It's worth noting- Lazy is VERY MUCH SO a perfectionist. He sees that the characters in the original clips that the SFM is based on, and if something is off? He didn't do it right. And credit where it's due, the commitment to the accuracy is a big part of what makes it so impressive. It's something he personally is very proud of. In addition- If he didn't put in the work to fix these minor mistakes? He would've gone through beating himself up immensely over the fear that he let folks down by providing inaccurate details, especially one that obvious. I personally think the most obvious instance of this is the joke he makes about the Engineer not wearing the Gunslinger in a Combat Engineer clip. Whether he beat himself up over this or not? Not sure. But it's worth noting. In addition, it seems he has gotten better with making the process more efficient over time, and handling the issues in a healthier manner. It's also worth noting he likely played up his feelings on the process for the sake of humor. I hope. I at least know that since this video he has gone through getting mental health help. I genuinely hope he's doing alright.
Honestly, even if you aren't a perfectionist, going through the effort of working with a program that has all of these weird quirks and glitches would be annoying as hell. Especially when going through the learning process.
There's one creepypasta I lost due to time, I would love to know its name and read it again... It was about a guy playing animal crossing new leaf and went online, finding a random guy and playing with him. Everyday he entered the guy changed the town, and it gets creepy and sad, as the protagonist realizes the guy is going through a lot of personal issues and representing them in game is the way to cope, accept and work his issues out. My favorite for being one that is simple, could happen in any media, and could happen in real life too.
Actually, a purple Grizzled Growth is part of LazyPurple's branding. He absolutely can't just get rid of it, at this point. It'd be like if you came on here with a tan and a blonde mullet; your current look's great, no need to change it!
Yep, the "LazyPurple" look is an iconic loadout for years at this point, just like Uncle Dane's Engineer loadout, or BigJoey's and Bearded Expense's respective Heavy loadouts.
What he encountered with the laser is what can be called "Curse of the Perfectionist". EDIT: Most if these problems, which you say he could've avoided easily, are problems not of an animator, but if an artist. As an artist, and perfectionist at that, he *WANTS* to use the _RED_ laser and _THAT SPECIFIC BEARD_ because he's an artist and he has a _specific_ scene to make(recreate).
To be fair, this software is pretty old, I believe it's older than TF2 including it's alpha stage. It was used to film the meet the team series as well as the map videos in the game. SFM is old and probably has it's own version of spaghetti code that makes no sense, once you learn it's weird rules and can work around those rules it is a fantastic way to animate for aesthetic if not speed. Many will surrender and go to Blender or even fight with Gmod because SFM is like a mule, stubborn and hard to get working on what you want.
It's... not that easy to just... not bother with things that we feel are required, especially in projects we're passionate about, even if they cause ungodly headaches to fix. Also, it's worth pointing out, _even_ if LazyPurple didn't care about accurately representing a player's model in an SFM animation, there _would've_ been people commenting 'hey why doesn't that pyro have any hats' 'lol lazypurple forgot to add beards' 'this scene is ruined because lazy was lazy' Maybe it's because Lazy has set a precedent in how far he goes with his animations, but he unfortunately does have a very high standard to live up to, and anything below that will just feel cheap.
Lazy cant take out the cosmetics because its a recreation of the game scene, so it would be a very obvious inconsistency as he plays the real clip right after
At this point I have found that Blender, yes, the 3D mega-suite with everything and the kitchen sink in it Blender, is actively *EASIER TO USE* than SFM. Why is the ultimate, almost industry standard software for 3D modeling with an overwhelming amount of features easier to use than the dedicated animation program?
Compare the Blender of 2009 to SFM from 2009 and they line up pretty adequately. SFM's last "update" was 2015, and the software stopped having proper feature updates in 2013, while Blender receives major updates once every four months.
From the source code of TF2 itself: "I don't know why, I don't want to know why, I shouldn't have to wonder why, but for whatever reason this stupid panel isn't laying out correctly unless we do this terribleness." "THIS SHIT DOESN'T WORK!! WHY? HAS I EVER?" "This is the easiest way to refresh the goals after switching the maps. todo This is dumb."" "This isn't particularly efficient. Too bad!"
"It has no face" is my favorite creepypasta, its way old but its just good. Its cold got great atmosphere, an ambiguous monster you don't know the nature of. Best of all they don't explain EVERYTHING, if you explain all your monster you take away its mystique.
Bad software = true terror in the thumbnail. Trust me paul, you have not seen anything. dead ringer spies make you feel true pain. Keep up the good work! Love the content.
