I must say, they had more class and respect for each others art. If celebrities didn't get along, you wouldn't know about it during the current time existing.
In her day, Donna Summer was as huge a star as Beyonce and Madonna combined. It breaks my heart so many people under 30 have never even heard of her; they don't even know what they're missing.
: I'm 27 and got deep into her about 5 years ago even tho I inherited "Love To Love You Baby" and "Live And More" on vinyl when I was about 18. Besides Jessica Cleaves, she's my favorite female vocalist. She also recorded over numerous genres before and after her disco era so yes, she's dynamic! Lol.
I remember watching the original airing of this!!! As a kid, I was OBSESSED with her b/c she looked like my mother! Sooooo glad I found this nostalgic piece of my history!
I was lucky enough to have been sitting in the box seats at the Hollywood Bowl where this concert was filmed. I snuck in a cassette tape recorder and taped the whole thing. Unfortunately, years later my tape got ruined. There was another original song she sang to open the show which she never recorded or ever sung again. It was called "Tonight". The chorus was "Tonight, tonight, won't be like any other night". It was a great dance song. I was also in the audience at the Universal Amphitheater the night she recorded her "Live and More" album. Nothing like seeing her live. I don't know why she didn't take credit in this concert for writing "Starting Over Again". Dolly Parton made a big hit of it. I saw her perform many times, and she designed her own costumes for many shows.
Wow! I grew up loving this woman I think others took credit for what she created as a song writer singer designer entertainer and mother right there no one can take the place she has in my heart awesomeness!
I remember watching this when I was a little boy growing up in Kentucky...I wrote her years later and she sent me a autograph picture. I was a fan for life..love love love her voice..she inspired me to sing...R.I.P Miss Summer..
She defined my generation. A voice as beautiful as her body. Her music can move me to tears one minute and to the dancefloor the next. Love & miss you soooo very much. Rest in peace my queen 👑
AND SHE REALLY WAS A QUEEN NOT THE QUEEN B COMPEURS TO DONNA SUMMER I HAD MOST OF HER RECORDS I I GREW UP LISTENING TO HER SONGS MADE ME SO HAPPY I MII HER SO MUCH THERE WILL SOMEONE LIKE HER SINGER COMPOSER AND WRITER SUCH A BEATIFUL LADY
Beautifully said, Jesse. Donna was such a special and unique artist; it’s always seemed unfair she’s not remembered more for those talents than she is as the Queen of Disco (which she is, but that’s another story). I remember watching this, too. Totally enthralled in early 1980 at the age of 9. 😉
At a time when disco was a bad word- early 1980- Donna stood out as a superstar beyond disco. I used to follow the TV Nielsen ratings closely and this special placed #17 for the week, a huge hit for ABC.
@richiguy, actually that stigma was towards the end of the Era when the media associated “Disco” with being homosexual or having a promiscuous lifestyle or as you stated “bad” prior to that the Disco Era was fun, exciting & like no other! “Sylvester” was a Disco singer that was transgender & I believe because he was not hiding his sexuality during the time when it was hush hush, his music was a reflection of him, he hit his high soprano & deep baritone notes like no other! I think he contributed to the association being a gay Disco Artist with # 1hits & a frequent at Studio 54 in NYC which was also known for both Disco & homosexuality.
I don't care much for disco, but she can sing the telephone book and make it sound great. That slot with MiMi touched me. A true legend in any century. The Queen, Donna Summer. Rest Well. Job Well Done.
I’m 14 now, and was 5 when Donna passed, but GOD would I have enjoyed to be alive during Donna’s reign. I can only imagine how it would’ve been to grow up during this era with disco and funk music.
Wouldn’t trade it for anything. Donna’s music really did define an entire decade of my life. Miss those days in so many ways, but is wonderful that the music lives on for when we need that fix. p.s. You have great taste in music! 😉
I grew up listening to this woman. I hate to say this but, they said she was a man. I was 14 or 15 years old. I never thought a man could sing like that. Then, Irene Cara comes a long and she sounds a little like DONNA. This woman could sing the map of the United States. There were a lot of singers, like Minnie, Denise, Natalie and more who beautiful voices but not as powerful as hers. Minnie Ripperton was in a class by herself. Just like Donna Summer. God rest your soul. I got out of the military in 1980 and I never saw this. This is so amazing...!
Donna Summer could have been a marvelous actress, if she had wanted it. She had the emotional range, the expressive voice and the ability to use her body that the great dramatic actresses have all had. A very multi-talented lady. Thank you for posting this program!
Nobody like Donna Summer.....I love the way she sang! She was so gorgeous......She will always be The Queen of Disco. My favorite song of hers I Love You. ❤
May 17, 2012 - May 17, 2022 It was 10 years ago today that our queen left this world, she may be gone physically but she will live on in the hearts💖of her fans and through her music, Thank you Donna for all your beautiful songs!🎼🎶👑💖💿🎤🌹🌺
Donna Summer had one of the BEST singing voices of the century! To try and pigeon hole her into Disco is absurd; she could sing whatever she chose to sing (like most Black Singers). I didn't know Mr. Robert Guillaume (BENSON) had such an amazing Baratone- WOW!! I wish she would have chosen to sing Gospel with that amazing gift....
Dim all the lights, Hot Stuff, Bad Girls and of course Last Dance are my go to for a my classic Donna "live" fix. These are some of the best and clearest audio/video we get of her at her peak. This whole concert should be on DVD!!!!
The guy in the black cowboy hat in "Last Dance" looked so starstruck when he saw Donna Summer he couldn't even dance. He sure must have fond memories, especially she is no longer with us.
What an outstanding and diversified musical artist. She makes a sensational story of each song shes ever written and sung with so much passion and vision. No other artist's songs made me dance more in the 70's. Love and Kisses ...Thanks Donna.

