Scissor Sweep for BJJ White Belts (Try These Adjustments)

- Опубликовано: 22 июл 2017
- The Scissor Sweep is one of the first Sweeps from Guard that most BJJ White Belts learn. And in a recent video where I covered some simple adjustments to the Keylock. Several of the White Belts that watch the channel asked for some tips on some of the really basic Brazilian Jiu-jitsu techniques that White Belts use.
So I decided to cover the Scissor Sweep since this is one of the 1st sweeps most White Belts learn. In addition, the movement used for the Scissor Sweep will be used over and over again in Brazilian Jiujitsu. Whether you’re trying to sweep of if you’re trying to open guard and transition to other positions beside the full guard.
In this video I show some simple adjustments and tweaks to the Scissor Sweep that have made this BJJ technique useable for me as a higher level belt and in addition been very helpful to many of my students.
Simple things like turning the wrist over, grinding the hips up rather than simply coming up to the knees in mount have really helped.
Try combining these adjustments with some of the instruction your BJJ coach teaches you at your gym.
I hope this video helps your BJJ Scissor Sweep regardless of whether you're a White Belt or not.
Thanks for watching!

Can you make a whitebelt basics playlist?
yeah I'll second that
that'd be a good thing to go over before/after class
Yeyeyeyeyey
I
I support this message
I also support this statement haha. Thanks.
First week in BJJ. I think understanding the importance of always having good grips is the most important lesson I have learned so far. That, and not forgetting to breathe.
Ha yes, my prof constantly walks around to the new students saying "breathe, dont forget to breathe!"
breathing is important
my cardio got a lot better when i stopped holding my breath
Totally, that's what Rickson Gracie talks a lot about in his book as well. And the name of the book is even named "breathe". It's so important, I think it even helps me remain calmer during rolls when I control my breathing.
"You know what time it is? Scissor sweep time. " #dead
#refund
I was rolling and landed an opportunity to scissor sweep and I legit said outloud "it's scissor sweep time" as I looked at my imaginary watch 😂 some things just stick with you. Thanks chewy, much love ♥️
You should make these a sort of series
Paul Storrie +1
I second that :)
Thirded
DO IT
Who TWO-ted?
Turning your arm to “check the time” is a great little micro adjustment for executing this sweep more effectively.
Corny jokes are the best because you get a little chuckle with very little thought and then move on. For example: what is the difference between a hippo and a Zippo? ones really heavy and the other is a little lighter. I'm sure this just brightened up someone's day.
Josh Hawkes made me smile!
just ruined mine
What did the ghost say to the bee? Boobie
hahaha love these!

Thank you, we worked on this in class tonight and your video is soooo informative!
Starting bjj Monday due to your videos man. Thanks for the inspiration
How did it go?
That's most important belt promotion of your entire life :) Hope you're sticking with it buddy
He died
he went once, bought a gi, paid for the first month and was never seen again...
Chewy is the best
Your teaching style is top notch. The 🌽 jokes are the best, never stop. Those kids will remember “scissor sweep time” forever 🎉❤
That slide to mount alone is worth a subscribe.
As a multiple stripe blue belt this kind of thing is gold. The devil is in the details, I am always looking to revisit moves to make them smoother and more effective. I feel there is no better way then going over the basics. Thank you and I look forward to seeing more!
Glad I found your channel. I'm 63 and thought BJJ would round out my game. Found it so much more fun than I could have imagined. Bless you and your teachings!
This was super helpful. I just spent a class totally lost on the scissor sweep. This helped explain why.
LMAO, I wish I saw this video 3 days ago, it would've save a lot of frustration for me and my coach. 2 days ago he showed me the scissor sweep for the first time and I just wasn't getting it.
Thanks Chewy, your videos help me a great deal! Hopefully, I will be able to visit Derby City and thank you, Adam, Chad et al in person.
White Belt here. Day 2 . Thanks for this.
