Man, there are so many places I miss in addition to Likelike Drive Inn.. King's Bakery kinda by King & McCully, Bea's Drive-In by Kaimuki HS, Byron's by the airport, Dot's in Wahiawa, Jolly Roger's, Shakey's Pizza, Wisteria, Flamingo's, Colombia Inn, Bob's Big Boy... the list is endless. That L&L order... "Chicken katsu, french fries instead of rice, gravy all over" used to be my go to order at Grace's. Back when I was young and could eat all of that without gaining weight. lol.
Just started watching your videos….they are great… making me crave old favorites and new/old places to try! One thing… put your “Teri” or any other sauce containers right up against the plate so you don’t waste and all the goodness that does drip doesn’t get away…it drips right on! Especially at .95 cents! Keep up the good work!
I miss Diners on ke'eaumoku,Q's in kalihi, KC waikiki & Alex drive in kapahulu. All of these you showed are some of the last old school. Keep highlighting these places so everyone can continue to support the businesses..🤙
Thank you for creating these fabulous videos of all the different restaurants out there. The camera zoom in on the food is perfect too! I want to try and lot of these food items now after watching. They all look so ono and comfort food style of cooking. Keep up the good work! 👍
It's funny. just yesterday I watched Oahu's oldest eats and I commented how I cried when Dillingham Saimin, Patti's Chinese Kitchen, Libby Manapua and Like Like Drive-in closed. I wish someone would bring back Ed & Don's Ice Cream. I loved their Kona Coffee ice cream.
I think Golden Duck still going? We went there twice a year, every year, for almost 17 years for me. We ate pork hash, butter fish and bitter melon there, and triple ordered gau gee I no stay - I'm at da mainlan, so I'm outta sync wit stuff. 😬😅
Great , helpful video. Looking forward to trying some of these on our travels. I really appreciate how you specialize on local hometown restaurants, which I love.
Super nostalgic old-school comfort food I grew up with at all the original locations, except I’ve only been to the Kaka’ako Highway Inn and never been to Leeward Drive In (too far from town). You hit all of my favorite spots and most of my favorite orders, so everything was so familiar and looked so ‘ono, but you showed and described each item really clearly and “appetizingly” for people who did not grow up eating this food as we did. Great job! I think I’ll go up the street to St. Louis Drive In for lunch today and get a Super Japanese Deluxe Plate (Japanese Deluxe Plate with scallops)!
Great video thank you! Miss those places and home very much ... also miss Kelly's in mapunapuna and Byron's and of course Chunky's by the old stadium in Mo'ili'ili... can go on and on with the places... thank you much for the video! Stay Blessed... Aloha!
Thanks to the cutest couple on RUclips! A lot of work went into this video and it shows! Great review on our iconic Hawaiian snack shacks. Thanks also to Davon our third musketeer! See you soon ❤
Aunty Amanda and Uncle Felix coming in clutch with the shout out to Ace!! We love you guys!! Keep up the awesome vlogs!! We can’t wait till the next video!
OMG, watching you guys when I'm hungry is always dangerous, but this episode was even more dangerous than usual! I'm so craving all of those comfort foods! Loved seeing the Kaimuki neighborhood too, since I grew up there as well! 🥰
Hi Felix and Amanda. It was awesome to see you when I was in Costco a few days ago with my parents. I hope that someday my channel can be as successful as yours. Mahalo!
Grew up eating poi by itself - never mixing it with anything else and always clean that bowl and storage container. I’ll eat day old poi but prefer fresh. Oxtail soup - my go to is Neimann Marcus (believe it or not) on Thursday. We recently tried Super Pho’s oxtail soup and was impressed! Hands down!!! I tried the other Liliha Bakery locations and somehow, the flavor from the grill at the original location makes the food soooo ONO! I find it always entertaining to sit at the corner and watch the cooks manning the grill. Rainbow’s - boneless chicken, Mahi mahi or beef cutlet are my go to. St. Louis Drive Inn…YUM! I don’t think there’s anything on their menu that’s not good. Leeward Drive Inn…their fried saimin is winners! I miss The Heights in Aiea - their fried saimin was the BOMB!!!
