'14 Tahoe "Service Suspension System" With A Side Of Corrosion
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 28 авг 2023
- In this video I have a look at a customers 2014 Chevy Tahoe that came in with a complaint of a Service Suspension System message being displayed on the dash as well as the ABS and Stability light being on. I gave it a look over several weeks ago and now it is back to be fixed.
-Enjoy!

At least you know there will be a compressor at Wilbert’s next year
No doubt
😂
😂
Bump- Bump -Bah! Brake Clean😊
Yeah! 😆 Unfortunately, Eric missed an opportunity for an easy future salvage by not placing anti-seize on the bolts. 🤣
OK here's my NY corrosion story. Bought a full sized 2000 RAM van in 2002. Lovely vehicle, ran great, put a ton of miles on it, the only repair before it died (other than regular maintenance) was an idler pulley came off on a road trip through PA, the whole thing was just a great reliable vehicle. I thought the rear bench seat seatbelts were getting kind of crusty around 2012, figured for giggles I would stop in a junk yard in Richmond, VA and pick up some seat belts or anything else that I needed for my old gal. In that junk yard was the exact same vehicle on its side. Perfect. Not a spec of rust anywhere on the underbelly. Meanwhile mine is in the parking lot with about 30% weight reduction front to rear. I should have parked them side-by-side and swapped engine, transmission etc as mine had fewer miles and driven the scrapped one home!
Haha i had the same idea today as i needed a steering gear for a 2000 Chevy 3500HD as it sat a while here in Boston and the gear has a pinhole now in it and looked up one at a junkyard and it looked so much better than what i was working on.
"12/12" warranty, 12 miles or 12 minutes, which ever comes first??
another fine Eric O job completed like no one else would do. I love your channel and I've actually learned several things whatching your channel that have come in handy on my own rides. Thanks Eric!
That's generous. I jokingly refer to a 5 x 5 warranty - 5 seconds or 5 feet.
@@georgekaplan6451 Bay door warranty. Once you pass the bay door your warranty is up! 😅
30/30 warranty from up here in MN. 😆
Tail light warranty, as soon as I can't see 'em, it's done.
@@jcadult101 I used to offer the taillight warranty but it can bite you at night! 😄
I have 05 Tahoe 200k
I replaced my air ride system with Arnott shocks and compressor when it first went out. They have a life time warranty on the compressor. They have honored that warranty flawlessly three times. The Shocks have been perfect. Worth the money to keep that system working.
I live in a Salt state, Michigan. Thanks to Eric and fluid film it still in one piece.
Arnott now has a 24 month warranty on units purchased after 7-1-23. Dorman & FCS still have a lifetime warranty on the compressor.
@moparmikesms2774 that's too bad. They are very responsive to warranty requests. mine was purchased long before that date. It takes about 4 yrs for their compressor, too fail.
My Arnott compressor somehow lasted 6+ years when I lived in Chicago. Now living in South Texas salt free life.
11:25 Eric O with the classic ninja 'under the Cheby double kick'. I'm impressed!
Roadhouse!
Perfect spot for that compressor. Well done GM.
Just like their side post batterys 🤣🤣🤣 then you have the die hard Chevy that still can't admit defeat 🤣
gm makes junk
These air sus systems are about as useful as penetrating oil on a rusty fastener. The pump is where it can be jetwashed by crud from the rear wheels and the air intake is at the apex of the inner and outer body panels where there is lots of condensation with no filter or dryer. And they stop working. Who knew.? That frame looks better than some you have shown us.
Good morning you rapscallions. I know if you like Eric's videos, that you're a good person. Have a wonderful day.
Rapscallion, now there's a word I haven't heard in a loooooong time😂
The world is fulla rapscallions, scoundrels & hooligans…up to nothing but tomfoolery & talking poppycock
I love Eric’s videos. You have a wonderful day also😁
@@eddymahon1503 great aren't they? Have been watching them since the very beginning
Felicitations malefactor. Thank you and you too
It's a good thing GM puts on a splash guard to protect insanely expensive modules and the spare tire from corrosion. /s
You just made me think, maybe the splash guard should be on the other side of the unit.Since you drive forward most of the time. Where it's at now ,it acts like a SCOOP. RETAINING all the mud and salt the tires kick up??But I'm sure the ENGINEERS thought of that already, and they wouldn't want you to have to buy this EXPENSIVE unit every 2 years, would they?haha
Seriously, eh! I was thinking the same thing.
