Big Wave - better than the OG Giovanni's, sorry. It has a side salad with pineapple, very garlicy, and love it's served over the rice to catch all the flavors. The shrimp is plump and bigger when we did same comparison you guys did, but we put all of them next to each other. Thanks for this recap though, solidified our decision that Big Wave was our #1.
its great that you guys are quantifying why you like each place instead of using meaningless generic terms like "nice" to describe the food. keep up the good work!
Not sure anyone has posted but Fumi’s changed their name to Tanaka and moved just 100 yards north on Kam Hwy where there is a few buildings with other stores - loved this episode ❤
Fumi's May have changed their name to Tanaka's coz, back in da day, the building was originally H.Tanaka Store, back when Kahuku Sugar Mill was up & running. Maybe, somebody that was brought up in/around Kahuku around that time, can shed more light?!..BTW...Felix might be spoiled in his preference chili spicy hot more than Tabasco-type hot coz of Viet(?) background?!...Not really big fan of garlic shrimp but, after watching you guys, taste sampling might be on the horizon?!-lol...Keep these videos coming
I came here to comment this! Had Tanaka’s two weeks ago after initially freaking out that Fumi’s (my personal fave North Shore shrimp) was closed and found a bunch of Yelp comments saying Tanaka’s was the same business. Just as delicious and amazing as ever, but the new storefront is SUPER efficient, clean, and they even had a musician playing on a small stage! 5 STARS!
I’m so happy you guys chose Giovanni’s. When I went to Hawaii last time I went there and was raving about how amazing the garlic shrimp was and my friend who is from Hawaii and still has family there told me that there’s better places. She didn’t say where but nonetheless I felt totally invalidated. But now I have been redeemed! 😂😂😂 I knew it!!! It was divine. I even ate the lemon with the skin on because it was cooked in that garlic butter sauce. 😅😅😅 It was that good!
Hi cutest couple on RUclips! Loved this video with DaVon! So much garlic goodness to pick from! Hard to pick cuz I haven't tried them all. So I'll follow your lead.. your the best food critics in Hawaii!🎉❤️
I made my very first trip to Hawaii 6 mths ago. I directed the family to Giovanni's due to a previous video. OMG!!! The first bite of Shrimp Scampi sent me to Heaven! The garlic was like 'addicting,' and I've never felt that way. I was so disappointed that I didn't get another plate. You two have steered me in the right direction when it comes to Hawaiian cuisine. Thanks, and I wish you many years of love, happiness, and good eating. Hope to see you on my next trip, if I'm lucky! 😊
I’m glad to see others raving about Aloha shrimp. I know I’ve recommended it to you before. Last time we were there, in addition to their garlic shrimp, we got the coconut shrimp which was the best ivevever had. Mahalo for another great video🫶
Amanda and Felix, I love your videos of Hawaiian eats! It's so enjoyable to watch and looking forward to try all the spots you two have reviewed on my next trip to Hawaii! New subscriber here!
I was all about Giovanni’s and then I tried Jenny’s and now they’re my number 1! Garlic butter and spicy both so ono! Thanks for the video! I gotta try kahuku famous now!
Another 🔥& 💣video from the ONE and ONLY AMANDA&FELIX! Chee thank You for another great and amazing video on Garlic Shkrimps!! Blessings on Blessing’s to You both!!!
We visited Oahu for the first time last September & found a shrimp truck in Heeia near the Byodo temple. It’s called Nome Ono & we really loved it!! It had a spicy sauce but it was mellowed out by what was probably coconut milk. It was definitely off the beaten path & seemed to be mostly locals there. BTW we used a lot of your tips when we visited! We love watching you!!!
Y’all really should have had Aloha Shrimp in the mix. The variety and the flavors makes it the Shrimp Truck that we take all over visiting friends and family from the mainland.
Giovanni's for me (I would like it if they added the amount of garlic sauce that Kahuku's does), Kahuku's spicy for the gf, but I bet she'd like Honos spicy, need to try that. Have had bad luck every time I've tried to have Fumi's & Romy's, closed or out of what I wanted. Side note, Giovanni's sells a garlic hot dog where they cover it with the garlic sauce which was great! Thanks for being detailed with flavors and counting the shrimp!