These videos help me so much. I'm a no stripe white belt in for 3 months as of today and struggle at times, but when I watch your videos my technique improves and the techniques make sense. Thank you!!
Gradings around the corner, really appreciate these videos!! 🤙
I’m a new one. White belt as can be. I’m learning a lot from your tips! Appreciate what you do. 🙏🏼
Say, kids..."What time is it?" - IT'S SCISSOR SWEEP TIME! 😆 Great video, Chewy. I really appreciate all the videos you've posted. I'm not very flexible, so I can use all the helpful tips you give to improve my techniques. It's all in the details! Thanks again.
Chewy! I included this tips on class tonight and I was sweeping a partner 70 Pounds+ heavier than me, EFFORTLESS!! To get that good deep grip on the lapel it's crucial against tall/heavier opponents to really break their posture and leg that goes next to his leg REALLY needs to be completely flat no kidding and finally what helped my momentum was the detail of using your chest to kinda 'push' and help your opponent turn..amazing..2 week white belt here! thank you sir! Hey Chad no liabilities!
Brilliant. Dig the check your watch motion. They’re so far forward at that point that the sweep is 90% there without anything else. Thx much for this
Dude, you just help me out tremendously with this video. I’m getting killed in class. On sweeps. I’ve only been rolling for 2 1/2 months. 🤙🏼
This has always been my favorite , in fact, it's my go to and it work. The point is that basic techniques are always the best and reliable because they rely on gross motor skills.
GREAT VIDEO! from an old made who is 1 month into his BJJ journey. Thank you
This was the first technique I ever learned when I started BJJ. Couldn't figure out how to even do it when I drilled it that first time. Now, I'm hitting it pretty frequently, especially on higher belts.
Just did this in class not even an hour ago. You explained it so much better.
i love your chanel and leadership so much. You helped me alot through my first weeks of my BJJ journey 🇩🇪❤️🇺🇸
Happy to help. Appreciate the comment.
just started 2 weeks ago and pulled off first scissor sweep during live rounds tonight thanks to your video. thank you for doing these
This is such a phenomenal breakdown of the sweep!
"Do you know what time it is? It's scissor sweep time."
Never have I face palmed so hard. Well played Chewie. Well played.
Great video. For ALL belt levels.
Can't wait to try these adjustments in practice! Thanks much Chewie.
I love these details. This is very much the invisible aspect. Great stuff.
Awesome! Really well and simply explained! Thanks man! Keep the white belt vids coming!!
Man! This was awesome. This sweep is one of the first ones I learned but I have never been able to pull it off in real roll. I love these tweaks !
3:18 that's golden tip
You’re a wonderful teacher and coach bro. I’m a super huge fan.
You’re a great coach Chewy. I find your videos very helpful.
Wonderful sweep!
Thank you for always showing solid material.
@chewjitsu I struggled a lot with this move. THIS video make it easier for me to understand. Going to class tonight to make this move go into effect
I just went to my very first BJJ class today! I learned this move and it was my absolute favorite. ♥️ Thanks for the video.
Just started my BJJ journey. Love your videos, I am always picking up little things that make a big difference. Keep up the great work!
I LOVE that watch detail. I’m a brown belt and I STILL use the scissor sweep against any level. It’s one of my favorites. Thank you, professor. Great detail!
Can't wait to try it...Thanks!
Really great way to explain the pull
Chewy, been training for 2 months so far and this video helped get me my first successful scissor sweep today while rolling. Much appreciated!
Started BJJ today. Will update on my progress. So far very interested. Thanks for the vids man.
I always had soooo much trouble with this one. The time trick helped me a lot. Thank you so much!
Wow, this really opened my eyes to possibilities. I usually go from close guard to mounting, but I put a lot of strength doing this, because almost never my grips are where they're supposed to be. But this video helped me see the train of thought on how to sweep my rolling partners. Thank You!!
I think the most useful piece of information in this video for me was the idea of keeping your hips low as you mount. I have to keep that in mind.
