How to tie the JACK DANIEL'S: Top Confidence Fly

- The Jack Daniel's is an original pattern of mine and it has quickly become one of my confidence flies. I like generic, non-flashy, no big hot spot bugs when I encounter clear water and sunny days or when I'm fishing pressured streams. The Jack Daniel's checks all those boxes. It can represent a mayfly, caddis or even a small stone fly. It has the fast sinking attributes of a perdigon with the movement of a soft hackle.
It shines on a Euro Nymphing rig in sizes 16 and 14. It's a faster sinking fly that has tons of movement from the sparse CDC collar. You can use it as your point fly or on a dropper.
The name Jack Daniel's came to me after fishing the Little J in Central, PA. I hadn't name this fly yet and was catching fish all day on it. I ended up catching a 21 inch Brown Trout with it. After the day, my buddies and I were talking and we thought it was fitting to name it after Troutbitten's term for 20 inch plus trout. "Whiskey"...thus the Jack Daniel's was born.
I can't promise you a whiskey, but I can promise you if you add this to your box, it will put some trout in your net.

Recipe:
Hook: size 16 and 14
Bead: Copper 2.3mm - 3.5 mm
Thread for Body: Danville 6/0 Beige
Thread for dubbing loop: Semperfli 30D (GSP)
Dubbing: Hends Spectra #46 (color says Peacock Green but looks Black)
CDC: dark grey khaki or dark brown
Marker: Black
Use your favorite UV resin

Just tried this fly over the weekend in the PNW, and had massive success with it. The fish wouldn’t take anything: perdigons, hare’s ears, pheasant tails, frenchies, blowtorches… I tried it all. Then popped this one on, and the fish hammered it nonstop. The fast sinking body and robust soft hackle are a strong combination. Great pattern.

Another great pattern Cory. I tie a similar fly and after I color the thread for the rib, I twist it really tight, this gives a 3D rib. I just don't put too much pressure on it as I rib it up the hook. Thanks for the tying tips. I always learn something helpful from your videos.

Hi Cory, Since using the Jack Daniels, I have increased my catch rate dramatically. Had lots of fun in the spring and now last week on the LJ the fish were just attacking it. It was nonstop action. Had one hit it as it hit the water, another at the end of the drift and several inbetween. Thank you for the video.

This fly has been so unbelievably productive that I can’t even say it any better way. My girlfriend only Euro-nymphs and caught six West Branch Delaware browns and rainbows on it in under an hour. I’ve been using it with extreme effectiveness. There’s just something about it that puts it beyond other patterns. Very easy and fun to tie also….. thanks for sharing this pattern and all your other content too!!

Such a cool looking fly. Love how you came up with the name. On a side note. In one of your videos you had mentioned briefly that your t & t 10 9 2 wt worked well with an under weighted dry fly line. I'm guessing a 1 wt line. I just picked up that rod and was looking for some dry fly options for it. Thanks Cory for always answering everyones questions here. Hope you have a great fishing season.
Thank you, Bill. The 10 9 2wt easily casts a 1wt line or a 2wt. If you get a 2wt line, make sure it is a finesse/delicate/technical type-a true 2wt. Most lines today are overweighted, so if you find a finesse line-they work great.

Remarkably similar to a fly pattern known throughout the UK as a yellow owl which originated as a wet fly on Loch Leven. Nice bug.

First, really love and appreciate your videos. Second, I can't believe how good you are at casting, I sit and watch your videos over and over just searching for little nuggets of information. Third, it seems that you only tie nymphs on jig hooks as far as I can tell, I prefer them myself, is there any case you don't? Last, I think it would be cool to see a video of your fly box/boxes. I do use a ton of jig hooks, but I also like traditional straight nymph hooks like the Hanak 230. A lot of times I’ll tie perdigons with them and use a slotted bead on it. Kinda of giving homage to how the Spanish tie them - it is a nice look. I also love the Dohiku 644-it’s a curved caddis style hook. I use a lot of inverted beads with that hook.

Have you ever considered using a split thread method with a tool like the Smhaen thread splitter instead of a dubbing loop? It’s supposed to decrease bulk.
I use that method all the time. If you watch some of my other tying videos, you’ll see. But for this fly, I switch over to GSP so I can decrease the bulk. You can see how it slips behind the bead as if there is nothing there. You can do it if you want, but I prefer this method.
Whiskey in Utah for brown trout and almost for cutts. Love the dubbing inside the loop to help the CDC stay put. This is now how I do most of the CDC flies. Another great video with great techniques. Hats off and tight lines.