Aloha Shrimp in Hauula. I'm a local born and raised. LOVE my seafood! Have done many travels to try all the shrimp trucks. They may not use real kahuku shrimp (most don't). But they sell the BEST spicy shrimp on the Island, their regular garlic shrimp is still better than the other options... Highest rated on yelp, for a reason. Don't sleep on Aloha Shrimp!!!! Try em, then tell me I'm wrong. Bet!
Guys. This is the best one. Other RUclipsrs should benchmark this one. Instead of just saying oh this is so good, you set the selection categories upfront and clearly communicated. Thanks!
Enjoyed the video. Was hoping y’all included aloha shrimp truck. That was one of our favorites. Let me know your thoughts on aloha shrimp. Can’t wait to go back to Oahu on the fall.
We did a similar tasting tour like yours years ago but we also tried the garlic shrimp at Ted’s Bakery too. Our result … go not pass go, do not collect $200, and go straight to Giovanni’s! And no need to go all the way to the North Shore to get that fix - We stay in town and go to the Giovanni’s at HMart (about a mile from the Ala Moana Center) instead. Free garaged parking, air conditioned food court, clean tables/chairs/restrooms, and no critters and flies to swat!
Happy Lunes Foodie Ohana! 🧄 🍤 🚐 episode. Thank you for doing this episode not just because I love garlic shrimp but because you guys uncover the “secrets” behind the preparation and taste of each establishment. Your episode gives me tips on how to adjust and tweak my personal recipe. I appreciate your honesty and willingness to go deep not just surface level. Love you guys! 🤙🏽❤️🧄🍤🌴
Yay, another "best of" episode! I only wish it had been available a week ago, as I had a visitor and took them out to North Shore to try the shrimp truck experience (as well as big waves and shave ice, naturally!). I did some research and finally decided on Hono's. We did enjoy both the regular garlic and spicy garlic shrimp, but that was my first time too (I know, shame for a local grrl! 🤣) so I have nothing to compare it to. Now that I have your excellent review I will surely go back and try some others. Thanks as always for your excellent videos, can't wait till the next one! 😍
Just by watching the video, Big Wave and Hono's looked good to me, but I'm not surprised Giovanni's won. I've seen them featured in so many other videos. Last year when I went to Maui and Kauai, I had garlic shrimp at The Shrimp Station in Waimea on Kauai. It's located on a very busy street and makes a great stop after visiting the canyon.
Aloha, Amanda & Felix...I loved this Garlic Shrimp Series. It was very informative, just like the Loco Moco episode. Great job. My personal opinion is that Giovanni's has the best Garlic Flavor. A big bonus is the garlic flavor on the rice. I never tried HONO and glad you put this place on the episode. I did see on the Hono menu that they had a pineapple shrimp (sweet & sour) which I am eager to try. Fyi, Kau Kau Grill in mapunapuna has a garlic shrimp that is done with Olive Oil and not butter for a healthier version. May I recommend doing a Mac Salad Series? Big controversy on Frolic now regarding the Best Mac Salad. Just a suggestion. Have an awesome day.
Guys, all of the shrimp lunches looked awesome! Here in Okinawa, garlic chicken is popular. We have some places that serve excellent garlic chicken I highly recommend you guys come to Okinawa on your next Japan trip!
I love my garlic shrimp with the shell on. I especially like mines crunchy. My go to place use to be L&L in Iwilei next to Costco. Their garlic shrimp was so flavorful, not greasy, nice and crunchy and I left no evidence on my plate!!! I don’t work that side anymore 😢. Fun video! Thank you for the all the reviews 👍🏼👍🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼. Such foodie worriors 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼 I’m definately gonna try Romy’s!! Thanks for the great tips 🤙🏼
This is my husband and my bucket list thing to do! We also loved Giovanni for the strong garlic flavor but we thought honos had the better shrimp quality and we loved the spicy garlic shrimp there! Have to try Kahuku when we go back
Hey Guys! Was out there about a year ago and ate garlic shrimp at the truck next to Hono's. I think it was Giovannis unless its different now? I didn't know there were so many other places to try. Thanks for showing all the good spots for grindz! 😁 The bloopers are the best! Thanks for keeping them in. (Also, look at Felix getting them points... "Keep your eye on the prize!" I see you bro. 😄👍
My favorite place for garlic shrimp no longer exists. It was a restaurant in Oak Harbor, named Zorba's. My mouth is watering just thinking of it. Yvonne didn't have much to say, but it was great seeing her again.
