What an incredible song! STING has said this song is one of his top 5 songs. As a previous post mentioned Donna's backing vocals are by Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Dionne Warwick, Lionel Ritchie, Michael McDonald, Kenny Logins, Brenda Russel, Christopher Cross, James Ingram. No question Donna had the respect from all the top singers in the industry.
She was 9 months pregnant when she filmed this video. She looks gorgeous. I remember this video playing a lot when I was a kid. The song has a hypnotic trance feeling especially when she starts singing the chorus. I feel like I am being transported to the sky.

I was 15 years old when we went on a long weekend to Amsterdam. It was the first time I'd ever stayed abroad overnight, and was a great weekend. This song was in the charts at the time, and was all over the radio. I even remember going into a record shop where this was playing on the hifi. I'm always taken straight back to that weekend whenever I hear this song!
***THE "STATE OF...." DONNA, IN 1982....*** ...this Song (a cover of the "Chariots Of Fire" composer Vangelis' 1981 tune), was the follow-up to her #10 (Sept., 1982) Pop hit, "Love Is In Control", and....we weren't READY! ...neither was DONNA.....(cont.) ...She was pregnant while promoting the Album, still fighting w/ Casablanca over her contract, Neil Bogart's (Summer '82) passing, losing backing from Geffen Records, fighting the 'Baby weight' (2:44), and still feeling the sting from her shelved 1981 Album....Donna's tune peaked at #41(!) Pop, in November, 1982...... .....It has since regained respect, now being the 'per-cursor' to "We Are The World", & the 1991 cover by Moodswings (feat Chrissie Hynde), along with the 1996 UK remixes.....
…and backing vocals by Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Dionne Warwick, Lionel Ritchie, Michael McDonald, Kenny Logins, Brenda Russel, Christopher Cross, James Ingram…. That’s pretty insane, and still Donna Summer was the best singer of them all.

Always a great song, but my favourite version id Donna's. Quincy's production was an exercise in perfection. They should teach this at colleges for whoever wants to be a musical genius.
Jon and Vangelis originally, Quincy Jones arrangement, music celebritys included (see other comments) and Donna Summer vocals make this a classic 80s track. Sometimes over looked from other Quincy Jones music.

I was reading about Jon and Vangelis and how Donna Summer made this song a hit. I never knew about this version (unless I heard it as a child in the 80s). Anyways I'm just surprised how much of the signature Vangelis-sound Quincy Jones kept. Like that weird, bit eerie tone at the very end - I assume you would cut that out if you wanted a radio hit.
@yannisgk Well, yeah, he wrote the song, and he obviously knew Donna was doing a cover version...I even think that to some extent he reached out to Donna about the song...but I guess that was pretty much it...
Oh no!!! After all these years I've seen what's wrong with this song!! It's about 4 or 5 minutes too short. It sets up the groove, goes through the verses, but needs to be extended a bit. What is the point of a groove when just as you're getting into it, it ends?
So they say, but I don't hear it. Billie Jean is a totally different vibe and tempo. I like Donna Summer, but I see why this song never made the Top 40. It's not a fun song, you can't dance to it, and just doesn't really fit her repertoire. Quincy Jones produced many studio recordings like this one with famous singers, and they all have that slick, over-produced sound. It would have been a better fit for Barbara Streisand than Donna Summer.
