    Hi Sam, again... The water alarm looks like a massive Toe breaker, especially in rough water. I have 1 that has a wired sensor that drops down to the floor or wherever you want to set it at although you would have to hide the wire and maybe Velcro it down. Also, the use of some of those tiny super strong magnets set up to hold doors open or closed work well. Either magnet facing magnet or facing magnetic Stainless steel. Use aquarium sealant to glue them to the fiberglass. 3. Keep New spare belts and the old as emergency spares, or dump them. (Be safe please) Keep on flowing, not rowing! Actually your hoses are looking kind aged, cracked and have some dry rot. Engine should be run till oil is warm before changing, it flows easier and puts some of the sludge back in suspension. Oooo, oil filter way to tight, oil rubber seal, screw on till you feel it, then 1/4 to 1/2 turn more. WD-40 isn't actually a true lubricant. Look it up. I only say all this to help keep you safe and I have 66 years of knowledge to share!

      @@marceld6061 Good point. from an online sailing magazine "All pieces of metal, such as an engine or an anchor, can cause magnetic forces. And also stereo speakers and other electric equipment or wiring, introduce errors in compass heading" . I believe you check Magnetic north for "your" boat, then shoot true north and figure out the difference for your boat and always use that deviation in your charts. Or turn on your GPS😊 More than 36" away from a compass should be maintained since Magnetic force obeys an inverse square law with distance. And, all metal affects a magnetic field, even copper wires in a generator produce electricity via spinning magnets.

    • @bryanbsa8927
      @bryanbsa8927 4 года назад +2

      @@icemanalaska5461Not talking about oil coating the components, that is a good thing. Warming up the oil does 2 things, it make it flow easier, and puts some of the particles in suspension instead of sitting on the bottom of the oil pan. It's called sludge, and you sound as if you've never had a oil pan off in your life, or an automotive class. Seriously, live and learn.

    • @dsmoll91
      @dsmoll91 4 года назад

      Bryan Bsa magnetic deviation is the compass error due to local interruption, aka any ferrous metal on the boat. Usually not a huge difference, -3 to +3 degrees. Variation is the geographical magnetic difference depending where you’re at on the planet. Both are used to solve for a true fix. For day sailing in sight of land you’ll probably get a decent compass reading without plugging in either variation or deviation...enough to get by at least 🤷‍♂️

    Sam, great videos, keep tthem coming. A few years ago they removed the sulfur from diesel fuel. It acted like a biocide keeping the organics from growing in the fuel. They produce sludge and water and will clog your filter in a heartbeat. Proper maintence now requires periodic fuel polishing whick adds a chemical to the fuel tank that causes the organics to die and fall to the bottom of your fuel tank where you vaccuum the fuel through a filter or several filters until its clean. I would also recommend a double fuel filter system with a swap valve to change to the clean filter when the in service filter clogs so you can keep the engine running. A pressure gauge on the filter outflow can also tell you the condition of the filter.

    • @wallacegrommet9343
      @wallacegrommet9343 4 года назад

      The best diesel fuel biocide for suppressing fungal organisms seems to be Biobor. Extremely concentrated and powerful. I had fuel starvation and slime blocked fuel filters my first year running old diesel that came with the boat at purchase. Used Biobor and the problem has completely stopped. It also helps that the fuel supply has a return path so the longer the engine runs the more it is filtered. Expect to change the big primary filter more frequently until the fuel gets clean and the microbial sediment is gone

      The fuel is trying to revert to crude, it not necessarily organisms. I don't use any biobarf or anything. Diesel is very unstable. Use the fuel. Do not keep the tank full unless you're going to use it. So many Wives tales.

    Sam. Great maintenance tasks all..... That water alarm, the sensor on the bottom is detachable if you want a smaller footprint item at the sensing place, and the box can go elsewhere with the attached wiring.
    I have the same engine, take care of it and it will run forever. I close my fuel valve between the Racor primary filter and the tank so when I open it, all the fuel does not run out of the fuel lines to the tank. Yes, drain the crud out of the bottom of the Racor, refill as you did to near the top. Use the supplied two rubber o-rings to insure an airtight seal, as there is a slight vacuum when fuel is pulled via the on-engine fuel pump. Yes, you have air in the fuel system now, not uncommon. Read up and or video on the Yanmar 2GM - 3GM fuel bleed technique. Bleed secondary filter first, if you open the top valve and pump the manual on-engine fuel pump lever 20-30 times fuel should come out the top of the secondary on-engine filter vent. If you do it right, you may not have to bleed the rest of the system at all. (too late for this time). Second step if necessary bleed valve on top of the fuel injector, third step crack the injectors at the cylinders one at a time until fuel (having a buddy to crank helps). learn how to do this now, you will need this technique again while cruising.
    Absolutely, as others have advised, close the engine raw water intake seacock while cranking engine during fuel bleed process (or any time it does not start quickly) to avoid pumping water back into the cylinders via the exhaust manifold from the exhaust water injection point. Yes, the exhaust water injection fitting only lasts about five years in salt water, get a spare before you leave on your trip. Take that one off and inspect it for carbon build-up and rust. If the least bit compromised then change it now. It will fail when you least want it to, with water and exhaust in the cabin. Take at least three Racor spare filters with you.
    You are doing great. Wish I could impart my 40 years of experience to you, but you are a fearless capable lad. You got this. All the best. I was so impressed with your Pacific crossing.