Not supporting GM or any manufacturer but if you have an under vehicle spare and don't "exercise" the mount once a year they will seize up. Splash shields can prevent direct impact from road debris, but they can also block wash water from cleaning the built up dirt and salt off of things. Take your choice.
@@BowhuntersFord is 100 times better then any GM

Love watching your channel. Love your honest, maticulous work. Never cutting corners. Learn from you with every video. Thanks Eric!
Great video, as usual
I replaced the air suspension on my 04 Escalade at 100k. I was 'shocked' to see you use the OEM shocks, I know those are high dollar parts. Thanks for taking us along.
What parts did you use? 2000 Suburban with bilsteins and moog rear springs rides rough thinking of going back to autoride.
@chooch502 I used Suncore compressor and 109G-14-R shocks. They are the passive shocks. Plus Timbren bump stops GMRYS4.
We've been making automobiles for 100 years, and we still have not figured out how to stop corrosion.
Good work :-)
If it rusts completely you have to buy another
The story about the penetrating oil is almost an exact quote of what a guy told me in a machine shop 40 years ago
It is good for cooling your drill bits though😂😂😂
Penetrating oil does work, but you need to give it hours, not minutes. Liquid Wrench is what I use.
@@craigthompson4115 oxy/acetylene works well, too
Can't believe it rusted out sitting behind the rear tire...good job GM.
they're a finance company that happens to sell cars.
Love the videos. Wish we had a master mechanic here in south Florida like you. Thank you.

Ray don’t compare to Eric. 2 totally different skill levels especially diagnostics
Our winters here in Germany are just as snowy and salty as they are in New York, yet rust hasnt been a big issue since the 1990s. Before that, yes, an 8 year old car was a rust bucket near the end of its life span. Today I own two cars 23 and 26 years old, Opel and VW, and I intend to keep driving them for many years.
Because, in much of the northern United States, much more than just New York, they seem to believe that more salt is better
I doubt your winters are as cold or snowy as they are in upstate New York, particularly where he is,
Eric has stated that he lives in an area with lots of dirt roads. NY brines the dirt roads for dust control. So the vehicles are getting salted all year, every day. I believe the dirt brine is worse than the salty snow. The dirt brine sticks and stays.
Although I own a 2007 Mercedes E350 and it is rust free and I live about 40 miles from Eric. I think it's the German vehicles.
@@kevinbarry71Part of the problem is that winters in upstate New York aren’t that cold. I’m in Manitoba, and our winters here are actually cold. Yes, we use salt, but not as much, We might not get as much snow as NY…but a good portion of our winter is at a temperature where the road salt is not effective, and the roads and the salt residue remain dry. You can wash a vehicle here in the winter, and have periods measured in weeks before it is considered “dirty” again. I know THAT doesn’t occur on a regular basis out east.
Thanks for the video. Enjoy watching and your teaching. I've been turning wrenches on auto, trucks, GSE equipment many years, and watching your videos I have learned some things that have helped me in troubleshooting or change my troubleshooting ways
Oh my love that comment, penetration oil doesn’t really work, but it gives a man incentive to push harder on the wrench. I love it.
Good job Eric. You take care of your customers with extra care. Helping them out.
Air powered tools, factory replacement parts,And Lunch with Mrs O?You sir,are blessed!
Thanks for keeping the videos coming. I've only been watching for a few months but I've learned some great tips. You'd make a good instructor.
Eric; just have to say, Mrs. O is a blessing to you and your children.
And a very good morning to you, Eric. This is your buddy out here in California. I am extremely shocked that the customer decided to change the pump out. Even though we’re not in the rust belt. I would say in the last 30 years I’ve changed the pumps out, maybe 10 times at best. and the truth be known we were a body shop for a long time and that’s when we changed out those pumps. Damage and accidents. So I guess it’s safe to say most people don’t even bother. Like you said they are very expensive. The vehicle can still drive reasonably well without it. Ron.
Pretty good rear kick getting that wheel free.👊💪🥋
For a moment I thought RUclips redirected me to a Walker Texas Ranger clip.
ANOTHER STELLAR video Mr. O! We got to see the rust, then there was the rotted pump and shocks. Then there was MORE rust ( No torchy torchy though)😢 Should of Fluid Filmed that baby. Enjoyed all your interesting and humorous narrations, topped off with the playfully banter between you and the lovely Mrs. O. Again STELLAR!
