    • @chepo1956
      @chepo1956 5 месяцев назад

      @@FierceSleepingDog I understand your point, and it's a valid one. But for the asking price, they should've improved the camera significantly. Take for example the Nikon Z9. After all their free upgrades, many users of that system have basically felt they have a completely new camera; all free. They would have shown more respect to their customers and saved a ton of money by making a good firmware upgrade, instead of making a whole new camera just for the sake of putting OM Systems on the front.

    • @fritzfilter

      @@FierceSleepingDogI would pay for an update, but there are several examples for free firmware updates for improved performance (Olympus, Canon, Nikon....)

    • @rasmus_mattsson
      @rasmus_mattsson 5 месяцев назад

      @@FierceSleepingDog Because Olympus used to give pretty great upgrades, not to mention to other brands do. Fujifilm has been known for giving great upgrades as does Panasonic. Nikon with the Z9 have been superb with their upgrades, it's almost a new camera.
      Not to mention the fact that upgrading rather than releasing new when it isn't needed should be "in time" for large companies now, save resources and promote less waste. This should be extra important for OM-systems as they promote cameras for wild life and nature. So yes, they should have done most of these things with firmware updates instead. If they are struggling financially perhaps they should have released a payed firmware update but most of it should still be firmware updates.
      A real improvement they could have made for example is change one card type to CF-Express, that would have made all the difference in the world as far as write speeds go and the buffer would clear much faster. Increasing the buffer is good in it self but it won't help much when it fills and it writes slowly.
      A great camera for sure but an unnecessary intermediate release as such.

    I'm heavily invested in OM Systems with the OM1 and the 150-400mm f4.5. I see these new announcements as good and not so good. The good is that OM System is still in business. The bad is they're not making anything new. The mark II is only a rebadged OM1 with a firmware update and some rubberized buttons. The wide zoom lens announcement is a rebadged lens and the long zoom is a rebadged Sigma lens.
    The only thing I need improved on my OM1 is better video features including sticky C-AF. If this has been improved then great! However I certainly don't need a larger stills buffer. Like the G9II, it'll take longer for the buffer to clear and I'll miss the next round of action.

      Not worth at all unless you use very seriously the buffer to it's limit all the time, as macro shooter with focus bracketing or sports/wildlife pro-capture once a lifetime moments. Lateral doesn't really exist, but macro shooters benefit from 150-300 frames buffer.
      Otherwise, useless model upgrade after few years.
      If they would have made it with 36-42 Mpix sensor, it would have made sense for price.
      With such Mpix growth and keep all rest same specs, it would have been taken serious contender to many.

    This is a strong product enough to warrant a big price with its 8.5 stops IS, graduated ND, bigger reliable buffer, more sticky and human detection , stronger pro capture mode, 14 bit high res shot, blackout free shooting in various fps, improved live nd, improved focus stacking, more tactile buttons, 3 times processing power. But they should have upped the video capabilities to near G9ii standards and include 4k 120 etc, improved flash capability to warrant this price and especially considering G9 ii pricing of nearly 600 dollars less

The 300 f4 has basically replaced the 100-400 as my primary lens, but I'm very interested to see if the 150-600 could complement the 300 without spending all of the money for the 150-400.

      @@MrPetebuster1 I agree that it's not ideal, but it's a lens option that's presented itself. For me, I got into Olympus/OM Systems when I switched to mirrorless because I wanted the best weather sealing, autofocus, and image stabilization that I could afford. At that time, and probably still, that equation tilted towards m4/3. In this scenario, I'd like to explore zoom options to complement my 300 F4. The 100-400 is good, but I wish that it were faster or at least had better image stabilization. That faster/better IS lens is the 150-400, but I doubt that that lens will be a higher priority than more trips for the money. That's why I'm curious to see if the compromises that the 150-600 poses are worth upgrading/changing from the 100-400.

Even if OM systems gave owners like us the option to update our firmware for new features for a reasonable fee, I would.

