As a Low Brass Player (Specifically a Euphoniumist) I always feel bad for you guys. You guys deal with overly fast and complicated licks, while we just have the accompaniment and sometimes the melody.
In 1967 I played violin on this number with the Lafayette Indiana symphony. I fell in love with this and still am....at the age of 71. Leroy Anderson was a genious
just found out today that we playing this for our concert. as a tuba player i love that the low brass gets to start the whole thing lmao. it's funny bc we have marching season to finish and start veterans day music which is very anxiety inducing but also awesome bc i love stars and stripes and eternal father. i love concert band lol
Meanwhile my old marching band literally shits on concert band 24/7 lmao. I visited my friend even though I'm a graduate and the low brass section, the section my friend is was literally shitting on the band cause it was now a concert band and were like 'Imagine just sitting there instead of marching, oh wait that's fucking us, Colorado, your marching season is too fucking short' and I'm just sitting there like 'I agree with you fully, Concert Band is absolute shit'
3rd trombone was so good, sure it had a little bit less to it than 1&2, but those parts where we were just left with our own separate thing sounded so good.
I am in my sixties now and have been a fan of Leroy Anderson's music since I was a child. Particularly at this time of the year. A Happy and Healthy Christmas 2022, Everyone. 🇺🇸 🏴 🎄
I've heard and played many a Christmas medley in my day, but this is without a doubt the best one I've ever heard. Every song is incorporated so naturally. Leroy Anderson knocked this thing out of the park.
Played this earlier this year (2nd trombone), we altered the ending to resemble Shostakovich's "Festive Overture", best decision my band director's ever made!
0:42 "Mr Anderson? I think you forgot to write something for the clarinets." "Oh okay, just make something." (Apparently it was making the most finger twisting measures in all of music)
I'm the chimes/bells player at my school and the timpani player and I counted the measures in both of our pieces and he had 218 measures and I had 220. I feel your pain, but I have 2 more measures of rest than u lmao
Since my band only has 4 percussionists, I have to hold 2 timpani mallets and 2 bell mallets in my hand because I have to play the mallet percussion and timpani parts. I have 2 counts to switch from bell's to timpani, and i have to play those with an extra 2 mallets in my hand like an idiot lol
Last year we had 5 percussionists but one of them didn't know anything about music. I had to switch between bells and timpani, but my band teacher didn't tell me that until the week of the concert 😂
Played this at my recent christmas concert in college, I was the bass drum part so i basically didn't start counting till half way through the song, great piece though!
I'm a freshman and I'm playing this for our christmas concert at December and I'm a 2nd flute player who has an 2nd oboe part because there are no oboe players in our band
Oof not fun. At least you don't have to deal with "the forever trill" at the end of the second flute part. I hate it. All the people near the flute section hate it more.
I played the trumpet tuti with my friend and we changed the Rythm in measure 142 in corner to: | 1 la lee 2 and |. Aswell as in measure 149 to: | 1 trip L let and |. (with the triplet starting on the and of 1). It adds variety and style with the tripple tounge there. If you play the tuti there I recommend this if you can tripple tongue!

I was in band 14 years ago and we played this song. Tuba is one of the most important parts because we keep the time of the piece in sync. It sounds beautiful though when everyone does what they’re supposed to do.
I had to play this last year for our Parade and it was something else… it was said said to rain but it didn’t it was still cold though and not a lot of people knew their parts including myself I knew the first half.
This is fun for just about ANYONE who isn’t percussion. Seriously, there was more than 20 spots that could’ve used any of the 3 percussion parts. I almost feel that the guy writing the percussion part had no idea what he was doing. Because that snare roll at the beginning goes 3, 4, 1, 2 &. It ends on the & of 2. That is kind of just plain stupid. Also, please send prayers to my poor friend who played the mallets on this song, and died of boredom.
after just getting off the high of at the crossroads timpani part I'm handed this timpani part. I suddenly remembered how most classical composers treat percussionists
IDK if the rest of the high winds would say the same thing. All of them have the same figure with slight variation from 186 onwards until the *sfz* at 214 leading to the rall into O Come All Ye Faithful. I mean, the piccolo or piccolos, all four clarinet parts, and oboes have this ostinato.
We're Playing this in our band and the wait for the bass drum is unbearable because we dont start until measure 168. But the timpini in joy to the world makes up for it
We're playing this in December. Unfortunately, I got assigned a trumpet part, which means lots of sitting out while the people with cornet parts play a lot.
Clarinet 2: This is cool, but when do I breathe?