Hi Amanda and Felix. Hope you're doing well. It's just great watching you guys enjoy these delicious foods. I cannot wait to go to Hawaii as I've never been. Peacee and smoke eazy 420 out.
Aloha, Amanda, Felix & Davonn: What a highlight & plethora of locations & food! I have been to all of these locations and have eaten the food recommendations. But that burger, OMG at Liliha Bakery...I had it, bomb! Nothing like a Char broiled burger. Not many places do Charbroiled burgers anymore, but I do know of another place that serves ono charbroiled burgers, but it's not locally owned. What was also funny was that piece of chicken at Leeward drive in, so huge...then you show the chicken at Zippy's so tiny. I often eat the Loco Moco at Kapiolani Coffee shop since it comes with mac salad & I order it with Fried Rice vs white rice. One of the Sunday's specials are the Sweet-sour spareribs. So good! Thanks for sharing & have a super day...
You guys make Hawaii afforable to visit since food is the next biggest expense next lodging . @3:12 Love poi when it's tangy , but as a kid had to have a lot sugar !! @11:46 When Amanda sees something she wants on another plate , nothing is going to stop her ( LOL ) @14:18 Corned beef hash and eggs - definitely need ketchup and shoyu over the rice ( LOL )
Jolly Roger in Kahala, the corner where Zippy's now stands. "Cheesy Gal" a double Cheeseburger and "Suzy Q" a teriyaki slice and American cheese. There was another location at the Kam Shopping Center. I miss Shakey's Pizza and the big bubble browned cheese.
once I read the two words "original location," I'm immediately watching it: it has a unique aura, long-time (residential) customers that have been going to a place for decades/generations and a certain ambience that can't be duplicated at a different area; "hanabada days/shmall kid time" nostalgia is one heck / he(double hockey sticks) of a drug. I remembah Kapiolani Coffee Shop while playing bowling (in high school) at Kam Bowl; before it moved to City Square Shopping Center and then, to Waimalu Shopping Center (in Aiea). You can't go wrong with (Pinoy kine) Lechon (unlike the stateside brand, Baken-Et's "fried pork skins" Chicharonnes)... Liliha Bakery's "old school" diner area (I had breakfast there once) and their famous Coco Puffs are so Ono.. Ohh, I love it ! Like-Like Drive Inn (next to Tespresso Cafe) was replaced by YogurStory (which used to be in the International Center, with Sorabol (which moved to the old Pagoda restaurant/hotel location). I tried Like-Like Drive Inn (once). The Like-Like crowd vibes were various: large families, kids or middle-aged couples. In Kalihi, there is an actual drive-in restaurant, like Starbucks (in Kaneohe (Bay Shopping Center) or Waipahu (by Seafood City Supermarket & Long's Drugs (now "CVS Pharmacy"): Richie's. I liked Leeward Drive-In, in Waipahu. I haven't been to Forty Niners (the original Aiea location), Wai'oli Tea Room (now Waiʻoli Kitchen and Bake Shop), but I went to small Natsunoya Tea House (Alewa Heights, in the Kalihi area; next to a Hawai'ian graveyard). I remember seeing a King's Bakery; Kamehameha Bakery is cool (City Square Shopping Center; it used to be on North School St. in a two story brick building; there was a hole in the middle; where you could drive a car through; there was also a Chinese restaurant. Now, there is a Rainbow Drive Inn, across from Union 76 gas station). Did you folks remember any of these places, before they got shut down: Ideta's (on Kokea Street, which was next to a bowling alley or a church/now, it a used car lot and a Zippy's (Kapalama Shopping Center); Fritz's European Bakery (it was behind Kapalama Shopping Center); a WingStop fast-food joint had moved in). Kelly's Drive Inn (a bar, restaurant and bakery = now, it's a Harley Davidson/Cycle City; a Wendy's location), (airport