I have a few quick recommendations:
If you’re experiencing a lot of pain, constant from the moment you wake up until you fall asleep, you’re in a state of inflammation and exercise will increase it.
You can find pain relief during night by sleeping in a sitting position but laying on your back. So basically you put something under your lower limbs to achieve a 90 degree angle in your hips and again in your knees. Just as if you were sitting.
Make use of a TENS in this fase, it will numb the pain and increases blood flow. Apply it and open the area where the hernia is located. Probable your GP can explain you.
A herniated disk will go trough 3 phases, the inflammatory phase which is very painful. Your auto immune system will be set in motion to recycle the herniated material. Next you have the tissue repair phase, the ruptured annulus fibrosus is being repaired and in this phase you can start up the Mckenzie procedure. After you went through this procedure you will end up in the tissue remodeling phase in which you need to start the correct exercises to remodel the new scar tissue so it becomes flexible. In all cases it’s of critical importance to be guided by a good GP. I ‘am not a health care provider, just an other victim who read the Mechanical Diagnostic & Therapy books of Robin Mckenzie. If your pain increases, go one step back. Assure you posture is correct at all time during the day, mind your lordosis! Remember, you’re not alone and self education is the key to succes. You need to understand your condition in order to deal with it in your everyday live. Good luck, I’m also still recovering. Oh, and if you run into a doctor that tells you a condition is for the rest of your live, you best seek help elsewhere. Very few conditions are for live, the body has an enormous capacity to heal itself. It only needs the right circumstances. One last tip, in the inflammation state, make tea from ginger, fresh curcuma root and black pepper. Flood yourself with it, it has remarkable benefits.

My bug bare is consultants telling their patients what they can’t do and how they have to change their life. Utter bullocks. People CAN live a full life and if not even more then what they did pre bulge with a diagnosis of a lumbar disc bulge or herniation. Most of us carry bulges without even realising. There is not taking away the horrendous pain you can have when one is acutely flared but be reassured MOST do settle and you can get back to your life! 🙏❤

As an over50-year old Ballerina, I pushed vigorously in the Forward Fold position of Yoga in order to stretch my hamstrings, touch the floor with my palms, and forward split as low as I could. My Yin Yoga Teacher, Ballet Teacher, and Primary Care Physician never told me the possible disc harm I was self-imposing. So, I kept pushing through the pain yo get my results and now I’m out of Ballet and in Physical Therapy to deal with a 1mm bulging disc between L4 and L5. Girl I hear you. I'm a ballroom dancer with an L-L5 herniation. I kept trying to push through it. My coach certainly wasn't going to tell me to stop. I had to "check my ego" as Emma says and stop all dancing. :( Now it's time to find a good rehab doctor. The PTs I've been going to were worthless. I'm sad to have stopped dancing but hopeful that I will eventually recover. I know you will too! We just have to leave dance alone for the moment. Many blessings for healing to you!

I was in tons of pain for 3-4 weeks so much so i couldn't walk i couldn't move.. Painkillers didn't work... I took steroids and that helped 50% ... Went to 3 different physiotherapist... 2/3 said I'll need surgery down the road... Got MRI and my disc had spilled out and was pressing entire spinal cord...I'm a man and i never show emotions specifically pain but this pain was fkn unbearable... I said yes to surgery to get rid of the pain... Underwent endoscopic surgery to treat it and everything was painful from needles to surgery to then walking and sitting and mental pain of being a burden on your family... I was told to get bed rest for 6 weeks.... And full recovery has been said to be 6 months... Now its been 10 days after surgery i don't have too much pain but i am relearning to walk again... My left leg is half numb and i don't feel it... I hate my life...
The point of my story is guys if you feel pain please go check it up with a doctor... Specially men.. We have to be loving to ourselves guys... Please don't do what i did.

