Donna was underrated because she was associated with disco. But she was very talented and it's a shame that she isn't mentioned more.
Donna Summers was LITERALLY the most famous black woman on the planet in the Disco Era so PLEASE explain to me how that's UNDERRATED? What are y'all talking about?
@@earlcampbell7953 "Underrated" is the fact that hardly anybody mentions her when speaking of the greatest singers of all time. "Underrated" is forgetting that she (not Whitney Houston) was the first black female artist in heavy rotation on MTV. Yes, she was THE most famous, consistent, and successful artist outside of the Bee Gees during the disco Era, but not everybody watching this was born then or is old enough to remember it. She's not unsung, but she is definitely underrated when you consider that she had so many history making accomplishments and lesser artists receive A LOT more hype.
Donna is definitely not underrated! She's very well-known to all generations.
@@monilaninetynine3811 That's STILL not "Underrated" just because someone isn't speaking of you now, it doesn't erase what you've done because as soon as you do a special about that time period then she's gonna come up because she dominated it. People don't talk about The Bee Gees but it doesn't change the fact that prior to Michael Jackson's Thriller, Saturday Night Fever was the biggest-selling album ever. The kind of mark she left can never put her in an "Underrated" category she was a superstar, it doesn't matter that black people aren't talking about her in their petty little conversations about who's the best because I promise you that other people are.
@@earlcampbell7953 She's not as well known or celebrated as she should be in this current day and age. That's my opinion and that's all I have to say about it.
I still remember being 6yrs.old &hearing “Last Dance” 1978 all I kept thinking was she’s so beautiful-I would tell my mama to play her records every Saturday when my mom would deep clean I loved her voice her music❤️
Thank you for this story such beautiful childhood memories I have with her music👍🏼RIP MISS DONNA SUMMER🕊

@@marchmadness23 I absolutely love the song "Last Dance" ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Hands down and ten toes down, Donna Summer is the QUEEN of disco! I was a huge fan!
That's crazy how Donna Summers don't get her recognition like that she broke records in her prime and had number one singles/records before she died WOW 😳😮🤦🏿♂️
You are right. I really feel like Donna's story mirrors Whitney Houston in a way. She also received unnecessary judgement from black people. Black people also overlooked Donna heavily until she died. Oh by then, she was commemorated all over the black magazine publications at one time. If that isn't enough, many blacks also did not respect or appreciate (during the promotion for LTLYB) that her overseas acclaim came before her American success. She was not "trying to be white," she was just used to artistically immersing herself with various cultures for several years before LTLYB ever came about.
@@TheRetroWoman80 exactly
@@TheRetroWoman80 I so AGREE with your statement! When Donna was alive and making dance records in the 90s and 2000s, ppl didn't pay much attention to her. I noticed since her death in 2012, ppl all of sudden want to in a way..."worship" her now? Especially with the Kelly Rowland resemblance. Lol. I've been a fan of Donna since I was 4 when I first saw her TV special in 1980. I've seen her in concerts 4x and she even waved at me( that made my night) lol. I miss her and will always love her voice.
She just got that drive for music Donna Summer just got that drive for disco music I really don't like this go I like rap and hip hop and R&B and that's it.. disco I'm not a fan of it

Rest in peace Donna Summer amazing talented black woman that will forever be missed 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
A diamond in the rough that has so much attention and all the music labels had to do was let her do her thing and find her own way and make her own music maybe she wouldn't have been so happy now her spirit is up there with God so now she's happy and a better place rest in peace 🕊️ 🙏🏼🙏🏼😓😓😓Donna Summer
Someone should make a biopic about her. Kelly Rowland should play the part if she can act.
She played in like five movies. She's an exceptional actress, and she has a striking resemblance to Donna Summers, both are beautiful.

