I think it's terrible and shouldn't even be required. There's no reason why they couldn't design everything on the car to be programed or calibrated from right there on the dash or the center screen. It should all be built in. I don't like that they have everything hidden behind a pay wall like this. Maybe it's good for money, but it's terrible for the customers IMO.

Its crazy of prices go up but wages stay the same in most fields. I run my own business so charging alittle more isn't a huge deal but still has its problems. My wife works at a hospital and its almost insulting the bump in pay she got. I don't even want to mention school loans. This is the first time in my life I've seen prices skyrocket across the board. I remember years ago gas might raise then next year food goes up alittle but this time it was a slap in the face. I just can't believe that everything and I do mean everything has gone up.

Fortunately you had availability to the on line Tech 2. That Tech 2 is an amazing diagnostic tool. Coupled with the on line programming makes the job complete. Maybe the aftermarket diag tool tool companies didn't want to pay extra for the "trimtest" thinking the tool user wouldn't need it or something else.
GOOD WORK IVAN! You definitely earned your money with this one!

Quite a circle jerk Ivan. Even with numerous high end aftermarket tools, GM makes sure they get their cut.
Pico scope gets you on the path but is unable to finish. Too many diagnostic tools out there that just "won't or can't" complete the job. I feel your pain.
Retired from Gm service 5 yrs ago, had an escm make me chase my tail for quite a while. Intermittently had high internal resistance within the module. Finally it stayed broken long enough for me to test across the comm, terminals with an ohm meter. Exhale and move on.

Every time I program a vehicle, jump thru all the same hoops and finally get it done I can't help but wonder how it's so easy to do a cell phone update and it's free in comparison. It's not data volume, Cell Phones hold a lot of data also... I think it's just because by law they can make it difficult for the aftermarket, so they do.
I guess if the law didn't force them to allow us, we wouldn't be able to at all...Which brings us to needing to have a locksmith license for newer vehicles now. :/

Hi Ivan, thanks for your educational video's, keep them coming!
Are all 4 suspension sensor connectors identical on this Chevy?
If yes, maybe swapping them randomly would recognise the sensor replacement, force the ESCM module to re-learn and automatically clear the C0558-4A code.
But if the sensors are simple 3-wire potentiometers, this would probably not do the trick.
Looks like the internal voltage reference circuit gives off the wrong voltage.
If the circuit board is not covered by epoxy coating, I would start with a visual inspection of the module.
There could be issues caused by vibration like broken tracks or solder joints.
Even water intrusion could be the cause considering the location of the module.
If all seems okay, it can be a faulty semiconductor, leaking/shorted capacitor or other component.
Would love to see the faulty module opened and inspected/diagnosed by an electronics engineer.
    Greetings from Crete in Greece.

Fully support that. I had three Citroen C5 station wagons in succession and they were amazing cars with great suspension, powerful engines and a very comfy ride. The only issues I faced was: frozen diesel in a cold winter night (nobody's fault), two cracked door windows because they froze in place and the window actuator was too powerful (both fixed w/o costs due to warranty) and one weird exhaust partial blockage after inspection that cleared itself with a bang on the freeway (I guess something stuck in the exhaust). The suspension was simply fabulous and absolutely maintenance free. I'm really sad that Citroen discontinued it, it was that good.

the S/W subscriptions were pretty minor compared with YOUR LABOR HOURS. Always intriguing how (as you say) "convoluted" things can get.
BTW.. in my industry we had a standing procedure when connecting or disconnecting any connectors to always inspect. LOOK CAREFULLY AT BOTH MATING HALVES FOR: (-1-) Bent Pins; (-2-) Pushed back pins; and in your field (-3-) Green crusties. This includes new assemblies. After inspection it was critical to NOT FORCE THE CONNECTORS TOGETHER. No, "hammer to fit and paint to match!"
ADD: Did the customer just not have a spare tire that would then offer ADDITIONAL mechanical protection for the replaced module? You suggested they removed it for you but I wonder if it's permanently missing? Just my 2c.

yeah, it's hard to make any conclusions when everything is on a CAN network like that; things can reset each other in weird ways. Or sometimes there is a hierarchy-- Like a Onstar module ties to the radio module, which first hooks into the BCM, which also passes through the gauge cluster before it ever gets to the ECM. So some will have some controls over the module below it; and for no obvious reason: and will be different from one company to the next. This CAN network is a little different in how everything has a passthrough, so they are all equally on the network- so it's a little different. But computers can glitch and still be fine when you reset them-- so you can't always trust it. Like Ivan said, make sure you can repeat the problem over and over, and then you can be certain.

And if you needed it for one customer today, and another tomorrow, both covered by the same "three days", how would you pass the cost along to the customer? $65 each, because they both get the same $65 value? $32.50 each, splitting the cost equally?

I’m little confused about the VCIM AKA ONSTAR. All you did was put the fuse but that also disables GPSand Bluetooth operation? I need Bluetooth and gps so I’m not sure if the customer is aware or cares. He should have let you known the fuse was missing before it caused him money so bad on him. All the issues you have with this truck and more are slowly happening to my 2011 Tahoe LTZ OMG. I really enjoy watching your videos and your diagnostic approach. I left the dealership world in 2009 but these vehicles are impossible to repair without diagrams and scan tools. My truck has a 4 amp draw on the battery that comes on and then falls back to sleep after 1 hour and repeats. I’m leaning towards the BCM but there is no issues with the truck other than that no crazy lights or warnings come on but after 4 days the battery is dead. Gm had a technical bulletin for VCIM software problems but if I remove the Info fuse the drain is still present. UBEC AND body grounds all cleaned or replaced. If I remove the ip fuse box white connector with all the red & white tracer the draw goes away?

I may be done. All this new-fangled voodoo high-tech wizardry is immoral. Take me back to the pre-high-tech days. It wasn't THAT bad, and almost anyone could work on a car. The very idea (in this case) of having to pay over a hundred dollars to gain access to his own vehicle's software! Criminal! And that's after an $800 module! I may be moduled out. I love learning from you but it's really bringing me down.

This is no hi-tech, this is shitty-tech. There should be no scanner/pc/tool needed for this, all the tech needed is in the car. If it was not made by greedy bastards, the car would write "Detected replaced ESCM, recalibrate? [yes][no]", you would press some button on the dash and done. Advanced technology is not a problem, it's how it is used.

@@NoWr2Run Yes, I saw he got one month, I was just curious what the dealers in the USA charge to carry out programming, there seems to be a huge variation in charges. I recently bought a new key for my Toyota from my local dealer and it cost me USD$ 52 for the key, it cost an additional USD$13 to get it programmed (Genuine Toyota at a Toyota main dealer) and I hear people in the US having to pay $400 for the same service!

@@richardgraham65 Yes, huge variations for sure. I just had a key made & programmed for a 2007 Ford by a mobile Locksmith, bill was $95.00 total. 2 different dealers wanted almost $300 & I had too take the car to them. I tipped the Mobile Guy $20.

    • @richardgraham65

@@NoWr2Run You got a good deal there! Nice you appreciated him with a tip. Such a variation between dealers too, some just want to rip you off for as much as possible and do not care about return business. Luckily my local Toyota dealer will not do any work on my truck unless absolutely necessary, so he gets return business now for almost 20 years. I used a dealer in the city and he ripped me off 1st time for brake pads and a couple of ball joints, never ever use them again.