It’s great to hear you are pain free after such a long journey.
I currently have a herniated L5 pinching my nerve, running down my right side.
Initially hurt my back last November but worked through it, good days/ bad days.
I’d been training for an Ironman race taking place this Sunday!
Had been going to physical therapy and getting acupuncture twice a week and things were going well training wise, swim was great, my bike was coming along, that’s where I had most of my pain, my right hamstring & glute really tightened up but we’re getting better after doing the prescribed stretches.
I’d done most of my run training on the treadmill up until about seven weeks ago.
Then after a couple of long road runs everything seemed ok.
I literally sat into my car one morning and the pain in my hamstring/ glute was excruciating. I could barely walk.
I’m currently only really pain free lying down, I have been doing the Mackenzie method and sill going to physio.
I had an MRI and I had both an epidural and a steroid shot into my spine. It gave some relief but I still cannot walk more than 30/40 feet without having to lie down and stretch.
Going for surgery next Thursday 18th.
Hopefully it will take the pressure off the nerve and be pain free 🤞.
It was great to hear your story and I hope you stay pain free.

Hi Allan, did you have the surgery? How are you feeling?

I just want to hear about your experience.
I hope you are well and pain free.

      @@clarettrejo
      Hi Claret,
Yes, I had my surgery on August 18th.
The surgery went well thankfully. As soon as I woke up afterwards I could feel immediate relief from the siatic pain in my glute and leg.
I was walking around the room two hours later and the physio had me walking around the following morning, up and down the stairs!
I was obviously sore where I had the incision but I could walk and sit which was something I could not do for the previous two months.
I was walking very slowly and I did have some pain on the outer side of my calf for a couple of weeks afterwards, somewhere I did not have pain previously but that passed after a few weeks. I started walking about 1k a day a week or so post op. I found it difficult to go much further and was tired after these short walks and if I walked too far i would be wiped the following day. It improved in the following weeks though. I went form cycling & running for hours a week to barely being able to walk 1k without being tired but it does improve slowly.
I am just over three months post op now and am feeling good. I am still a little sore in my lower back and I f I over do things my leg gets a a dull ache but nothing like it was.
I’m back swimming up to 8/10k a week in the last month. It’s non load bearing which is great. I’ve done a few very easy cycles and I was ok.
The biggest thing i would say is to take things as easy as possible in the weeks after surgery, the last thing your son wants is to re herniate his disc. I cannot stress this enough. Please tell him for the first 4/6 weeks try not to bend at the waist and to log roll when getting up from lying down.
I found it extremely difficult to not be active but he will be quite stiff and sore in the following weeks.
The surgery is quite straightforward and if he is careful with his recovery he will be fine.
I left it ten weeks before I returned to work, if he has a physically demanding job I was advised to a minimum of twelve weeks.
It sounds like a long time but if he re herniates it will be starting from the beginning again.
Again, take things as easy & as slowly as possible in the weeks after surgery.
It has definitely helped me and I’m back working, walking, sitting and swimming.
I hope his surgery goes well and I wish him all the very best with it.
There will be good & bad days but there is light at the end of the tunnel and things will get back to normal in time.
      Kind regards,
      Alan.

It’s been about 4 years since my back surgery for my herniated disc and seeing this honestly gives me some hope🙏🏼 since my surgery I’ve had some set backs with other injuries and a hernia surgery that didn’t go well and prevented me from doing PT for over a year. But now I’ve been in pt again for the past year and I’m finally seeing some progress. I’m actually squatting a 20 lb dumbbell for 20 reps. Not much but for the longest time I couldn’t even carry a case of water from my car to my apartment. My sciatica has also gotten a lot better then where it was before but it’s still a work in progress trying to manage it. Idk if that’ll ever fully go away but I’m just happy my lower back is finally feeling somewhat okay again and now after seeing this I really think I can get to a point where I can squat my body weight one day. Still working up to try and jog. Kind of scared since it’s been 4 years since I’ve jogged or ran but I gotta take the leap of faith eventually🙏🏼

