    In her day, Donna Summer was as huge a star as Beyonce and Madonna combined. It breaks my heart so many people under 30 have never even heard of her; they don't even know what they're missing.

      : I'm 27 and got deep into her about 5 years ago even tho I inherited "Love To Love You Baby" and "Live And More" on vinyl when I was about 18. Besides Jessica Cleaves, she's my favorite female vocalist. She also recorded over numerous genres before and after her disco era so yes, she's dynamic! Lol.

    I was lucky enough to have been sitting in the box seats at the Hollywood Bowl where this concert was filmed. I snuck in a cassette tape recorder and taped the whole thing. Unfortunately, years later my tape got ruined. There was another original song she sang to open the show which she never recorded or ever sung again. It was called "Tonight". The chorus was "Tonight, tonight, won't be like any other night". It was a great dance song. I was also in the audience at the Universal Amphitheater the night she recorded her "Live and More" album. Nothing like seeing her live. I don't know why she didn't take credit in this concert for writing "Starting Over Again". Dolly Parton made a big hit of it. I saw her perform many times, and she designed her own costumes for many shows.

Donna was such a special and unique artist; it’s always seemed unfair she’s not remembered more for those talents than she is as the Queen of Disco (which she is, but that’s another story). I remember watching this, too. Totally enthralled in early 1980 at the age of 9. 😉

    At a time when disco was a bad word- early 1980- Donna stood out as a superstar beyond disco. I used to follow the TV Nielsen ratings closely and this special placed #17 for the week, a huge hit for ABC.

    • @scarsr4life
      @scarsr4life Год назад

      @richiguy, actually that stigma was towards the end of the Era when the media associated “Disco” with being homosexual or having a promiscuous lifestyle or as you stated “bad” prior to that the Disco Era was fun, exciting & like no other! “Sylvester” was a Disco singer that was transgender & I believe because he was not hiding his sexuality during the time when it was hush hush, his music was a reflection of him, he hit his high soprano & deep baritone notes like no other! I think he contributed to the association being a gay Disco Artist with # 1hits & a frequent at Studio 54 in NYC which was also known for both Disco & homosexuality.

    I grew up listening to this woman. I hate to say this but, they said she was a man. I was 14 or 15 years old. I never thought a man could sing like that. Then, Irene Cara comes a long and she sounds a little like DONNA. This woman could sing the map of the United States. There were a lot of singers, like Minnie, Denise, Natalie and more who beautiful voices but not as powerful as hers. Minnie Ripperton was in a class by herself. Just like Donna Summer. God rest your soul. I got out of the military in 1980 and I never saw this. This is so amazing...!

I had all her albums and this was added to my Donna collection. Wore that tape out many moons ago. Forever I told my best friend and Donna fanatic about this special and the line she said, "I've been on a little diet, you know. It ain't been easy but it sure has been tight". Thank you so much for posting this! I've been wanting to see a decent copy of this for years, it's just great :-) On a side-note, it's interesting too see how many "disco" artists had to perform faster, slightly more "Rock-N-Roll" style version of their songs when performing live to appease audiences, especially by the time the 80's rolled around. The "On The Radio" clip for me is a highlight, and it seems it was performed and recorded live, as those are not the instruments or vocals on the album or single version. But I've heard Donna could sing live and essentially nail a studio recording of a track in one take. So this would qualify :-)

    David Geffen destroyed her career, he lured her to his record label with promises of continued music success and breaking her into a movie career. He rushed the Wanderer to market, then cancelled the second album and forced her to dissolved her successful partnership with Moroder/Bellotte/Faltermeyer team. Pushed her into the studio with Quincy Jones, passed on She Works Hard for the Money Album, which became a success (because of being handled by Polygram). Trashed both her next two albums with poor choices for singles, and a lack of promotion. In fact she always received a real lack of promotion at Geffen. The President of the company said after she had parted way with Geffen - "that it was never our intention to focus on established superstars".

      ***** I completely disagree Cats Without Claws was a great album, unfortunately the Geffen executives didn't know how to select singles and didn't promote the album. Any promotion she received at the time, came from WEA which was her international distributor. They rejected her requests and the requests of the albums producer, for singles on both 1984 and 1987 albums. By 1987 she was being black balled by American Radio - because of aledged anti-gay remarks made back in 1983. With Cats in 1984, she had the backing of MTV which was the new medium for music at the time; TGMB which was selected by Geffen didn't crack the top 20, but was still played in heavy rotation. Geffen records didn't pay attention to their established artist - all of whom left Geffen unhappy (Elton John, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young etc...). The 1981 project was never competed.. and what we heard in 1996 was an album in demo-phase, it was already completely dated, and it would be hard to predict what or how the album would have done. I for one, believe had Geffen release " Don't Cry For Me Argentina" as a single in 1981, it would have been successful - and would have better set her up for the Quincy Jones album to follow. Both Faltemeyer and Moroder went on to successful careers in the 80's with other artists. Geffen Records had a negative effect on her career - it just wasn't the right place for her to be.

      ***** Dinner With Gershwin is trying to sound like Janet Jackson ??? Sorry to say that comments makes no sense ! None.. the only thing I can think of is the Album cover. But I couldn't even imagine Janet Jackson pulling off such a song, I am not a big fan of the song either, but the vocals are outstanding as usual. Before commenting perhaps you should do some reading and research instead of speculating, because that is what most of your comment is and really doesn't make sense. Perhaps you should find more out about the album and why it was recorded and the intentions, and then what the executives actually decided to do.

      I went to Hollywood in 1979 as a 22 year old and was picked up by David Geffen. I was paraded around as his new toy. I met a lot of famous people. He was a slimy douche bag, and I agree. He did suck off half of Hollywood. Everyone that I have met since, told me he was hated by more people than anyone in Hollywood.

    I remember this special. Donna was a great singer and artist. I never forgot the song she sang about divorce in this special "Starting Over Again", because my parents were going through a divorce at the same time. Her voice was incredible, and everybody knew she broke so many records with soo many number 1 hits. No one ever like the style and unmistakable voice of the great Donna Summer!!
