Thanks for your message - we're thrilled you're following our journey.
These stone, metal and woodworkers are artisans extraordinaire! The vision and skill and pride will be showcased for centuries forward. Thank you for the in depth look. How many of us think of the detailed work that precedes the resulting architecture we admire. WOW, just wow!
You're absolutely right. It's such a pleasure to watch the transformation of such a magnificent structure. The talent of the artisans is inspiring. Here in the USA, we would have just brought in the bulldozers and reduced it rubble. It's the American way.
Wonderful work. Didnt think you could do this so beautifully. I think of this home in its hay day, what a special place it would've been for its owners to see. Now we across the world can have a feeling of awah as it is completed. Well done!
Perfection on a huge huge scale! 😮 A total life changing experience with all involved with this incredible building. It is a special love affair if one can call it that. ❤
It is heartwarming that you consistently showcase the amazing workers and that you highlight their incredible skill. I love that you share your home with their families as well. With all the chaos and uncertainty in the world today, I want to say thankyou for sharing something positive and breathtaking with the rest of us. My hope is someday to be able to visit this beautiful piece of history.

Thank you for your message. We're thrilled that our journey is bringing you joy. We would love to welcome you to Chateau de Purnon during one of our Open Days.
Such a magnificent labor of love combined with determination and perseverance. When the Chateau de Purnon is finished, you will live in one of the most beautiful homes on the planet.
I love a building with concave curved eaves. I wish modern architects would reintroduce them!

Thanks for your message. Ours had been removed to create a platform for the 19th century zinc guttering. it is immensely satisfying to see them returned!
Just want to compliment you on the amazing work of bringing these videos every week. You're becoming proper documentary makers yourself, the video work, the narrating, the music, I just love watching the work being done to the chateau. Your work of documenting this is in line with the quality of the artisans working their magic on all the parts of the project, absolutely love it! Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for your message. We appreciate your acknowledgement of the considerable work that goes into producing these videos. Thank you! We're thrilled you're following our adventure.
Your humility as well as the focus, care and attention with which you film the details of the chateau's architecture and the work of the artisans is what makes your videos stand out to me from all the others. What a beautiful work of passion of the artisans, architects and you, it is truely amazing
Only now I realise what a big shot Frédéric Didier is. I always loved his visits and the care he gave to details, but now I understand that he is the leading architect at Versailles, Cluny and other buildings that are on every architecture top list. Great that you are in that league :-) Lovely video full of passion. Passion for stone and history and craftmanship yes, but that is a genuine form of passion. I hope with you that you indeed will celebrate that very special day of love and passion in a castle without scaffolding, the old and new stone reflecting a warm summer sun and giving extra joy to the occasion.

Thanks for your message. Yes, we were fortunate indeed when we secured the services of Monsieur Frédéric Didier. His involvement has transformed our project.
I envy you your position to stand at the foreground of restoring this magnificent edifice. We are so quick to destroy our beautiful past instead of embracing what has been left to our care. Thank you for realizing this with Purnon and allowing us to join you on this incredible journey.....
You are so lucky to have such an amazing group of artisans working to restore this masterpiece! And it is also so fortunate for these workers to learn new skills and advance their trade working on such an elaborate build. They can take their skills to bring back many other projects.💕🥂🇨🇦
Salut a touts les artisans qui travaille a le Chateau, votre profession faire le coeur du chateau de vivre encore. Excuse le francais terrible c'est depuis presque 40 ans que je parler francais regularmente. Thank you once again for sharing the tremendous team effort restoring the Chateau.
You two are such a beautiful couple. A blessing to all of us. May we bless you right back and this wonderful restoration of history. Much love to you both! ❤❤
You should have a plaque or two made, perhaps installed under the lions where you sit at the end of the videos, that lists the names of the stone masons, carpenters and slaters.

Thanks for your message and your suggestion. As we've shown in several videos we invite the artisans to inscribe their names and the dates they worked here on different parts of the building relevant to their trade. This has been the tradition at Purnon (and indeed at other chateaux) for centuries. The restoration of Chateau de Purnon (both the exterior and interior) will call on the skills of a vast range of artisans for years to come. It would seem a shame to place a plaque which only acknowledged those connected with one phase of the works.
I have never seen an artist cutting and sculpting stone - I’m in awe. What a gift. It gives me a new perspective on all stonework throughout our history 💙

My mind is blown by the skills and dedication of your master artisans. That said, it is also blown by how much all this work must be costing both inside and outside… so I am left thinking where does it all come from?

