    By the way, the UK has had the second highest standard of Dental care in the world for years, behind either Germany of Denmark. Google it. The last time I looked, the U.S. was in ninth place. It was obviously Austin Powers that started the whole thing about bad British teeth, but if you watch the movie, you'll see that he never actually says Brits all have bad teeth. What he says is that, back in the 1960s, people with bad teeth were allowed in movies and on TV in Britain.

    • @Electrowave
      @Electrowave Месяц назад

      I think the worst teeth I have ever seen were from somewhere in southern USA, and their teeth were damaged by too much Mountain Dew. That was a TV program about sorting out their teeth so I guess the looked for the worst they could find, I and I don't expect all in that area to have the same teeth (or lack of teeth!). In recent years in UK, at least here where I live, the dentists have been dropping NHS work. I needed emergency dental surgery but waited for months just to be given an x-ray and antibiotics which did nothing for the pain. I was told I needed surgery but the health board couldn't give me any idea when it could be done. I'd had the pain on and off since 2023 but it became unbearable a few months ago, even with painkillers every two hours. I eventually took out a loan and had it done privately. So, I agree we have good dentists but these days only for those that can afford them. It'll take me some time for me to pay it off. That's fine as long as nothing else major goes wrong for a while. My problem was preventable but I stopped seeing my dentist when they changed to private only. At that time the NHS didn't have a list I could join so it was a case of contact dentists and trying to get on their lists. Now the health board has a list again so I am on that. I had a tooth growing through from the top which is longer than all the others and it kept hitting the tooth on the bottom. A bit chipped off a few years ago but it didn't give me any pain at that time. Later it broke the lower tooth into three pieces. Anyway, I've waffled on enough for now 🙂

    • @davidholden2658
      @davidholden2658 Месяц назад +6

      The bad teeth stereotype existed long before Austin Powers. That film was referencing an existing stereotype. The difference between the British and Americans was that in Britain we focussed on dental health and didn't worry so much about aesthetics whereas Americans seem to be obsessed with having perfectly straight, bright white teeth which aren't necessarily healthy.

    You nailed the reserved vs unfriendly thing. Our culture has always had a strong sense of individual privacy (although that has changed in recent years). As a result, we don't tend to ask intrusive questions, or make a show of ourselves.
    The teeth thing seems to come from how Brits are less concerned with having ridiculously white or absolutely straight and perfect teeth. A small gap or one being slightly crooked is not a concern. If however one has a mouth which looks like a crooked country gate, then yes we'll get braces or whatever is needed to fix the problem. Slight yellowing with age is normal and not something most people care about, but serious yellowing will be dealt with.

    Britains weather is due in most part to it's position off the west coast of the continent. Warm water from the Gulf of Mexico streams across 3000 miles of Atlantic Ocean before hitting landfall in the form of the British Isles. As the warm moist air rises over the coast it can condense to form rain very easily unless it is hot enough to remain as water vapour. These systems include the remnants of tropical hurricanes that have expended their energy on the southern states but can pick up loads of moisture as it approaches the UK. Once the eye of a weather system has passed us it circulates over France, Germany and Scandinavia, drawing down colder air from the Arctic. Their effect on the UK depends on how far north or south the Jet Stream is lying.
    This is why we say you can experience 4 seasons in one day in Britain, a warm day can quickly become wet, cold, windy depending on what is coming in from the sea, but it keeps everything green, hence Ireland being the "Emerald Isle", we sing about Englands "Green and pleasant land", and we can grow palm trees in Scotland.

    My only awareness of American tourists in the UK came about 40 years ago, in a cafe/restaurant in Bournemouth when all I could hear was an American yelling out “Coffee, coffee” in order to get the server’s attention. Might have been normal in the USA but was mightily out of place in sleepy Bournemouth. My interaction with Americans, on my one visit to the States, is extremely positive. The service staff loved my Hampshire accent and two Miami Beach cops posed for photos with us, with one giving my youngest son his nightstick to pose with, having first pretended to offer him his gun. And the biggest coincidence was being waited on by a young woman named Charlene who had friends who lived in the same area of Southampton where I was raised as a child. ❤

It failed to get out of the factory grounds. On that day Sydney was have alight shower of rain, an inch in an hour (well light by Sydney's standards). The investigation revealed a lack of water proofing. The Australians were amazed because they thought it rained all the time in the UK. Having lived outside the UK for 35yrs, the most mentioned British stereotype is the drunkeness. Drinking on the street is illegal in most of North America, that shocks many, tourists to London also take about the crowds standing in the streets outside pubs after work drinking heavily and loudly. And business people - especially in more "liberal" professions are shocked by being invited to meeting in the pub. - I've even heard comedians in conversation who were shocked to be invited to a pub to see an agent or tv exec.
    I actually had sister who worked in the UK offices of an American company about 45 years ago, whose contract stipulated that she was not allowed to drink at lunchtime, she had to sign an agreement, it was a fireable offence.