I really appreciate the way you diagnose and solve the problem, I've been marathoning your videos about transducers, thanks for sharing so much knowledge. Greetings from the interior of São Paulo, Brazil.
I've been to Sao Paulo! Good to see Brasil show up on this channel. Boa tarde.
I bought all TTX ball joints on my 95 Ford F250 4x4 on the recommendation of you and am VERY HAPPY with them. Happy so much i have a spare outer knuckle for the truck with TTX ball joints top and bottom.
As smooth as Butter Eric O. Great video once again. Cheers from Adelaide Australia.
Perfect video to go with a morning coffee!
Holy cow, August 15th? Wow, we watchin the history channel here. A day late and a dollar short. Still love your videos, keep it up.
Another fabulous job Eric. You do things the correct way 👍
You did an abs sensor on a trailblazer not that long ago, I used your tip on about the valve stem cap fitting perfect in that hole a few days ago. Works like a charm. Keep the tips coming!
Morning! Eric! Thanks for the video. Always nice to see Vanessa.
Make a video of everything you do to it Eric. I could watch your videos all day long. Great job bro.
My small one bay shop has far fewer parts to install but your comments as to quality are good information as to best source. Recently, I have had a Toyota prius as small repair to front bumper. The customer working out as to new bumper vs minor prep to matching paint as scrapes and defect to retainers. (small plastic clip points with cracks and slight defect as bumper to fender attachment). These models required care as to cooling, with several pumps and where antifreeze must be changed to protect the various system. And where the maint must take care as to the *Orange high voltage hazard. AT the plastic, I simply recommend new parts to best repair.
A kooky job came to be present as a 2004 Jeep with a *purge system code (large leak) as intermittent fault. The unit has a long start cycle
also so at task to determine *vac or leak down at fuel pump and where the code setting meets driveabilty.
I truly learn from small comments as for instance, the o ring fit as speed sensor...and while less rust in Wa state, age to repair makes such jobs a sure near future set of problems. Thank you for posting with good humor and first class detail to repair as a work flow.
I enjoy the views and learn from the various faults identified and solved. Regards. M.
Perfect video timing! I’m swapping the air compressor on my Avalanche. Not too bad of a job at all. Thanks for sharing!
Nothing better than recording all kinds of content and getting files that dont work when you go to put it all together.
This air shock video was quite interesting !!!! I had heard of air ride shocks with air bladders that worked great for the first year of a cars life, then all kind of problems, and never used again on vehicles because they were crap !!!! Nice to see Mrs. O. kickin' back in the office. her cooking just a slow simmering till it's just right, then do the meat and it's all ready !!!! That was a helluva compressor setup to operate them shocks. I recall my brother having some kind of after market air ride shocks on the back of his vehicle - think they were Gabriels, but not positive. That's going way back, maybe before your time Eric !!!!! Great work, nice job, happy customers means repeat work and lots of referrals and word of mouth advertising !!!!!!!
I commend the owner for paying for this fix, but the airbag delete - Monroe replace would have been the way to go.
This system actually works really well when everything is functioning. Always holds the vehicle level when loaded yet doesn’t ride stiff when unloaded.
@@allisb1123agreed, especially if he tows often 👍
I can't imagine sending a 2014 vehicle to the scrap yard, that's just insane. I live in MN and drive a 06 and 07 Honda and have no intention or reason to even think about scrapping them!
Same, I saved a 2001 Ford Expedition from the junkyard with only 195k miles on it. It needed work but I’ve replaced all the brakes and coolant, gonna do the windshield since it’s cracked, and gonna repair the AC system next spring.
I found out that the truck has had the coil spring conversion done to it at some point, so I have an air compressor that tries to run but there’s no airbag to be filled. I’m going to try and convert it back to air ride at some point. Mind you, it’s an 01 and I feel like it can still have a lot life left in it as long as I maintain it. I picked it up for $500 so I don’t mind spending a little money to make it good again.
You have the touch for abs sensor removal. Never saw one of those air ride suspension combo units. I'll stay with the front struts and rear shocks. Good work Mr. O, nice to see Mrs. O.
