Mark, you are the man! It was a pleasure meeting you! SUPER nice of you to say. I'll let you know if I need to scratch that Steelhead itch. Tight lines to you, my friend!
Cory, the way you surgically, methodically pick apart a trout stream is simply amazing. With obvious productive results. Learned a lot as usual from your videos! Thanx tight lines!
Man I love the technicality of your videos. I have completely re-adjusted my fishing style and technique due to your videos and info. Please keep the videos coming!
Thanks for the detail on longer casts / shorter drifts. This helped me conceptualize effective drift lengths for varying cast distances. Always picking up something new. Thank you for all the knowledge you are sharing.
Been watching you for a couple weeks now and I’ve really started using your techniques and it has approved my catch rate by a lot . Also helped me catch my pb bow today. Keep up the good work and tight lines!
Man I’m a little jealous of how soft your rivers seem. Finding areas like that on my home rivers in NE Oregon here are pretty tough. Mostly a lot faster water. Love your videos man. I always learn so much for your content. You’re really good at explaining techniques while you’re fishing. Great video. Loved the long form
Appreciate it, NightSnacks! We are blessed with some diverse rivers out here. Glad you enjoy the videos and are getting something out of them. Thanks so much for watching and tight lines to you!
Hey Cory! Not sure how I missed this one. You are one of the few guys I watch like a hawk to pick up any tips I can and you never fail me. Great day despite those conditions and the brookies were plentiful. Thanks as always for the video and Tightlines my friend!
Very impressive as usual Cory!! I’d love to fish streams with that many fish…. I went today for a bit and only used that one dropper, the drop dead jack daniels!!! It’s a killer!!! It’s my new proven go to over the Walt’s!!!! Thanks again Cory!!!!
Super helpful for me. Thank you. I fished that same section two weeks ago and struggled with some of the angles you talked through. I want to go back and try what I learned from watching and listening to you. I also caught a good percentage on the dropper and had some brookies. But, man that one brookie you caught was beautiful. Heck of a fish. Thanks as always.
I’ve watched all your videos numerous times. I love them all, such detailed explanations and excellent tips. I just switched to a micro leader based on your success and recommendation. The next purchase is a new euro rod….cant decide between and T and T 10’ 2wt or the 10’9” 2wt…rod will be just dedicated to euro nymphing but I don’t fish rivers any bigger than Penns Creek or the Gunpowder. Love to hear your thoughts or recommendation. Thank you Cory
Hey Corey. Appreciate it and glad the vids have been helpful! I would recommend the 10ft 2wt for those size streams. It is a rod that excels with a micro leader and can even throw a WF2 dry fly line, jig streamers and dry-dropper. It is probably my favorite of all the Contacts. You will love that rod.
Cory! Brother! Great educational analysis of each scenario. I’m amazed at how quick you get fish off the hook and back in the water, kudos! I seem to have issues with the more slippery skin of rainbows, so much harder to handle, do you notice that too? Thanks for sharing 👍🏻.
Thank you, Scott! Appreciate it brother! And yes-rainbows for whatever reason love to go nuts when you touch them. If you find out how to calm them down-let me know! Appreciate you watching!
Hey Cory, I been a fly fisher most of my life but never have given much thought to Euro nymphing. My Dad has always been my fishing partner and I lost him about a year or so ago. I've been wanting to get back to fly fishing but wasn't able to get motivated. I stumbled across some of your videos this fall/winter and have watched a bunch of them. Enough to get me excited and make me decide to give Euro nymphing a try. I think the one video that truly got me, was your spring trip to the Smith River in southern VA. I live in NC. but the Smith is what I consider my home water. I can be there in a little over an hour. I don't have a Euro rod yet but do have a 10' rod (tip flex so not the best for Euro) and bought some Euro line to go with it. I'm also using a mono rig -20' of Maxima Chameleon, 4' slighter material and 3-4 feet of 6x tippet - dropper rig. That is an interesting rig to cast but after a little practice it does get easier. I'm hoping when I buy a Euro rod it will help. Ok, enough of the back story. I do have a few questions from watching your videos and then attempting to put them into practice.: 1- From your videos I find it hard to tell how far you are typically casting in your videos. When you say (for instance) you are casting 25' are you taking into account the rod length, so In my case with a 10' rod a 25' cast would be 15' of line outside my tip or would it be 25' of line outside the tip? 2- I find I'm having trouble with determining when I'm at depth. Sometimes I can feel my flies bouncing on the bottom but a lot of times I can't. What can I do to make sure I'm at the proper depth? 3- This kind of goes along with #2. How can I tell if I'm using the correct weight bead? Sometimes I'll pick up some trash on my flies, which tells me they've been on the bottom but sometimes not. I'm not sure if I'm at the bottom, close to the bottom or way off the bottom. 4- I remember in one of your videos you spoke about the fact of "if you only feel your strikes" your probably missing a bunch. For the most part I seem to be feeling my strikes more than anything. Do you have any advice on how I can improve my strike detection? I know this was long winded but keep up the good work. Your videos are fantastic!
GG, I'm sorry you lost your Dad and fishing buddy. This is a lot to unpack here-perhaps you can do a Virtual one-on-one with me to help you with all of this. Reach out to me through my website: www.olddominiontroutbum.com/contact I'm happy to help you out. Thanks so much for watching.
