Avoid This “Muscling” Mistake with Drills as a New BJJ White Belt

  • Today's video is based off a situation that happened with one of my brand new White Belts recently and my corrections I gave to him And it's something I've done before. It's also something I've seen a lot of newcomers to BJJ do as well.
    The basic idea is that when you're drilling a technique in BJJ for the first little bit. You want to be as fluid as possible to get the movement set. You don't want to tense up and muscle everything. This is super important for newer Brazilian Jiiu-jitsu White Belts who try to go super fast or muscle things.
    Not to say you'll never need to muscle anything. But the idea is that if we train our Jiu-jitsu techniques to be as perfect as possible during the learning phase of the technique. Later when we are rolling and the natural stress of rolling creates a little sloppiness the technique will be good enough to hold up.
    Hope the tip in the video helps!

    I am a almost 38 yr old , 1 month in, white belt and I needed to hear this today. I actually was getting frustrated when we where practicing the butterfly sweep about a week ago and I was doing the exact same thing you did when you where a blue/ purple belt. And I was getting frustrated. This video definitely helped! Thanks!

    thanks CHEWY for this reminder...as a 38 y/o white belt and new in this art/sport...i tend to get tensed and i forget to breathe...i felt that im so competitive that...im competing against myself...
    just like last training i had...i was partnered to a experienced white belt and not to mention he has bigger or should i say heavier than me...i was so into submitting and getting the perfect position that turns out i was bing over powered everytime...and gassed out because i forgot to do my framings and positioning...because im to focus on one thing...unfortunately i tapped out mostly because i cant breathe since he was in my chest the whole time...
    my teacher talked to me after and she told me that im still doing great...but i given up...felt discouraged...
    she helps me to get into my senses...to RELAX, because youre too tensed...she also told me that its ok...you just need to practice and practice and train...and she told me that IT'S OK...SO DON'T BE DISCOURAGED...

    Question: Any advice for rolling with newer guys? I've been training no-gi for about 3-4 months and have made a lot of progress so far. However, the 3-4 times I've rolled with the newer guys I've gotten small injuries from the frantic grappling and death grips that tend to occur. I know it's my responsibility to be able to handle the new guys, but the injuries don't seem worth it. Am I in the right to hold off rolling with them untill later in my career? Thanks!

    • @DylanJo123
      @DylanJo123 3 года назад +1

      As a new guy myself, maybe you should tell them what theyre doing so they can make the sparring experience better for the both of you. Im beginning to think i may be doing something similar to those new guys youre talking about, since it seems like the regular guys seem to try to avoid me after a couple rolls.

      As the youngest/smallest guy in my gym, my best advice is to learn to wrestle primarily with your legs and work off your back because that's where you're going to end up most of the time.

    • @stupidandboot4507
      @stupidandboot4507 3 года назад +1

      Learn sweeps and escapes then learn how to work top position and takedowns.
      I prefer half guard because I'm smaller than the majority of guys in my gym and it allows me to actually lock up the guard as opposed to full guard where I get my guard broken 95% of the time

      I would say take advantage of this time to hone your technique. I wouldn’t rush to lift weights, gain weight, etc. This time should be used for developing your foundation and those base skills that will go with you throughout your grappling journey. Guys who start out big and strong often never realize how much their strength and even their bone density plays a role in their success. Don’t worry, as you get older and start growing you can start adding the strength and muscle moves. The best part is you will know the difference.

    • @MinhaFamiliaAQBJJ
      @MinhaFamiliaAQBJJ 3 года назад +1

      Good advice in the comments. I also recommend you learn to bait. Give them an arm or something to cause them to create space.as a bigger guy I can tell you that we have a hard time holding the smaller guys down and i personally end up giving up space and if i miss the submission it allows them to recompose and get into better position. Just my 3 cents! Keep rollin!

    • @dgonzaga17

      If you're not a jerk I don't think people will have a problem rolling with you. "Big" guys tend to realease all their weight and strength without much technique on smaller guys making the roll boring and painful for the one getting smashed.