Source Filmmaker is so terrible because Valve only intended to use it to animate the meet the team videos and various other cinematics for their games, they just made it as bare bones as they could to achieve what they wanted. They just released it on Steam for no other reason than to let us play around with it. It was never designed to be that streamlined for anything, they just knew the dedication their fans had and figured they would be able to make some good stuff with it (turns out they were right, though at the cost of thousands of hours of suffering for those creators lol)
17:56 Sometimes it has to be that way. Often you don't have the resources of time and money to teach everyone everything. Doing so would also be extremely inefficient and you're better off having specialisations so everyone's working off a need to know basis. But like you said that can be dangerous when people are doing stuff because they're told bad things will happen if they don't.
4:40 Using the cordinate system as the equalent for colour values. Both keep track of 3 values, so why not have it pull double duty? Just going through how I imagine the though process in the design phase was. 8:13 I say that it still beats using the game Garry's Mod for finer animation. If you remember Team Fabulous 2, that was animated with Garry's Mod. Personally not a fan of the quirky animation. 17:40 "Killing" off the fire entities as well as whatever enviromantal lightglow is runing about. A little bit of studying game programing helps in understanding some of the yargin. Atleast what some sorting systems shorten names to.
Man. I remember the time I met LazyPurple ingame. It was when Faceit, a now-less popular semi-competitive TF2 matchmaking service dropped. I knew it was really him, as he was given early registration, and the server uses your Faceit account name, it couldn't not have been him. I was on his team on Badwater. I believe he played Sniper? Maybe Spy. It was a while back. We didn't really chat, as he was just playing the game and hanging out. It was so cool seeing him just.. Do things. I still smile remembering him say that he was happy he didn't mute chat, as he would've missed our messages if he did. Albeit I do hope I wasn't too much of an annoying fan, as I was VERY excited. I also met B4NNY, the guy generally agreed to be the best overall TF2 player. It was cool, but it was less popping off to meet an inspiration to me, but rather trying to keep up with him when he played at ridiculous speeds. Thank goodness I was on his team, as frankly we absolutely stomped with him present. I even remember him playing to subtly condition the other team by just locking down certain areas perfectly. He made my life a breeze that game.
To be fair, the issue with source film maker is mostly spaghetti code (spaghetti code for the uninitiated is unstructured source code, it can not only result in this, but also make reading code to patch an issue or understand how the program works for people who haven't programmed this code or forgot how it worked, more difficult to understand)
As far as Creepypastas go, Psychosis is one of my favorites. Not to spoil anything, the ending is fantastic and ties everything together AMAZINGLY! Other than that I'm reading a ton of SCP stuff. The SCP wiki has a couple THOUSAND articles, and there's a lot of quality stuff, especially the newer ones, but some absolute gems in the old ones as well. The longest running and the most successful community writing project on the Internet. If you want some S-tier psychological horror, read SCP-3001 "Red Reality".
As someone with over 3100 OFFICIAL hours in sfm (and likely closer to 5000 unofficial since steam only counts when you are online and there were long stretches where i didn't have internet, or had limited internet) I can probably offer some insight. its the main program because, as some have said, it comes with an early version of tf2 built in. plus, adding new content is usually as simple as drag and dropping into the sfm folder. what you described about win filmmaker is very much true of sfm too. you can just plop a model into a 3d space, and start animating it. anyone telling you that programs like blender (which i have also used alot) is easier are likely just fanboys/girls, themselves. and have likely been using it for some time. all animation programs have jank, its just a different kind of jank for each program. the learning curve for sfm is no where near as steep as blender. can you be rendering out posters or even short animations on day 1. but ofcourse, more complexity means more challenges. and I would say perfectionism is alot of the issue here, which i can understand. I ran into the same problem when messing with lasers, esp that one. did manage to fix it, tho i can't remember how. The muzzle flash thing, I think its a case of "working harder to be lazy". i would have just gone into the particle editor and set it to keep going, but i suspect he was about done editing particles at that point and just said "f*** it" and just started copying and pasting the muzzle flash particle. not to say i haven't had my fair share of "wtf is happening in this program" moments. but the fact that half the comments on my most popular video is complaining about a character not having hair (due to type of sfm spagetti), and that i still get them 7 years later, i can certainly understand trying to fix problems even if you go insane doing it.
you dont know much about lazy do ya? The beard is part of his brand and he wants to kep it as accurate to the game whilst also being funny. hes a perfectionist
I don't know if it really counts a creepypasta but I've always really enjoyed stories like "I dated my best friend to ruin my life","broadcast from a lonely radio station", and "tales from the gas station"
17:40 I pointed it out in his video but I'll say it again: "ent_fire" is the start of a command to modify an entity on the map, "env_lightglow" is the sprite that is rendered over various lightsource like the lightbulb and consists of a circular, transparent texture to give the lights a sense of brightness, and "kill" means to remove said entities that you have targeted.
