THANK YOU! Jeez...can't tell you how many "How to layer" videos I've watched on YT and they don't actually tell you HOW to layer. I appreciate others sharing their favorite layering combos but they don't say what the best way to layer is. I know, layering...one on top of the other...but is it more nuanced than that is the question I was trying to find the answer to. Thanks so much for the super detailed video Ashley.
Ashley, this is such an incredible & detailed video on layering fragrances. People always talk about layering fragrances but I have never heard anybody explain it the way you did in this video. It is so helpful. Your content is different than everyone else. You will have over 100K subscribers very soon.
TF Noir Extreme and Tobacco Vanille smells heavenly. I think I read it somewhere that Tom Ford layered them at an event and loved it. Also I like layering LNDL and L'homme from YSL.
Yes, I'm definitely in favor of you dropping a video of your favorite fragrance layers! Ran into you from Sébastien's channel. Keep doing great things!
Great video for me to hear. I use to think layering ruins the original fragrances that you are layering together. However, a while ago I accidentally Layered Gucci Guilty Absolute with Nishane Afrika olifant, and man did that smell phenomenal! Hearing an educated perfumer's perspective helps me realize even more how I've been missing out. Thanks Ashley.
I keep saying it but you keep delivering - another amazing video! Everything is well explained and makes perfect sense. I love your stance on layering. Perfumers don't make fragrances for 1 specific consumer. They make them for brands and that almost always means mass appeal. Because of that it's perfectly fine to love a scent but to still want to tweak it so it would suit your taste, personality and lifestyle better. Also - kudos for improving the audio and video quality!
My thoughts exactly. Creativity is essentially why I started to layer, stack, pair and blend fragrances. Moreover, many "complete" fragrances often feel incomplete to me. And because I wanna smell like what I wanna smell like...then I layer away! 😄 Definitely takes some trial and error to find the right combos though. Incidentally, the demonstration in the vid is what I would class more as a pairing (side-by-side, any surface) rather than a layering (one on top of the other, same surface), stacking (one on top of the other, different surface) or blending (in a vial). From my experience, all 4 can have very different results.
Yes!!! Finally a how to/where to spray instead of suggestions for combinations video. Excited for all the pre shower combination experiences in my future!
Hi Ashley. Yes, of course! Please do post a video on your favorite layering combinations. Would also be nice to see a video on what fragrances both you and a male friend (boyfriend or other) use, and how they act differently on both your skins. :)
I have experimented with layering only once with Bentley for Men Intense and Cremo Spice and Black Vanilla. It turned out well because both were sweet and boozy. But I sprayed them onto each other which made the Bentley become somewhat dominant over the Cremo. Most of my collection is beastly so there's no danger in experimenting. Tomorrow I'm gonna layer my CK Reveal with my Leau Dissey which are both fruity. And then I'll try my Sauvage Parfum with my Mont Blanc Legend Spirit which are both fresh scents. This mix is Parfum vs EDT but I think I can pull it off because Legend Spirit is a strong performer, and as long as I don't spray them onto each other. After this I'll try contrasting scents. Great video👍
Ooo yes, I'd love to see which fragrances you like to layer. I've only just started to play around with this, so I'm not very adventurous. I sprayed Chanel Les Exclusifs La Pausa and then Guerlain Apres L'Ondee onto my clothes the other day and thought it worked quite well.
I have Guerlain Rose Barbare and BR540 extrait. Annoyingly enough, I get a bit of cigarette smell from BR540 for the first couple hours on me but then it settles to a nice sweetness that’s lasts for nearly 24h. So when layered with Rose Barbare…OMG, it’s like the gates to heaven because the Rose Barbare helps me skip over the ciggy phase with its edgy loveliness that lasts 6-8h, and after that, the BRK540 sweetness takes over. I got the idea to layer these two because the nose behind both is Francis Kurkdjian. I really needed a way to cross over from office wear to evening wear for those long days of offsite meetings with colleagues that start 8am and go till 8pm. I also don’t like to refresh perfumes mid-day because it’s so obvious and I’m often the only female in a room of 10-20 men. My re-upped perfume is not what I want to be noticed for…if you know what I mean.
Great, great video! I literally paused the video and tried to layer two scents on my arm, as you suggested. I like the way it smells! Definitely gonna layer fragrances in near future
Thank you for making this video ! Ive always been a rule breaker and have no shame layering . Its like putting an outfit together and so fun to experiment push boundaries. Really been having fun with Mancera Instant crush inner arm and neck original spice bomb closer to wrist . and last two quick sprays of Fredric Male Promise on the back of my neck . None overlap in the spray areas. Catching the vanilla of Instant Crush and the Rose of Promise at different moments of the night is amazing. Spice bomb I just like having along for the ride
After discovering layering almost 10 years ago it's become my specialty and I rarely use just 1 fragrance anymore. Some combinations are virtually unbeatable. 🙂
Thanks for the good suggestions for how I can start to "layer like a player#. Now, let us see your favorite combinations. I really like that Satin Mood-Baccarat idea, and am going to get my hands on a Baccarat sample so that I can try that out. Can already smell it!
