7 days alone offshore in the Gulf Stream. Florida to North Carolina.

- After waiting out bad weather in the Dry Tortugas we sail back to Key West. I drop off Zoe and set out alone offshore for a 7 day passage up the Gulf Stream. When the wind turns against the stream, the waves get big! Eventually I make landfall in Southport North Carolina.

I was about to say... my man isn't sailing alone anymore since he got Zoe his boat maiden :)
For those of us she haters! Thanks!
Sam, I’m a very busy dad of 3. I’m 49 and my dreams of learning to sail don’t exactly excite my wife (lol) but it’s just great to live vicariously through your adventures. So exciting to listen to everything on noise canceling headphones. Great job and I’m looking forward to some merch.
Who on earth could give a thumbs down to these videos! This guy is living the Dream in every sense of the expression! If you ever make it to Seattle, I’ll stop by to say hi! 🍻
Thomas, in the same boat here...only add the dog...Sam, let us know if you visit Baltimore or Annapolis...
Do your dreams excite you? Make time for yourself, man. Nobody else will. In the end, the only things you'll regret are the things you wanted to do in life but didn't even attempt.
Thomas, I'm in the same "boat". Father (39) of two (6 yr old girl, 9 yr old boy) and the wife has a fear of the ocean. I want to retire and sail the world, but she is supportive once the kids are out of the best and we have finances in order. I hope you can live your dream, even if it's later than you wanted.
I have disliked videos by accident a few times, due to rogue taps on the ole smartphone or iPad. It happens.
@Fred Flintstone that's good advice! Sam also prefers dealing with smaller vessels overall. The bigger the boat, the less likely you'll have time to sail it because you're always fixing stuff. Unfortunately, we didnt have a sailboat when Sam was a kid but we did send him to sailing day camp for a couple summers. We had kayaks which is another easy, inexpensive way get your kids on the water.
Life is good when a jar of pickles is the highlight of the day
A jar of pickles is definitely a highlight to any day. Love pickles!
Yeah I like when he said they’re still good. They’re pickled of course they are still good....They don’t even need to be refrigerated
And he gives them a sniff lol
Very well said!
You’ve gotta try the Claussen hearty garlic (sandwich slices are my pref). My god, they’re insanely awesome ♥️ Life changing lol
Your channel is one of the best on RUclips. No crappy piped music just the fantasic Music of the seas and the wind.
Thank you for sharing.
Warren s/y Legend
Some of the others music is just horrible badly picked for the activities why bother ?
Love your solo sailing vids. Your passage from LA to Hawaii lit a fire in me. A girl from Boston who has never set foot on a sailboat. But now my husband and I are taking the ASA 101 & 103 in two weeks as our vacation. Thank you Sam!
Right on! ⛵️
That’s so awesome
Sam has the most upbeat attitude. He is the only captain that still can smile when he runs aground or things go wrong. Keep sailing, keep smiling and stay cool.
One of the best things about Sam's videos in the natural sound of the waves and ocean. It puts you right there.
It's weird how stressed out I get when the weather gets really rough out there. I mean, I KNOW Sam is gonna make it. I've seen videos more recent than this one. So why worry? What a blast this channel is.
Sam never stopped smiling, even when his eyes were full of fear. It was almost a death's-head grin for a while there. That's sailoring!
That was freaking epic that is what people are wanting to see! 🇺🇸🙏🏻💪⚓️🎖
You sir are living my dream. When I finally decide to throw in the towel at work, I'm going to learn as much as I can about navigating the seas, and then I'm going to buy a boat and sail off! Thanks for posting your adventures brother.
After hitting a log and dealing with a broken alternator you find a bottle of pickles and say still good. You da man!!!
Those SpaceX boats are Go Ms Chief and Go Ms Tree. Meant for catching the nose fairings (payload coverings) of their Falcon 9 rockets as they parachute down from a launch. There are two fairings on their rockets so they sent two boats; One for each fairing. The fairings are worth a couple million each so it's definitely worth trying to catch and reuse them. Mr. Steven was the original fairing catcher out of Los Angeles until the original company went bankrupt so SpaceX bought them out and moved them to the East coast where more launches occur.
Cool!
24:35 "that was legitimately scary"... Not the words this mom likes to hear 😳. But, of course, he is STILL smiling when he says it.
Wow thanks for the info. Awesome
@@samholmessailing You're cool, Sam!
I remember getting so excited over a can of Beenie Weenies.
Sam, you did a fantastic job on this video. Really gets across the experience. In fact, I think I'll watch it again!!!
I haven’t been off shore since ‘95. You bring back a lot of memories!
Love the style of these videos! Just plain and simple yet still enough detail to get an idea of what it’s like out there. It reminded me a lot of another youtuber Colin Haley who documents his alpine climbs - and then I realized that sounds like his voice around 0:39! You guys have a similar style and it’s great!