I agree Kelly Rowland similarize The late Great Mrs Donna Summers/The Queen👑 Of Disco 🎤🎶🔈🔉🔊🕺🏿💃🏾 that will be great movie to watch🍿🎥 🎞️🎬🎭🎫🎟️
YES I was gonna mention that. I think Kelly would do the job.
She is one of my favorite singers. I never tire of ANY of her songs, and there are too many to count. Beautiful and eclectic is how I will always remember her. She was beyond disco.
SAME HERE!!!
Mrs. Donna Summer was so beautiful.. What a legend
So much is not known about Donna. This was definitely needed and other documentaries delving deeper into her life
She is one of the most underrated singers ever and the doors she opened are even attributed to other artists. There are not many who accomplished as much as she did in the music industry. She deserves to be remembered with respect.
It’s deliberate. She was in it, not of it. She lived a very private life and her first love was being a wife and Mom THEN Singing/Art!
To me she is indeed the queen of disco. Loved her whole demeanor. Hot stuff and Bad Girls are my funky and naughty favorites. In short i love all her songs. May she rest in perfect peace 💛
I just really admired her beauty
She was a lovely woman.
She was absolutely beautiful
Donna Summer, so underrated it’s beyond belief. Her voice was and is so incredible, I still listen to her songs today in awe. MacArthur Park Suite taught me how to sing! I teach voice lessons now because of Donna’s awesome voice, phenomenal style. Rest In Peace, Angel Donna!
This video telling the story of Donna Summer was so good!! RIP to the legendary "Queen of Disco" Donna Summer🙏🏽🕊
Jesse Jackson is the last man on earth that needs to be judging anybody about anything. Besides fathering a child out of wedlock and never giving the mother a dime, he had a well-known affair for years (while still married) with singer, Roberta Flack, and even her song "Jesse" is clearly about him.
👀
don't you talk about the Great Jessie Jackson
You all know that it's rumoured that he was complicit in Dr. King's assassination right? Notice King walk pass Jesse after "Mountain Top" speech King's last
@@Elwrt455 I didn't know that it was a rumor. I thought it was a pretty much established fact. Reminds me of when Al Sharpton was going around calling Whitney Houston "Whitey" Houston and boycotting her music. I mean, don't y'all have protest marches to organize or something?
🌾👀🌾
Donna Summer hands down! A beautiful Icon.
Donna Summer was one of my childhood favorites....Love her....RIP Donna Summers💖💖

I had no idea she sold over 140 million albums. That is NO easy feat. You have to have people vibing with you on a Grand Scale, to pull off those types of numbers. And THAT in a era, where you had to physically go out, to buy your albums of choice.

I agree with you 100 percent! Donna was on fire!!!! That chick was popping out hits back to back, in my opinion!
sellout concerts as well.
This was the best story you did. But Donna Summer was by no means underrated. She was an international super star with many many hits. Love to love you Donna
She was very much a global treasure and peaked during the disco era. But mainstream did not take care her seriously beyond the 70s except for She Works Hard For The Money. She has so many gems but if it was not dance oriented music....she was ignored unfairly.
@@TheRetroWoman80 Next to Bad Girls, my second most fav Donnas album is “Mistaken Identity”. I agree with you on some of later stuff was so overlooked. “When Loves Cries” should’ve had an official video. I’m sure BET, and MTV2, would’ve given it some air play and the song would’ve charted higher.
@@verbatimmags When Love Cries was a great example of her using that wonderful head voice of hers. Another unforgettable soul stirring gem is Friends Unknown. She dedicated that to her appreciators.

They definitely played Donna she wasn't afraid to speak out they don't want people looking into her story smh.
Donna was an amazing, incredible woman. Love ❤ her.
Donna Summers was a phenomenal singer and just gorgeous. I remember her playing Steve’s aunt on Family Matters and sang Last Dance. Thanks for the more in depth research on her life. Well done.❤️
I wondered why ppl questioned her sex. You've cleared up that mystery. Racism has done a lot of damage to our ppl. I had no idea that was her daughter on My Wife and Kids. Donna's music will live on forever.
She was so good looking, how could anyone doubt she was a woman?
All of her daughters are very talented. Brooklyn is in a few movies , one is called " Rain " and she gets to sing a lot in it. Her youngest daughter Amanda is in a band called Johnnyswim with her husband and a few other musicians.
Because some men think women can't be tall or muscular. They did the dame to ciara and megan the stallion

The Beatles and others had already double albums in the sixties.
Earth, Wind, and Fire had two double albums: Gratitude and Faces.