Love you and your videos, you help my game out a lot. Thank you
Incredibly helpful, thanks Chewy
I’ve got my first competition coming up in a month and I naturally play a lot of Z-guard so I’m really glad I found this video
Love your page dude. Just started training. Love it
He is giving away precious gems 💎
Mannnn!! This helped big time. Wild story from today.... I watched this video in the parking lot of my jiu jitsu school. I'm a green belt so very green haha, pun intended.
I got this sweep on a black belt today BUT I didn't staple the lapel to the mat so I really only got the sweep half way and didn't fully come out on top but man did he congratulate me at the end of the roll.
Keep up the stellar content dude!!!!
Good video. Made me understand better what I did at training.
Chewy, I really like your stuff and your concise and tenable philosophies. Would you consider doing some micro-seminar videos? Pick a postion/submission and really break it down and make it like 10-30 min long. Appreciate your contributions, keep it up!
Great details as usual, I also like to grab the gi on the seam around their triceps (Roger Gracie likes that grip) , it gives great control over the arm and when I sweep I punched that arm in. That's what I love about jiu jitsu, I thought I knew this sweep in and out and there you go, I've learned something from your video
Brilliant 👏 touches
Such a great video, thanks!! Next time I roll, I'll try to make it a scissor sweep time
iv been having a bit of trouble scissor sweeping bigger people in class so ill try these tips
Professor Chewmeister always dropping gems!
Awesome! Ty for the tip. Tried this last night and It was hard to sweep with a bigger guy but I see now that I need to check my "watch". 😆 I'm going to practice this! Ty ty!
Thank you for your great lessons , just started BJJ a few weeks ago and these videos sure do help me a lot .Love your sense of humor too ahhaahha ."You know what time it is? its Jiu-jitsu time " made my day :)
I love it as white belt. hope making this sort of vid more. thank you a lot. :)
Perfect explaination...thanks coach!
Dude you're videos are so awesome and helpful. Thank you so much.
Thanks so much for the comment. Appreciate it!
I recently started jiu jitsu and this was super helpful! Great vid!
Now that I’m actually able to pull guard from my knees this will be helpful. Before everyone would just go around my legs
The 03:00 movement is widely known in Judo for major throws from sleeves, for example IPPON seoinage. Good explanation and great "scissors sweep time" too 😉
Ahhhh so THAT'S what I was missing. I could never get this sweep to work, and it must be because I wasn't pulling the person forward and off their base before I scissor...I'll definitely try this "check the time" technique. Such a great video, thanks.
This is awesome! Just started and your page has helped me so much!
Please make a series like this.
Man this showed up in my feed at just the right time. Thanks Chewie.
Thx man ur videos are so helpful. I just learned the scissor sweep today n while trying to go over it in my head I forgot where the grips were n this video saved me
Thx again chew jitsu :)
fantastic really, these little adjustments and tips are really helpful, I live in a foreign far a way country where they don't speak English and I have to understand from the movements only shown by coach what to do, these little things always slips right past me
than you, really appreciate it, thank you a million time
Thank you! Im looking forward to test this out!
Awesome video, I really needed that. Thank you a lot, keep it like that!
Nice look at my watch adjustment. In Judo that's called Kuzushi and and its used for throws. Great video!
Fantastic details - thanks 🙏
Got a chuckle out of me lol. You know what time it is? Scissor Sweep Time!!
Thank you for the smaller details
Thanks this really helped me!
Was just struggling with these tonight, and this video came up on my suggested! Madness, great vid 👊🏽
Google is spying on you bro...
Awesome stuff! I’m a 4 stripe purple belt and find this useful. Good detail and great joke. 😂💪🏼
Super helpful, thank you!
Learned this yesterday man, thanks so much for the videos!
Very very good teaching.
Awesome detail
Yes I like the basic whitebelt alot!
Think I'll try this tonight thanks
Hey, thanks a lot. I can't wait to try this.
I’m going to my first class later today and I’m both nervous and excited! Your videos are so inspiring thanks for sharing them 😘
Are you still training? We need answers!