Thanks for your message - we're thrilled you're following our journey. To answer your question - we've committed our life savings, we have been generously supported by the French government and we fundraise (RUclips, Patreon, our book sales, donations, we even sell the old slates off the roof as handcrafted drinks coasters). We'll restore as much of the estate as we possibly can.
Thank you for sharing but that still leaves you having to fund (I am tempted to say) millions from your own pocket. If that is is indeed the case, I thank you for dedicating your wealth to such a worthy cause
You had me at copper gutters ( and long before that). It’s fabulous seeing the “jewelry” going back on this beauty. Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials. You’ve both put your hearts and souls into this restoration.. and soon they will be joined in matrimony. How perfect!

It’s so refreshing ,yes to see you both truly appreciate your artisans working on all aspects of the Château’s restoration! So very wonderful artisans! My favorite parts are the shaping of the roof and the stone work. I’m reading your book, “Chateau Reawakening” and enjoying it very much!
The work of the artisans is just amazing. You can tell the pride and passion every step of the way. Watching the joy, excitement and pride that you guys have when telling us the story does come across very well. In turn we are excited for you as well. Love hearing about all the history of Chateau too. I am hear for all of it! ❤
Thank the craftsman willing to be filmed and share their outstanding craftsmanship so people can see that trade work is a rewarding way to earn a living and instant gratification seeing the work completed and how the recipient appreciates the hard work unfortunately losing that with younger people today ! Being in a younger country Canada trades are disappearing ! Even just being a plumber or electrician is rewarding take pride in your work is a good feeling wish young people understood that ! They are losing out its sad being behind a computer is not always the answer !
Did you say wedding? OMG, congratulations! I love your home, I love that you both care so much about your beautiful home. Be happy both of you, together forevermore.

Those intricate small tasks are a delight to watch and nicely filmed and edited as well. It's very kind that your team of artisans allows their work to be filmed and how wonderful it is they and their families watch it back and also visit the site. The copper guttering is stunning. The way the artisan bends and shapes the lead is masterful. I guess they must feel quite humble retracing the work of the other artisans who built Purnon. bw m&r

Artisans!! Make sure you are getting routine massages, relaxation baths, saunas, stretching and such …… Im sure you know this 😊 Fabulous work and skill.
Along with all the compliments from you and other watching I think it would be wonderful if you have an annual fancy dinner party for all the artisans who helped with restorations. Another beautiful reason to keep the chateau alive. What are some events you are thinking of offering in the future at your chateau once it's finished or space available? Other chateau owners have offered film settings, photography, tours, bed and breakfasts, concert events, garden party brocant? So many fun events to come up with.
Always amazed to look at this fantastic roof restoration and congratulations to all these craftsmen..... Be proud of this magnificent castle and its enriching history..!!! Greetings from Burgundy.👍👍🙏