Romy's & Giovanni's but been wanting to try Da Bald Guy since I saw them on Living808. Best of Garlic Chicken & Shave ice or did you guys did those yet lol
Team Romy's because once in a while they actually have prawns, not simply just the regular shrimps! And it tastes fresh! My favorite would probably be Kauai Shrimp, cooked at home.
Leonards and Giovanni was the highlight of my trip, foodwise, in Hawaii lol though to be honest the Giovanni at the Hmart in Honolulu had way more kick to it than the ones on the North Shore. But regardless this video makes me miss it all lol
Pretty spot on. The only reason I prefer Kahuku Famous sometimes id because I like to get the combo with garlic shrimp and spicy squid, or garlic shrimp and steak. TEds Bakery garlic shrimp is pretty legit too.,
Delicious Garlic Shrimp Vlogs ! Aloha Da Von ! We love Giovanni's ! It is a family time road trip when we visit "Home " ! Mahalo Foodie Ohana for sharing !
I know TEDS BAKERY is mostly known for their pies but DO NOT sleep on their spicy garlic shrimp. 🍤 I literally dream about it 🤤💕 As far as those food trucks go, absolutely YES on Famous Kahuku Shrimp and Jenny’s! 😋👍🏻 But i still, for myself, prefer Ted’s Bakery’s spicy garlic shrimp. Has anyone else tried?
A couple years ago I did a side by side comparison of Fumis & Giovanni's, Fumis being a local favorite and Giovanni's a tourist favorite. Fumis shrimp were bigger and fresher tasting with corn and pineapple. Giovanni's had more garlic flavor, but not as buttery. The shrimp were a little bit rubbery and the rice was a little mushy. All-in-all Fumis was my favorite, but I love buttery garlic shrimp no matter where I can get them! Thank you Amanda & Felix for showing me more places to try!
Dang too bad you didn’t get to try Romy’s. I think they have the best garlic shrimp hands down! If you love garlic, they pack on the most garlic. It’s hand cut garlic deep fried to perfection 😮💨😮💨😮💨
Great review as always. I have a stupid question. Can you order the shrimp without the shells on? I don't think I could handle eating the shells. And it seems like all of the sauce would be gone if you had them served shells on, and all the sauce would be gone once you take the shells off.
Last time Judy and I ate garlic shrimp in the North Shore was at Mackey’s Shrimp Truck. We thought it was good…I think it’s gone now. Have you tried Giovanni’s at the H-Mart food court? Wonder if it’s the same as the truck.
I think the places with weak garlic flavor likely used pre-peeled or pre-minced garlic from a jar. Those garlic tend to be less pungent vs fresh garlic.
Love the back to back comparisons and why! And you brought DaVonne to help judge the plates. Always enjoy the bloopers at the end as well. Plus, Haleiwa!💕💕 pro tips from Felix always appreciated 😉👍🏿😀 Great job!
About 10 years ago, the Honolulu Reader maybe, rated the best Oahu shrimp truck WITHOUT FLIES. Mikes in Kaneohe won. I think they’re still there. For you guys, who had the best garlic shrimp without flies.
Epic Showdown with Da Vonne. Not a huge fan of garlic shrimp. Sorry! But the whole prawns looked so delicious and fresh, I would love to get that plate or go to Cajun Kings in Waimalu for their seafood boils.
Like#690 I barely comment on the videos cuz I watch every video on my tv…but I just had to come on and comment on this cuz SHRIMP ON SHRIMP ON SHRIMP!!! 🤤😋 Romy’s is my favorite, but whoa they have a shrimp truck now?! What happened to their building? Was it taken down? That’s how long I haven’t gone there. I think it was 2 years ago now
@@AmandaFelixEats You’re welcome ☺️ Oh yeah maybe. Hate seeing changes happen especially when you haven’t gone in a while. Can’t wait to explore that side soon! Waiting on baby to come first 😁
If you look carefully, it looks like the garlic they use in Honos comes from the big jar you see at Costco that’s why it’s not as garlicky. The look perfectly squared.