    Useful video clip Espen. The OM-1 mark II has little advantage for me and could have been mostly covered by a software upgrade on the OM-1. Just an OM System rebranding exercise. As for the 150-600mm lens. This is a Sigma which is not sold by Sigma since they no longer support any further M4/3rds lens development. Since I have the 150-400mm and both TCs I can obtain all the focal length I need. I will wait for the OM-1X and a 500mm prime lens with TC attachment capability if OM Systems ever decide to go into the high level end of the market. I will not be buying either of the new OM System products and I am currently looking at the Panasonic G9 mark II for the video capability. Keep on posting your excellent wildlife video clips 👌😊

    I love Olympus and have 2 OM-1s with most pro lenses. This upgrade is a huge disappointment for me. Minor firmware improvements with increased buffer memory for higher price. Most of these could be added by firmware upgrade to OM-1, which very likely will never happen after introduction of Mark II. Not improving the video features is also a lost opportunity. The new 150-600 mm rebranded full frame Sigma lens, which can not even keep up with the highest frame rates of OM-1 or OM-1 II, for double of the price of the E or L mount versions is even more disappointing. It shows that OM SYSTEM is not doing R&D and just wants to full the loyal customers and make more money. Very sad. The only reasons I am still with the system are the 300 m F4 Pro and 150-400 f45 TC1.25x lenses, which are amazing and very portable with OM-1.

    You didn´t mention anything about if the new camera has overcome the superflaw of earlier modells regarding to AF: the inabillity to program to buttons with different AF modes. Example af-c with one af-point on the top button and af-c wtith bird recognition and full coverage of the sensor (and override over the usual top button) on the af-on button on the back. Other example used by wildlife shoters for around 10 years or more is the common double back button focus with different AF-modes on two different back buttons. For me this inabillity makes the om-1 unusable in many wildlife photo situations.

    • @LisaTom.Photos

    • @tonysvensson8314
      @tonysvensson8314 5 месяцев назад

      @@LisaTom.Photos Yes you can. And you can also asign a button to togle between bird-af and regular af-c. But this is a bad solution because on OM-1 and Olympus you can´t do the changes when AF and tracking are operating-you have to let up your index finger or your thumb and inactivate the AF and then do the changes (on two different buttons) and then activate the AF again. The result is obvious-you loose the bird/animal. Even if you train a lot it takes the extra tenths of a second that makes the oppurtunity disappear! On my Ni/Ca -cameras i can make the changes so much faster and the AF and tracking is active during the changes. I just have to press ,for example, the af-on button while i focus with the index finger top button. Then the af-on button that is programmed with bird AF overrides the top button (that has got another programming, for example AF c with the middle AF-point and no bird AF). Instant changes between the modes!

    But will 14 bit give richer colours? As I understand it, the extra information may provide better colour and tonal gradation especially in shadows, but richer colours generally, I'm not so sure. For images in flatter light that can be normally exposed, I suspect that it would be difficult, if not impossible, for the human eye to discern any improvement. I say this because I can take my current (and very old) E-M1 mk I with its 12 bit 16 MP sensor and put it up against my more recent EOS R with its 14 bit 30 MP sensor and in normal lighting get pretty much indistinguishable photos. So, yes, I think the 14 bit advancement is definitely beneficial, especially in challenging light, but I would challenge the idea that human discernable colour in average shooting situations would be universally improved.
    Yes, that's nitpicking, but it's important to communicate things realistically. Am I interested in the OM-1 Mk II? Yes, absolutely, but I need a realistic understanding of its capabilities. What I would really like to know is just how much of a DR improvement I could expect from the new camera over older models when faced with challenging light such as you find commonly in northern winter scenes. As a photographic professional working in Scotland and Norway, I am sure you know what I'm talking about. Those bright cloudless skies in very cold conditions juxtaposed against the darks of a boreal forest for instance. The original OM-D E-M1 does tend to struggle a little in those conditions--although that sensor has surprisingly good highlight recovery when you know its limits. Shadows tend to be a more challenging problem. That said, for long exposure low light shooting, I actually find the E-M1 to be generally superior to my EOS R--less sensor noise and more predictable cleaner results as long as it is tripod stabilized long exposures at base or slightly elevated ISOs.
    Anyway, I do enjoy your videos and I appreciate your thoughts on this and other photographic topics, I just wonder at the colour claim a little. Cheers.

