Hi. My name is Orlando Mergal. I'm from the island of Puerto Rico. My wife and I visited Spain several years ago and we loved it. I've been watching your videos for a while now and it's obvious that you really love what you do. It also occurred to me that this one video in particular must have been filmed over several days, since no one can eat so much in one go. Covid has put a stop to travel for the time being, but thankfully we can explore Spain through your eyes. Thank you for all you do. You're great!!!
Hey James! Your recommendations made my trip to spain sensational! amazing food atmosphere and people in every spot you recommended!!! Thank you so much!!!
Hi James, Thank you so much for your recommendations both in Barca, and I’m here in Madrid right now, and I’ve literally tried almost every place so on your list in last 24hrs or so. The bull tail stew was soooo delicious!! Your stops made my trip, thank you so much for doing what you do and please keep posting more. I’m heading to Italy tomorrow, wish I could stay in Spain some more.
Just a quick tip, when saluting on the "Torno", you've to use "Ave María Purísima" and the sister will answer "Sin Pecado Concebida". Also it can be on the other way round but that's always how you should salute them. Awesome videos btw!!!
This is my first view. I've watched countless other videos on Spain, it's various areas, Madrid. I've spent extended time their with a couple months in Barcelona. Never has anyone shown me this inside view, this intimate knowledge of places, these non cliché venues. No documentaries, no travelogs, no mags, no youtubers, no Spanish teacher,, nobody. Sir, this was Great ! Thank you !
I'm privelidged to live in this wonderful country, James and his wife do an excellent job of getting to the real Spain which is as beautiful as it is diverse. If you plan on coming over, watching their videos will definately help you enjoy the sites, sounds food and drink behind the tourist traps... Great work you two.....
Nuestra cultura es esta: socializar en bares y parques, hablar con la gente, contactar más y más con las personas, como amigos familiares tios, primos y demás gente.
I love Madrid and have been there a lot of times, including the last two New Year's. My favourite bar isn't on this list, la Fragua de Vulcano, named after an oil painting by Diego de Velázquezbut it is well worth a visit for the lovely, friendly atmosphere. When you see locals buying carry-out paella you know it's worth a try! My other love is a Vermut in Casa Alberto, another wonderful, old bar and a walk up to Chueca for another Vermut and pickle in Bodega Angel Sierra.
@@spainrevealed You should James, and with the original painting by Velázquez about 15 minutes away in the Prado, as well as featuring on their menu and painted on the walls outside, there is plenty to talk about. The food might not be able to meet the criterea of a typical Top Ten bar, but considering you can see Plaza Santa Ana from here, it is not an over-priced tourist trap and the free tapas are hearty and large - a small plate of pollo is not unusual. The menu features much, much more. This is a local, a friendly place where the lack of English spoken by the bar staff and my limited Spanish do not matter, if you are in the bar you are a friend. It just happens to be right in the centre of Madrid and in the centre of most of my evenings out in the city. See you there in early November if all goes to plan!
James, I moved to Madrid two months ago and I still haven't found great authentic food here like this. I am SO excited to try everything out, thank you so much for creating this video! This is exactly what I was looking for.
Hi JAMES! I saw the video today with you and Mark Waines and you gave him a tour of restaurants in Madrid… it was one of the best food videos/TV shows I’ve ever seen; I live in the United States and my parents grandparents and great grandparents are from Italy; I’m looking forward in the future Traveling to Spain and I was hoping that you can give me a tour of the restaurants like you did with Mark Wiens; your channel is fantastic and I subscribed I just can’t believe how beautiful Spain is….I always knew it was nice but I didn’t know it was spectacular… Looking forward to watching more of your videos keep in touch I consider you a friend and I will let you know in the future when I will be coming to Madrid Spain hopefully I can meet a beautiful woman there… Respectfully Submitted, Jimmy USAF🇺🇸✈️😇✝️👍💜🇨🇮
hello, I'm coming in October 2022 to Madrid, I've written down all the places you mention on your video. Thank you and Yolli for such a delectable video. I hope to catch you in one of these outstanding places when I visit. Thanks for the heads up. I've already tried La Mayorquina pastries, once before when I visited back in 2018. Can't wait. It's been such a long time. I'm counting the days already.