      It's called 'freedom' something the US boasts about but doesn't deliver. Can't walk in the street (don't they know people came first not cars?), can't drink in public, can't walk freely in residential areas without risk of being shot, etc. Here, if people abuse their freedoms they get arrested and face legal consequences (if caught). The American answer seems to be 'forget the freedom thing' and a flat - 'no-one can do that.'

    1) It´s not British people who are quiet; people are quiet in lots of countries. The outlier is Americans. Why do they always talk so loud? I was in a restaurant once in Greece. At the far side of the restaurant from me was a table at which were sitting a Greek , a Japanese and an American. I could hear nothing the first two said, but EVERY WORD the American said: what she was studying, where her parents worked, her not-particularly-scintillating opinions of the places in Europe she had visited. This story was some years ago, and anecdotal at the time, but I´ve had similar experiences many times over regarding Americans. Amanda, you are soft-spoken proof that not all Americans fit this stereotype; but I´m at a loss to understand why so many do. 2) I have to disagree about the asking what you "do" (i.e. what your job is). Although Americans do it a lot, it is still quite common in Britian, too. Here in Spain, it´s very rare. We have some friends we´ve known four years who have never asked my wife about her work. 3) The thing about the food: food standards in the USA are much lower than the UK (and the EU) and even have things like a minimum admissable amount of rat hair in food, so Americans ought to look at home first, before critiscising anyone else. 4) If Brits have "bad teeth", then so must Americans, since most Americans still descend from the islands of Britain and Ireland (and, don´t forget, Ireland was part of the UK until 1921). 5) I don´t think many Brits actively hate Americans. But - since we´re dealing with lazy stereotypes - I was definitely brought up to believe the obviously nonsensical notion that Americans are all a bit stupid.

    Generally speaking I quite like the colonials. Of course there are odd ones, but that holds true no matter where you are. They talk funny and they tend to throw tea in to seawater - I don't know why; they just do. But on balance they are a decent if strange and somewhat quirky bunch.
    Oh! And I can attest that the Queen thing is absolutely true! Many, many years ago I was accosted by a whole bunch of visiting American tourists on an excursion to the "historic market town" in which I live and sure enough they asked if I knew her. "Oh, you mean Liz," I replied, "Yerrrse, course I know her - most of the Brits round here do."
    I got out of there while their chins were still on the floor, gawd luv 'em.
    But hey, what point is there in stereotyping if we're not doing to reinforce them? 😄

    The rainfall thing depends on where you live in the USA or UK, there are a lot of US states that have far more rain than the UK and there are parts of the UK that are far wetter than others.
    We probably have more days where it rains but often its just a shower, not the sort of deluge they suffer in places like Hawaii where they probably get as much rain in a day as we do in a year where I live in Dorset.

This was a wonderful show which featured very high class drama about England, as well as Whales and Scotland. Those I have met have been charming, well educated, thoughtful, generous, and we share many values, such as general honesty, the rule of law and a moral sense of what's right and wrong. There is much, much more that unites us, than divides us. I don't think there's a single country we've done more for and received more from in return and long may that continue.

    The bad teeth thing is an impression started from the first world war films of soldiers in France...... every smile looked like an old piano ( one white one, one black one and one missing) the generation before the war was the first to be able to afford sugar.sugar was very highly taxed and only the wealthy could afford it. But after a few deaths as a result of being poisoned by products used to adulterate the sugar ( like a dealer that " cuts" his product to bulk up the amount) and the increase of sugar available the government slashed the tax. The popularity of the once expensive ingredient didn't come with a health warning about the effect on tooth decay..
    During Victorian times it was not unusual for a newly married woman to have all her teeth out to avoid the cost of the dentist....
    If you think that is crazy take a look at the cure for " women's hysteria" the very popular " womb massage" ...a medical technique that involved the doctor incerting his fingers into the woman and easing the stress by slowly stroking the inside area

But the hospitality I was given was amazing. American forwardness compared to British, I quickly adapted to. Got into a few heated discussions but it was regarding US beer. Utter yuck! I assume it’s because both accents seem completely native to me? - at most times I can place an accent from the UK within a couple of miles, and US accents usually to a state or sometimes city.
      It seems to be mostly with the radio that I will have instances of complete accent blindness - with the internet I listen to a few UK shows, along with shows from Canada and US

In the northern states the accents are clipped and in your face, in the southern states they are a lazy drawl making multiple vowel sounds onto a long drawn out incomprehensible weirdness. I remember a southern accent lady referring to someone’s name a feeoal. At first I thought she was saying Theo. But nope I was wrong. In the end I found out the name was Phil, which I would say like Fill. My favourite U.S. accent is New York. It’s in your face but it makes sense.
