
Men: Do you hear what I hear (what I hear)?
    Here they come a-caroling
    Among the leaves so green,
    Here they come a-wandering
    So fair to be seen.
Love and joy come to you
And to you glad Christmas too,
And God bless you and send you a happy New Year
And God send you a happy New Year.
    (6:39) - Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite - Russian Dance (Trepak)
(6:52) - Deck the Halls (Reprise)/Santa Clause in Coming to Town
Deck the halls with boughs of holly,
    Fa la laaah,
    (You’d better watch out)
    La la laaah!
    (You’d better not cry)
Don we now our gay apparel,
(You’d better not shout, I’m telling you why)
All: Troll the ancient yuletide carol.
Fa la la la laaah, la la la la laaah!
Laaah laaah laaah la la laaaaah!
Deck the halls with boughs of holly,
Fa la la la, la la la la, la La LA!

I think that "O Christmas Tree" would have been better served as "O Tannenbaum" in this instance.

Ha good call. :) My son said that section made him picture a giant evil world-ending arboreal god (like a Dark Souls boss) 😆
