Patterns that Improve Your Nymph Box! Attractors, Junk Flies, and Situational Bugs!
As a fly fisherman and fly tyer, we always strive to have the perfect nymph box for trout. So once you have it, how can you make it better?
Once you have your core patterns in your box, it is time to add attractors, junk flies (mops, squirmy worms, eggs), terrestrials, etc...They all play an important role.
During certain times of the year when bug activity subsides, other types of patterns are needed. Patterns that may stand out from the crowd. When we encounter high, murky water or other adverse conditions, we need bugs that help us during these times. Or it may simply be the type of water or stream we are fishing. When we go to the stream, we must be ready for anything. Adding these type...

Whether you are a beginner fly fisherman/fly tyer or an experienced one, filling your fly box with nymphs for trout can be daunting. What patterns do you use? How many? What weight? What sizes? Weight is especially important for Euro Nymphing. Instead of taking the shotgun approach and tying a ton of different patterns, (which ultimately leads to having a bunch of patterns in your box that you'...
Fly Fishing in MONTANA: FANTASTIC Dry-Dropper Action
Просмотров 8 тыс.2 месяца назад
Spent a beautiful late September afternoon fly fishing in Montana. Using a Dry-Dropper with a long Euro Nymphing leader was the ticket. The water was shallow and clear. Also, I noticed an occasional bug on top, and a lot of the time, a fish rose for it. The dry-dropper enabled me to cover both the top and underneath. The long euro leader helped keep my fly line off the water, giving me perfect ...
Fall Fly Fishing in MONTANA: Streamers, Dry-Dropper, and Nymphing Success

Spent a late September day fly fishing Rock Creek in Montana. Being versatile was key. I used Streamers, dry-dropper, and Euro Nymphing techniques. It was an incredible day of fishing. I caught Brown Trout, Rainbows, Cutthroat Trout, and Cutbows (with a couple of Whitefish thrown in!). The temps started out cool (the high 40s) and got up to 80 degrees. I started fishing with Jigged Streamers, u...

Take EURO NYMPHING to Another Level: PERFECT Your Drifts!
Просмотров 14 тыс.7 месяцев назад
Getting the perfect drift while nymphing is crucial. It is THE way to put more trout in the net. But do you HAVE to get a 20-30 foot long in the exact seam on every cast? The answer is no. Do you always have to fish within a rod's length? No. Sometimes all you need are 5-10 foot drifts for success (sometimes shorter!). The important part is they need to be perfect. Concentrating on shorter, per...

Awesome video. What lb tippet were you using ?
Cory I agree on the scissors. Fortunately for me I have a small sode business where I sharpen chainsaw blades, knives, skillsaw blades and yes scissors. I have had the same pair of Dr. Slick scissors for over 15 years. I have had tibsharpen them twice. Several years ago I had an accident where I had to have 37 stitches. When tbe doctor got done I asked him about the scissors and hemostats laying on his table. I asked him what he does with them and he said they throw them away after they are used. Well...I he gave me the scissors and hemostats and I use the scissors to cut wire and materials that dull good scissors. Since then me and him have fished together in smallmouth tournaments and he has given me bags of scissors and hemostats. I guess what I am saying is if you know how to sharpen razor scissors and you don't use them on hard materials they will last a lifetime. I will say buck tail is tough on Dr slick scissors. Again, I use the old scissors the doctor gave me. I wished I lived closer....I would sharpen your scissors for you. Save money big time.
Thoughtful and helpful, thank you.
Glad it is helpful, Iain. Thanks for watching!
When you jig the streamer do you wait for the leader to straighten out to jig again
Josh, you want to stay in contact the best way you can and really control the slack on the drop so you can see or maybe feel a strike. You don't need these big moves with your rod tip. Just twitches and 6 inch movements. Hope this helps.
Great instruction, especially for beginners. I have been trying trout flies for forty years and one still learns was impressed with your clear explanation.
Thank you, Jim! Nice of you to say. Appreciate you watching and tight lines!
First I heard about turning point away. That point alone will help me. Thanks, Old Chief
Glad it helped, Old Chief! Appreciate you watching.
Thanks for the videos, big fan! Have subscribed! Question: assuming the slideable dry fly tag should be fluoro (vs nylon), since its not really floating on the surface, but rather being pulled down under the water by the weight of thr nymph?