My favorite creepypasta has to be one called SFTSmile which is about a chatroom with people forced to take part of it and it's challenges or otherwise get killed. It's pretty fun because, well it's told as a chatroom log, which was the first time I had seen such a thing happen back when I read creepypastas.
6:40 Ah, but see, his struggles with this particle have lead people to make a fixed version which is now available on the SFM workshop! As with so many other technical issues he had, like the muzzle flashes and the beard problem. 8:20 It's convenient due to the readily-available assets like models and maps that come pre-installed, combined with the workshop that automatically installs new assets you select from what people upload. Part of the issue is that SFM just hasn't been updated in more than a decade. 9:30 I'm not colorblind, and I can pretty easily distinguish them, as the pink is much brighter than the red. 12:34 Because he's trying to accurately recreate the players that were present, as it's a recreation of a real event.
Fun fact: My grandfather was colorblind (red-green colorblind, like me), but he was part of our country's military. He once told me that, at one point, he and his comrades were given a photograph of a camouflaged tank in a forest. Due to his colorblindness, he actually managed to spot the tank, simply because the camouflage shade didn't quite match up with the rest, and he picked that up very quickly. Similarly, I have noticed in zoos that I can easily spot chameleons where other people struggle.
6:31 you god damn genius, BUT OF COURSE, this would have made complete sense and everyone would be alright with the correct context. but at-lass, "Lazy" Purple is too much of a perfectionist to let that slip by
11:40 you should watch the video of how fucked up the code is for team fortress 2 there's literally notes inside the games code left over by devs where they were literally cursing and losing their mind on why they couldn't get things to work. One of the many reasons it's not easy to update or change things in this game.
I love how much I relate to this video, I don't make animations but I do play Arma and make ops for my friends. And god is it an unholy process. Hitting shit till they work hours of research combined with trial and error to find simple answers of changing a 0 to a 1.
21:14 Earthbound's music is QUITE soothing. I love the game in and of itself. You might be interested in playing it through once for a stream or video.
The Blue Man is my favorite creepy pasta. Its spooky. It reminds me of something that actually happened to a couple of friends of mine, and it even comes with a great song!
SFM is the default because it's by far the easiest in using original TF2 assets: animations, maps, model etc. For other programs you manually need to port every asset, which doesn't work half of the time. Plus, SFM allows you to record gameplay, which is perfect for recreations of clips, and Lazy needs it.
If you like Windows 3d movie maker, I recommend checking out "the blue shell incident" by Vargskelethor Joel. It may not jive well with a reaction format, but it's quite an enjoyable experience. Hope you see this :)
For a perspective on how gmod animation works these days instead of SFM, you should check out the Tutorial Eltorro64Rus made on it. Doesn't have to be a video, I just think it's informative to see how far stop motion animation has come in the context of machinima.
I know im pretty late but polybius is one of my favorite creepypastas/urban legends. Its so cool and theres a really interesting documentary on it made by a channel called "Ahoy". If you havent watched it yet, i recommend it.
btw, the reason why he wants everything to be perfect in these sfm animations is because he wants to capture every. single. perfect. thing to the sfm that happened to that certain fight.
My favorite creepypasta is "the shortest creepypasta" The apocalypse happened and the last person on earth is sitting in their makeshift home. Suddenly they hear a knock on the door
Blender is way better then source filmmaker however when u get used to using something for so long switching between different software's isn't worth it even with the bugs. Also I dont necessarily agree with your take on just going with the issues because you aren't a triple A developer from the point of view of a creator(soon will move to animation when I get the right equipment). If someone takes on the task of creating anything its usually because they're passionate about said thing. And like lazy purple set a standard for the work they put out. His sfm animations are supposed to be stylized recreations of his games. So stuff like the wranglers color or the pyro being ubered when it's not supposed to be, while in the grand scheme of the world is a very little problem, to a creator these little things bug the hell out of us. Hell on some of my low effort work I sometimes end up spending time on stuff that bother me. Because when I make something I want it to be something that I am proud of. And if that involves spending time fixing a relatively small bug I will do it because it will bother me if I dont.