Thanks #AmandaFelixEats for TOFTT (Taking One For The Team) ! Driving around hitting all those 6 spots . All that garlic and spice probably took at least a full day or two to leave your system .(lol)
I just watched your poke video, I used to live in Maui but now live in Alaska I went to our Asian store poke is 12.99 a pound. Why is Hawaii poke more expensive they actually get ahi from there?
Suspect high fish prices is fish are bought Fresh of the Boat from United Fishing Agency fish auction @ Pier 38. Checkout Michelle & José food & travel. One of their latest videos went to fish auction... Interesting!
We hope you all are enjoyng this BEST OF GARLIC SHRIMP episode! Let us know your favorite place to get Garlic Shrimp 🦐
My fave is Romy’s, but I gotta try Famous Kahuku’s and Hono’s too now
Can’t beat the fresh prawns
Would love for you to try Da Bald Guys shrimp, my favorite!
its great that you guys are quantifying why you like each place instead of using meaningless generic terms like "nice" to describe the food. keep up the good work!
Mahalo Holly! 🤙
You're gonna hit 50K really soon! Love you guys!
Can’t wait🎉🎉🎉 mahalo captain Geo!
You guys are the best! Definitely my go to sources for dining around Oahu 🤙🏼 I feel locals always know best!
Not sure anyone has posted but Fumi’s changed their name to Tanaka and moved just 100 yards north on Kam Hwy where there is a few buildings with other stores - loved this episode ❤

I don't like shrimp, but I love watching you two eat.
We loved the shrimp from Da Bald Guy. We liked Giovanni’s and Jenny’s as well. Yum!!
We love the bald guy too! 👍

Mahalo for the support! 🙏🤙
Excellent video! I love shrimp! Thank you for sharing 😊
Our favorite was Geste Shrimp over on Maui. Delicious!!! I thought Giovanni’s was nothing special and tasted like what I can make at home.
Gosh, it's been 20+ years since I've had Giovannis shrimp. I still remember the garlic aroma. Yummy!
Nostalgic!
Giovanni's for me (I would like it if they added the amount of garlic sauce that Kahuku's does), Kahuku's spicy for the gf, but I bet she'd like Honos spicy, need to try that. So glad we could show more spots and variations of garlic shrimp! We definitely gotta go back for the hot dog 🌭 mahalo!🤙🏻
I agree w you guys picks!! Thank you for a great video!!
Yay!! Glad you enjoyed this one🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻

I think Roma’s spicy sweet is my favorite. Drench the rice n shrimp with that sauce ! Woooo!

Enjoyed the video. Was hoping y’all included aloha shrimp truck. That was one of our favorites. Let me know your thoughts on aloha shrimp. Can’t wait to go back to Oahu on the fall.

Love Teds Bakery spicy garlic shrimp 🤤 with side of shoyu chicken and kalbi 😂
Sounds good!

Tanaka Shrimp (Formerly Fumi’s) so so so good! Wishing I could hop up to the N Shore for a plate right now!
Yay, another "best of" episode! I only wish it had been available a week ago, as I had a visitor and took them out to North Shore to try the shrimp truck experience (as well as big waves and shave ice, naturally!). We need to try it there! 🤙
You gotta try Romy’s og garlic shrimp. Their garlic is carmelized sooo good and unique
We need to go back for that!
Great episode I wish Fumi’s was open to get your take on them I like it my wife loves Giovanni’s
Would love to do a Mac salad episode! We gotta try the shrimp at kau kau next time! Mahalo Rick! 🤙
Famous Kahuku Shrimp is my favorite, too!
So good! 🙌
For me, it's all about shrimp. Romy's is my favorite. The shrimp is fresh and sweet. My family shares the one pound steamed. Made to order.
The freshest! 👍
Guys, all of the shrimp lunches looked awesome! Here in Okinawa, garlic chicken is popular. We have some places that serve excellent garlic chicken I highly recommend you guys come to Okinawa on your next Japan trip!