I have to comment, do NOT blindly listen to your doctor! If you follow doing what your doctor suggest, and it makes your pain worse, STOP doing it. If your doctor doesn't listen to your feedback that the suggestions didn't help or even made your condition worse, change the doctor!
I had severe back pain, ao strong I couldn't even lift a tea cup from the kitchen counter, and my orthopaedist only gave me an anti-pain injection and Ibuprofen and told me to just go to work as normal, even after MRI diagnosis of acute herniated disc. Of course, his suggestions made it worse as any movement triggered the acute inflammation. Then I went to my GP who gave me a sick leave which I used to stay at home, most of the time laying on the floor on a yoga mat with elevated legs, doing back traction, bought myself a back support belt, and slept on the yoga mat with elevated legs, and being super careful and conscious with every single movement throughout the day. After two weeks, it got significantly better. After three, I could actually start rehab exercises, starting with mild mobilisation (i.e. cat-camel, pelvic tilt, cobra), and then a bit later isometric core stabilisation exercises (i.e. glute bridge, side plank, bird-dog). Next step isometric exercises in movement (i.e. farmer walk/suitcase carry) before eventually moving on to dynamic exercises.
Listen to your body, if an exercise/movement makes the pain worse, dial back and rather err on the side of caution. Of course you should move your body to rebuild, but as said in the video, check your ego and only do movements/exercises that your injured parts are able to sustain and do your body good. When the body starts to heal it also will adapt to your movements and you can slowly add in intensity to get back to your old self and maybe even stronger.

My doctor, nor the back specialist that I went to explained what a herniated disc was. They basically told me my only options was to do the shot and maybe physical therapy would help. Never explained to me the healing process or if the pain would go away. Such a shame that the only way to get good information is by researching yourself online. Thank you for providing your testimony and explaining this process better than my "doctors".

Similar experience for me. I started having hip pain on one side after doing heavy squats and later deadlifts (I'm a weightlifter) about 4 years ago. I tried to work through it for years, but the pain started to become more constant about a year ago so I finally went to a dr. He thought it was bursitis of the hip at first. A cort shot did nothing. Xrays showed some small hip labrum tears so I tried PT for 6 weeks which also did little. He then order an MRI of the hip in which confirmed the tears, but he didn't think they were bad enough to be causing the pain and the pain was in the outer hip, not towards the inside which I typical for a hip issue so then he said it must be a lower back issue so I had an MRI of the back and sure enough, it showed numerous bulging disks pretty much bet all the vert. But he said none of them were very bad except the lower one in which it appears the bulge is pushing against the main nerve on the right side which most likely is making it feel like the pain is coming from the upper leg and hip. But since I still have good strength and no real issues with movement he said there is no cure, but could try a cort shot in the spine for pain relief. That was over a month ago and still haven't heard from the hospital about setting the procedure up. I think I may skip it anyway as it will take years to pay off these bills already that didn't even help. I recently started trying some more supplements and experimental peptide that are supposed to speed up healing. I'm crossing my fingers. I also modified my lifting and guess the days of deadlifts and heavy back squats are over. Guess I'll just go light with lower body and try to maintain and concentrate on upper body. I also started doing some hip and core exercises.

I did 4-6 hours of exercise a day bench was 275 squat was 565 and deadlift was 710 all while maintaining a 6 min mile. Then I had kids young stopped working out starting working regular jobs and now at 30 I have an outbreak of a neurological disorder that lead to weakness and inevitably doing what I always do bulging disc and an annular tare. Now a days just carrying laundry to my laundry room makes my back sore but I’m noticing days that I stay lightly active and do some walking I’m not as sore. Something about the activity that helps but thanks to your advice I’m gonna work on getting back to pts and finishing this.

