I'm 68 years old , looking to find a boat to sail on, hopefully for a long sail , it's the last thing on my bucket list, before I leave this world.
You encourage me young man , just want you to know that, thankyou.
I'm 73 with no experience except watching these sailing videos for 4 years. want to be crew on a boat
You still have a lot left man!

@@woreoutdavinciconstruction4060 WTF is that supposed to mean? Sam has his own problems. He's just a positive person. You can't pick your circumstances, but you can choose how you react to those circumstances. Yes, it's a deterministic universe and you have limited freedom.
"I'm so frustrated with this thing!" (said while still smiling). "There's a shark! But I'm going back out. This time I'll take knife." (said while still smiling). I love this channel. The World needs more of this kind of relentless optimism and willingness to just not let anything stop ya. Keep up the good work, Sam!

Indeed Mark R.
Mark Rebuck it's called being resilient
It inspires me that he never breaks from a shit eating grin. Perseverance and tenacity are essential!
It all made sense to me after he revealed he had a colostomy bag. I guess if you survive, what, colon cancer? at such a young age one must think they have nothing to lose. seize the day, right?
Sam, I want to reiterate what many others have said here. The light screws for the padeye for the safety harness are too light. I am retired from the USCG. I have pitch poled on a 44. I have seen deck fittings that were bolted into a steel deck pulled free. I saw a coxswains chair with multiple bolts ripped from the deck. I applaud your desire to make yourself safe. But please beef up the anchor points.
Additionally if you can get rid of the shackle on the mast for the whisker pole/spinnaker pole you will be much better off. During the video I saw the shackle slide to the leward side of the mast. thus when you apply back pressure on the outboard end of the pole you risk putting the pole in a bind and snapping the pole. You would be better off to put a larger ring on your mast that will accommodate the pole and keep it on the front of the mast and not off to the leward side.
Fair winds.
Son, please listen to these people who are giving advice regarding your safety! Please.
Well I’d have to say, Sam, the USCG is somewhat of an expert, this is minor for you to do, get us all off your back, lol

Came here to say this!
Your videos inspired me to buy a sailboat and learn to sail. I managed to purchase a 1977 30' Pearson and sail it up and down the Florida coast. Thanks for sharing and safe travels!
1964 Pearson Vanguard was my first real sailboat. I miss her. She was fine to sail. ❤
How much does something like that cost?
@itsOZone I paid $5500.00 for the 1977 Pearson and sold it for $7500.00 two months later. Then I bought a Catalina 30 1994 for $20,000. I am currently preparing for our next trip. Last season, I lived on the sailboat for six months, and it was amazing.
One thing I genuinely enjoy about your videos is not having constant music in the background! It's nice not to hear some non-copyright acoustic guitar.
Thanks for mentioning that, I enjoy watching videos, but the music is annoying.
Me too.
Amen

Two more comments about safety.
#1. Always have a 75' line attached to you if you leave your boat and it is not anchored securely.
#2. Find a good size diving knife and wear a thigh scabbard with the knife in it. Make sure it is secured to you with a line too.
Doing both of these things could save your life.
Tying a fender to a medium long line cleated to the stern works well.
Excellent stuff Sam . I used to be a delivery ( mostly single handed until the insurance companies insisted I had to have crew) captain after sailing all over the World . Advice , all tethered points for your personal safety harness should be machine screws or bolts with fender washers and nuts . I lost a good friend in the Indian Ocean as the deck fitting for his harness was screwed and not bolted. Thanks for all the great videos .
GHA, I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. I spent along time sailing in the IO but I did it on a 1000' aircraft carrier. We too lost a sailor in the IO during bad weather, he worked in my division. I worked on the flight-deck catching aircraft on the arresting gear engines. That was great advice you gave Sam, be safe my friend...
Sam, dont use screws for your safety harness pad eyes! They need to be through bolted and probably add a backing plate.
Keep up the videos, probably one of my favorite channels I've come across. Hope to get out there myself some day.
Sam. You will probably never see this, but you mentioned your cables slapping around inside your mast. I had the same thing on my Ericson 26. Bugged the heck out of me. So I took the mast down and pulled the cables out and got some big honking zip ties and tied the cables together in a bundle but left the tails on. Each tie was about a foot apart. When I put it back in the mast all the tie tails braced the cable cluster and no more slapping around. It worked great and was very cheap. No conduit necessary. Love the videos, Thanks.
To fix noisy cables inside your mast without installing conduit: Pull the cable, then attach long zip ties every 12", 120 degrees apart - don't cut the tails off the zip ties. Re-install the cables in the mast. The zip ties will prevent the cables from slapping, but will not interfere with internal halyards.
That's a great idea and I saw that Sam did exactly that! Good on you!
Use UV resistant zip ties. A quality brand like Ty-Rap or Panduit. Home depot stuff will fail quickly.
As a long time sailor, I would like to give you my advise - take it for what it is worth. Your fittings you attached for your Jack Lines appeared to only be screwed into the fiberglass - do you really think the shock load of you falling overboard tethered to that will hold? They should be thru bolted with fender washers and sealed with bedding compound - i.e.. 3M4200 or Butyl tape. You need to protect all fastenings you do on the boat from corrosion and moisture leakage. I admire your adventurous spirit, but some things need to be done right the first time. Also clean up your lines - coil them correctly.
Mark Friebertshauser dang. Seems kinda dangerous to not do things as bet as possible before long sails :/
I hope he sees this ASAP & fixes whatever that stuff is
Sam, You have convinced me to go for it. I'm 69 yrs. old and have very little sailing experience. Between lack of money and lack of confidence I almost gave up. I think I will buy a salvage boat in the keys and work on her. Thank you very much I'm a bird person too
A sailing channel that actually shows sailing! Great video. Thanks.
I always put Sam's videos on in the background while I do my design work. Very relaxing and the little doses of serotonin from listening to him have a good time keeps me happy and productive.
I am absolutely in love with how tame those birds are I cannot wait to sail and see them for myself!
The whole "going for a swim in the open ocean" thing seems terrifying to me
With light winds and a line in hand connected to boat I’d be ok with that. What are the risks?