I saw her in concert at a casino in New Jersey in the early 90's, my first concert. Donna Summer...so, so beautiful and what a voice. I was mesmerized and I talked about it for weeks after I saw her. So heartbroken when I heard she passed away.
I remember this special. Donna was a great singer and artist. I never forgot the song she sang about divorce in this special "Starting Over Again", because my parents were going through a divorce at the same time. Her voice was incredible, and everybody knew she broke so many records with soo many number 1 hits. No one ever like the style and unmistakable voice of the great Donna Summer!!
Finally I have been able to see this fun and wonderful tv special...Release a box set of her main visual work on dvd...what a way to remember and celebrate Donna's career it would be! Thank you Tom for bringing this gem to us all Donna fans.

Wow, thought I'd never see this again! I went in the navy in 1979 and this came on during a leave home in '80 and I recorded it to a cassette tape (it would be another year before I got a VCR). I had all her albums and this was added to my Donna collection. Wore that tape out many moons ago. Forever I told my best friend and Donna fanatic about this special and the line she said, "I've been on a little diet, you know. It ain't been easy but it sure has been tight". Can't wait to actually show it to him. :D
Donna had a lot of CLASS!
Something that performers nowadays lack!
People are rewarded for being controversial today-- mean 🤔
Well, a lot of people back
then had no class
CLASS '?? SINGING LIKE SHE HAVE HURRY ???
I agree

Such a perfect control of the voice and no loss of magic and emotion. Unique talent. We miss her.

The live sequence was fantastic. Donna sings so beautiful and effortlessly. She does not need protocols.

I love Donna Summer! I use to play her albums over and over again. What a beautiful voice. She is so missed! RIP. 💜
Before Mariah and Whitney, there was THE Ms. Summer. RIP goddess.
The original Diva the Queen of Disco ... IMHO the best compared to ANY of today's artists it's too bad cancer got her
YEAH
It is still Donna!!!
Both cannot beat her!
I was so in love with Donna Summers when I was a kid. R.I.P. Queen there will never be another like you.
So amazing diva 👏
I wished Donna Summer had talked more about her experience making this

What do you dislike about disco?
A Blessed talent. You don't see this type of specials anymore. Donna was at the peak of her career not to mention she knew how to really sing.
She owns that stage she commands your attention her voice live is truly amazing
She would have been 70 later this month. RIP Donna Summer.