Found footage/creepypasta stuff can be quite good when done well. A lot of people have been reacting to the "Backrooms" lately - ruclips.net/video/H4dGpz6cnHo/видео.html But a couple of great classics are the stuff by Local 58, and Gemini Home Entertainment. I personally love "Skywatching" by the former, and the latter has plenty of others along the same vein. ruclips.net/video/2BD-ba-aXQo/видео.html - Skywatching ruclips.net/video/vyDvpwpRPM4/видео.html - World's Weirdest Animals
You need to react to the 'Gameboy advance SP blue edition' creepypasta sometime. AntoineDelak did an animation for it. That's the guy who made "Heavy is dead".
Dyatlov Pass Incident is a really cool creepypasta. It’s based on an already weird story about mountain climbers going missing in the Russian mountains, it has a SCP kind of vibe so that’s always cool!
My favorite creepypasta is NES Godzilla, kinda a long story but without a doubt it's by far one of the best (if it's not the best) videogame creepypasta of all times
The video game Omori is practically a creepypasta in and of itself. It's story is SUPER unnerving, and it's an RPG to go on top of it. It's the definition of the combination of Wholesome and Horror game. And those two usually don't fit in the same sentence.
I am NOT a horror fan. I am averse to gore and blood. Like, gag reflex to lexical depictions of bloody gore. Depict brain matter gore in text and I may vomit. This is my king of horror. Shit that makes no sense. But you need to go through this BS for you to get through the nature, to make it make sense.
i havent tried using SFM. but i did make a simple king of the hill map using the Hammer map editor and creator tool. and id never use that again. its a wonder tf2 is still functioning.
It's worth noting- Lazy is VERY MUCH SO a perfectionist.

ironic considering lazy is in his name
you just took the words right out of my mouth lol
I feel the same as lazypurple does in sfm, and I'm pretty sure A LOTTA other people too.
I hope garrys mod gets his own version of sfm that'll replace sfm entirely

8:20 It's convenient due to the readily-available assets like models and maps that come pre-installed, combined with the workshop that automatically installs new assets you select from what people upload. Part of the issue is that SFM just hasn't been updated in more than a decade.
9:30 I'm not colorblind, and I can pretty easily distinguish them, as the pink is much brighter than the red.
12:34 Because he's trying to accurately recreate the players that were present, as it's a recreation of a real event.
The reason he didn't change the pyro model because he wanted it too look like the pyro in the clip
I think I recommended this on a past video but I still highly recommend reacting to the Team Neighborhood series.
6:31 you god damn genius, BUT OF COURSE, this would have made complete sense and everyone would be alright with the correct context.
but at-lass, "Lazy" Purple is too much of a perfectionist to let that slip by
my favorite creepypasta is probably the entirety of garfield fan content, specifically lasagnacat
I love the lost silver creepy pasta
11:40 you should watch the video of how fucked up the code is for team fortress 2 there's literally notes inside the games code left over by devs where they were literally cursing and losing their mind on why they couldn't get things to work. One of the many reasons it's not easy to update or change things in this game.
LazyPurple can't help it, he is the definition of perfectionist among SFM animators.
I love how much I relate to this video, I don't make animations but I do play Arma and make ops for my friends. And god is it an unholy process. Hitting shit till they work hours of research combined with trial and error to find simple answers of changing a 0 to a 1.
21:14
Earthbound's music is QUITE soothing. I love the game in and of itself. You might be interested in playing it through once for a stream or video.
"They were just checking for a pulse, and even that was negotiable"
My favorite creepypasta is “always count a spiders legs” the only one that has given me shivers
I myself am an perfectionist to some extent and the laser problem just shows the pain that you go through but in the end it was probably worth it
"I'm a pyro main, suffering is what I do"
If you're into found footage horror, you should react to the new _Backrooms_ series by kane pixels - it really elevates the genre.
Sfm actually works pretty well… only if you make it simple…
The gunslinger not being equipped is not really a concern, the whole point of the glove that engie is using, is to hide his mechanical hand.
The reason he is not using bade classes is because they are a recreation of a competitive match, so he makes everyone look like they did in the match.
My man, you gotta read up on the SCP Foundation, it's the greatest collection of scary, unsettling, creepypasta-ey stuff on the internet.
For a perspective on how gmod animation works these days instead of SFM, you should check out the Tutorial Eltorro64Rus made on it. Doesn't have to be a video, I just think it's informative to see how far stop motion animation has come in the context of machinima.
Yes. Just yes. New upload.