We love garlic chicken!
I'm a shell on, head on guy. The head get da best flavah!!🤙

Romy prawns are so fresh! 👍
Hey Guys! Was out there about a year ago and ate garlic shrimp at the truck next to Hono's. I think it was Giovannis unless its different now? I didn't know there were so many other places to try. Thanks for showing all the good spots for grindz! 😁

Thanks for the rec🙌🏼 we haven’t done it yet, but def on our list 🤙🏻
Kahuku shrimp truck is my favorite. Good to see Davon. Thanks for driving out there. BTW did you get the fried chicken in Kahuku to eat later?
We were too full unfortunately 😭
Team Romy's!
We hope we can go back!🦐
Let's get it Foodie Ohana!!!! The North Shore knows how to do it. Some trucks are overrated. I'm not saying any names. LOL
We know! 😅
@AmandaFelixEats I've been there and done that. I can say it was a hot, sloppy mess. Not enough napkins for all that drama. 😂🤣😅
Team Romy's because once in a while they actually have prawns, not simply just the regular shrimps! And it tastes fresh! My favorite would probably be Kauai Shrimp, cooked at home.
Fresh prawns!
Leonards and Giovanni was the highlight of my trip, foodwise, in Hawaii lol though to be honest the Giovanni at the Hmart in Honolulu had way more kick to it than the ones on the North Shore. But regardless this video makes me miss it all lol
That's a perfect combo!
Pretty spot on. The only reason I prefer Kahuku Famous sometimes id because I like to get the combo with garlic shrimp and spicy squid, or garlic shrimp and steak. TEds Bakery garlic shrimp is pretty legit too.,
We need to head to Ted's! 🤙
We need to head to Ted's! 🤙
If you can one day try Ted’s for the Garlic shrimp, spicy too, would love to see how they compare 🤙😎
Will do! 🤙
Jenny's shrimp truck is my favorite! I don't care what no one says 😊
Jenny's is great! 👍
Delicious Garlic Shrimp Vlogs ! Aloha Da Von ! We love Giovanni's ! It is a family time road trip when we visit "Home " ! Mahalo Foodie Ohana for sharing !
Mahalo Gail! 🤙
Hi Amanda & Felix HRU"ll ? Luv watching yr mouth watering yummy delicious food luv fm India ❤️❤️❤️
Mahalo Maria 🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻
For me, I enjoy Giovanni's Garlic/Butter Shrimp with the hot sauce on the side to dip the shrimp just a little bit....Oh Yeah!
Will get the hot sauce on the side next time! 🤙
Im a Romys guy myself..but I havent been there since 2018 ....you gotta go back and get the real plate..great vid...
For sure!
We haven't tried their shrimp yet! For sure next trip! 🤙
We recommend kahuku famous shrimp! One of our personal favorites! 👍
Dang too bad you didn’t get to try Romy’s. I think they have the best garlic shrimp hands down! If you love garlic, they pack on the most garlic. It’s hand cut garlic deep fried to perfection 😮💨😮💨😮💨
Giovanni's is also at kakaako above the hmart
Giovanni’s is good but the soggy rice always gets me. Love Romy’s but the wait sucks. Fumi’s is a great in between.
Great review as always. I have a stupid question. Can you order the shrimp without the shells on? I don't think I could handle eating the shells. And it seems like all of the sauce would be gone if you had them served shells on, and all the sauce would be gone once you take the shells off.
Unfortunately you can't order them without the shell. There are places like Da bald guy food truck that does garlic shrimp without the shell 👍
Last time Judy and I ate garlic shrimp in the North Shore was at Mackey’s Shrimp Truck. We thought it was good…I think it’s gone now.
Have you tried Giovanni’s at the H-Mart food court? Wonder if it’s the same as the truck.
Wow that’s a blast from the past 🥲 lol nooo~ We haven’t tried the Giovanni’s at Hmart🤔
Another great one! Giovani’s and Hono’s! Romy’s is at a different level because it’s a full head on prawn.
So fresh!
Just found out Fumis is now Tanaka Kahuku shrimp! I wanted to like Romys so bad but they burned the garlic last time I was there.