The cut after you saw the shark made me laugh so hard. Man, these videos make me want to learn how to sail and learn it well enough to do it full-time.
Sam, you are a serious inspiration to me, man. We're about the same age, and I want to save up my money for my first boat after following your sailing videos for so long now. You really showed me how possible living a solo life of adventure could be (without Van Life lol).

This has to be one of my favorite sailing videos ever. It really make me want to go sailing. Thanks!
Questions came up when you went by that "random antenna" in the middle of the ocean. 1. Was it on charts? 2. Do you have some kind of forward warning radar that goes off if you are going to hit something? Like for when you are down below and would possibly run into something like that.
Exactly

You're always so happy, it's so infectious. I can see the excitement for adventure you have and I would love to sail with you one day.
Thanks Sam. That Boat upon entering Jefferson seemed a little close there, from left to right.

Sam you really make me laugh some times. Your level of relaxation towards problems and challenges is amazing. I just got myself a 27 that I am getting ready for some solo adventures like you. I hope I can keep the cool like you. So what was the deal about the shackle? Jajajaj. Anyways keep the adventures that many of us are watching after you and your good spirit

Fantastic trip! Great content all around Sam! Thank you for taking us with you.
You are going love your Cape Dory! Great in heavy weather and a pig in light air. But they are stout!
Like so many others have posted, I find your videos extremely informative and highly enjoyable. I too, am looking to change my life and buy a boat to live on for the rest of my days with many ocean crossings and trips around the world. However, I have been told by many that you need at least a 38 ft or longer boat to cross oceans safely. What makes YOU so unique is that you’re proving that theory to be wrong and that crossing oceans can be quite safe and enjoyable in a smaller boat. Smaller boats also have the advantage of lower costs overall too. So the more I watch your videos, the more I’m learning a whole new way to reach my sailboat dream. I cannot thank you enough for that!! Also, you use a lot of sailing terminology in a way that teaches me what they mean and I love your technical explanations, especially when you use your whiteboard to illustrate (like you did with the anchor line explanation). I absolutely LOVE your “how to” segments you do…like your cooking at sea!! You make an excellent sailing educator!! But most of all, you prove that solo sailing around the world in a small boat (less than 38 ft) is possible, doable, enjoyable, safe, and relatively affordable by even poor people like me!! This is one of the best inspirations for me to reach my dreams I’ve ever encountered anywhere. Thank you!! Thank you!! Thank you!! 🤠👍🏻👏
+10 for Henrietta reference! Also, thrilled to see more fishing, hoping for more of that in the future. LOVE this stuff.
Loved the long video. Thanks for taking us along with you.

Sailing solo on an awesome boat in an awesome ocean on an awesome planet, how lucky are you? That's awesome!!! (What else could it be!?) Then you get a wild bird to hang out with you then stay on your finger...and you caught it on video!! How blessed! You are a kind and gentle man, cheers my friend. What an incredible chapter in your life you're living, I'm sure you don't need anyone to tell you..but just in case, don't take anything for granted, thank God daily, pray, and don't change who you are because you're a wonderful man!
If they installed conduit in the mast then the conduit would've been slappin around just like whatever was already slappin around. There's quite a few tricks to get things inside the mast to quiet down.
Big fan of your long videos, keep up the fantastic work and informative content. Hope more trips come soon!

Oh wow! So pretty there. Might be nice to have a travel fishing pole, that folds up. I imagine it must be so difficult to film this, very exciting to see actual sailing happening close up, and how you handle all the issues. It feels like sailing would take your whole life, to find all the ins and outs of it.
That is absolutely amazing that bird stepped onto your hand!! Especially for a wild bird.
Hey Sam, been watching a ton of videos getting ready to retire to sailing. I always hope to catch at least one new thing in every video. When I saw you getting ready to leave and you were tightening the windows closed this prompted me (which I haven't seen anyone else do or talk about) to add to my list. Create a check list for everything. Coming out of dry dock list, going into dry dock list, getting ready to long sail list, short sail list. Turning off all electrical list, Packing in for the season list and so on...
Also the rear view mirror, nice. Think I will also try to create some kind of mirror that will point up (angled such that I can see the sails all the way up too. THANKS

Great job! Love your tenacity. You're very brave.
Thanks Sam. I watched this in stages at my leisure and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm sure you are so fond of your capable little boat and many viewers are becoming so too. Getting the bird to go onto your hand was incredible. I bet they are well knackered...probably flown over from Africa? Looking forward to your next vlog.
A definition of a terrifying sound is hearing a shackle pin hit the deck! ahaha