Hi Cory, hope u r well…love this pattern…you’ve really helped my nymph bodies tying consistency…may I ask which UV lamp you are using these days …I’m using Solarez bone dry resin with a laser pen torch which seems to smoke it with fumes …maybe I need to use to the laser pen in short bursts rather than a 10 sec ish single blast …thanks as ever, all the best
Hey TK- glad you love the pattern. It is one of my go-to's for sure.
I use a Raidzap Pro 365. It is rechargeable and does a great job. It does sound like your light is frying it too quick. I would definitely try the short bursts. Or of course, buy more fly-tying stuff, because that's what we do!

I did. I was up early and out before the crowds and the heat. Happy I tied a few last night. I stopped counting after 20. Question for you Cory, when you are fishing two flies on average how far apart are you bugs ?

Whipped up a few of your JD’s, but modified the rib by doubling up thread prior (colored rusty brown) and spinning CW with Cal Bird tool. Gives abdomen a little more definition, but still sleek after UV. Also used Brown Tungsten bead instead of Copper. These minor changes better match aquatic insects in my home stream. Great pattern @OldDominionTroutBum ! Careful calling Jack Daniel's a 'whiskey' however, some folks across the pond might beg to differ! 🤓 I tied a few of these tonight ( with a couple drams of whisky ) and really had to scour my materials to get a thread that didn't get too dark after the resin. I think you’ve caused a run on this color, lol! Can’t seem to find beige right now. Rookie question…do you use waxed or unwaxed? I’ve seen it both ways. Great stuff man. I’ve been euro style for a few years but you’ve inspired me to go micro and now begin tying bugs. Really see the value in creating my own ammo and keeping it thin! Do you fish nymphs tied on jig hooks as the top fly or only as the dropper? I never fish jig nymphs as the top fly, but there are much more beautiful jig patterns than patterns tied on shrimp hooks and I probably get it wrong.
Anton, I fish jigs hooks on the dropper and on the bottom (or just single fly). There are no written rules. I just like how they invert the fly, so you get better hook penetration in the top lip. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.

Today, I was lucky to catch 2 trout at once on both nymphs. I thought that I hooked one and the second was following it.

Cory, I really like your tie. It has worked for me, but I have some problem when applying resin. I have tried to follow your suggestion by applying a small amount, but most often the body seems to absorb the resin and discolor or darken the body. I have tried both Loon and UV Craft. I have also tried a light coat of super glue instead of the resin, which seems to work better, I still get too much discoloration. Your bodies look so bright…..any suggestions?
Hey Donald. It sounds like your UV light is dull. You may have to change the battery. If it isn't cured well enough, it will remain wet underneath.
It's Ok to get some darkening, that is normal. But when the UV light hits it, it should cook it immediately. Just as long as you put a thin coat on and hit it with the light right away with a full charge you should be good.

@@OldDominionTroutBum I’ve seen those. I was looking into getting the SwissCDC multi clip minus. I know it’s a little more pricey but I like that it has markings on it, it’s made of stainless steel, it’s got a pointed end, and has high clamping strength. Do you have any thoughts/experiences with it?
@westsidewil I know of it. Haven’t used it, but I like it because of the markings. I put markings on mine to make sure I always have the correct materials.

so cool,, Dominic trout bitten is a favorite here on youtube.. Corey wonderful ties,, i will be tying some JD whiskies.. hoping to soon trip ny upper west branch and east branch Delaware..so far petty good
favorite daily reports i like reading daily flows stream conditions @ Dettes flies /West branch anglers/ and Delaware River club online.. Hoping eventually get to my camp on the upper Eb take do circles all around wb too hope no major flooding.. focused on all regional county weather radar forecasts keeping fingers crossed for pleasant moderate weather,, take the rain over hot drought conditions any season.. the heat though not a fan of myself.. gl ty enjoy tight lines!

I tied up a few of these in different sizes over the summer when I first started tying, I finally was able to get out and do some fly fishing this week up in Oklahoma (Im in Texas) these flies really made my trip so enjoyable I had a moment one evening where it was just one rainbow after another on one of these tied in a size 18! love watching your videos - am in Wales in th Uk and have tied a few of them up and had good success with them - I love the simplicity of your patterns and I think thats a key aspect of tying to catch wild brownies-have you tried these in any other bead colour and can I ask which colour you feel is always best?