Another great video! The work on the roof and its various components is absolutely intriguing and the fact that you are creating an improved gutter system vs that of the 19th century it’s absolutely fantastic. A question in respect to the water that comes off the roof does it simply get dispersed in the ground or are you collecting it for a specific purpose?
4 часа назад+1
Thanks for your message. When the dry moat restoration is completed, the down pipes will be reconnected to the system of evacuation pipes that take the water to several large cisterns located in front of the huge communs buildings that are arranged in front of the chateau. This water can be used for watering gardens and lawns etc.
love watching the amazing progress. As a roofer in Australia I am especially interested in the roof work. Im curious to know how the gutters will ever be cleaned? ive not seen a building yet that doesnt over time fill up with debris or just silt up, not too mention birds nesting in them ect which had me asking what happens when they inevitably need cleaning, or a downpipe or a down pipe spreader is blocked? is there a plan?
It would be interesting and educational to hear more about what is behind the decision to replace the roof gutters with the copper system rather than return to the original system of ground gutters directing water to the cisterns….since there is so much emphasis on retaining the original design and authenticity of the buildings. Also, is it just how the copper is being affixed to the building that will prevent the damage caused by the earlier gutter system…and how will the water be directed as it comes off such an enormous roof? There is so much behind making a system like this work properly, fascinating topic.
Silly question time for me… I’m trying to count layers and understand the roof structure as I’m seeing it in this video. I guess there’s plenty of airflow behind what seems surprisingly thick wood just below the … well it won’t be only slates right?… yet, is that on top of the grid that’s on top of the “original” layer of wood planks that held the 100 yr old slates you removed? So then the insulation layer goes over the new oak, but under the “waterproof” layer that will finally be… underneath the ultimate layer of new slates? 😮 Wow?! But I guess the reality is that those roof sides are actually exterior walls, from the point of view of the human occupants of those attic floors and dormers… So they need a ton of insulation, by today’s standards. 🤯 My learning curve (watching your project) is so steep! I love it! 🥰🍿👀

Thank you for your message - we really appreciate your support and interest. Let us try and answer your question regarding the layers on the slate roof like this. There are really two areas 'beneath the slate' - 1) the vast attic and then 2) the second floor (which sits at the level of the stone dormers but in architectural terms is also under the slate). When the chateau was constructed they built a huge oak frame to support the roof. At the second floor level, stone and masonry created walls around this oak frame, whereas in the attic there was no masonry as such because air was meant to circulate and it was never intended for human habitation. They then attached wooden battens to the oak frame and then nailed the slates to the battens with iron nails and the roof was finished. With our restoration, after restoring the oak frame where water damage had occurred, a massive wooden frame is attached to this oak structure. This creates a uniformly level surface. Across the entire roof a thin waterproof membrane is attached and, at the level of the second floor insulation is also attached. Then the wooden sheathing is screwed into the frame. This is a much more secure, consistent, and thicker surface than the old battens. The roofers then attach the slate tiles to the sheathing using two copper nails. The slates themselves are around double the thickness of the original slates, many of which are now around 250 years old. Does that answer your question?
Excellent explanation! Thank you! I was questioning my perception, but yes you are indeed replacing “battens” with a solid layer of wood AND modern waterproofing AND a new layer of attachment points for the new slates. 👀🥰 My understanding of old houses is that they were vastly over-engineered (because why not?)… But I’m curious how your architects are thinking about that additional weight in the building overall? I’m not questioning the results. I’m strictly curious. The foundations at Chambord turned out to be… two-deep, and they still dug all the way to bedrock, I guess? I’m just always amazed at how very much the engineers do analyze, whereas I am tempted to take it all for granted… Way cool!
The workers' families will probably pass down the story of their ancestor's role in restoring Purnon as a proud part of their family history. I know I would.

We hope so! And the evidence of their contribution will be here for all to admire.
So, it looks like the copper guttering is nailed into wood and not the stonework; do you have to worry about the copper verdegris staining the stone? It's lovely to see the Artisans continuing the old crafts; they should be proud. ❤
Please let your artisans know how impressed we are with their skill & knowledge. Here in Canada we have very few buildings of this size that date back to the late 1700’s. It’s a gift to have the opportunity to follow along & learn how they restore the facades & roofs.
Thank you for finally showing some of the exterior renovation action shots, including the stone grafting. Still unclear how the new stone portions are grafted to the remains stone pieces….using mechanical, epoxy, or cementous connectors. Also, you finally answered the question using video as to whether the existing sheathing would be removed. No… it stays in place where the oak structural ribs are in good shape and is then encapsulated with an overlying lattice framework which is then covered with new 2x sheathing, waterproof membrane and slate roofing. Two questions: 1) still unclear of the location of the membrane layer….directly beneath the slates? 2) Also, there was mention of adding insulation. No video of the insulation layer, what type of material or its location? All these details are of great interest to the building trades that watch your videos. Thank again for unveiling some of these secrets in this video. We want more!!🥰
4 часа назад+1
Hi Robert, thanks for your message and the various questions. The slates are nailed directly onto the sheathing. The insulation and waterproof membrane sits between the sheathing and the oak frame (the position of the membrane is sometimes under and sometimes above the lattice frame). You can see the insulation in several of the shots. It is installed under the sheathing at the level of the second floor (ie the level accessed by the stone dormers). Regarding the stone grafts, you'll have to await a future video to get a more detailed explanation of the adhesive for connecting those. We're thrilled you're following our adventure.
Hi guys, looks like it's coming together. I love Monsieur Didier, a real French name. Now, have you made a wedding list yet? You will want some new things for your home or we could get you a brick 😂😂 love to all ❤❤
I assume if you miss the nail, or drive it in too hard, the slate tile will break, right? They make it look so simple and easy, but I feel like I'd crack half those tiles.
What a fabulous group of artisans. It is lovely to see true craftsmen who take enormous pride in their work.