Hi Emma . Thanks for sharing your story. You story has motivated me to never give up and try harder to recover from my back injury. I just re injured my back again doing incorrect stretches I got from from my physical therapist . 2 months ago I injured my knee at the gym . I am very active and landed on my knee wrong. I was sent by my doctor to start physical therapy. I was given a regiment stretches to do from my PT. For two weeks i did them without fail , and somehow bulged out another disk . My doctor is thinking L3 causing my upper legs to pinch in and burn. I been like this for 2 months. I been seeing my chiropractor and he feels it’s another disk injury. I will start PT again on Tuesday at Kaiser. If that doesn’t work . My doctor will send me to physical medicine to see a doctor for a steroid shot . I rather heal it natural like you did . You give me hope . You are amazing Emma for Sharing your courageous story with all of us of your journey recovering from your back injury. Thanks again . Be safe and be well 🙂

I had to cancel all my vacations. I realized the issue stems from years back and never truly doing anything about it besides regular chiropractic adjustments. Getting the MRI and PT was the answer and modifying my exercises and even daily movements made a difference. Oh, and the 2 biggest things I stopped: Deadlifting and Squats. Those were the workouts that consistently cause flare ups and more pain. Now I’ve incorporated the PT exercises in my daily exercises and it’s been extremely helpful. No injections for me.

Yes bro i have healed and learned a lot about my body and back muscles , after injury my lower body went extremely tight like hamstrings hip mobility, first and foremost is the doctor selection you should be able to find a doctor who listens to you and you only and gives you time separately, that was the key, my doctor gave me separate time and listened to my issues properly. 2. Movement is key if you have pain you gotta walk or move . You should never be at rest because of pain and 3. Time sorts everything out exercise and everything is good but actual healing happens with time and 4. No movement is bad for you , you can bend do all sorts of things just dont lift heavy ,

I am able to do 90% of exercises in gym and the other 10% is squats or deadlifts which i do with lighter weight and try to correct my form as much as possible, also you can adapt to different alternatives is what i learned , you dont necessarily need to stick to squats and deadlifts there are better alternatives which are safe and probability of getting injured back is less so do hack squats , or smith machine squats and i am pretty much satisfied, it also changed my mentality of what my goal was , i was pretty much just focussed on lifting as heavy as possible without knowing what i was getting into and what my goal was i realised that i cant keep increasing the weight every month or week one day i will have to stop because some body can take only so much of weight

I am so glad to listen to this. I am 26. Got it at 24. Only thing bothering me is that the disc wont ever get back in. Just keep doing pain management therapy. Agree. I dont want the pain. But i want my life back where i never had a second thought before lifting weights. Had i not gotten this injury, i wouldn't have to do exercises everyday 😭😭😭😭

Emma, I had the same experience.. I had a herniated disc in 2019 and it happened all of a sudden one early morning.. Couldn't manage to creep to the bath hold myself to brush... I rushed to a hospital and they put me on tractiom weights for couple of days and finally a renowned spine surgeon in munbai who had got his surgery in auckland, melbourne and Sydney. Finally a Microdisectomy was done Munimum invasive surgery... was on physio exercises for six months... by the end of 2019 I was back to normal... Today I do my stretch excercises and am perfect... No (BLT) bend lift twist... I am tall and that tends to put a hunch... but by Gods grace I have learnt to carry myself... Good thoughts shared

Thank you so much dear for this sharing. I feel the heartbreak too, when they doctor said you cannot do this and that. All the things that he said was my favourite activities such as treadmill, badminton and zumba. 😭😭 It hurt me so much, when i read that slip disc do not have cure and the doctor also said you can only recover up to 90% or less depending on the individual. It hurt so much hearing that. The worst is this put so impact on my work. Im working in so much pain. Im crying everytime the pain come. I have meet doctor for recovery and also did MRI. And im diagnose with L5-S1. 😭😭 He said i need to do yoga and planks everyday, take vitamin b12, physiotherapy 3x/week and also nerve medicine. We will meet again in 3 months. Hope it works, pray for me ya!
Watching your video, give me motivation to not give up and it is not impossible to cure. Thank you, again!

@lafleur9576 i did epidural & rf in 2021. It went well and i feel so so much better after that. But, unfortunately i fall on my both knees in aug 2023. Now i already got L4-L5-S1 and huge annular tear. I just undergo epidural and pld3 last 26 sept. Still recovery. But it is very painful. For me is more painful than the rf that i did 3 years back. Now, i cannot stand/sit/walk very long. It is very painful for me. Very painful.