side): Byron's Drive Inn (& Chowder House (Ward Warehouse), Chan's Gourmet Buffet (313 North Nimitz Hwy); Gussie L'Amours (nightclub/bar: mud wrestling, rock bands and beers); Hungry Lion restaurant (in the Nuuanu Shopping Center (it is now a Starbucks); Patti's Chinese Chicken, Huckleberry Farms, TCBY Yogurt; the old "Chun Hoon" (Chun Afong) market area); Mama's Mexican Kitchen (on North School Street); Bob's Big Boy (in Mapunapuna; when 99 Ranch Market, Hopaco (office stationary store), Henry Loui's (on Paa St.), Jumbo's & Gibson Shopping Center (Servco Mapunapuna) was there; later, Bob's Big Boy was called Bob's Big Bear (a former Sizzler's location on Dillingham Blvd., close to Boulevard/Dillingham Saimin). (Checker's and Pogo had a TV show filmed at Gibson's Shopping Center with a "Sky Slide" (back in the 1970's); Boulevard/Dillingham Saimin, Waikamilo Drive Inn (it was across from Boulevard Saimin), Wisteria (it is now a 7-11 convenience store on Piikoi St./McCully), Flamingo's Chuckwagon: across from (Neal) Blaisdell Center/"H.I.C." (Hawaii Int'l Center - during my father's days; not Hawaiian Island Creations, one surf/outddors sports store); or Flamingo Kapiolani (cocktails): Budnamujip; now, Million #2 restaurant by a Jack In A Box branch); the Willows (Moiliili; it was on Hausten St.), Yum Yum Tree (Westridge Shopping Center or in town), Monterey Bay Canners, Shakey's Pizza (I went there twice; the Waipahu location; it used to be on Keeaumoku Street ?); Jolly Roger's (in Kalihi = O'Reilly's Auto Parts shop); Kenny's Restaurant/Deli Okazuya ("Kam Bowl" now); Kam Bowl (now a Walgreen's branch; they do have a Kam Bowl "bowling pin" plaque hanging there); Kalihi Bowl too. Other bowling places: Leeward Bowl (there is a bar in there); Aiea Bowl (across the street; there is a Shell gas station and Aiea Medical Building restaurant called Heights Drive Inn (which later closed): In my middle school years, I went there to eat lunch after seeing a dentist above); Pali Lanes (in Kailua: it closed); in the McCully area: Bowl-O-Drome (820 Isenberg Street; it had shut down), it was across from a Chinese restaurant, a First Hawaiian Bank (Moiliili / University) location and a baseball stadium (not the Old (Honolulu) Stadium Park, aka "termite palace." Didn't knew that there was a bowling center in the Fort Shafter area... Did you guys go to "W&M Burger" in Kaimuki area (Waialae Ave.) yet ?; the small mom and pop place, close by a: City Mill, Boston's Pizza Bakery or a Larry's Auto Parts ?; if not, Magoo's Pizza Waikiki (1006 Kapahulu Ave.), Eagle Cafe (Nimitz Business Center), Smith's Union Bar (in Chinatown/WWII 'Pearl Harbor' era) or Anna Miller's (nearby a (Sumida) watercress farm, by Pearlridge (Shopping) Mall/Center ?
I miss Like Like drive inn. After a 3 hr set on stage at Mai Tai's, this was one of our late night spots long with The Hungry Lion. Also, back in High school, my buddy and I would hit up Shiro's Saimin next to Kapiolani Coffee Shop. Then we'd head off to Ice Garden in Aiea. You guys should definitely try it out.
Today I ate at Leeward Drive-in. I got the exact same Saimin and fried chicken that you guys got and it was perfect. Right on! Sending love for you guys 😃
My favorite at Leeward Drive Inn is the hamburger and the fries. The only place I know that has that nostalgic sauce for the hamburger. (Reminds me of Toppers Drive In in Wahiawa which is long gone.) I love the soggy fries, I just wish they had a smaller size because there's one huge bag of fries. Next to Kua Aina's skinny fries, these are my second favorite. (Kalapawai Cafe in Kapolei also has those wonderful skinny fries.)
I'm from Japan. Your RUclips is so interesting that I am watching it everyday. I really like Hawaii. I have never eaten Hawian traditional food. I try to eat it next a trip! I'm so excited to watch next video.