Amazing craftsmanship, glad somewhere in the world it is still taught and practiced. We can't afford to lose the knowledge and processes that can't be done with machines.
Thanks for your message. We're thrilled you enjoyed seeing the skills of our incredible artisans.
I guess they must feel quite humble retracing the work of the other artisans who built Purnon. bw m&r
Thanks for your message guys. We're thrilled we get to share each small step in the journey of saving this magical place.
It warms my old heart to see this preserved ❤
Thanks for your message - we're thrilled you enjoyed this episode.
Will you be filming the wedding? Soooo beautiful, gives craftsmen a chance to do meaningful work. The pride they must feel.
This is a place I would add to my bucket list.
We would love to welcome you to Chateau de Purnon during one of our Open Days.
Amazing job love you guys are saving this beautiful building and sharing the history of it
Love it ❤
Thanks for your message - we're thrilled you're following!
Were any of these artisans also involved in the restoration of Notre Dame?
Yes, some of our carpenters worked on the restoration of Notre Dame after the fire.
You truly have wonderful craftsmen working on your project.
Thank you - we agree!
True artist's
Exactly.
Thank you for your message. We're thrilled you're following our adventure from Burgundy.
So surprised to hear you two are getting married! I assumed you already were married. Good for you.
Lindo.
Obrigado!
Where did these artists come from? How do they know how to exactly do these jobs? They are all amazing!
Holy cow! So interesting and truly amazing!
Excellent explanation! Thank you! I was questioning my perception, but yes you are indeed replacing “battens” with a solid layer of wood AND modern waterproofing AND a new layer of attachment points for the new slates. 👀🥰
My understanding of old houses is that they were vastly over-engineered (because why not?)… But I’m curious how your architects are thinking about that additional weight in the building overall? I’m not questioning the results. I’m strictly curious. The foundations at Chambord turned out to be… two-deep, and they still dug all the way to bedrock, I guess? I’m just always amazed at how very much the engineers do analyze, whereas I am tempted to take it all for granted… Way cool!
The workers' families will probably pass down the story of their ancestor's role in restoring Purnon as a proud part of their family history. I know I would.
We hope so! And the evidence of their contribution will be here for all to admire.
Love everything but not complete until your dog shows up!!!
Wondering if there is some sort of waterproofing that can be done on the most vulnerable stone to help avoid deterioration
So, it looks like the copper guttering is nailed into wood and not the stonework; do you have to worry about the copper verdegris staining the stone? It's lovely to see the Artisans continuing the old crafts; they should be proud. ❤
💪❤❤
We want more!!🥰
Hi Robert, thanks for your message and the various questions.
You will want some new things for your home or we could get you a brick 😂😂 love to all ❤❤
In Hong Kong they use Bamboo for scaffolding.
You left us hanging again, why is it bricked up. Haha
Interesting. If you have engineering drawings for a mansard roof, can I borrow individual assemblies and technical solutions free of charge?
What’s the piano play you can hear at the start of the video? Btw great video!
I assume if you miss the nail, or drive it in too hard, the slate tile will break, right? They make it look so simple and easy, but I feel like I'd crack half those tiles.
How far are the artisans traveling to work on this project?
Several are only a village or two away. Most have a 40 minute or so commute each day.
I'm waiting for the day when the outro in filmed and there will be no scaffolding.
We await the same moment also!
We forget how tall the Chateau is.