I spray one fragrance on the back of one hand and one on the back of the other when testing layers. That way i can smell them separately, or put my hands together and smell both at the same time. I also like to try to pair fragrences with similar sillage and projection, but different longevity. You can make a more dynamic scent that way as one fragrence acts as the "top notes" and wears off first and leaves the "base notes" of the longer lasting fragrence behind.
Definitely would be interested a video with your favorite fragrance layers. I know that on one of the Mr Porter videos Tom Ford talks about layering throughout the day, but would love to get that video of your favorite fragrance layers
Oud for Glory (heavy, hot & sweet) + Issey Miyake D'Issey (cold & bitter) . I almost regret buying Oud for Glory because everybody who smelled it said it was so bad. But this combo, its a compliment bomb..
Definitely interested in a video on your favorite fragrance layering combinations! I just got Miller harris Scherzo and I’m wondering what I can layer with it. I would perhaps like to sweeten it up a little bit.
Bitter Rose/Broken Spear: Top notes are Ember, Thyme and Cubeb or Tailed pepper; middle notes are Rose, Thistle and Nutmeg; base notes are Hot iron, Larch and Amber. Combined with:Unsettled by Fzotic: Notes: bergamot, black tea, clary sage, pineapple, New Caledonian sandalwood, labdanum, vanilla, ocean breezes.
Great to see you with your own channel Ashley and Thank You for this most instructional video on layering, a subject that has until now left me more befogged than before with each informative attempt. All my very best!! 😀
Thanks for making the layering game more pronounced, Ashley! On top of it, my recent layering combo discovery is TDH Eau Tres Fraiche x Prada L'homme--it's a heavenly soapy orange feel! Try it out if you got some! :)
Which are the best pulse points when winter layering with fragrances in separate locations of the body? (Since there is less skin exposed;) Should you apply the stronger scent behind the neck and the less dense fragrance behind the ears/side of neck?! Thank You!
I would say it doesn't matter if you're spraying in different sections, but it's generally more difficult to layer fragrances of different concentrations. I would say spray the weaker fragrance on neck/clothes/arms and then do one spray of the stronger fragrances on your chest and see how that works :)
Two of my fave combos are Maison Margiela's By the Fireplace layered with Jazz Club & Andy Tauer's Rose & Vanilla Flashes layered. Both combinations have a rich opulent feel, so its best for the colder weather :)
Thanks Ashley... Incidentally, I found a laying pair of Issey Miyake's Pour Homme Or Encens and Tiziana Terenzi's Spirito Fiorentino (inspired by B540), which had me sniffing my arm all night, so good! I wonder if B540 and it's inspired fragrances the staple in layed fragrances, just a thought! Your videos are the most educational regarding scent and fragrances!
Great video! On a related topic, would you consider doing a video about how to layer with enhancers like Molecule 01 or This Is Not A Perfume? How do you use those? Do they all work well for all kinds of fragrances (e.g. citruses, floral, etc.) or are there specific ones you should use for each kind of fragrance?
Any suggestions to layer with Dolce & Gabanna Light Blue Forever Pour Homme? It’s too heavy on the grapefruit so want to find something that layers well with it otherwise I think I’ll sell/swap it
Awesome video! And makes more sense than others who say to layer similar notes (but then what is the point of that? lol) Look forward to your layering combo video. Do you (or anyone else) have any suggestions for something to layer with Chanel No. 19 (the original/EDT) to make it a tiny bit sweeter and maybe more updated/current (for the few times I occasionally do want to soften No. 19's hard-core character)? Thank you! I've been binge-watching your videos since subscribing recently. XO, Julie
Question:; if you normally wear 2 sprays of a particular EDT, and there is another EDT that you would wear only 2 sprays would you wear two sprays of each if you are layering them together? Or do you wear one spray of each to add up to a total of two sprays so that it won't be overpowering to people around you. Help me understand this
Topic suggestion: Can you take one or more popular fragrances and tell us what are the ingredients that come out the most? (e.g.: Aventus, Bleu de Chanel)
I can see perfumers layering all things all the time, if only as an experiment. See how things work together. Never know where you can find your next bout of divine inspiration.
Many years back I used Tabac aftershave & Gravity on my hair Received many compliments with that I tried a combination of Sauvage Edt & Neroli Portofino before an events That did not work at all 😅😅😅
Can you suggest something to layer with Sauvage EDT to make it less obnoxious? I received a bottle as a gift but don't really like it. It's too loud and headache-inducing.
I like Dog's Life's recommendation as well as another recommendation I saw in the comments here to layer Sauvage EdT with Orange Sanguine by Atelier Colognes. I think that or another super citrusy fragrance would work. I find this fragrance complex so maybe start with citrus soliflores or simple citrus colognes

You’re so knowledgeable, intelligent, and well spoken. As a side note, your eyes are incredible!
I like the interplay of layering a masculine with a feminine. It can create a gorgeous tension!