Zippys actually uses Miller's Hot Dogs for Chili Frank. They sell it at Longs and Safeway. Zippys good but expensive. Looking forward to seeing more locations that weren't featured in this vid. I used to go Graces Inn when they were in Aiea, Chicken Katsu no rice extra chow fun with mac salad, kimchi and extra sauce 😋they get one of the best katsu sauces of any of the plate lunch places
I love seeing the old, original places. Standouts from viewing: the waffles with the custard, the lechon, and that very last order! Also, was this one day of eating or five? Lots of rainy day comfort food…😊
Here's an interesting fact. Of the old school establishments you featured, four were started by Okinawans. Sorry Felix, I'm team gravy all ovah. I used to be a ketchup and Tabasco on eggs before sriracha came around. Funny that you guys mentioned McDonald's while talking about soggy fries. Before the the McDonald's opened on the corner of Palolo and Waialae, a little burger takeout place was located in the prior building. It was run by the Trusdale (not sure if that's the correct spelling) family. Anyway, they had really good soggy fries. But then again, I was a little kid way back then. Mahalo for the video!
Thoroughly enjoy watching your videos, Amanda and Felix. Can't wait to visit Hawaii again, but next time, I have to rent a car so I can visit some of the restaurants you guys featured.
Got to have sriracha sauce for rice. There was a place when I was in Honolulu 9 or 10 years ago ran by a Japanese couple called the kuhio coffee shop had great breakfast specials. Probably not there anymore.
Thank you for covering all those places - especially L&L drive-in. I (Scott) grew up in the two story apartment right behind L&L (dairy) in the 60s. Haven’t stopped by the place since (even though my brother still lives on the next block). Thinking of visiting Liliha Bakery next time I go back to Oahu (haven’t eaten there since the 60s though have gotten there coco puffs from the bakery side a few years ago). I was even an assistant manager at Zippy’s in the 80s but only worked at the McCully store while I was a trainee. Thanks for all the good memories! 😊😊😊
Poi sweet, however I grew up on sour because my father liked three day poi...but I took Mom's side on the poi and she liked it fresh. .I will mention that our family lau lau recipe has a big piece of beef, fatty pig on top, and then the salted cod. And that goes back well over 100 years.
When I was in high school (Southern California) we had an assignment to bring foods in that our ancestors would have eaten. I brought poi and haupia. Everyone loved the haupia, the poi not so much. I didn’t blame them, I don’t like poi either. 😄
Kenny's Burger house in Kam shopping center no longer open replace with MacDonalds. The had the best Terry beef sandwich, Suzy Q sandwich, Porky Boy sandwich, and the Strawberry slush float and all their plate lunches was ono! Jolly Roger Drive Inn Waialae Grape slush was also good but also close down. 🥰
What a great idea to swap the rice with fries at L and L for comfort food. Will try that on a rainy day. Thank you for sharing your experiences. My boyfriend and I use you for inspiration when we go on car rides around Oahu.
I'm in Hilo right now. Kens pancake house oxtail stew and tripe stew are ono ono💯🤙😎 Oahu hawaiian restaurants should take notes on tripe stew from Ken's Pancake house in Hilo and Don Quiote's on Oahu. That's how tripe stew should be. Plus, for the price of Ken's pancake house oxtail stew which was 26 dollars, you get monster pieces of oxtail. Id say 6 pieces. Not small tail ends like from zippys, kapiolani coffee shop etc. Just my honest opinion 💯🤙😎
Oh my gosh, all that food ordered from Kapiolani Coffee Shop! I don’t know which to try?! Oxtail soup with rice, fried rice with eggs on top or the lechon kawali. I wish I’m in Oahu right now.
Missing the freshness of the hawaiian foods ! We have it hea at Leilani's Attic in San Diego ! Missing squid luau ! We gotta shop around to get luau leaves ! Yummy Oxtail soup ! I love the specials ! Local Diners Da Best ! Love the Nostalgia ! Mahalo Foodie Ohana !