Waaah. I always come to these "guy from X country tries Spanish food" with my most judgy attitude and I must say there is nothing wrong I can say. Even about the Mercado San Miguel, that can be a tourist trap, you mention what can be nice to do there and explain the history of it. Perfect video. As a Spaniard based in Madrid, I feel like this is more accurate than any video Ive seen on this matter. Also, you convey how much you enjoy the food perfectly. I'm gonna binge watch more of your videos right away!
Came across this video on an Iberia flight to Madrid and decided to try as many of your recommendations as possible. Best experience ever. Every one a winner!! So glad to have found you.
Lo que faltaba...enseñar Casa Revuelta con lo difícil que es ya hacerse hueco!!! Ja, ja, ja. Por cierto los miércoles hacen callos y son de lo mejorcito de Madrid.
I love the show !..My husband And I go to Madrid every year to study flamenco guitar ( husband) and flamenco dance ( me) and then we head up to Sanlucar de Baramedas To study with a different workshop! We loved watching your videos and seeing all the places we’ve already gone to and seeing some new places we haven’t gone to eat! We would love to see you do more shows on every single region of Spain and show a clip of the different regional and flamenco dancers as part of each of the shows!? Keep up the wonderful work!🌸 You are both so sweet!!!
James you've outdone yourself yet again. Super interesting on the tortilla texture! When I first started making them, they would come out exactly like that, but I wasn't so happy with the runny interior. So I started stirring the egg, potato and onion mixture when it first hit the pan, for about 20 - 30 secs or so, and as a result it comes out more cooked through, like the ones you can see in the background at Anciano Rey. Never had the mollejas - def need to try next time I'm in Madrid! Thanks for the video!!!!
Thanks for your comment! It’s up to personal preference how you like your tortilla consistency. One trick to help get it like this is to leave the egg and potato mixture soaking for a while before cooking.
Coming to Spain in two weeks and travelling through Barcelona, Cordoba, Seville, Toledo and ending in Madrid. I have been so happy as a Kiwi to watch your videos and can now start planning a tour of your favourite eateries! Thanks for your service!

Hi James, I’m happy I discovered ur channel. I am planning my first solo trip to Spain in November. I lived there while studying abroad ten years ago and had the time of my life. Married with kids now, and as much as I’ll miss them, I’m planning just a week to have some “me” time. Ur vids have made me that much more excited. Muchas gracias amigo
I went to Spain last year and used your list. I was not disappointed with the food it was amazing. Thank you for your videos makes me excited to go back. Now just to learn more Spanish. I got through with limited Spanish and a lot of pantomime.
About day dinking, you are right. It is a cultural thing and well accepted socially. I am a spaniard and have worked abroad and I have noticed that drinking a beer or a cup of red wine with your lunch is not very common in other countries and can be seen as something inapropiate. In spain however is kind of common to have a little alcohol in daytime just accompanying your food and not ment to get you drunk. In fact. I think most spaniards are quite moderate in their alcohol consumption in comparision with other european countries, for instace England where people get often really drunk, violent and out of control.
U r making me hungry! My husband & I r visiting for our ‘50th’ wedding anniversary next year! U r so knowledgeable & its been a pleasure watching! He was in Spain a little over 50 years ago! Tk u so much! We can’t wait!

James and Yoli, thank you for all your videos of Spain. You have taught me so much and inspired me to visit Madrid. Pllese keep making vidioes. Love Glen in England.
So I went to madrid a month ago and went to a bunch of places off this list. The tortilla place is amazing, as is san Miguel, but hands down the best spot was Casa Tony's. The food here was amazing and I learned some Spanish phrases talking to the bartenders. All of their dishes are great, in particular their chorizo is something to behold. I definitely vouch for the places on this list.