Omg!! We drove by too 😫 mahalo for letting us know!
I love the Garlic shrimps in the. North Shore. Just curious, how does Felix have time to visit all these culinary places, esp with a full time job.
We try to plan our filming days around his days off 👍
Kahuku famous shrimp truck is the one!
i need some garlic shrimp!
So good! 🤤
Ted’s has the best garlic shrimp, plus it comes with pie🤙🏾🤙🏾
Will feature them soon! 🤙
I think the places with weak garlic flavor likely used pre-peeled or pre-minced garlic from a jar. Those garlic tend to be less pungent vs fresh garlic.
Jenny’s food truck and Big Wave for us!
🙌
Love the back to back comparisons and why! And you brought DaVonne to help judge the plates. Always enjoy the bloopers at the end as well. Plus, Haleiwa!💕💕 pro tips from Felix always appreciated 😉👍🏿😀 Great job!
Mahalo for joining us! 🙏🤙
Fumis will always be my number 1
So sad they closed! 😭
I'll try this weekend to goivanni shrimp truck
We hope you enjoy! 🤙
Just got here! #1!
You got it! 🙌🤙
About 10 years ago, the Honolulu Reader maybe, rated the best Oahu shrimp truck WITHOUT FLIES. Mikes in Kaneohe won. I think they’re still there. For you guys, who had the best garlic shrimp without flies.
Sounds good! We'll give them a try! 🤙
Epic Showdown with Da Vonne. Not a huge fan of garlic shrimp. Sorry! But the whole prawns looked so delicious and fresh, I would love to get that plate or go to Cajun Kings in Waimalu for their seafood boils.
You would love romy's! Their prawns are fresh! 👍
My first shrimp truck was Giovannis. But I also like the Garlic Shrimp from Ted's Bakery. Is it not good in your opinion?
We didn't have time to feature them in this video but maybe on the next! 👍
got teased about that sushi buffet >:/
Coming soon!!!🥹
You can get Giovanni's in town at HMART. Romy's hands down the best but too bad it was sold out.
We gotta go back next time!
Might not be North Shore, but prawns at Kualoa Ranch are high quality.
Aloha Shrimp Truck is my favorite! They are super underrated
We will try them next! 👍
WE WANT THE OLD FUMIS!! 😂😂
Yes! 😭
A total shrimp fest! I cook sweet and sour shrimp. I would love all these trucks' secret garlic shrimp recipes. Thank you for sharing.

I barely comment on the videos cuz I watch every video on my tv…but I just had to come on and comment on this cuz SHRIMP ON SHRIMP ON SHRIMP!!! 🤤😋
Romy’s is my favorite, but whoa they have a shrimp truck now?! What happened to their building? Was it taken down? That’s how long I haven’t gone there. I think it was 2 years ago now
Maybe since covid? Not sure either.. so much change on that side! 😭 Mahalo for commenting! 🤙
@@AmandaFelixEats You’re welcome ☺️ Oh yeah maybe. Hate seeing changes happen especially when you haven’t gone in a while. Can’t wait to explore that side soon! Waiting on baby to come first 😁
Love the bloopers😂
😂👍
Aloha guys! I hope married life is treating you well 🙂all the shrimp that you both had were huge! I love garlic shrimp it's the best.
We’re doing well much mahaloz Ange🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻
Been waiting for this since the live stream tease, mmmmm yummy!
We hope you enjoyed it! 🤙
Da Bald Guy garlic shrimp is delicious and the best I had on the island. The shrimps are peeled.
Theirs is bomb too!
If you look carefully, it looks like the garlic they use in Honos comes from the big jar you see at Costco that’s why it’s not as garlicky. The look perfectly squared.
Seems like it could be!
Thanks #AmandaFelixEats for TOFTT (Taking One For The Team) ! Driving around hitting all those 6 spots . All that garlic and spice probably took at least a full day or two to leave your system .(lol)
You are so welcome! Much mahalo🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻
i've only tried romy's and giovanni's. wasn't many more options back then. both broke da mouth. shell on mo bettah.
Extra flavor! 👍
Prices of fish had been going up due to high demand and scarcity unfortunately 😭