Thank you, SMH! Yes, on the fluoro. I even use it for tippet when dry-fly fishing. Hope this helps. Appreciate you watching and the sub. Tight lines!
How do you stop the dropper from twisting around the main line?
If you watch the whole video I actually address your exact question. Tight lines to you.
@@OldDominionTroutBum ah, I will watch the whole video, thanks
What do you think is the best time for fishing in Montana ?
Jaxson, I like July or the end of September. Both great times.
Cory, How do you use the perfection loop to tie on a streamer and get that nice small loop? Thanks, Pat
Pat, if I want to do a loop to a streamer, I use a Non-Slip loop knot. It is much easier when tying to a hook.
What weight euro nymphing rod are you using ? Thanks
Tristan, I'm using a T&T 10ft 9in 2wt in this video. Appreciate you watching.
What is your gear setup, mate ? What line are you using ?
Tristan, I have my setup in the video's description. Tight lines.
Cory, Regarding managing weight, is it your preference to fish the lightest fly that will get you to depth? Thanks, Pat
Most definitely, Pat. The lighter you go, the more natural it will be to the trout. Appreciate you watching.
Cory, one of your very best videos, and you have so many great ones. I find it so helpful when you describe your flies, the type and size, whether one or two flies and which is the point vs the dropper, and which the fish hit on. I also love your descriptions of your casts and what you were trying to do with each cast. I cannot thank you enough for all your work to share knowledge, technique and experience. Hope we can meet someday so I can thank you in person. Many thanks, Pat
Thank you, Pat! Nice of you to say, and glad the videos are helpful. Thanks so much for watching. I'll be the guy with a cigar on the stream!
Just hapened to catch this---I'm pretty new to tying but the Gulff black resin comes in several types (viscosity) so do you use thin, thick, Black Magic or does it matter? What you applied appears to be pretty thick. Thanks
Dennis, it really doesn't matter. I was using Black Magic. But honestly, it is just as easy to put UV resin over the fly first, hit it with the light, then take a black marker and make your wingcase on top of the resin. Then put a touch of resin back over the wingcase and hit it again with the light. Hope this helps.
@@OldDominionTroutBum Thanks--very much appreciated.

Cory, Another great video. Wondering, what net carrying rig do you prefer? Thanks for all of the wonderful information you share. Your videos are my favorite. Pat
Thank you, Pat! The net is a Frabill 18x13. The best $30 you can spend. Watch this video here and you will see how I set it up: ruclips.net/video/wiou1rwSfMg/видео.htmlsi=s956_vRFhhwa1ldN Appreciate you watching. Tight lines!
Finally took the time to tie up some Jack Daniels’ for this upcoming Spring and Summer. I was excited to pitch them in so I tied one on yesterday and was happy to learn that they also dominate in the winter season as well. Straight to the top of the confidence box with the JD, thanks again for sharing Sir.
Glad the JDs are being good to you right away, Neil! It is my top fly. Continued success to you. Thanks for letting me know. Tight lines to you!
Hey Cory, going to start tying flies. I’ve been watching your tying videos and I wanted to let you know that they are awesome! The best I’ve found on RUclips, you do a great job demonstrating each fly. Got a few more to watch, just wanted to say thanks again for sharing your gift with us.
Hey William. Super nice of you to say! Glad the videos have been helpful. Appreciate you watching and good luck with your fly tying adventure!
Top advice pal, well done.
Appreciate it, Lindsay! Cheers!
So far, this is my favorite fly tying channel. 🙂
Thank you, George. Appreciate you watching!
Awesome thanks for sharing, I really like your method of tying. I am just getting started tying flies, I’ll be watching all your tutorials. I’ve really enjoyed and have gotten a lot from your fishing videos, thanks for all you do.
Glad the videos have been helpful, William. Thanks for watching, and good luck with your tying!
Hi, I keep coming back to watch this! Just wondering, if you have a bow in your sighter, is there not too much slack? Also, how do you hold up your flies at range with the slack in the system? Thanks
Hey Tom. You. want to have a nice controlled bow in the sighter. Just enough to pick up movements. Watch this at the 49:00 mark, I will explain it: ruclips.net/video/oPmcAZZmf-0/видео.htmlsi=AFRZLX4fR5ozNSz3 You can hold your flies up at a distance, but water depth plays a part. The shallower the water, the farther away you can fish. The deeper the water, the harder it is because your bugs will sink back towards you. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
@@OldDominionTroutBum Thanks for the reply - just wondering though, you said if the sighter is completely sight then you are pulling the flies through the drift; (how) do you hold them up while still maintaining a bow in the sighter, or is it completely natural dead drift without the need to hold the flies up?