The closest I have ever gone to a boat is looking at the supply vessels load up at my work, you sir have an amazing smile and a great attitude, hats off to you sir
So good man! I'm a year into solo sailing from Greece back to Australia. Haven't made any vids yet despite watching loads on RUclips. You've inspired me to get started. Keep up the good work hombre.
Love your videos Sam! No other sailing content as authentic as yours
Haha I’ve been watching some of your older videos and my favorite part of this one is “I found a jar of pickles”
I feel like this authentic video, especially with a good title as it has, should gain some nice traction. You have had some big adventures afloat! Stay well Sam.
Thank you Sam from South African sailor.
Living life to the fullest !!! I have been researching sailing trips for my fiancé and I. At 46 I feel it’s time to start working on that bucket list.
I love seeing the inside of your boat. it's interesting . It shows how you're living in the moment
Still have not idea how you ended up in my feed but I certainly enjoy watching these! Congrats on making this happen for you!
He ended up in my feed after watching a bunch of windsurfing videos. I was like, "Who is this guy with the teeth?", but then I watched his Pacific crossing and I've been hooked ever since.
Great looking yachts at 4:35
Best video so far? Everyone has their opinion but this one might be mine. No Henrietta but the sailing was just fantastic. Thanks Sam, you are such an inspiration.
Leaning off the boat to relieve oneself without being attached to the boat, and just "holding on" seems like a sure-fire way to ultimately fall off the boat and drown.
I love you Sam and I’m glad you made it safe
You inspire me so much! Really looking forward to the next adventure.
this Sam ROCKS...
It has been amazing to follow your journey from neophyte sailor to where you are now.
You have learned and seen so much since that first sail from Cali to Hawai'i.
It is has been wonderful to be along with you.
Thank you for sharing your adventures Sam!!!
Thanks for sharing this cool trip! Weather can get really tricky out there and meanwhile having second thoughts and fixing elderly equipment gives a real twisted kick to these passages, RESPECT!
Thanks!
Sea and sky look amazing at 20 minutes or so, love these vids, so relaxing to watch.
You are one brave man. I admire you.
Your passage to Hawaii has ignited a need to sail myself. At least a mild obsession. Thank you so much for documenting your journey!
This is one of my favorite SHS videos.
I would never go in the water without being roped to the boat securely, never.
Yaa..dive with a rope..55 now....5yrs ago and back....iv always just dove......but iv had a few cramps now..I c how people drown
Big ocean for that boat to float away
Then you are shark bait!
Where are you guys from? I grew up in Venice beach in 1960 on. 2909 beach ave. Venice Beach. Across from marina del Rey!
@@JBrecht16 yes, current can be more deadly than wind, Hell gate in NYC.. But also those squalls change everything very fast. LIFELINE has a very important meaning; never leave boat without it.
Calm, cool and collected! Quite the sailor! ⛵️
Is this the guy that sailed from California to Hawaii by himself?
Yes. Kicking off the dock. As soon as he got into open ocean, he got sea sick.
He tssid he caught one this big and I laughing with my coz in Looe
@@kriley9386 ...Lots of salty sailors still get seasick. Perhaps you know some of them? Probably not, otherwise you'd lay off the snark.
yes in a 23 oday, which I just bought
Think it was a Ranger 23... Not ODay
Sam,
Good way to fix leaks through small cracks is to mix up some silastic RTV with mineral turpentine. Takes a few minutes of persistent stirring to get it to dissolve but it will eventually. Start with a 50/50 mix and aim for an easy pourability. Pour around the joint or fill a disposable syringe to squirt up hill. The silicon solution will permeate the joint and over a few hours the turps will evaporate leaving a thin flexible cured film. Stay safe!
Seems like a great idea, that i might borrow. Sam seems to be, if things just work, it's OK 😆
The water was so clear! Beautiful
NOOOO.... ZOEY PLEASE COME BACK!!! Going to miss her beauty and her smile that is for sure. Sail on Sam, be well. Keep these awesome vids coming Skipper.
You are "the man" Sam !!! Keep it up ! enjoying you videos :-)
dude your unusually fearless.
Great video! Thanks so much for letting me tag along.
MY IDEA FOR MERCHANDISE IS A NICE “T” shirt with your big smile face and the logo
“KEEP ON SMILING.” “Sailor Sam”
Great video. Thanx for sharing!
"Stuff breaks, stuff breaks, stuff breaks", that's my new mantra thanks 😂
Keep it up Sam! Best sailing channel ever.
So chill despite those gnarly seas @25 minutes. Thats what experience will do for ya. I am looking forward to being tested like this in my T34c. These videos are inspirational.
"I just found a jar of pickles, this is an exciting day." I would be legitly happy to find a jar of pickles anywhere but especially being out in the middle of the ocean, definitely more enjoyable!! Thanks for the entertainment =]
As someone who has watched a lot of your videos, ive become quite interested in sailing. Is there any way you could make a video where you could give some instruction on how to get started in sailing? Like how did you get your start? How much experience did you have before you felt comfortable going out for long trips?
