- I’m back with another reaction video, I’ve had so many great recommendations from you all. I’ve really enjoyed Peter kay and Micky Flannagan, they’re absolutely hilarious, so I’m really looking forward to watching Al Murray vs Americans.
Before I get started, a lot of you mentioned that I need to react to Lee Evans.. are there any particular videos you guys recommend as I have no idea where to start… let me know in the comments

Al Murray has a degree from Cambridge in History... his actual breadth of knowledge is staggering. The Pub Landlord character allowed him to make his knowledge and quick wit accessible to those that weren't as knowledgeable but we carried along.
He is a comedy legend and was lucky to see him live in a small comedy club as a mystery performer as he tried out new material... my wife and I were in bits and for some reason she put her hand up for being from an EU country.
After the show he came up to her and made sure he hadn't upset her too much... she is very proud of the selfie

The Oxford Revue is a famous group of gifted students who develop talents in entertainment whilst studying. Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle (all Monty Python), Olivia Colman (The Crown), David Frost, Germaine Greer, Stephen Fry, Graeme Garden, Hugh Lawrie (House), Daniel Massey, and these are only the ones I can remember. They all came from this group. Where Al is different, like Hugh Lawrie and Stephen Fry et al, he can do comedy and uses his classic history degree too. He makes serious history programmes, producing and writing. So he is teaching history and keeping our interest in the past alive. You’re obviously woke.......your comment is crass and unnecessary.

@@christinemillership1189 Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie actually went to Cambridge and not Oxford and both would be horrified if people thought they went to Oxford. Hugh Laurie actually rowed in the boat race for Cambridge. In fact everybody you mentioned went to Cambridge and were members of Footlights and not the Oxford Revue.
On stage, Al Murray is a walking encyclopedia of info on almost any subject. A very sharp and acerbic mind.
Well, yeah. Consider that he asks the audience member where they've come from and then does a whole routine on that.
Like, if they'd said "Australia" instead, then he's probably got a whole other routine doing the same for Australia. And another one for France. And another one for Germany. Et cetera.
Now, that's very clever indeed. Not just to have a ton of different routines all ready to go, but to pull out whichever one fits the audience member, so that it all seems genuinely off-the-cuff and makes his "pub landlord" character seem more believable.
And he's actually got a degree from Oxford, and is extremely knowledgeable about world history. He's just playing the slightly racist opinionated drunken oaf for the comedy.

@@kev27kev27 I can comprehend what's going on I just would have assumed they were plants. I know a bit about showbiz and there are little things like how whatever person goes quiet and lets him do the resulting piece.
He's certainly knowledgeable though, and presents the knowledge in a laughable way that seems not to offend, appreciating nuances like British arrogance and the pillage and plunder of old times.
Al is a really funny, warm guy and I like the way this lady let the comedy roll and the tears roll as a result. 😊 Good stuff!
@@DirtyJamesUK you can tell by their reaction they're not plants. He's just one of those people with a good memory and a sharp mind. In my opinion, although it looks simple and formulaic, he is a level above most comedians.
He's an exceptionally talented comedian...its all a character...he's also a musician and has a deep knowledge of history

His dad always took him on holiday growing up to famous battlegrounds which is probably where it started

Seen him a couple times live. I love him. His knowledge of history is incredible. He can pull a joke from thin air based on a year or country given. He's also styled as the Pub Landlord comedian, so always a pint :) I love his shows.
He's extremely knowledgable about WW2 battle history.
Seen him live, hes one of the best, The stereotype pub landlord is so British and he plays it perfectly, hes a very very well educated man and is completely different in his personal life.
Like rowen atkinson or mr Bean hes an oxford graduate ☺

He is in character of a uk pub landlord, his character is reflective of the sorts of discussions that happen between regulars an landlords in uk pubs. E.g. you may hear lengthy and heated debates over who the best electricity and gas providers are. This normally depends on how much the alcohol has been consumed. Al obviously uses this as a platform for comedy, and he does it very well.
Al Murray once said about his `Pub Landlord` character "He's a Know-all, who actually knows nothing!" Al is very different in person and has once stood for Parliament.
Isn't that a commentary on all old-school pub landlords though. He's not an individual character, he's a stereotype. Back in the days when England had real pubs, instead of massive budget gastro-chains, most of them would have been run by a guy like this. Like a London cab-driver, knows everything, opinion on anything...

