How to make a SMALL Perfection Loop

  • The Perfection Loop is knot that every fly fisherman should know. It's most used when connecting leader to fly line.
    There are many wonderful videos showing you how to tie this knot. However, one of the problems when tying it the traditional way, is the difficulty in controlling the size of the loop. As trout anglers, this is especially important if you want to make small loops for an adjustable dry-dropper tag or a small loop, in lieu of a tippet ring.
    This video shows you how to do this....It's just one small adjustment.
    Hope it helps.
    Tight lines,
    Cory

    This is great and you can even go a step further - If you use a barbless hook, cinch the not all the way to the hook and you have a MICRO perfection loop. I use this often instead of a tippet ring. Make sure that when attaching the tipped to the micro loop that you do a double clinch so the connection doesn't snap. Its very strong, light and works great - landed multiple browns well over 20+ inches with this setup.

    good tip! the only downside is if you were making a loop to loop connection for the butt section of a leader you would be losing quite a bit of line from trimming the tag. I started using one of those plastic hook tools to tie it for the butt section loop and it makes small loops with minimal tag. Love the knot! I use it at work at lot not just fishing!

    yes I learned that long time ago saltwater tandem rigs inshore fishing..black fish (Tog) seabass ling .. miss those wreck bottom fishing trips in October off New Jersey shore .. Cory some great tip for the perfection loop.. I too when home like practicing all kinds of rigging knots you demonstrated thus far, but doesn't a lower profile straight off the main dropper work best on the small trout water species .. Cory wouldn't any additional resistance such as a perfection loop in freestone riffles be too much profile for light tippets ? perhaps could be good higher up on a leader and yes no longer than three four inches,,are you adopting this as a standard or an alternatives to previous tandem rigging .. always fun stuff tight lines!

    Awesome. Have you using a uni knot to create a sliding tag? It seems to stay put on the tippet very well, but not sure how it holds up to a fish strike. Thanks much for your vids! Toney

    • @OldDominionTroutBum
      @OldDominionTroutBum  3 месяца назад

      Thanks, Toney. You can use a Uni, but I don’t prefer it for this. The reason is it gets too tight and it is difficult to slide up and down, or when you do slide it-it stress your tippet out too much. I do like the Uni for putting a new tag on when the original tag gets too short.
      Hope this helps. Appreciate you watching!

    Just did this this is awsome,just wondering is it ok to tie a double surgions knot instead of using a perfection loop to tie the monofilament on the end of a polyleader to a piece of tippet.I was just thinking it might be stronger than using the perfection loop

      So tying on the leader to the micro loop probably helps prevents the hinge affect vrs the loop to loop attatchment ?

    • @OldDominionTroutBum
      @OldDominionTroutBum  6 месяцев назад

      @jimcastillo8950 you do not want you fly line out of the rod tip because it will defeat the purpose of the micro leader. You need to keep the loop inside the guides. The small loop helps it slide through the guides easily. Check out my micro leader video for more info. Tight lines.

    Here's the issue with micro perfection loop I have. Get snap and you need to break the snag! it breaks the loop. Back to tying a new micro loop. If you never get a snag it's great but.............

    • @OldDominionTroutBum
      @OldDominionTroutBum  Год назад +3

      Charles, that's no out of the ordinary. When you get stuck, a lot of the times your rig will break at the knot. Usually it is at the weakest knot (esp on light line). The perfection loop's strength is less than a clinch, davy, surgeon's, etc...

  • @billp3598
    @billp3598 8 месяцев назад

    Interesting but there is a better way that wastes far less tippet on the final tag end that you clip off when you finish tying it. You can even tie it so the fly is on the loop when you're finished. With practice, you can tie a loop so small that not even bead chain eyes on a damsel nymph will foul in the loop. Very useful on streamers and nymphs so they move freely on the loop.

    • @OldDominionTroutBum
      @OldDominionTroutBum  8 месяцев назад

      Hey Bill, this video was more for the traditional use of a perfection loop (and you are right, you can use far less tippet). I actually use a non-slip loop knot if I want a loop for my fly.
      Thanks for watching and tight lines to you.

    • @billp3598
      @billp3598 8 месяцев назад

      Whatever the use, to adjust my perfection loops, after folding a short length of tag end across the two loops and just before tightening the everything, I pull on the side of the first loop, (which will make the second loop smaller), and/or the standing part of the line (which will make the first loop smaller). Then spit and tighten.
      I was merely using tippet-to-fly as an example of how small you can make it. But I do this anywhere I use it such as loop to loop.
      If your tippet-to-fly knot is stronger than your leader-to-tippet knot, each time you lose your fly, you will also lose your tippet because the leader/tippet knot will break first every time.
      I tested many combinations of different knots in those two places and the perfection loop at the fly was the goldie locks.
      Just right. It was the strongest loop that still doesn't overpower the tippet/leader connection where I use the strong but aestheticly unpleasant double overhand knot. (Any suggestions for a stronger knot there would be welcome)
      I also find the perfection loop quick and easy to tie in the dark.
      This is all my personal preference of course.
      But I will playing around with the non slip some more. And also your way of tying the perfection loop in this EXCELLENT video, which is new and fascinating to this old knot head.
      😏👍

    • @OldDominionTroutBum
      @OldDominionTroutBum  8 месяцев назад

      @@billp3598 Nice of you to say, Bill. Appreciate it.
      I agree that your tippet to fly has to be the weakest link (for the lack of a better word). As unpleasant as that double (or triple) overhand knot is-it flat out works. I have tested the perfection loop as the fly line to leader connection with a non-slip loop knot on false albacore (they are tackle busters) on 9 and 10 weights and never had a perfection loop fail. But that double overhand knot doesn't either.