Aloha. FYI. The original Liliha bakery was located in half of the building makai of the original L&L on Liliha Street before they move to the Kuakini location. ❤ ur videos
I tried to get my visiting Texan nephews to try some local foods at local places😂😂😂the faces they made were hilarious. One nephew did go home hooked on Chili pepper water😂
Good job on old school. Next time in downtown try Ohana Dish (cash only) Tonkatsu is winners. Best donuts at Mr Donut on Union Mall (about to open another branch at the topa building)
Wonderful "scoops" of aloha aina tastes from young 😋 times.... Memories..... "Bon Appetite" ! And I'll save the "cheers" when I am toasting a beverage 😅.... I enjoy your your venue....❤..
Back when I was young and could eat all of that without gaining weight. lol.
Oh yeah, and The Heights in Aiea.. How could I forget to mention them!!
DOTs in Wahiawa!!
Unreal Yu made me rememba!
Rememba da old Pearl City Tavern wit da small animal zoo in there & the bonsai garden 😲😃
King's Bakery, Jolly Roger's, Columbia Inn, and Grace's! Wow, that brought back good memories! 😋 Used to love Yum Yum Tree for breakfast too!
Also, KC Drive In, Tanoue’s, Wongs Okazuya, Poi Bowl, Boulevard Saimin
These places are so nostalgic. How awesome that they are still in business. Thank you for the video. Blessings and take care. 💖💖🙏🌺💖💖
We're happy that they're still around! 🙏 hopefully for many more generations! Mahalo Patricia! 🙏🤙

My favorite is Grace’s Drive Inn. I usually order mochiko chicken with gravy all over, extra bed of chow fun and extra kim chee
How nostalgic!
Today I ate at Leeward Drive-in. I got the exact same Saimin and fried chicken that you guys got and it was perfect. Right on! Sending love for you guys 😃
Four animals on a fluffy bed of cabbage ! Chicken, Fish, Cow, Spam !
Happy birthday, Amanda 🎉. World travelers.
Mahalo Walt! 🤙
I’m with you and really miss Like Like Drive Inn too!
🙌🙌
I ended up going here today based on your recommendation. (Flew in from Seattle) Wow, best oxtail soup ever. Thank you!
Great video. Keep it up!
Mahalo! 🤙
Leeward drive in: Teri beef and fried noodles!!!!🍜
Love rainbow, I will always go back to that place and I really miss Hawaii.. I wish I can work and live there.. But I will visit again..
I'm from Japan.
Your RUclips is so interesting that I am watching it everyday.
I really like Hawaii.
I have never eaten Hawian traditional food.
I try to eat it next a trip!
I'm so excited to watch next video.
Best restaurant EVER!!!!
👍
That L&L order at the end is awesome!
Gotta try em! 👍
@@AmandaFelixEats That didn't look like their regular katsu sauce on the chicken. Did you get it with gravy instead?
Town & country tee shirts are the bestest
Who remembers the waffle hotdog and ono ono shake commercials with Frank Delima.
the KC Drive Inn Ono Ono shake was sooooo good!
Gravy all over and ALWAYS a slush float! 🤙
I miss Burgerland in Kapahulu on Monsarrat and Nakatani’s Drive-In in Nanakuli
I love seeing the old, original places. Standouts from viewing: the waffles with the custard, the lechon, and that very last order! Also, was this one day of eating or five? Lots of rainy day comfort food…😊
Plenty grinds!
Mahalo! 🤙
You need to use the mayo mustard sauce for the fries
All the food looks so good can’t wait to be in Oahu at the end of August
A Zippy's review, finally!
I want a zip pac
Thoroughly enjoy watching your videos, Amanda and Felix. Can't wait to visit Hawaii again, but next time, I have to rent a car so I can visit some of the restaurants you guys featured.
Got to have sriracha sauce for rice. There was a place when I was in Honolulu 9 or 10 years ago ran by a Japanese couple called the kuhio coffee shop had great breakfast specials. Probably not there anymore.
My mom's coworker recognized Felix and his sister when she was watching a video! Apparently the coworker went to the same high school!
Poi is a must. My step daughter can live off poi along with my mom. I love poi with poke, lomi salmon
Also everyone I watch you guys. I get hungry and end up going out to A’i or kaukau
Love it
Thank you for covering all those places - especially L&L drive-in. 😊😊😊
Mahalo for joining us! 🤙
Old School...research Tenny Tavern (hamurger steak, veal cutlets. green river with nibbits. Country Inn (fried noodles friend rice and cheeseburger.)