Al Murray is simply playing a role of 'The Pub Landlord', who in theory has to be friendly with everyone, in order to prosper.

In that routine, he makes a mistake, confusing Uganda and Tanganika. Uganda was never a German colony. It was a British Protectorate (not a colony). We just swanned up and took over, and the Ugandans did not seem to mind very much. So we didn't defeat them. A rare error on his part.

@@theabcdealer Oh, yeah, there was a bit of a civil war with the Ugandans converted by our Protestants defeating a bunch of Ugandans converted by French Catholics, so obviously it was a win for us, but the Germans did not get a look-in.
Hello Amanda, listened and watched your posts over the last few weeks. What a breath of fresh air you are. Such a lively upbeat take on British and American views and thoughts. We are well happy that you've settled down to life in the UK. Keep up the good work so nice not to hear people persistently knocking our country but acting as an ambassador for us instead.
AMANDA RAE I saw Al Murray live at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival a few years ago and he was totally phenomenal, I was crying with laughter throughout. Just a few minutes after the show ended I saw him in a nearby outdoor bar having a post gig pint (of course!), I congratulated him and shook his hand, he was very gracious and charming
Yes, he's always drinking pints when in character as a pub landlord. He had his own sitcom 'Time Gentleman Please' that ran for two seasons.

I know everyone is mentioning Al Murray's "Name a country, we have defeated them". but my favourite by far is his comparing accents from around the UK, that had me tittering for days. Also as someone else mentioned Rhod Gilbert's rantings are fantastic.
I'm a Geordie, nearly spilled me pint when he did the whale song.

He is always drinking pints in his stand up, as he's playing the character of an opinionated pub landlord. He used to have a TV programme called Al Murray's Happy Hour (which was essentially a comedy stand up/chat show).

Yes as the pub landlord he always has a pint in his hand. Best part of it is most of that is unrehearsed and improvised because he just picks out a member of the audience and just goes from there. My daughter saw him live and he did just that and asked where people were from and then went from there as his knowledge of this country and it’s accents, it’s history and the history of the world and it’s people is second to none. A very funny man indeed.
Amanda, it would appear that I am an addict, not to forbidden substances, but to your ALWAYS entertaining posts on RUclips, I am 88 years of age, and more or less restricted in my movement, but I only need to use a couple of fingers to get to see what you are reviewing on your page, and it cheers me up every time.

It makes an enormous change to see someone do a reaction video from a different country and actually watch it, listen to it, react to it. So many just look and seem completely confused or just brain-dead.
You on the other hand are a breath of fresh air. As Baron pointed out, your audio is spot on. Your voice is soft, you laugh and cry when you are are supposed to and at the jokes; because you understand them and not because you are confused. You are clearly an intelligent person with a massive sense of humour.

Recently watched a video about his life. He is a clever and cultured man. His comedy is down to chance. His subjects, pure comedy stuff. Nobody is spared.
Hi Amanda, as stated, Al is playing the part of a typical English, old school, Pub Landlord. Loud mouth, poorly educated, etc., but thinks differently. His grandfather was the former British Ambassador, Sir Ralph Murray and Al is Oxford educated. Seen him live. Don't sit in the first three rows, if you go!

Al is playing a character of a pub landlord in times gone by, who would 'have one for himself' as in a pint of something and saw himself as 'a fountain of knowledge' talking away to his customers. In reality Al isn't bald and I believe shaves his hair and beard off for his characterisation.