Thanks for your honest story. It gives me hope! I’m going 6 months with excruciating sciatica pain from herniated L4 and L5 confirmed by MRI. Can you do a video about your experience getting the shot? I hear some concerns for them but at the same time many people have gotten a shot. Thanks!

    • @DFullerLisa
      @DFullerLisa 2 года назад

In regards to the shot if you are talking about the cortisone shot I have had one. Not a Dr or anything so this is just a personal reflection. I'd say pain scale from 1 being ok to ten being the worst it's at a 7. It's not pleasant but if you can't do physical therapy from pain they are good to relieve pain to start physical therapy. Grade two l5s1 herniated disc. I am scheduling an appointment for a fusion on mine. Be mindful that the shot is kind of like a pill bottle. They can become a revolving door and it's a false sense of safety if it takes the pain away. Still be careful if you're pain stops.

Hi, I loved listening to your story and have been going through the videos of wonderful and inspirational souls like you who have gone through the journey that I will probably. Thanks a lot for being of so much hope, cannot thank you enough.
I’m in a similar situation where an MRI has detected a herniated L5/S1 disc broad based posterior herniation) and a bulging L4/L5. I’ve started with Mckenzie exercises and am feeling that there is some improvement - in about three days.
I have two specific questions which have been bugging me and haven’t gotten helpful answers yet. helpful to have comments from this community (apologies for the long reads):
    1. I was doing snatches about 4 weeks ago and felt my back tweak. Post the tweak, I continued with the session while avoiding snatches. I definitely had screwed up posture the two days before this snatch session. Once I came back home, I was walking around like a crane (if you know what I mean). A couple of days of rest and I was feeling ok - I went out and climbed up a few stairs and felt great. Gradually, I started climbing stairs - Added a 25 kg pack to increase intensity of my exercises - managed about 100 floors in two weeks following the tweak. I also road bicycled a couple of times. I was feeling great during and after the exercise (but would assume poor posture later). About 3 weeks since the incidence, there was some remnant pain - I decided to get an MRI and bam! The question is: does this mean my posture is the bigger factor (which I know was poor) than the exercises and I can potentially improve quickly? Also, there has been no tweak in my back since that initial tweak - so has exercise helped me (or at least not worsened me) since the tweak? I did manage to get fitter in the 3 week period before the MRI - so find it strange to believe that the body did not send me a signal.
    2. Sometimes I think there is something on the back of my thigh or calf - but that hasn’t been discomforting (but just present sometimes - but I wonder if that’s just the muscle ‘existing’). I am not entirely sure if I am making it up or really having remotely sciatic pain. Is this relatable?
Overall, I feel lucky to have discovered this before a debilitating injury, and more importantly, to find a community who have gone through a similar journey and keeping each other strong. I personally will now be taking charge and responsibility for following the process to get out of this and come out wiser and stronger.

I was pain free for 2.5 years working out at physio gym….then it just happened again😢 so had to start again…never really goes away once herniated, will always come and go…you just every few years you’ll go backwards and will tear or herniate again. You just have to continue working on strength……carefully, and work through it.
Time and a cortosone shot to move again. Then strengthen

There is so much from the Daoist perspective which needs to be incorporated, that the licensed doctors are unaware of mostly…purging breath is key, complete exhales out of open mouth, then in thru nose, helps release deep stagnations and pain.

I’ve gone through all this. I will preface this that my wife is a doctor. I’m pain free 5 months after. I workout often to an immediately shut all exercise down and meet with pain management and PT. It was awful pain day and night for a long time. PT helped a much but I also needed steroids as well. My advise to anyone shut everything down. Go see a doctor. If you want to exercise ask and show the doctor what moves you are doing and yes…it will feel like your lifting just 10% of what you can do. The point is your progressing. Follow what the doctors say. You will get better.