I lived in Spain myself for 30 years. Loved every minute. My wife and kids are dual citizens. I back stateside but will go back to retire in a few years. These guys are absolutely great and spot on. Love to meet you one day. Un cordial saludo JoeS
"It's never too early to drink alcohol in Spain" -> I always say that If the priest drinks in the morning, it's also good enough for me! :P By the way, great recommendations! I was born and raised in Madrid and didn't know some of these great places!

I am returning to my Madrid in 5 days after living in the UK and James, I have fallen in love with my culture all over again watching this!!! I have friends from abroad visiting in January and I will be taking them to these places. Thanks for all the new bars I can discover now! Thanks so much. I've been waiting for this a long time ago. I will be in Madrid next time. Thanks for introducing us to these jewels. These are the genuine places I love.
I’m enjoying this video again and realised that I have never thanked you for encouraging me to try the sweetbreads at Casa Toni. I would never normally eat anything Offaly but I really trust you and gave it a go. My husband & I were converted ! We had extra salsa with them and we dream of them now . What a joy to try something new and love it so much - we love the food in Madrid & a lot of what we’ve experienced is down to your enthusiasm . Thank you .
James, I used to live in Madrid and Casa Revuelta was my hidden secret place/bar. I took so many co-workers and people from other countries to visit that amazing place. I remember the owner, who was always there. We had a PENA from the Atletic of Madrid that we always met there before the games. Watching this video took me to the past. The best bacalao frito in the whole world. I remember Sandi, he might remember me, el guiri de la embajada y de la OTAN (NATO). Great RUclips channel.
So, we are the the start of our EPIC trip to Madrid. We landed from Chicago yesterday morning at 7:30 AM. At 9:30 PM we both dropped into bed exhausted, each with 30K steps on our fit bits and bellies bursting. From James' EPIC Madrid Food Tour we hit: 1. El Riojano for chocolate and soletia 2 San Miguel Market (incredible place) for some vermouth on draft, I took the "normal", as there are actualy multiple flavors 3. Casa Revuelta for some bacalao. They also had pork rinds, which I (cuban descent) know as chicharrone and I wanna say the waiter called torresmo? As good as the bacalao. Looking forward to the next 2 weeks for more food and drink as well as hitting the amazing museums within walking distance all over the city. GREAT ADVICE SO FAR JAMES!
December 16th, 2018 Breakfast at Cafe Pans. We are still waking up early and there isn't much open. This is a chain but it's pretty good and there is NO WAY I am going to set foot in a Starbucks while I am in Madrid. Lunch at Docamar with our friends Javier and Ilka, wonderful spanish tapas bar with AMAZING paella. Seven stops from the Callao metro 5 station, getting down at Quintana. Ordered paella mixto and paella negra. Here is where things take an unexpected turn. I left my backpack (laptop and all) at Docamar and it was several hours before I realized. We were already walking up the stairs to our hostel when I stopped cold. We quickly grabbed a cab and I called, AND THEY TOLD ME THEY HAD MY BACKPACK AND HAD STORED IT FOR ME. Unbelievable and admirable honesty. A disaster averted and even MORE respect for this city. Dinner at Cardamomo Tablao Flamenco. Unbelievable show, very good tapas, and a bottle of good Riojo (14.50). Excellent way to end the day.
Hope you are enjoying your trip to Madrid. Probably the waiter called them "torreznos". However, in Andalucia (south of Spain) they are also called "chicharrones".
We visited Madrid last January & noted all your recommendations, we had the best few days all thanks to you! We now follow you and Yolanda and can't wait to return to Madrid.

Hi James......I will be visiting Madrid in the 2nd week of June. Can you recommend a place where I can get Sardines with lots of Garlic? To sit down and eat. Thanks!!