      Buy the service manual for your engine, probably has a lot of this in it... Light reading if bored sometime, and learn what you can, better to familiarize yourself with it (doing good visual inspection on camera, and can go back to compare, or backtrack if needed). Compression test like an auto, usually before buying for rings and major stuff, warped heads, etc...

    Good work. A few pointers. Don’t continue to crank the motor. Always close the seacock for the raw water intake until the motor starts and then open it. The motor could hydro lock if you don’t. Possibly mess up the motor. Also when changing the small fuel filter. It Locks itself on without the bowl. Do that first and then screw on the bowl. Also run the motor to warm up the oil and suspend any contamination before draining out the oil. Be careful putting a lot of leverage on the frozen seacocks. They could break. You need to get a set of emergency seacock wooden plugs. Large enough for any thru Hull .
    Enjoy watching your videos. You give this old man incentive to do work on my own sailboat.

    Hi Sam. I really enjoyed seeing your vlogs. Time flew by. I have done a little sailing. A 79ft from England to Cherbourg via Alderney and some messing about in the Solent. I was just crew and didn't really have a clue. Everyone was seasick except me and another bloke. That was the last century though. I have subscribed and look forward to seeing more. The sea is miles away from here in the Peak District but it's ok as I can watch your vlogs. All the best mate and happy sailing.

    Great video yet again. Loved watching you do what I did when I first purchased my yacht not long ago. You are probably right re the heat exchanger, mine was not too bad but the hose from the pump to the exchanger is worth removing to check, mine had bits in it at the face of the inlet to the exchanger, previous impellers failing. Also,there should be sacrificial zincs for it, check those. Agree with others, run the engine a little prior to oil change, be gentle when “tightening” the oil filter. And add biocide to your fuel tank - we have similar problems with diesel here in Oz. Great advice from the other viewer re fuel cleaning. Clean the tank,you’ll not regret it as the gunk will slosh while sailing and then the motor will cut just when you need it most, Murphy’s Law at sea.
    Was white knuckled when watching you get those seacocks moving again. Not sure I’d have been so brave to do that while still afloat. Hope you had a bung handy.
    Safe travels across country, fair winds

      Thanks for the suggestions. believe it or not, the 2gm20f doesn't use zincs. I looked everywhere for them before I eventually looked it up. Cheers!

    I need to put a door like that on my cascade 29. It currently has the individual slats that go in one at a time. What a pain.

    The impellers have been very dependable for me, and are in good condition even after four years

    There are plastic razor blades that are perfect for removing decals without scratching or damaging the gelcoat!

    I used a single edge razor blade, not a box cutter style blade to remove the last decal. I soaked a paper towel with some goo-gone and held it over the old decal for a few minutes then was able to peel up a bit of the edge and get the blade under and it came off pretty easily. I think it will mostly depend upon what kind of paint/finish is on the boat though. That seems to mostly determine how stubborn it will be.

    I saw someone else said one edge blade too they work better on tape also heat works great a blow dryer or heat gun can work, direct sunlight if it’s warm enough helps.

    Another interesting video. You're making good progress. I'm reliving my sailing days vicariously while watching your videos. There's a place in the exhaust system that can cause a hard to diagnose issue. Took me a while to figure out why the overboard exhaust outlet was showing some steam and a somewhat reduced water flow. Turned out there was carbon build up in the cast iron mixing elbow right where the water mixed with the exhaust. The restriction was preventing full water flow which caused the engine to run a bit too warm. Was easy to chip the carbon away once I had the elbow off and upside down so I could see the restriction.

      I've heard those can be troublesome. I see they also make stainless replacements. I might look into that if mine needs to be replaced
