McNulty wins- gets demoted but finally has a stable relationship and stops becoming self destructive Daniels wins- doent stay commissioner but is probably better-paid at the end of the show than the beginning, plus is in a good relationship with Pearlman who is making bank Pearlman wins- making bank as a judge and is with Daniels Carcetti wins- goes from Baltimore city council to governor of Maryland. He had to compromise a lot along the way but he's in a better position to make a difference now than he was before Valchek wins- he's a hack the whole show but keeps his head down at the right times and becomes commissioner Prez wins- objectively speaking had a horrible career as a cop but lands on his feet as a teacher and is making a difference. Plus seems to have a good relationship Slim wins- you can argue he's destined to lose in some way in the future but he's objectively more powerful at the end of the show than the beginning by virtue of buying Marlo's access to the greek supply Carver wins- gets promoted to lieutenant (i think) Herc wins- sells out to Levy but none of his cop friends know, plus gets paid well for it
I worked on all seasons of The Wire at HBO - and didn't pay that much attention- thought it was just another cop procedural & wasn't interested. But I got the whole show on DVD and after hearing so many good things, I sat down & watched it - and was blown away. I've since watched it a number of times and it really is the best show, and best condemnation of American institutions and capitalism ever put to screen. The decay of the rust belt, the bleak unending Game that chews everyone up & destroys families & individuals- it's all there & it's only gotten worse. I see Bubbles doing the nod everywhere I go - the dark, shattered underbelly of the American Dream - which is called that because you have to be dreaming to believe in it.
yep it’s depressing but once you realize your life is a lottery and u have to make the best of it u could get great parents stable house or have a meth head father who molests you it’s brutal
The wire is amazing good. I used to think Breaking bad was the best show, but it doesn't compete with the heartbreaking realism of the wire. Great video, have a sub.
What a depressing, yet very real story. I get angry at myself for having an opportunity to help the homeless or the outcasts, but not doing it because other people tell me I can't. Now, I think another potential threat to people like those in The Wire is artificial workers, AIs. Machines stepping into the job market where real people could be working, now that's messed up.
I disagree. Marlowe won - last one standing with the crown. McNulty won - he got out. Commander Daniels and (Judge) Rhonnie Perlman won. Rawls became the Commandant of the MD State Police. Herk and Carver won. Lester won - he got to hire with his ex-stripper. The list goes on.
Marlo got the ending stringer wanted. But for him, the ending was hell. The main thing he cared about was his reputation. When he found out that his name was completely forgotten on the streets, it killed him inside
Wow bro such a great video. I’ve been a fan since your older Naruto videos , this how ever was something else. You were an inspiration for a RUclips channel I created
Duquan's arc being as uncompromisingly devastating as it is makes his heart to heart with Cutty that much more potently bittersweet. That scene is pretty close to the thesis point of the whole series, it's powerful stuff.
Through this analysis you present, I do also find interest in looking at the city. Throughout the show Baltimore is shown to be its own character of sorts, one that was built up and slowly eroding away by capitalism. Remember reading an essay from a classmate a while ago about a similar concept of the show
I love this show and loved your breakdown. I will say that people always seem like there was some time when United States was some perfect union but forget we started day one with the sins on Slavery and fought a civil war over over our devisions that has yet to be resolved. Also people talk about capitalism and how bad it is as if there is some other system you can point to that is better some place else on earth. When shoot the only places that seem to get along and are doing well on this Earth are in northern Europe mainly because they are small and covered by NATO so they don’t have to spend much money on their military’s and can use that money to enjoy life. I wish humans could just get along on this earth but it will never be and that’s sad.
i read the title and immediately said "no there is a winner....", stopped myself and really thought about it. even being on s4 currently (already having an idea of how its going to end + seeing clips of s5 and s6), its clear that there WILL not be a winner. there is never a real winner in the game
Finally, someone understands. To the rest of the world, it was a good TV show. To the ones in poverty, it's our reality. The reason why it's hard to judge another person
Eh my logic is simple, if you got out, you didn't end up in prison ,you're still breathing, plus you have money, YOU WIN. Not a marlo Fanboy but his outcome is way better than everybody else's who are dead, locked up forever, or still in the game. (which is nothing to be proud of) If I had to choose who shoes I was wearing at the end of the show I would choose his or at the very least poot.
I love all of your essays. I would love for you to do one on exclusively Omar Little. That character, something about him. He’s on my amount Rushmore of Fictional Characters. Kratos, Uncle Iroh, Omar, Indiana Jones 😂. Great job man, so good!
Can't say that I agree with your analysis of the show as a condemnation of capitalism. The problems of Baltimore and its denizens are based more in the universal weaknesses of the human condition than in any particular economic system. Where men go, so do greed, fear and the lust for power.

Prez wins- objectively speaking had a horrible career as a cop but lands on his feet as a teacher and is making a difference. Plus seems to have a good relationship
Slim wins- you can argue he's destined to lose in some way in the future but he's objectively more powerful at the end of the show than the beginning by virtue of buying Marlo's access to the greek supply
Carver wins- gets promoted to lieutenant (i think)
Herc wins- sells out to Levy but none of his cop friends know, plus gets paid well for it
watching for the first time, I'm at the beginning of the 5th season now, what a masterful series
BABE WAKE UP SAGE UPLOADED
This was great 👌🏾 I’m still fascinated by The Wire after all these years
So am I!!! Amazing show! The realism never does!