I was skeptical about mollejas because of the texture but I’m glad you talked me into trying it. Easily my fav meal so far. We did the anchovies too and wow. Going back again before we go back home.

To our delight, we found Tim Horton's coffee at the Alicante airport. It was like Canada followed us to Spain. Thank you for all your reviews of the amazing food in this wonderful Country!
Thank you Oda! Both cities are extremely safe. But if you want to stay in areas that are always busy with people, then anywhere in the historic centre of Madrid, and perhaps El Born neighbourhood in Barcelona. Have a great trip!
James, great videos! My wife and I are big fans. I’m supposed to be in Madrid now as I type this but unfortunately we’re stuck here in quarantine in beautiful Pennington New Jersey! Love that we share some same habits. I also insist on having a glass or two of wine while cooking. I definitely will book a trip with devour during my next stop in Spain. Peace and hi to your lovely wife!
What a shame so many Spaniards are leaving Spain because the situation is not good to live. It's a beautiful country and so diverse. I hope the situation gets better so they don't have to leave.
Have been living in rural Spain for 12 years but still found a couple of things I hadn't tried...plus you explained a couple of things I didn't know the story behind... fantastic... really interesting...need to go back to Madrid to find out some of these places

Thank you so much for your recommendations both in Barca, and I’m here in Madrid right now, and I’ve literally tried almost every place so on your list in last 24hrs or so. The bull tail stew was soooo delicious!! Your stops made my trip, thank you so much for doing what you do and please keep posting more. I’m heading to Italy tomorrow, wish I could stay in Spain some more.
Thank you!! So pleased!
Just a quick tip, when saluting on the "Torno", you've to use "Ave María Purísima" and the sister will answer "Sin Pecado Concebida". Also it can be on the other way round but that's always how you should salute them. Awesome videos btw!!!
That is the greeting to the priest when going to confession.
Fernando Casado is right. I' m spanish. As he told this is the correct way to approach to this places.
Jeje muchas gracias Carmen!
I'll have to check out La Fragua de Vulcano - thanks David!
Perfect! I'm so glad you like the vids. So much amazing food in this city if you know where to look :)
should be easy to find good food in madrid....especially if youve been there 2 months
Well I found great food but it was more international cuisine than actual good quality spanish food!
Well of course Spanish jamón is better than prosciutto!!
Of course!
Aitor Navarro shh.. don’t start a war 🤪
Hi JAMES!
I saw the video today with you and Mark Waines and you gave him a tour of restaurants in Madrid… it was one of the best food videos/TV shows I’ve ever seen; I live in the United States and my parents grandparents and great grandparents are from Italy; I’m looking forward in the future Traveling to Spain and I was hoping that you can give me a tour of the restaurants like you did with Mark Wiens; your channel is fantastic and I subscribed I just can’t believe how beautiful Spain is….I always knew it was nice but I didn’t know it was spectacular… Looking forward to watching more of your videos keep in touch I consider you a friend and I will let you know in the future when I will be coming to Madrid Spain hopefully I can meet a beautiful woman there…
Respectfully Submitted,
Jimmy USAF🇺🇸✈️😇✝️👍💜🇨🇮
hello, I'm coming in October 2022 to Madrid, I've written down all the places you mention on your video. Thank you and Yolli for such a delectable video. I hope to catch you in one of these outstanding places when I visit. Thanks for the heads up. I've already tried La Mayorquina pastries, once before when I visited back in 2018. Can't wait. It's been such a long time. I'm counting the days already.
This is a great channel! On this episode alone was already such an adventure.
Thank you!
I have been to El Riojano twice on my trip and it’s been amazing!!! Found the cloister nun cookies too!
So glad you enjoyed it Stephanie! Thanks for your comment!
Gracias Pablo!
Im going to madrid this month and im totally watching all your videos! Iam SO EXCITED! Thank you from braziil!
Magnífico el video,te agradezco que hables maravillas de mi país.!!