If you've already made a video like this, and Ive just missed it, let me know please!
I appreciate the content a lot!
Great channel...love your Down to earth personality 🙂
Hey Sam, glad to see we are both fans of Founders "All Day IPA"
Its good stuff!
When you 1st approach/enter the gulf stream you can actually see the top water moving differently. Pretty amazing sight. Makes power drifting way more difficult.
You are a great sailor! Thank you for sharing.
Another cool video!
I really enjoy watching your videos.
Wonderful stuff Skipper Sam, look after yourself and best of luck with the upcoming maintenance, great video, thankyou.
Yep, Sam is still a badass! Love your can do attitude. Stay safe out there.
Hello Mate!!! Sam you are such an inspiration, thank you for your posts.
I'm so happy to see you have a motorized dinghy now. I remember you pumping up a green canoe and using a snorkeling fin to paddle yourself in high winds to a dock to get supplies. Your the man...dude!!
You're an awesome guy Sam. I love watching your videos.
Nice video Sam. I really enjoyed that one. Thanks.
I've seen big waves like that while aboard Navy ships, where the water came all the way up to the smoke deck. Super intimidating. Can't wait to experience it in my own boat.
Thanks for sharing your journey! We fish in the gulf stream off of south Florida for swordfish. Your absolutly right about it churning up when that wind turns!
We learned from having an on-board for over a decade... don't have an inboard. We sold that sailboat and bought one that was 2' shorter with an OUTBOARD motor on the back. It's much easier to work on and honestly everything else, too! We were always fighting the inboard... always fixing something, replacing this, doing that. It got annoying. No more! The outboard is such a better option, and you get more room on the boat! Win win!
I miss Zoe already too. What a sweetheart!
Excellent adventure young sailin man !!! Living the dream WELL DONE and much appreciated ✌️ 🙏👍
Great video. Definatelly a testament of the cape dorys seaworthiness.
Sam you are a movie star! I sent all my brothers your video!!! Thank you! Jim.
Love watching your videos geezer. Hope you continue. Anyway chap, take care, and happy sailing to you. From Nick, in sunny cornwall uk.
Sweet! Hope all is well!!
As a music teacher, I need to hear some of that saxophone playing!
Just discovered your channel and I am really impressed with your skills and amazing positive attitude. Now I’ll have to go back and watch them all. One day I hope to get some sailing adventures in if I can just get retired. Maybe not as hard core like this was though. Man that looked scary out there!
Sam.. your new clamp on cup holder. could be used to catch those drips. .LOL sad to see your friend go.. glad to see almost 50000 subscribers!!!
New to channel. Sailing is my life long dream. Love the videos!
That one actually made me a little bit tense, and I'm in the hills. Good job man..👍
Great video, Sam! way to own those waves.
Love seeing the pure adventure of it all. The best part was you explaining the legit scary wave. Keep em coming!
Weather forecasts are taken with a grain of salt, haha! But it's been smooth sailing until it got to 20 knots, glad you got to Southport safe!
Good going. 👍
At 3:39 🤣🤣🤣
The dinghy is called "Gravlax" that's, "raw spiced salmon" in Swedish.
You are a funny man, Sam.
Sam !! You’re the best!! Thanks
Michael
My friend described his forty-foot sailboat as: "my hole in the water I through money into."
we have a sign that says that at my sailing club
Sure is!
Why did you sell the dingy? Was the motor ruined? Why didn’t Zoe continue? She gave up?
Back when i was learning to sail in Australia, the yacht master described owning a boat was similar to "Standing in a cold shower while tearing up $100 bills" lol
old joke of course it applies to all, house, kids, human body. truck, dirt bike, horse.
boats, dog. while with your coffee, contemplate, what gives the most pleasure , and throw extra money..
Another awesome adventure Sam! It’s great to live at sea vicariously through your channel! I’d love to help out around the boat when you’re in the Chesapeake Bay Area. Let me know if there is an amazon wishlist you have going for parts needed on the boat or anything else to help keep this dream of yours alive!
Wonderful video as always Sam! Loved seeing those Space-X recovery vessel shots!
Absolutely supreme job . That had it all Sam. A incredible installment. Incredible!
This dude is like the lone ranger😏
Who would swim alone so far out? A Superman. I would be to worried 🦈 was waiting for me
Keep your head up! You've gone through some crazy weather amd boat problems. Safe travels.
Absolutely love your positive attitude. Main reason I subbed. I’ve never sailed but you make it seem so fun, it’s great to watch this and act like I’m there with you! Awesome energy all the time!
Glad to hear you’re enjoying the videos
This guy did it again. Amazing
Love the videos! Stay safe!
So cool man your really seeing the world.
Dude what a surprise to see the fairing catching spacex boat?!!!!?? Awesome
Love your videos Sam! Good luck on your next voyage
Thank you young man for the great footage doing something I only dream of doing.I really would like to give it a try.You do a great job narrowaiting thru your video to make them exciting and infromative.Enjoy my friend.Stay safe.