Great video Cory, Finally got a chance to get out this weekend. My first time euro. applied eaht I learned form your videos, Ordered all of the same leader material. What a result! Thanks you.
Awesome video Corey 👏 I know how frustrating it can be on windy days,so nice work adjusting and getting it done! Glad to see you having an excellent year so far ! Nice mix of flies , and the Walt’s in a size 14 has been killing it for me also! noticed you gave a shout out to Tony there in the end , if it was for me much thanks , if not still love you anyway 😂ha ha ! Tight lines
Haha-That was another Tony, I met on the stream that day! Glad you are busting them this year. It has been one heck of a spring with all of the water. It is keeping all the trout nice and happy! Thanks for watching, my friend. Tight lines to you!
Hey Paul. I like the 3.25 on my 2wt. Still great balance and even lighter. The 3.5 is an awesome reel and I still use it on my 3wt. It has nothing to do with fatigue or casting…just personal preference. Thanks for watching!
Wonderful Cory. I pick up something with everyone of your videos. Question about selecting bugs. I normally try to stay with something that works for example the stone pony or a walt’s. At times I pick other bugs like a pheasant tail. What directed you to use the Spanish Bullet?
Thank you, James! There is a method to my madness. I'll look at the conditions (sunny, water clarity, size bugs, and pressure). That is where I begin. As I fish, I'll start rotating my bugs, especially if I am in a 'fishy" spot and get no strikes. I'll make sure I'm getting perfect drifts, then I'll change colors and contrast first. Let's say I start out with a Walt's, I'll switch to a Spanish bullet (like in this case). It is completely different. Sometimes, that is what it takes. The water had a limestone green tinge to it and black shows up well in it. They hit it right away, so I ended up using it a lot that day. It pays to have light bugs and dark bugs. Flash, no flash. Natural looking. And some with movement. Hope this helps. It is something I can write forever about....
No one does it like you do. The way you analyze each situation and then describe an appropriate strategy is without equal. On a side note, I've noticed a lot of PA videos from you of late. Is this for contingent reasons, or are you preferring Central PA to some of your old haunts, like the Catskills?
Appreciate it, Alex! Super nice of you to say!! I have been in PA a lot (it is just closer to me), but will be getting back to the Catskills. It is a special place to me and just oozes with fly fishing history. Thanks for watching, my friend!
Love the way you've trained Mr. Brownies and Mr.Brookies to jump directly into your net ...that takes some serious fish training and skill:)...maybe euro nymphing could be become a new international sport category at the Paris Olympics this year 😃...great techniques, river craft/positioning and detailed explanations for us all to learn from...thanks so much for sharing as ever. Just out of interest Cory, the river flow rate / depth looks good and the beautiful fish seemed to be feeding steadily thru the day ...may I ask how did you previously/typically rig up to fish similar conditions before you finessed your euro nymphing / mono leader / tight lining techniques and how did your catch rates/enjoyment levels compare?...thank you Ps. as the weather improves, having some great fishing for local wild brownies and grayling with your slim Jack Daniels (16's and 18's)👍tight lines
Lots of years of training those brownies and brookies, TK! If they have an Olympic team...I'm in! I have been doing this since I was 7 years old. My Dad taught me this technique using worms and 2 lbs test on a 8.5ft full flex rod. He taight me how to cast and watching the leader at the surface for strikes. Once, I starting getting it, I replaced worms with nymphs and split shot (before tungsten). I was Euro Nymphing before I knew it was such a thing. To me it was just "trout fishing". The equipment changed and I saw the usefulness of it-so I just evolved with it. I read George Daniel's first book in 2009/2010 (I think). It was the first time I heard the term "Euro Nymphing". I read the first page and I was like..."well, that's what I do. I Euro Nymph!" I have tried every leader formula out there, but was always comfortable using long, light leaders because that is how I was taught by my Dad. I just got better over time because of was/still am so passionate about it. I owe it all to my Dad-he was ahead of his time... Glad that Jack Daniel's is working for you! Tight lines to you, my friend!
Thanks! When it is windy, I may try to adjust first depending on the situation/area. But more times than not, it will be a weight change, especially if I see the wind grabbing my sighter.
Damon-everything is situational but if you have the current coming at you, then you can. Streams don’t always flow perfectly left to right or right to left. Also, you can make short, efficient drifts far away….working the stream in short segments. Lastly, not every cast is directly across the stream, some go up and come back to you.
@OldDominionTroutBum hi.. thanks...pakistan is a mountain country with abundance of trout waters... has 4 mountain ranges and over 600 peaks over 10000ft... so it's glacier melt streams filled with boulders quite big in Size every where.... rainbow and brown trout are in abundance.... thanks
@OldDominionTroutBum thanks.... trout size is 11 to 16 inches and I want a medium range good set up that I could use for long with the best of rod sensitivity.....your kind assistance will be highly appreciated. Thanks... budgets would be hopefully enough for such set up

Are you now preferring the straight 29' of bi-color sighter vs. the 18-24ft of yellow tied to 5' of bi-color sighter? Simplicity? One less knot?
I am. I have used it on and off this way for a couple of years. You can go the other way and it is great, but I do like the simplicity of no knots.