Gracias!
Came across this video on an Iberia flight to Madrid and decided to try as many of your recommendations as possible. Best experience ever. Every one a winner!! So glad to have found you.
Thanks Colin!!!
Lo que faltaba...enseñar Casa Revuelta con lo difícil que es ya hacerse hueco!!! Ja, ja, ja. Por cierto los miércoles hacen callos y son de lo mejorcito de Madrid.
I love the show !..My husband And I go to Madrid every year to study flamenco guitar ( husband) and flamenco dance ( me) and then we head up to Sanlucar de Baramedas
To study with a different workshop! We loved watching your videos and seeing all the places we’ve already gone to and seeing some new places we haven’t gone to eat! We would love to see you do more shows on every single region of Spain and show a clip of the different regional and flamenco dancers as part of each of the shows!? Keep up the wonderful work!🌸
You are both so sweet!!!
Very useful tips. I'll be going to Madrid soon and would like to go to these places you've recommended. Many thanks
I love your videos. I watch them more than once, days or weeks apart. I learn something every time.
I'm going to Spain next year for a study abroad program next year and i will definitely visit these places when i go.
Awesome!!! Enjoy!
you need to tray the bocadillo de calamares is deliciuos
Hey James, my wife and I did your tour today FANTASTIC. Muchas Gracias, we really enjoyed it. I wish I had two stomachs LOL. definitely a highlight of our trip to Madrid!!!!
So pleased! Thanks Russ!
Just discovered your channel, it’s really amazing , it’s like one of those travel shows in the travel channel . I suddenly feel like I am going to come back because apparently I missed a lot. Cheers!!! Oh sorry, you are actually being shown on BBC.
Thank you Charles - I really appreciate that!
Thank you Chris! How exciting you’re going to be hitting Spain for the first time in 10 years. I hope you have an amazing trip!!!
Why 20.000 subscribers many are missing this great blog. Thanks for sharing.
I went to Spain last year and used your list. I was not disappointed with the food it was amazing. Thank you for your videos makes me excited to go back. Now just to learn more Spanish. I got through with limited Spanish and a lot of pantomime.
Great! Now I'm hungry. I also have an urge to start planning my next trip to Spain.
How do you stay so slim eating all that great food. All the food looked amazing.
Daily yoga! ;)
U r making me hungry! My husband & I r visiting for our ‘50th’ wedding anniversary next year! U r so knowledgeable & its been a pleasure watching! He was in Spain a little over 50 years ago! Tk u so much! We can’t wait!
Going to Madrid for a week in Christmas! Can't wait to try all these places! 😁 I hope not speaking Spanish will not be a hindrance!
No you’ll be fine! Also check out our video about ordering in a Spanish restaurant!
Me encanta cómo te paseas por Madrid y nos enseñas tantos manjares, q cada vez q te veo comer con esas ganas me entra hambre a mi también.Hay un dicho que dice"De Madrid al Cielo"y no es para menos con todas las maravillas que tiene
James and Yoli, thank you for all your videos of Spain. You have taught me so much and inspired me to visit Madrid. Pllese keep making vidioes. Love Glen in England.
Gracias por tus vídeos, reflejas a la perfección nuestra cultura y nuestra gastronomía.
No se puede hacer con más cariño y respeto.
Felicidades.
So glad you enjoyed it!!! Thanks for letting me know.
By the way, great recommendations! I was born and raised in Madrid and didn't know some of these great places!
Thanks Sergio.... and that sounds like wise advise to me!
Wondering how these people get to know these places Never can't find anything good or special when I visit Madrid or Barcelona.
I was in Madrid last week and tried all of them except Cerveriz because it was closed. Thanks a lot!.
That’s a shame! Might have been bad timing
I am returning to my Madrid in 5 days after living in the UK and James, I have fallen in love with my culture all over again watching this!!! I have friends from abroad visiting in January and I will be taking them to these places. Thanks for all the new bars I can discover now! You've got a new subscriber 👏 PD: tu español es maravilloso!!!!