As a fly angler who will often use a loop knot to attach my bugs (often very small bugs), I will typically use the perfection loop - even w 7x tippet. Understanding the anatomy of the loop helps to keep it really small, ie the correct proportion of loop size to fly size. Whereas, the hemo hack works, it is difficult to maintain a consistent loop size. Cool hack, but inconsistent (for me anyway 😊)
Stephen, you may want to check out my other video on how the make your loop small. But for this application, it doesn’t need to be super small. Tight lines to you.
Awesome information. Thank you.
Gals it was helpful, Dave. Appreciate you watching!
So you pay 150 euro for a plastic thing , and then have to buy , paracord, velcro ,swiffels and so on ..to make it more usefull 😮
Didn’t say you had to. I said that’s what I do.
New to tying. I ve been watching you videos for over a year. Been following your instructions on easier flies. Decided to do the JD. I cant find anyone who has the dark gray khaki. Can you direct me to another company who has a similar color. Since I have never used any kind of cdc I dont really know what matches. And I am like 150 miles to my closest shop. Thanks
Hey Ron. Fulling Mill CDC in Natural Grey will work for you. Appreciate you watching and good luck!
@@OldDominionTroutBum thanks
What size tippet are you using when you pull in these big fish ? I’m normally using 5x or 6x while euro nymphing but I’m not sure if I should be doing that with 20-23” rainbows
Hey Garrett. I use 5x-7x. I use 5x on the Madison River in MT, where you get a steady dose of heavy current and big fish and don't have a problem getting them in quick. In this video, I was using either 6x or 7x. With the tip of the rod, stretch of the leader, and quality tippet-you can put some pressure on them. Tight lines to you.
What percentage of strikes are you feeling vs seeing only?
Hey Nick-I’m seeing all of my strikes. You really want to move away from feeling to seeing.
One thing I forgot to mention and I think you'll get a kick out of it. My fishing buddy calls it the fentanyl fly, because it's a killer pattern and fish really get hooked on it 🤣.
Haha. That is AWESOME! Tight lines and I hope they stay hooked on it!
Nice one, m8
Appreciate it, Dave!
Very clever.
Appreciate it. Tight lines, FCTV!
@OldDominionTroutBum Thanks! 👍
Hi Cory. Thank you for the confidence builder in this video. I may have missed the answer but what is the weight limit of the point fly when casting with the micro leader?
Glad it helps, Jeff. There really is no weight limit. I have thrown jigged streamers with 4.8mm beads with this leader. What gets affected is the recovery of your rod. The heavier weight you use, the longer it takes your rods to recover. This is especially true with longer 2 weights. That being said, this leader really excels when nymphing with 3.3mm beads and less.
Looks really good, I am definitely going to tie some. Since the fly is tied upside down, should the vice be inverted before coloring with the sharpie? That way the top is brown when fished
Thanks, Nathan. It will work for you. Aaaaaaah, the million-dollar question. It is a misconception that bugs ride parallel to the bottom. Most hang straight up and down, with a jig hook inverting and riding slightly at a 45-degree angle. It really doesn't matter what side you color because bugs get banged around in the current all the time. They ride upside down, right side up, sideways, etc... For me, It is just easier and more pleasing to the eye to do it my way. Hope this helps and good luck to you.
@ thanks for taking the time to reply and explain
What other hook would you recommend?
I like the Dohiku 302 SP jig hook, as well.
@@OldDominionTroutBum Thanks for the info. Was going to use Fulling Mills 5045, it's a little shorter but I have it on my bench.
@dianapabers8366 that is a great hook as well. It will work for you.
@@OldDominionTroutBum As I've said before, you're the best.
Appreciate the kind words on the Sunny Side. And glad you’ve had a chance to use them. Great video as always, keep it up my friend. Hope to see you again at the Denver fly fishing show this year!
Sure thing, Hans! It is a great one. Unfortunately, I can't make the Denver show this year, but I will be back! Appreciate you watching. Hope you are well, my friend.