I know im pretty late but polybius is one of my favorite creepypastas/urban legends. Its so cool and theres a really interesting documentary on it made by a channel called "Ahoy". If you havent watched it yet, i recommend it.
SFM and other 3D animation software have unique quirks that can make you suffer through editing even when you're experienced enough.
5 months late, but my favorite creepypasta has gotta be room zero. It’s the sequel to Abandoned by Disney and it’s pretty damn scary
SFM is where some dude with too much time on his hands creates eldritch abominations by mistake just to make a 3 second skit.
Obviously he didn't appease the machine spirit of his system.
And we know where is it going about technology.
Look at those Adeptus Mechanicus.
"When Science Found God" - Amazing science based creepypasta
I love the Ben Drowned creepypasta, mostly because of the idea of the statue following you around
18:07 bruh, that's straight up just the adeptus mechanicus, minus actually praying to the machine
Not everyone in TF2 has base models they have cosmetics on the characters so lazy has to have every cosmetic each character has every single one
Lost Silver is my favorite creepypasta
My favorite creepypasta is the one about smile.jpg or the one about the radioactive/toxic dog that can only be satisfied by lemonade.
There's one that's pretty good it called kkhta it's more bad drawing and gore but it's still pretty good
Favorite creepy pasta is probably my neighbors dog. He smiles a lot but for some reason people go missing after
btw, the reason why he wants everything to be perfect in these sfm animations is because he wants to capture every. single. perfect. thing to the sfm that happened to that certain fight.
If you like creepypastas you might like "Engie's friendly foe" or "Heavydundy" (both are Gmod animations)
You should react to one or both of them
" Function. . . . . . . . . . Moving on. "
- This guy
After having seen this I honestly feel like it would have been easier to animate stuff in freaking mario paint.
"They were checking for a pulse and even that was negotiable" lmao
My favorite creepypasta is "the shortest creepypasta"
The apocalypse happened and the last person on earth is sitting in their makeshift home.
A lot of people have been reacting to the "Backrooms" lately - ruclips.net/video/H4dGpz6cnHo/видео.html
But a couple of great classics are the stuff by Local 58, and Gemini Home Entertainment. I personally love "Skywatching" by the former, and the latter has plenty of others along the same vein.
ruclips.net/video/2BD-ba-aXQo/видео.html - Skywatching
ruclips.net/video/vyDvpwpRPM4/видео.html - World's Weirdest Animals
As an animator myself, I am very glad to be a Blender 3D user. I can't imagine having to deal with all this jank.
still recommending Fawful's Minion tf2 Retrospective
Lazier purple is his secondary, much smaller channel. Only like 15 videos. The best videos on that channel are near the top like his tf2 vr video
There is one type of STM video that I know about the most. :) Some of them look amazing and are over 30 minutes long.
The opening made me so fucking proud lol
My favorite was always the Russian sleep experiment because of how balls to the wall crazy it was
Welp, my favorite creepypasta is "Godzilla NES" and you really should check it out
You need to react to the 'Gameboy advance SP blue edition' creepypasta sometime. AntoineDelak did an animation for it. That's the guy who made "Heavy is dead".
In Extras From How it Feels to play Demoman, he has some more SFM atrocites
Dyatlov Pass Incident is a really cool creepypasta. It’s based on an already weird story about mountain climbers going missing in the Russian mountains, it has a SCP kind of vibe so that’s always cool!
My favorite creepypasta is SCP-3008 "A Perfectly Normal, Regular Old Ikea"
My favorite creepypasta is NES Godzilla, kinda a long story but without a doubt it's by far one of the best (if it's not the best) videogame creepypasta of all times
Since you asked, it's not really a creepypasta but people have been making trollface creepy it's called the "Trollge" series.
the thing about the pink laser is that lazy purple is VERY not lazy. and pink is very different from red.
I would recommend some of Moidawg's Foxhole war 83 content. I think you would find the player driven logistics and planning interesting.
The video game Omori is practically a creepypasta in and of itself. It's story is SUPER unnerving, and it's an RPG to go on top of it.
It's the definition of the combination of Wholesome and Horror game. And those two usually don't fit in the same sentence.
“Close, you eyes”
12:00 "And this is from a *very* stable game"
Creepasta huh? Supermarket monster. Definitely
I think the reason he doesn't use base characters in every scene is because a lot of them are loadouts from patreon subs
i havent tried using SFM. but i did make a simple king of the hill map using the Hammer map editor and creator tool. and id never use that again. its a wonder tf2 is still functioning.
was expecting a transition into a dollarshaveclub sponsorship at 13:44 lol