Been waiting for this one for some time.
I always love to order the mixed plate at rainbow drive in with teriyaki sauce all over
Poi sweet, however I grew up on sour because my father liked three day poi...but I took Mom's side on the poi and she liked it fresh. .I will mention that our family lau lau recipe has a big piece of beef, fatty pig on top, and then the salted cod. And that goes back well over 100 years.
That sounds like a great lau lau!
When I was in high school (Southern California) we had an assignment to bring foods in that our ancestors would have eaten. I brought poi and haupia. Everyone loved the haupia, the poi not so much. I didn’t blame them, I don’t like poi either. 😄
I like Tonkatsu sauce on the eggs & fried rice; and I often use a bit of tonkatsu sauce when I make my own fried rice.
That sounds good! 👌
Interesting! Thanks for sharing Amanda! Mahalo, peace out.
Team early. Love you guys ❤🤙
Mahalo! 🙌🤙
Good night from Papua New Guinea. I enjoyed watching your contents
St louis drive in great beef cutlet add extra gravy yummy
Kenny's Burger house in Kam shopping center no longer open replace with MacDonalds. The had the best Terry beef sandwich, Suzy Q sandwich, Porky Boy sandwich, and the Strawberry slush float and all their plate lunches was ono! Jolly Roger Drive Inn Waialae Grape slush was also good but also close down. 🥰
How nostalgic!
What a great idea to swap the rice with fries at L and L for comfort food. Will try that on a rainy day. Thank you for sharing your experiences. My boyfriend and I use you for inspiration when we go on car rides around Oahu.
Mahalo! 🤙
When my husband and I were first dating in the early 60's, he would take me to Like Like Drive Inn (and Sekia's restaurant)
How nostalgic! 🤙
Leeward Drive Inn’s cheeseburger is like the old Byron Drive Inn’s cheeseburger. That nostalgic mayo mustard sauce. 🤙🏼
I'm in Hilo right now. Kens pancake house oxtail stew and tripe stew are ono ono💯🤙😎
Oahu hawaiian restaurants should take notes on tripe stew from Ken's Pancake house in Hilo and Don Quiote's on Oahu.
That's how it should be! 👍
Ken's House of Pancakes in Hilo = if you know, you know; Winnah Winnah, Chicken Dinner !
Those St. Louis meals looks way better than the meal from Rainbow. More bang for the buck. Great food.
Oh my gosh, all that food ordered from Kapiolani Coffee Shop! I don’t know which to try?! Oxtail soup with rice, fried rice with eggs on top or the lechon kawali. I wish I’m in Oahu right now.
It was ono!
Everything looks Ono 👍
Missing the freshness of the hawaiian foods ! We have it hea at Leilani's Attic in San Diego ! Missing squid luau ! We gotta shop around to get luau leaves ! Yummy Oxtail soup ! I love the specials ! Local Diners Da Best ! Love the Nostalgia ! Mahalo Foodie Ohana !

Sounds like a great breakfast burger!
@@AmandaFelixEats it was! i want another one! i should make my own....
Boulevard Saimin, Yakiniku House Osaka, Chacos, Coral Reef
Aloha. FYI. The original Liliha bakery was located in half of the building makai of the original L&L on Liliha Street before they move to the Kuakini location. ❤ ur videos
Mahalo! 🤙
Ono nostalgia! Hey, Da Von!
I tried to get my visiting Texan nephews to try some local foods at local places😂😂😂the faces they made were hilarious.
One nephew did go home hooked on Chili pepper water😂
I hungry again. Was at Liliha Bakery this morning after dropping off my car at the shop. I am going try that cheeseburger deluxe next time.
Burgers are ono! 👍
Good job on old school. Next time in downtown try Ohana Dish (cash only) Tonkatsu is winners. Best donuts at Mr Donut on Union Mall (about to open another branch at the topa building)
Can you imagine a day when you can take the rail from your condo straight to Highway inn Waipahu!!
😮
Haven’t seen you guys in a minute and both of y’all look incredible! A diet transformation I assume🫡