    Please pass on a message to OMSystems that those of us that have invested in the OM1 Mark 1 (in my case, two months ago) would appreciate a firmware upgrade that incorporates some of these features. Since that is what they have promised to do.

    I skipped the OM-1 because the EM1-m3 does what I need...for the most part. The bird AI is the only thing I would like. It sounds like it got better, and the addition of 14bit high res mode for landscapes might put me over the edge.

    I use M lenses on a M camera. And I used to shoot G9 and GFX8 with a 12-40 f:2,8 and a 75 f:1,8 Olympus lenses + a 25mm Panasonic. Frankly speaking, the magic of M4/3 is not the body, even if the G9 was awesome to shoot with, but the lenses, especially Olympus ones. The size / quality ratio is unmatched. Only some Leica M lenses can compare, but not at the same price !

    I don't understand so many negative comments! I don't know if they are just haters, or if they are frustrated photographers. Or if it's a kind of hype! Go outdoors and take photos! Relax guys! OM-1.2 is being released less than 2 years after the first version, which is still excellent! The Olympus name can no longer be used and the new version has more RAM, which allows improvements in several aspects. FW Huge updates are not profitable, of course OMDS needs to be profitable in order to grow! I think they're doing a good job! The new lens is excellent and a great alternative to long lenses! People spend so much time complaining that they don't have time to have fun!

    A lot of discussion around the lens being a rebranded Sigma 150-600 at a ridiculous premium price with the weight to go with it.
    I won't be buying either when other systems have combos for 2/3 of the price of this pair. Really feels like OM systems are taking the piss to justify the costs of their name change. I'm being sarcastic of course but it seems to be the theme.

    If they release a firmware update for the OM-1 with all of the features that are possible on the old hardware, which is most of them, for somewhere between $0 and $200 I’ll be happy.
    If they pretend these features aren’t possible on an OM-1… I’ll be quite motivated to switch systems.

      I guess you as an engineer know what you talk about, and me as systems engineer don't understand computer physics.
      I for one, hope the coming firmware update will give me a quarter of the functions, and not to much slower than in the mark 2 with double RAM and reworked IBIS. I know that updating the IBIS with 10% needs physics change, if they just didn't program the IBIS wrongly in the OM1.
      Hopefully, we see a great sales for the updated camera and a new firmware for our older version in about two months. That's what that sales needs as minimum time difference to not go bankrupt after all the whining on the internet.

    Hello, Jose from Puerto Rico. I have the previous model, and to be honest, this is a disappointment. If they were going to upgrade this camera, they should've improved the sensor or move to a bigger sensor like Full Frame. I'm not saying Micro 4/3 is bad, but they apply a cripple hammer to their product. If you swap for another micro 4/3 lens like the Panasonic, it's not able to use the full capacity of those lenses and vice versa. Also, for what I've seen in other reviews, the focusing isn't much of an improvement. I feel they've disrespected the users of their system. I'm still learning mine, and now they come out with this. Furthermore, I'm not a professional photographer, but I do appreciate well-made products and this is something that could've been included as a firmware update to their current customers who, like me, own the previous camera. As I heard in other forums, they will discontinue making the previous model as soon as inventory is cleared. This move also makes me wonder if servicing the previous model will be an issue. It's a shame, since Olympus has had such a great heritage for so many decades. Down the line, I'll probably switch to another system.

    Spending 1,000$ more for OM-1 mark II, makes no sense if your budget is about OM-1 + 300 mm F4 Pro. These upgrades are no worthy.
    Like, literally people should not think about new version in this price if they already have OM-1 or changes systems and would think about pay for that.

    Small, very incremental updates aimed at a very specific niche. Competitors are moving further away from the OMD. FF lens adapted to the platform instead of one that would take benefit of the small sensor. If anyone hoped for more than really slow death of this format, he is getting his answer.

    Great gear but WAITING SINCE 2 YEARS for a substantial firmware upgrade, especially for AF.
    Until now ow: Nothing but an "invitation" to a buy new body.
    Will they update the OM-1 firmware now? Probably not as they would loose a significant argument to sell the mk2, right?