One of my favourite British stand-up comedians is Milton Jones. He occasionally appear on BBC2's Mock the Week. His type of humour is somewhat unpredictable and wacky, which is just like his hair style, which makes him look as though he's just returned from an Hawaiian holiday in an airplane with no roof. What you really need to watch is "An Audience with Billy Connolly" for the sketch about the incontinence pants. Highly visual and side splittingly funny.

Thing about Billy Connolly is that if you go to see him live you come out in pain from laughing so much. Then you go home and folks ask, "How was it?" and you go, "Great! Never laughed so much in my life". Then of course they ask, "What did he say?" and you go, "Er... dunno, cant remember, something about wanking, and maybe a dwarf". Happens every time.

A good friend of mine used to run a comedy club many years ago, and Al Murray was a regular act. One day he asked her whether instead of using the stage, he could do his set from the bar. She agreed to it, the "pub landlord" was born, and the rest is history.
It's hilarious that he supposedly started making fun of Americans, but the clip overall was there to make brutal fun of the Brits! Brilliantly done!

As many have mentioned, Al plays a character who (he runs a pub) is a British patriot who has an interesting take on the world and Great Britain's part in it. Very funny, and very interesting to watch him viewed through different eyes.

Al Murray actually describes his pub landlord character as a Conservative, know-nothing, know-all blowhard who is very opinionated. Very funny but also at the same time quite irritating when he is always telling people in the audience to "give themselves a round of applause" for no apparent reason.

He is murderously funny.
But also incredibly bright. I have seen him twice now and the banter with the audience includes incredible memory for details, names, jobs, foibles etc. and he has no advance warning or information about the crowd.
He recalled the first four rows at one gig - every person except one (my son) who he failed to ‘pick on’ and even then at the after-show book signing, he remembered where we were sitting and that he had not ‘selected’ him.
And being a ‘student’ would have got him both barrels😂

Hilarious... I used to see him quite regularly walking down Chiswick high road with his children doing the shopping just being a normal dad. A very funny and clever man.

If you haven't seen him yet have a look at Rhod Gilbert, very few funny stand ups in UK now.
If you haven't seen them yet, there's a couple of comedy series that defined a generation. I think they're all on RUclips now. The first is Spaced, which was the series that launched Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and director Edgar Wright into orbit. The second is Black Books, about an incredibly bad-tempered, drunken Irish bookseller called Bernard Black, starring Dylan Moran, Bill Bailey and Tamsin Greig. They're both outstanding. Of an era, but weathered well.
British humour just love it and your reaction to it,you have to be able to laugh at yourself.

"The Pub Landlord" is a character he plays sometimes for his gigs.... He also does comedy as himself.
You should also check out his history programs. He has a great way of telling a story about WW2 and is incredibly knowledgeable.
He has a podcast, "We have ways of making you talk" which is well worth a listen if you like WW2 history.

Hi Amanda, love watching you laughing at the best of British comedy. Take a look at Fawlty Towers where Basil has a German guest at his hotel and tells his staff not to mention the war. So funny.
Alastair Murray’s got into comedy through the Oxford Revue ( at the university) where many really famous comedians and actors came from........He’s professionally Al Murray, The Pub Landlord.......over the years he’s developed the stage props of a bar etc. The drink is non alcoholic, as law in the U.K. doesn’t allow him to drink proper booze on stage. He’s got a degree in History from Oxford (clever lad, then) and is involved in historical programmes on TV as well as his comic skills. He’s a gifted narrator.

I'm no fan of an American accent but her voice is like velvet. Lovely.
His character the Pub Landlord is so different to Al in real life. He’s a really well informed military historian who led has made quite a few historical documentaries. Miles away for his on stage persona.
Definitely give Frankie Boyle a go, brace yourself for the language and accent though. Jimmy Carr as well, awesome live.

He’s very strong at times. We don’t see him on tv very often because of how close to the bone he can be. But he’s really the desk heart of comedy.

Yeah - Four Candles is regarded as the greatest sketches ever and dead parrot is not that far behind.