Cory, excellent video. Really appreciate that you also list what size beads you tend to use with various weight sizes. As I look at your videos to tie these nymphs, it seems you only use copper beads (sometimes you specify "tungsten", sometimes "slotted," sometimes nothing else cited). Do you ever use any other color beads besides copper? If not why? I can easily distinguish a 2.3 bead from a 3.3. If I don't have a 3.3 for comparison, I will see that the 2.8 is larger than the 2.3, but would not on its own know it was a 2.3. So I tend to use different color beads for 2.3, 2.8, and 3.3 when tying on the same size hook (eg a Walt's Worm) Any other way to distinguish for those of us with older eyes? Different color hot spots for each weight? The Walt's Worm as you tie it, performs very well in MA and Rangeley region of ME: ruclips.net/video/LfpS43ezpvQ/видео.html
Appreciate it! I do like copper, but I use a lot of silver on certain patterns, such as a France fly and France midge, and also the Culirojas. I will also use silver on some Walts and light metallic pink. I separate bead sizes by rows, so it helps me. But you could take a sharpie and make a dot on top of the 2.8 beads, so it stands out for you. I know a lot of guys that do that. Hope this helps and glad that Walt's is working for you. That Rangeley area of ME is special. Tight lines!
Could you tell me what material clip you have for your vise?
Hey Travis. It is a Renzetti Material Clip. Tight lines.
As someone who has fished Barbless since 1978, I can say it is the Only Way to Go! Another Positive is if you stick it somewhere where you dont want to you can get it out than having to possibly go to an Urgent Care!
That's right, Tony! You can pull it out and keep fishing!
@OldDominionTroutBum ..agree! more fish= win win!
Any hints for the old guys that don’t see that well? I have no problem casting the micro leader but seeing it is anther thing altogether. I have even tried all the bright colored waxes. I usually have to use a larger diameter sighter just to be able to see it. Great video, I always enjoy your videos especially when you are fishing the Madison. We fish the Madison from May to October each year.
May to October on the Madison sounds like Heaven! The only other suggestion (aside from going thicker) is to tie a bright-colored piece of sighter material on your sighter above your tippet ring. Use a Uni knot and leave the tags as long as you can get away with so you can see it. Hope this makes sense. Good luck, and thanks for watching!
Seems like cutting off the other line for the dropper tap would make more sense, in that, the dropper won't get tangled as soon
Gregory, like I say in the video…keep your tag 3-4 inches and you will never have that problem. It never tangles.
Thank you so much for this video!!! Tied my very first flies ever on Friday. Caught a nice rainbow with this mob the next day. For a fly tying beginner like me, this couldn’t have been a better feeling.
Congratulations! Glad it was helpful! It is the ultimate feeling in fly fishing...Tying, then catching fish on our own creation. Cheers to many more. Tight lines!
Hi Is that euro line? And what weight bug are you throwing? I feel like I’m trying to learn but practicing with too much weight. Almost 1g Thanks
Hey Brett. I am using a euro fly line, except my leader is very long. It is approx 30 feet with my tippet to the fly. In this video, I had a 3.3 or a 2.8mm bead on. I suggest you practice with a single 3.3mm bead and get really good at it. A 3.3mm bead is approx .35g
Dude you killed it great time but man how you explain how they swim and how they actually move and how you fish it was more valuable than anything else that's what most people don't know you just shared the Holy Grail treasure right there much respect brother in piscifun
Glad it was helpful, Doug! I appreciate you watching. Tight lines to you!
Such a good video with an added notation from me; for anyone who has not or is not doing so, you can take watching these videos to the next level if you watch them at home on your smart TV. You will see and hear much more than you do on your iPhone, iPad, or computer. As do many, I have a large screen smart TV with a good sound system. This is a much better viewing and listening experience which I highly recommend for anyone watching these videos. Incredible experience!!
Thank you, Charles! Really nice comment. Much appreciated!
Love all your videos but the last two were flat out HOMERUNS, especially for us newer guys. Getting started can be a bit overwhelming. Every video you watch or article you read convinces you that you need to carry that bug or item with you. Suggestion… how about a video on what you’re carrying while you’re on the water? I know I’m carrying way to much stuff 😂
Thank you, Swoosh! Appreciate it. I am definitely a believer in "less is more." I will be doing a video very soon on what I carry. Thanks for watching and tight lines!