On the Radio was one of my favorites too.
I'm into Death metal, black metal ,grind, heavy metal, progressive rock, classic rock, BUT DONNA SUMMER IS my favorite female singer... Much respect.✌️🙏🤘
My favorite crush in the 70s and 80s.
Thank for this one. I totally loved Donna Summer 👑🕊✝️
Donna also became the first female to hold down the #1 and #3 spots on the Billboard Hot 100 simultaneously. In 1979, Hot Stuff went to #1 and stayed there for 3 weeks while Bad Girls held the #3 position. Then a month those two songs switched places on the charts. Donna was able to do this TWICE! People fail to realize that, this woman made history as the female solo artist to do this. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
FYI: Donna and Melba Moore both auditioned for the role of Sheila for the Broadway musical Hair. The producers loved both ladies and other Melba the Broadway role. However, the producers liked Donna so much that, they offered her the same role (Sheila) in the traveling Europe version. The producers knew that the play would be a hit overseas and offered Donna Gaines the role. Yes, her father was pissed but her mother told her to go and follow her dreams. I'm glad Donna did!
Thank you for pointing out that "transvestite" rumors. That almost killed her career! What used to piss me off was when whenever I conversation about music and mentioned Donna's name, black ppl would right away say "Oh you know she used to be a man"! That was NEVER true! A trans person cannot give birth to a child and Donna Summer gave birth THREE TIMES in her life: 1973, 1981 and 1992. Her middle daughter played Vanessa on the ABC comedy, My Wife And Kids.
Some ppl still believed that horrible rumor until she died in 2012.
It amazes how ppl idolize her now especially, years after her death and with the Kelly Rowland resemblance . Lol
I didn't realize how amazing she was wow great research on Donna summer fantastic 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟💫

Underrated? Huh? Bruh, Donna Summers was literally the Queen Of Disco, she was the most famous woman of the 70s so you got this wrong my brother. Chaka Khan is the Queen Of Funk and Soul not Disco
To those on the outside of disco appreciation, she was highly overlooked and underrated. Like Whitney, many thought she was pop and "not black enough."
@@TheRetroWoman80 true .
@@TheRetroWoman80 Being accepted by the masses, winning all the awards, making all the money, and not being "black enough" to mf's who aren't getting the money you getting is NOT overlooked nor underrated, that's what you call, overly HATED. That's like saying MC Hammer was underrated because a bunch of can't make it mf's saying he ain't black enough. Phuhg them and who they don't think is "black enough" they ain't spending enough money to even have an opinion because they spend their dollars on clothes and beauty products, not music so how dare any of them mf's have an opinion about Whitney not being black enough? So many of the young divas (and even the old school divas) can’t or don’t compose their own songs
She was a trailblazer in so many ways
And, I was blessed to see her perform live on 14 different occasions and 1) no auto tune needed
2) sounded just as good or better than the recordings
3) I think that her humble nature is part of why she’s not as reverend as other singers
4) Ask Miss Patti Labelle what her option of Donna is….
She stayed that she was very under rated
I appreciate your thoughtfulness and research in compiling this tribute to Donna

First of all, I love Donna Summer. I think she was the whole package and that's how, in the 1970's, she reached the superstar status she richly deserved, but she was beyond Disco and willing to experiment with her music, unlike other Disco stars.
I think she was overlooked during the 1980's due to the Disco backlash and the poor management she was given by Geffen records. I still don't fully understand why, but I think her career was sabotaged. Yet she was still able to have new hits during the decade ("The Wanderer", "Love is in Control", "She Works Hard for the Money" and "This Time I Know is for Real"). Imagine all the hits she would have had if she had had the right management. For instance, Madonna was a mediocre singer, but became and remained popular because her label and her PR team did their best to promote her. In the 1970's, Donna Summer was as popular and she could have remained that way if Geffen people had been smart enough. Sadly, they weren't.
About the "Disco sucks" movement, I think it was very stupid. I'm a headbanger white man (fan of Metal and Rock), but I also like Disco, R&B, Latin music, and many other genres. I think all music is cool and you can enjoy it all if you're in the right mood. Also, the 1980-82 "Dance" songs still sounded like "Disco". They just changed the name for marketing (as you said), but the music was the same.
I love the song and actually heard it yesterday on The Groove. It is rarely played on the airways. I love Donna ❤️ 🎶 music. She had hits I keep in my Playlist! Her children are gorgeous. Donna was beautiful lady also. RIP . Will get her book xoxo. Thnks!