I loved your comment about the spare tire
I live in Oswego, NY and the Salt and snow here gets pretty bad. Especially since the city started using a mix if normal rock salt on the road but also liquid salt brine. You can imagine how rusty your car can get. I've got a 09 dodge grand caravan 3.3l with just over 100k miles. My frame and underside are not half as bad as the vehicles that Eric works on. It just blows my mind how disintegrated they usually are.
Excellent Video to help me with my '11 Avalanche LTZ with suspension light on!
Thank you for the video
CHEVY THUNDER
Keep it coming
Thank you for thinking of your neighbours to the north... Yup - still on fire up here. Love the video (as always)!
Very good Always fast paced and to the point. Good laughs too.
And just cant beat a ride height control system.
Hey Eric, You mentioned the fires up in Canada. I have a weather app that covers the USA and Canada. Yep there’s fires all over Canada. Literally and it’s gotten so big Alaska is involved. Better hope for winds from the south. Otherwise we’ll be in the smoke for sure when it changes direction. Nice job on the shock installation. Another happy customer
Cool little town. Love to see all the 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I love it when an owner replaces the parts rather than trading it in for a new SUV.
And yet another rust fighting repair there Eric ..
Surprisingly this one did not put up much of a fight 👍👍👍
You always take us to the same ol places.
Eric O’…I repaired my Z55 Suspension. It started with the Exhaust Solenoid stuck on, which ran down my Battery while parked at the Airport. So, I replaced the Pump module. Still had issues. So next I replaced the Control Module. Which is that thing above the Spare Tire. Where it rusts out is the Voltage Regulator for the SCM. Only took 2 days to get the Spare down. Got a good used one on e-bay. Had to replace a couple of the Rods to the height sensors. Those rust in two. Since, I have replaced all 4 shocks. I shopped around and found the best deal. Really did not cost that much. Same AC Delco Shocks. After replacing the Front shocks, I found the brakes work better! I tow a trailer and I really like how the suspension levels out the ride.
Another great video Mr. O. Actually the undercarriage didn't look too corroded. I was surprised at how clean the shock mount bolts were.Hope the smoke clears soon.
Great job sir hope y'all had a great day
I like that rubber splash guard? lol the ice and snow must just pile up in that thing, the corrosion told the story. Great fixes, as always sir, you folks have a nice day!
Thanks Eric.
Thanks Mr O, enjoyed the vid as usual. Especially appreciated the discussion on part quality, more of this in depth would be super valuable for each of your repairs. Junk parts are a killer.
You always do a complete job using best practices and materials. Nice work.
I love the "Take some medication and lay in a dark room". 😂
Project Farm has a good video on penetrating oils. They help, but you can't just squirt and go right at it. If you go right at it, they do help lubricate the rusty exposed threads so the whole mess doesn't become blazing hot.
Great job as always Mr. E. Wonder why a person would throw money at something like that?
Eric O
I totally understand why this customer chose to fix this vehicle. With the ridiculousness high prices of vehicles these days along with the interest rates. It makes more sense to fix vehicles than to junk them.
I get the fact that it might look a bit crusty rusty but as long the frame isn't busted or has more holes than swiss cheese. Along if the body isn't a rusted pile that you don't need windows down to get air then the vehicles are worth the fix.
I do want to say I enjoy your videos and think you do a wonderful job at articulating how to do things. You're also one hell of a mechanic and not just a computer poker to diagnosis the issues. You spend the time to track down the fault and repair not just throw parts at it while hoping something works.
Keep on posting, love these videos 😊
Another episode of the 'rust channel'. Man, if you didn't have rusty vehicles, you wouldn't have anything to work on. Thanks for a new video from the best automotive technician on the internet.
I use a panel popper on the speed sensors.. but of course i'm not in the rust belt lol Great video as always!
2:28 Wow, thats crazy how it seriously just disintegrated into dust in our wonderful PRNY!‼️ Salt baby....we love it here! Thats just nuts!🛠️🔧🔩👍
I too have had good luck with Mevotech TTX products.
Ball joints in my Civic fit great and were a breeze to do
The same line for my 2011 RAM not so much, could not press them in with the arm installed, had to use the shop press, took 5 tons to seat, then the CV axles interfere with the grease fittings.
Only way to grease them is into the axle nut hold the axle back and add grease.
Love the channel!!
Keep it up.
From a fellow salt belt tech North of the border.