@@jasminehill6312 💯💯💯
The wire is amazing good. I used to think Breaking bad was the best show, but it doesn't compete with the heartbreaking realism of the wire. Great video, have a sub.
Facts
Yeah the wire is hands down the best show of all time, breaking bad is certainly top ten though.
there u go the wire is a terrifying reflection of real life the wire is a very entertaining drama
No mention of season 5 and how journalism/media is part of the institution as well.
Looking back at how Omar was taken out, I can understand what the writers were trying convey; even Omar can become a statistic.
This video solidifies your channel for me.
Great video to start the new year!
Every person I meet gets forced to watch this show 😂
mazing vid man, only gripe is the lack of Bodie commentary as. I feel his arc was crazy
Dude- love your vids. They always make me feel something
Although he lands on his feet, Bunny Colvin is the most righteous victim of the systems depicted in The Wire.
This is the best social critique I have ever come across.
Great video man
Wow bro such a great video. I’ve been a fan since your older Naruto videos , this how ever was something else. You were an inspiration for a RUclips channel I created
Dude this was Such a Great Breakdown! Greatest Show Ever!
"I am I and my circumstance."
Succumbing to circumstances and becoming corrupt will always reveal the individual's weaknesses and failures.
Amazing, intersectional analysis. Thank you for sharing!
Duquan's arc being as uncompromisingly devastating as it is makes his heart to heart with Cutty that much more potently bittersweet. That scene is pretty close to the thesis point of the whole series, it's powerful stuff.
One thing about the wire…everyone who was looking to fix what was broken was offed (literally or figuratively): mcnulty, bunny colvin, stringer…
This show did not glorify the violent it showed us the truth and thereover was real, raw and heartbreaking.
The greatest TV show of all time
Through this analysis you present, I do also find interest in looking at the city. Throughout the show Baltimore is shown to be its own character of sorts, one that was built up and slowly eroding away by capitalism.
Remember reading an essay from a classmate a while ago about a similar concept of the show
Great essay, keenly observed, well done and thank you.
This was very well put together
No way we copped a wire episode, god is good 🙏
You guys gotta get them likes up 🆙
I love this show and loved your breakdown.
We all do
But speaking for myself .. I definitely struggle to see the POV of those I disagree with and most definitely of ppl I hate
One of the best shows of all time
* the best
There’s a line in the drugstore cowboy that I feel fits this movie so well “we played a game we couldn’t win to the utmost”
i read the title and immediately said "no there is a winner....", stopped myself and really thought about it. even being on s4 currently (already having an idea of how its going to end + seeing clips of s5 and s6), its clear that there WILL not be a winner. there is never a real winner in the game
Won't say who but some of the characters do have good endings.
There is no season 6
@@champagne34567 my b got the numbering wrong. im on s3 catching up to 5
Finally, someone understands. To the rest of the world, it was a good TV show. To the ones in poverty, it's our reality. The reason why it's hard to judge another person
Whenever i introduce someone to the wire i always have to preface it with "remember its just like real life, there will be no happy endings"
The wire is hands down the greatest television series of all time. Nothing else even comes close.
Since Tai Lung is returning to Ku Fu Panda this year I hope we get a video about him before the film releases in March.
I'd like to see Omar White and Ronnie from Power interact.
Wire isnt only the greatest drama of all time, but in fiction. It even Top breaking Bad.
Fantastic video essay! Mad I’m late to this! 👏👏👏🍻
This was summed up beautifully 🥲
I came back to this channel as soon as I found out Tai Lung was returning for Kung Fu Panda 4.
Okay I’ll watch the wire for the 4th time
Damn this video is fantastic, easiest sub of my life
Eh my logic is simple, if you got out, you didn't end up in prison ,you're still breathing, plus you have money, YOU WIN. Not a marlo Fanboy but his outcome is way better than everybody else's who are dead, locked up forever, or still in the game. (which is nothing to be proud of) If I had to choose who shoes I was wearing at the end of the show I would choose his or at the very least poot.
Worst thing the states have ever done take tradesmen workshops out of the school
this reminds me of the end of belly- not the scene but the message behind it
I love all of your essays. I would love for you to do one on exclusively Omar Little. That character, something about him. He’s on my amount Rushmore of Fictional Characters. Kratos, Uncle Iroh, Omar, Indiana Jones 😂.
Great job man, so good!
Yeah but Omar always gets the RUclips analysis and praise I’d rather one on bubbles or dukie
The Greatest TV show.
The wire is one of the greatest shows ever. I definitely got it over breaking bad. I just need to watch the sopranos now to see what’s the hype about.
All excellent shows, you can’t go wrong with
sopranos is amazing also
Get ready for a roller coaster ride
Great RUclips content ... Love this.
Bro. We like the same type of content, i stg. This channel is lit 😂. Keep it up.
Can't say that I agree with your analysis of the show as a condemnation of capitalism. The problems of Baltimore and its denizens are based more in the universal weaknesses of the human condition than in any particular economic system. Where men go, so do greed, fear and the lust for power.
the game is the game no matter who is in it