Thank you very much! Have a great time re-discovering your country!
.....I'm a Liverpool fan and still reeling from the defeat by Real! But I have to watch:-)
jeje
¡AUPA ATLETI! Saludos de el Sueco
Thanks so much. I've been waiting for this a long time ago. I will be in Madrid next time. Thanks for introducing us to these jewels. These are the genuine places I love.
God, this makes me want to go back to Spain!!
You're always welcome Scot!
Thank you .
You speak/have the accent like an actual Spaniard! 🔥
James,
I used to live in Madrid and Casa Revuelta was my hidden secret place/bar.
I'll ask him!
I am in the shop now, love their chocolate and biscuits - great recommendation.
Enjoy!!!
Ese acento madrileño es increíble, que envidia ojalá hablar inglés como tú español. No conocía esos sitios, me los apuntos.
So, we are the the start of our EPIC trip to Madrid. We landed from Chicago yesterday morning at 7:30 AM. At 9:30 PM we both dropped into bed exhausted, each with 30K steps on our fit bits and bellies bursting. From James' EPIC Madrid Food Tour we hit:
1. El Riojano for chocolate and soletia
2 San Miguel Market (incredible place) for some vermouth on draft, I took the "normal", as there are actualy multiple flavors
Glad it's going well so far Jose... enjoy the rest of your stay in Madrid! Let us know how you get on :)
December 16th, 2018
Breakfast at Cafe Pans.
Muchas gracias James! Can't wait to go there!
Gracias a ti!
Love your videos in Spain. I visited Spain in 2016 and I loved this country. I'd love to visit it again with my lovely wife and kids and might need the Devour Tours to show us around. So we're hungry for more of your Spain's Videos..
Thank you Saad! I appreciate your comment. Would love to have you and your family on a tour and, if not, see you in one of these places!
Your Spanish is awesome!
You made me home sick. I know most of those places. My brother is back in Madrid. I will be going there in January. Spain is wonderful to live. Yes, we like " una buena caña". Gracias!
James, your video is outstanding! we are visiting Madrid soon and have planned around your many recommendations. Have one question though, any great steak restaurants we can check out?? Thanks! Jacklyn, San Diego, California
Try Askuabrra!
So we went to Casa Toni more than a year ago due to this video and in rewatching I just realized we never left a comment. The mollejas were to die for. Thank you so much!
Mouthwatering food. Those secret agent nunnery cookies lol... Would never have known. Also love those behind the scenes shots! Thanks for a great video.
Thanks mate! Yeah, those nuns know how to bake!
To our delight, we found Tim Horton's coffee at the Alicante airport. It was like Canada followed us to Spain. Thank you for all your reviews of the amazing food in this wonderful Country!
I could watch your videos all day :)
I'm planning to go to Barcelona and Madrid in December. Wondering what areas are safest to stay.
The economy is a little better than it was. But still the situation is not great for lots of people.
Where are they going to?
Have been living in rural Spain for 12 years but still found a couple of things I hadn't tried...plus you explained a couple of things I didn't know the story behind... fantastic... really interesting...need to go back to Madrid to find out some of these places
Great, now I’m starving!!! Thanks God I live in Madrid!! 🙋🏻♀️🙋🏻♀️🔝🔝🥳🥳
jeje buen provecho!!!!
This is the best food video rec I’ve seen. I’m excited to try everything, especially the Vermouth at Mercado San Miguel. My trip is next week!!
Thanks for the video. I’m going to Madrid in two days and I’m so excited,
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed. Have a great time!
James, we love all of your videos! My wife and I are moving to Madrid this summer and look at your work as an inspiration to enjoy all of the offerings of Madrid and the rest of Spain has to offer. We hope to follow in your footsteps and sample all of the many tapas spots and restaurants you have featured in your videos. Viva Espana!