After watching SMA for at least 3 years, I still am still always amazed hown quickly cars degrade in the rust belt! I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 with 236,000 miles and not a bit of rust anywheres. Hell, the other engine has just began its midlife and with care and/or rebuild who knows how long it will go.
No question penetrating oils don’t always work, but of all of them Kroil seems to offer the greatest chance of success. I learned about it from a guy who restored heavy (class 8) trucks aka semi tractors. Getting stuff to come loose on those things is a tad challenging.
Good job thank you for the great content
Wow! This was an action-packed episode! ..... Loved the pun at 28:20 ... Eric's PG version of Full Metal Jacket ... "miso hungry." 🤣
Good morning Eric.
GM must have a contest to see who can design the goofiest and most Complicated things.
I can totally understand why a guy would be willing to put $1-2 K into parts to keep his ride going. I'm on the same path with a Massachusetts truck that is living on borrowed time as well. The thing is when you look at the price of a new (or nearly new) pickup, the repairs are about 2 months worth of payments. And to be honest, I think most new trucks ain't worth the investment. For most folks, about the time you wrap up the payments you are in the same position you were in 5 or 6 years ago. Plus, this strategy keeps really good shops like yours going strong.
You could do a series on that thing. Load the parts autocannon.
The salt damage in your state is just unbelievable.
Thanks for another great video.

You’d make your meemaw a proud lady to be a published author!
Shocked someone would funnel that kind of coin into a fairly rusty (almost rotted) Tahoe. I guess someone at Wilberts will enjoy some cheap parts in a couple of years lol
SMA Video Drop = Coffee time ladies & gents.
Back in the 80's moog was always good to me , no come backs.
Another quality video from Mr.O. Absolutely correct on the Mevotech garbage Eric. The TTX line is definitely higher quality. Check out XRF steering and suspension components, you will not be sorry.
I had a Lucerne with the "ride levelling" compressor/air shocks. Didn't work for long. Replaced with cheap air shocks that i could pump up with a bicycle pump when needed. To my surprise this setup worked really well and lasted for 200,000 km+. Plus for everyday driving I set them at 20 psi and that pressure would hold for months.
Immediately remembered your red Hondoooo rear shock replacement and the snapped bolt when you said "the Penetrating oil does give a man courage to pull a little harder on the wrench" 😂
You reminded me of how lucky I am, not dealing with all that rustification! I recently replaced the air shocks on my parents' 2011 Buick Luciferne. The dealer diagnosed it (to the tune of $188!), but would not repair it because an OEM ride height sensor was not available. I put AC Delco shocks on (old ones leaking) and mounted a little control panel with a gage, Schrader valve, and toggle switch under the lip of the trunk. Connected it to the original compressor. I never did find the suspension control module on the car. Thankfully, the car didn't have the electrical connector on the shocks. Looked at online parts, and the available variable damping really complicated the task of identifying the correct replacement parts.......
Just this summer I converted a Cadallac Esclade, the same as that Tahoe, to standard suspension. The owner said that she was very satisfied with the ride. I recommend the conversation.
My H2 had basically the same system. Air system worked great, one of the air shocks burst. I removed the entire system replaced with Springs from Amazon. Rides awesome now.
we went through many pumps and one set of shocks on our 07 suburban. Arnott saved our butts. Way cheaper than oem. The original shocks and struts went out around 120k mark. Replaced them once and drove it to 225k. Had to replace countless bypass sensors to get rid of the service message. In the last year the suspension computer rotted out so we put in a switch to toggle the pump relay and fill up the air bags manually. This system is great when it works though. Good ride and always level car when towing. Though, it does allow to over load the tongue weight and payload as the suspension really will hold up a lot of additionally weight. Gotta pay attention!
Love your videos! Thanks
As a tech in a used car lot you've helped me alot. And i want to thank you. But I have to agree with you using oem vs. Murray/motorad Dorman and anchor. My boss and I have been stepping up or resorting in oem because of availability and price. Better in the long run.
We didn't used to call NAPA "Crappa" just because it was a cute twist on the name.
The day I had a customer bring an EGR valve in to replace his bad one (discovered on an emissions inspection) that he'd bought as a walk-in customer CHEAPER than my shop cost at the local NAPA store was the day I was done with NAPA.
Not unless they were the only game in town.
NAPA is the Finnish word for Belly Button. See what you can do with that!