I do tie it in an Olive for BWOs (using Danville 6/0 light olive), Dun CDC and a silver bead.
That being said-the way I tie it in the video is my favorite. I turn to it a lot in clear, pressured streams (sunny days). A copper bead has always been my go-to in these conditions.

Haha. That’s awesome, Alex. Appreciate it! This hook is a Hanak 400. I really like that hook. I also like the Hanak 230 (a straight nymph hook, I’ll use slotted and inverted beads w it), the Dohiku 644 (I use inverted beads with it) and the 302SP. I use these hooks most often. The 302 I like because you can oversize the bead on smaller sizes. Appreciate you watching.

Cory, I tie most of the flies you either introduce or refine to us viewers. I gotta say, this one has a really nice aesthetic to it, which I didn't fully realize until I finished it in my vise. I'm hoping to put it into use later in June on the upper Connecticut head waters in NH. Thanks!

Try nano silk. It does stretch and holds its color better when using UV resin.

Very nice looking fly and great job presenting. Just wondering; do you prefer the thread quill on this fly to a the natural quill used on your quilldigon?
Thanks, Donald. Appreciate it! I prefer the thread body because of the color and the ease of tying it. (You can also tie the Quilldigon this way). Actual peacock quills will work great on this fly, but they are becoming harder and harder to get in the states. Not sure why, but I have noticed it.

Do you think a copper bead offers less flash than other beads? I know you say you like flies without a lot of flash or hot spots. But doesn’t the copper bead also show flash in the water?
Brian, I do think it offers less. At first it does have shine but after you fish it - it will dull down fairly quick. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Have to confess I tied some up based on your description on the Little J video and have done well with them, but this will inspire me to make more and fish them more often. I am totally convinced that nymphs with sparse CDC hackle are dynamite. I have great success with flies like the Blowtorch (both the hot orange and the bright green butt versions) and Soft Hackle Carrot. This is much less flashy than those. One of my new favorites is just a hares ear body, CDC hackle, and a little collar of either dark ice dub like fibers (like your Hands 46 in this video), or for even less flash, just a wrap or two more of hares ear behind the copper bead. Call it a "CDC soft hackle Walts Worm" if you like. It is very similar to the CDC soft hackle hares ear that was one of your first videos ever on RUclips, just not with the pink bead. Like you, I tend to be pretty anal about getting exactly the recommended materials for someone's special pattern, so, of course, the Hends Spectra Dubbing in #46 you use for this fly is not in stock anywhere in the US that I can find. There are other very good "nearly black" with some greenish highlights dubbings out there that I suspect will work just fine. I personally believe it is the contrast of the dark dubbing right behind the brighter bead that makes the difference. Keep 'em coming, Cory. Funny-I tie a soft hackle Walt's as well. Add a little CDC to a pattern can make it come alive.
If you can't find the Hends, any subtle blackish/peacock dubbing will work for sure.

Why always copper?
You can use silver and it works-but for a stealthy/drab appearance, I prefer copper.
@@OldDominionTroutBum That is what I was thinking. I have started using some more matte brown/olive/black beads. Helps with the pressured fish in NJ/PA. Tightlines.
I tied a bunch of these up and used them on a trout stream here in Missouri. The Jack Daniels performed the best. There is a forum for the particular stream I was on so I posted a report of my day and I said " make sure you have a lot of Jack Daniels with you. I mean A LOT!". 😃
Very very interesting tie. I like it!! I have a favorite jig nymph that is simple. It’s a thread body. It’s one that works well on Stillwater’s and streams for pressured trout. It too is a copper bead, always on this one. I use utc 70d In hopper yellow and Coq de Leon tails. I tie it with a very small orange collar and without a collar. Once I apply uv resin, it too darkens the thread. This jig nymph imitates our mayfly crawlers really well in my area. After watching this video, I’m going to hackle my pattern just as you have. I think it will be a benefit to my pattern at times. Thanks for this video, I always seem to learn something from your videos.

I've been watching your tutorials for sometime, and I immediately ordered the thread to try and replicate these flies. They turned out fantastic and look great! They are also a very fun flie to tie. Thank you so much for providing a detailed and easy step by step process. I went out the following morning to try these flies out, and I immediately caught my personal best, a twenty inch rainbow. The Truckee River can be a finicky river to fish, but boy oh boy did this fly shine that morning. I am relatively new to Euro Nymphing, so this was a huge win for me. I will always have few of these in my fly box, thanks again!
